Thank you dear Belgium, Merci en Bedankt!! Together in the same ESC semi with both powerhouses of acts!! That will be very good and exciting for both of our countries!! Groeten uit Amsterdam
The song name is a contraction of Europe + Papa (= father in Dutch). Further references to these 2 subjects: 1. He was an orphan at a young age. His father taught him that this world is his oyster, without borders. So he travels to many countries to escape the pain of the loss of his parents, but that doesn't work. No escargots, fish 'n chips, paella can make him forget. Reference to Stromae's Papaoutai (dad, where are you). 2. He used to watch ESC with his parents. And he said that one day he would be on that stage performing. His father encouraged him to live life without limits and to go for it. The small boy with the note pad references to his father encouraging him to write poetry (his father was a writer) and now Joost writes songs and he has made it to the ESC ("you see, dad, I listened to you"). With the burning (of the house, picture, building/mill (his past, growing up in Friesland)) at the end of the video, everything comes full circle. He has made his parents proud and he can accept their passing, his past and move on. Hope this helps.
Europapa is a tribute to Joost's father. Through the song, the artist informs the listener that there are no limits if you want to make your dreams come true and tell your story. The tune is a madcap mix of melancholy and happiness, delivered with the poetic lyrics and catchy beats for which Joost has become renowned.
If you really listen to the lyrics, it is clearly an ode to his parents who passed away when he was a child and talking about him running away from his pain without success. Europapa means 'Euro daddy' of course, but also: 'fortunately I don't need a visa to be with you' 'I've lost everything except time' 'I'm in Germany but I'm so alone' (in German) 'I'm in Italy but it still hurts' 'I'm running from myself, crying for help all day long. I even give money to people but there is no one to help me' 'Turn on the radio, hear Stromae with Papaoutai ( which means Daddy, where are you? in French) 'My father once told me: it is a world without borders. I miss you every day is what I secretly whisper. See, dad, I listened to you' So basically: wherever he goes, the sadness goes with him. And then that burning house at the end symbolizes the message to oneself of having to let go of that sadness and old memories in order to move on
No happiness without sadness... in a world without boundaries your mind is free to tavel anywhere you want. LOVE IT!❤ Joost Klein droom groot❤ (the surname 'Klein' means small, so Joost small dream big!)
12 points to The Netherlands. The winner of the Eurovision Songcontest 2024. This is a masterpiece. Euro papa= Euro dad, because papa is dad in Dutch. A sad song with lyrics with a meaning, with a message, in a happy hardcore melody. A letter to his father who died when he was a 12 year old child. His mother past away a year later. He promised his father that he will be someday on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His father told him that it is possible because there are no borders between the countries, and no limits to follow his dream. Borders and limitations are made by human. In every country he went, he felt the pain and grief of no having his parents. The fire symbolise letting go of the grief and pain, and the start of a new chapter in his live.
Growing up in The Netherlands in the '90, HAPPY HARDCORE 4 LIFE!! Best time of my life!! Wish we could go back to those HAPPY sounding vibes!! So cool to see typical happy hardcore sounds and type of filming!! Also papa means dad in Dutch so Euro papa - Euro dad
Normally i go for the more ballad like songs, but i like this! For the Dutch its nostalgic and recognizable, but i get him..i get the song and i love it!! It will be a crowd voting and not so much jury i'm afraid!
A lot of 90’s/00’s (euro)dance vibes in the contest this year. But unlike the other once’s this has so much more to it from the music standpoint and the song also has a real genuine meaning. From me to my parents 😢 Aaaaand it’s the only one with some proper gabberrrrrrr (jonguh)! 😊
That would have been EPIC. hearing him doing something in Frisian as well :D Joost lost his father at age 13 because of cancer and a year later his mom passed away from cardiac arrest. He was raised by his brother and sister who still play a big part in his life.
The song is a tribute to his dad. Joost always wanted to compete in Eurovision and his dad told him that there are no limits (or as shown in this video: no borders). Sadly, both his parents passed away when he was still young and with this song/video he’s saying to father: you were right, I listened to you and now I’ve made it!
What is very Dutch is depth hidden in jokes and switch from fun to serious. It started with Neerlands Hoop who introduced this form in comedy, and Freek de Jonge expanded on it when he went solo. I have to say this is the first time I've seen it in a song like this.
Best entry from the Netherlands ever, this has literally everything, and even if he doesn't win, he made us proud already. Fuck yeaaaaah

Finally we got a song at Eurovision with REAL Dutch music with a REAL Dutch genre, called Happy Hardcore
And really in Dutch (mostly) 😂
Honest opinion? I don't need the finals anymore, this is the absolute winner. Period.
12 points for The Netherlands. 🎉 love the song. Party time.
