4:30 "Don't think that I should be institutionalized" Alright, you set it: Next Metallica target is 'Sanitarium (Welcome Home)'. EDIT: The bit about your mind not moving as fast as the track... this is something we've discovered and why so many will refer back to the Seattle 1989 concert for reactions/reviews. Why? Because as complex and fast as it is, it's still 4 guys, and seeing them do it while you hear it starts to cement what's going on much faster than listening to the studio cut 10 times. And trust me, you'll play their songs many, many times before you actually catch every little detail.
Live versions of Battery are so powerful because the song was written about the Metallica Family, their fans. Seeing that exchange of energy back and forth from the crowd and the band makes it much more impactful, and being there is like nothing else
Imagine what it was like back in the 80's.. when this 1st came out.. this was the 1st song on the album.. followed by the title track. Two powerhouse songs back to back as album openers. Ponder the reaction considering many people had never heard anything like this before. Peace
Dude I can't imagine the reaction!] Just utter shock! Lol my buddy from work said he went to see ozzy in Omaha in 86. And he said metallica opened on the master of puppets tour. He said they blew ozzy away! METALLICA FOREVER
I first heard this album in 1996 at age 11. While I had already heard the Black album and the Load album, which had just came out, I didn't hear this album until a little while later. I bought the tape because I hadn't heard any songs from it and the album cover looked cool. As soon as Battery kicked in after the acoustic intro, I had never heard anything with that much power and energy in my life EVER. It was SO heavy it felt "evil" to me as an impressionable young kid. But of course after a few listens of the whole album, I was converted into a thrash metal fan for life. It was a revolutionary new style to my young uneducated ears. It was the gateway to thrash metal for me, and it paved the way for me getting in the other extreme styles of metal later on. But I still think that noone really surpassed what Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth did in the 80's. All of the big thrash albums of 86' were simply phenomenal. They have never been out-done by any band since those days. I mean I've heard and seen death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Obituary and Deicide perform live before, but there was just something unique about the raw savagery of early thrash metal that no one in the more "brutal" metal genres can replicate.
The intros are designed to kick songs off on the right foot... Ever pay attention not just to what Battery's intro makes you think of, but what kind of edge the chords and progressions bring with them? It's a relaxed, almost stoic feeling of being at home but the underlying feeling is of apprehension like there's something brutal coming up the street... Battery Street... and Metallica's on the march with the metal militia.
I'd just like to point out that this is the first song on the album and it goes straight into Master of Puppets without pause. Absolutely insane album.
HOLY FK! Billy I laughed so hard bro @3:55!! "makes me wanna ride a scateboard on a subway track with a subway coming right at me!" ROFLMAO!!! oooboy i cannot stop laughing. It's 3AM here my whole house WAS sleeping but I nearly game though this screen to give you a bro hug! That was the best damn reaction comment I have ever heard!!! FK YAH!!! You are something else man. So genuine. Seriously though I wish we were neighbors I'd love to kick it with you man!
Head bang to every other beat, save your neck. Might as well do the rest of Master of Puppets. I would recommend Lepper Messiah or Welcome Home (Sanitarium) next. Or Orion if you haven't done that yet.
Master of Puppets is part of the first Metallica era that was the 80s. First 4 albums were more thrash metal and really started a genre. They started the 90s with the black album that was a lot more mainstream but is still their best selling album to date with something like 15 million +. They've been experimenting back and forth since then between metal and mainstream tracks.
actually james said that battery is a litle double meaning... battery for the agression, the anger they had at thoose days and it happened he live with Lars at Battery St. at the Bay area, where lots of thrash bands were actually living there and... well... battery... so.. that´s it
Your analysis of the lyrics in all their songs is always spot on . What makes them great is the combination of their meaningful lyrics and superior musical intelligence . Love your reactions !
Love seeing reactions to Metallica. Imagine 34 yrs ago as I bought this album anxious to hear MOP, and this gem hits me. To this day, still get chills.
90% of true metal fans will tell you this is best concert of all time by ANY BAND! Metallica live in Seattle 1989. Any song from this is crunchy. Gotta do the whole concert just for you.
"I ain't got nothin left" hahahaaa! That's how I felt after their concert. Love your reactions! I've been a fan since I was 13, and it makes me very happy to watch others enjoy this stuff so much. You may have a heart attack if you attend a concert of theirs, though - I very nearly did!
The best thing about BATTERY is that it opens the album! What a fucking opener!!! Ha! Goddddamn genius Lar’s and James and Cliff! Unreal! NONE OF THE BIG4/5 thrash bands have a song this good much less a record this good! That’s why METALLICA is number 1 baby! #1
I'm a new subscriber here and your reactions are priceless! You're listening to HOF level Metallica music and yes, metal can put your mind and soul into a frenzy! Skateboarding and trying to buffalo a train is METAL AF!
Metallica is my favorite band of all time and my personal favorite song is Bleeding Me. It’s far more mellow that anything from Master of Puppets but the tone and lyrics get me.
LOL, you should listen to the song "Incoming" by Sydonia. There's even a line that says, "My neck hurts! My neck hurts!" Although that's followed up with lines that say things like, "Just because my head's at the bottom of a basket," and "Just because my home is a holy land."
There is a lot of power that this kind of music can give you! The gym is one place that it can push you to your limits as well as in other ways! Think of Metallica as one of your favorite supplements that you can always count on! It has definitely done that for me throughout the years! By the way, I dont know if anyone has said it but if there is any way you could make the music you are reacting to and the volume of your voice the same that would be awesome! You have a great channel and thank you for putting your name on the dotted line for America! God bless
Fun fact. This song is titled "Battery" like the action or crime of battering someone(Aggravated Assault and Battery) to death with a blunt object. It is NOT like the energizer battery. That slips by a lot of people.
This was their last album with their original bassist; Cliff Burton. He was a major influence in the progressive nature of this album. He died in a bus accident while on tour. Metallica hasn’t been the same since.
Lol, had to pause the video to get rid of the ad. It in no way affected the song at all and you still had to pause the song and close the ad. I feel that.
Hot for Teacher by Van Halen!! You need to watch the official video for it ( ruclips.net/video/6M4_Ommfvv0/видео.html ) Not the live version and not a lyric video! The music video makes the song in this case.
"The theme of the song revolves around the San Francisco thrash scene of the 1980s. The most prominent club played by Metallica was the Old Waldorf located at 444 Battery Street in downtown San Francsico. The tone of the song is one of familial ties and the positive release of energy through the common interest of metal. The lyric "Cannot kill the family, Battery is found in me" is a statement that while society at large doesn't understand the scene, those within it (i.e. "the family") will fiercely defend it as a show of solidarity against the glam scene that was popular in the Los Angeles area." - metallica.fandom.com/wiki/Battery_(song)
Pleeeease do Damage Inc by Metallica, CRIMINALLY underrated song from Master Of Puppets
He already did lol
his head's gonna go flying off hahaha
Good LORD what a ripping track.
I don't think there is any song on Master that is underrated. But if there is one I would say Leppard Messiah.
"The thing that should not be" live version will melt his face off.
4:30 "Don't think that I should be institutionalized"
Alright, you set it: Next Metallica target is 'Sanitarium (Welcome Home)'.

slayer?
Good metal does that to you. It takes you on a journey. It makes you feel emotion. You work your aggression out in a healthy way.

Metallica - "Dyers Eve".
Live from Moscow............1.6 million people.........

This song is pure adrenaline and aggression. First time I heard it I was an infantryman serving overseas. Have you taken the Damage, Inc. ride yet?
Battery is the street in San Fran where the band moved to. That street was fans of thrash.
there is also a military battery that is a unit of heavy fire arms witch i believe this this song is about.
@Matthew Heck coolest thing is it applies to all 3 topics mentioned
Correct! It is about the Thrash culture in that area at the time.
"Battery" also means "to kick the shit out of something", which this song also does!
I didn’t say their fans, fans of thrash ie diamond head etc
Fight fire with fire
This man gets it
Nobody ever reacts that one! It's always Master, One, Fade, and anything off the Black Album.
Head bang to every other beat, save your neck. Might as well do the rest of Master of Puppets. I would recommend Lepper Messiah or Welcome Home (Sanitarium) next. Or Orion if you haven't done that yet.
Orion instrumental, emotional rollercoaster, best song ever! RIP Cliff Burton.
🤣🤣🤣
🤘🤘🤘
@Shallex Nah, the trick is (beat)down (beat)up.
I as also gonna say alternate between on beat and alternating beat headbang ;)
The obvious next choice should be Whiplash.
You can’t stop Head Banging!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 Let the thrash metal consume you!!!!

It's closer to 25-million.
That face when you hear a good solo.......same face when you hear a bar!

3:10 is when the Reckless Giddyup starts 🤣
What a way to open an album!
Love seeing reactions to Metallica. Imagine 34 yrs ago as I bought this album anxious to hear MOP, and this gem hits me. To this day, still get chills.
Battery was the name of a thrash club they used to play at in the early days so they wrote a song about it.
You have a creative mind. Nothing 'crazy' about it but people will judge you for your 'visions' (because they're not having them).
But I am gonna judge you for your Golden Girls poster! :D
90% of true metal fans will tell you this is best concert of all time by ANY BAND! Metallica live in
Seattle 1989. Any song from this is crunchy. Gotta do the whole concert just for you.
My favorite Metallica song. It'll get ya moving. In Somalia we would crank Metallica, scared the hell out of the skinnys.
That feeling? That's metal. Skateboarding into an oncoming train? Metal.
"I was under a trance but my neck hurts"
welcome to the family.
Might as well just react to the whole Master of Puppets album. That whole album is straight thrash metal at it's finest
I think black people discovering metal en masse is one of the greatest thing that has happened to the internet.
Perfect album opener
You need to react this one live in Seattle in '89. They find another gear.
You need to do disposable heroes next, but FIRST buy neck insurance
Hypnotizing power - Crushing all that cower - can not stop the BATERYYYYYYYY!!!!!! 10/10.
Yo Billy that's a badass skateboard brother! 😝😄😝
React to Metallica - Creeping death live in Moscow 1991
Excellent choice. Historical show in epic proportions. The Havester of Sorrow with Jasons backups...epic cool
Dude you need to do in justice for all. The whole album. Welcome to the Metallica family
In a Subway... smacking people...
LMAO 😂😂😂
Sounds like the mosh pit to me.
I just love watching new Metallica fans being born 😌🤘🏾
As far as songs that get me feeling pumped up, this is one of the tops of all time.
Yeah! This is a type of song that give you instant adrenaline rush
For me this song is like grabbing a 1 million volt wire and feeling that power go through you.
The Climb of The Intro...Just...Raaaaaggh!!!
This song makes me want to punch a hole into a brick wall! I get so fired up!!!

Check out the live version in Seattle '89 - that is pure insanity.
I'm a new subscriber here and your reactions are priceless! You're listening to HOF level Metallica music and yes, metal can put your mind and soul into a frenzy! Skateboarding and trying to buffalo a train is METAL AF!
This song is about the intensity of the metal fans that hung out on Battery St San Fran and went to the gigs.
When you hear these songs and then you listen to Metallica now, and see what happened to them now, it's really sad.
😥😥😥😥😓😭😭
18 years old in the pit for this in 1989 play at 125% the speed.
Hahaha I got my head busted open to this song in a mosh pit way back in late 80s early 90s . Found out our local venue had an infirmary lol.
Ahhhhh the shit eating grin during the unstoppable thrash had me howling! Brought me back to my first exp with it thanks man
Metallica is my favorite band of all time and my personal favorite song is Bleeding Me. It’s far more mellow that anything from Master of Puppets but the tone and lyrics get me.
Now ya gotta check out Battery Live in Seattle '89
If you hurt your neck and head after headbanging to this song, you're doing it right.
If you wanna see their max playing speed ever, react to Battery live Seattle '89 remastered.. and see the drummer at the end...
You're not a Metalhead until you get whiplash!

The intramental solos in this song is amazing in this song
Just paintbrushing fools up in Subway?? "How's your sandwich? " Then S M A C K "There's your sandwich."

you're reactions are awesome! I enjoy you so much. Keep them coming.
LOL, you should listen to the song "Incoming" by Sydonia. There's even a line that says, "My neck hurts! My neck hurts!" Although that's followed up with lines that say things like, "Just because my head's at the bottom of a basket," and "Just because my home is a holy land."
I love your detailed explanations
Thank you for listening to us bro love this video

Mad respect from a fellow Bills fan.
It's March 2022. Happy birthday 🥳 🪅 🎊
Halo on Fire and Here Comes Revenge
Orion
Billy,
imagine listening to battery going down then steep streets in San Francisco on a scateboard.
Battery is the street in San Francisco where they were getting started at a club, don't remember the name of the place or if it's still there.
Freedoms not Free Freedoms not Free I think it was the Waldorf or something like that
Yep,it's called the Old Waldorf,444 Battery Street,San Francisco. I looked it up. Found some cool old pictures.
Battery Street, San Francisco. It’s where it all started.
This track makes me wanna go relly fast down the highway 🚗🙂
Anyone else dying to see the Energizer Bunny rock out to this song? Oh yeah!
Welcome to headbanging!
Listen to the S&M version of Battery. It adds another dimension to the song.
hero of the day
Never thought I'd see a Master of Puppets album cover next to a Space Jam poster but here we are
This was the first song they played June 13, 1986 on the Master Of Puppets tour. \m/
Fun fact. This song is titled "Battery" like the action or crime of battering someone(Aggravated Assault and Battery) to death with a blunt object. It is NOT like the energizer battery. That slips by a lot of people.
3:55 metal does that to you man especially Metallica, just wait till you hear spit out the bone or all nightmare long
It's battery like assault and battery, not like, AAA batteries.
"My neck hurts."
Well when the Battery is found in you, that's what's gunna happen 🤷♂️
This was their last album with their original bassist; Cliff Burton. He was a major influence in the progressive nature of this album. He died in a bus accident while on tour. Metallica hasn’t been the same since.
LOL welcome to metallica my friend.makes ya want to jump in the octagon and go 15 rounds =D
Im sure its in here somewhere but "the family" is the Manson family
I think what you meant to say was that it makes you want to drive a subway down a new york city side walk.
Not sure if it's been said in the comments already.
Battery was a name of a bar-venue they played at in San Francisco
No one does a dynamic build up better than Metallica
Imo this is a top 5 metallica song
Lol, had to pause the video to get rid of the ad. It in no way affected the song at all and you still had to pause the song and close the ad. I feel that.
Hot for Teacher by Van Halen!! You need to watch the official video for it ( ruclips.net/video/6M4_Ommfvv0/видео.html ) Not the live version and not a lyric video! The music video makes the song in this case.
NO ONE should start or finish with Metallica without FADE TO BLACK. A MUST
This one transitions from 10 to 200!
Battery
Killem all
For whom the Bell tolls
These were my hype songs before a football game
You should listen to Metallica's "Whiplash" speaking of headbanging. lol
That damn song should have a warning label in the liner notes on the album. *MAY CAUSE BROKEN NECK* lol
Most Metallica songs get me crunck-AF Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) you did say "Don't think I should be Institutionalized"
"The theme of the song revolves around the San Francisco thrash scene of the 1980s. The most prominent club played by Metallica was the Old Waldorf located at 444 Battery Street in downtown San Francsico. I love these reactions!
