      Thanks to Dr John for clarifying motive in the February 2017 Delphi murders of Liberty German 14, and Abby Williams, 13. I'm no psychologist. I'm a British former national newspaper journalist who has reported on and researched many high-profile murders. It was always clear to me the motive was sexual in this case.
      That the two girls were targeted in that way (abduction in a public location, in broad daylight where he could have been interrupted/thwarted/caught), and both victims unclothed by the perpetrator, spoke volumes. This was opportunistic, sexually motivated stranger violence, culminating in murder.
      Sexual motivation is strong motivation, frequently characterised by risk-taking and repeat offending by the perpetrator, with escalation of violence over time.
      My thanks also to Dr John for bringing such clarity to the following question, which often crops up in discussions on his likely guilt or innocence: Richard Allen was around 45 years old at the time of the Delphi murders, an audacious, double homicide of two teen girls, in an outdoor, public location, during daytime. In middle age, he had no criminal record.
      To be clear: I believe Libby's Smartphone video of the suspect termed 'Bridge Guy', and Allen's early admission he was present at the crime scene at the time of the killings, wearing the same clothing, are compelling evidence he is 'Bridge Guy' and therefore the killer. So, assuming Allen is guilty of these two murders, what are the chances this was his first ever offence of sexual violence against females?
      Allen is a husband and the father of a daughter (who incidentally, bears a striking physical resemblance to victim Libby German). For many years up to his arrest, he worked a public-facing role at a branch of CVS Pharmacy. As the chief investigating office Supt Doug Carter had correctly predicted from day one, the killer was always, quote; 'hiding in plain sight'. As a respectable, middle aged husband and father in full time employment, and crucially, with no criminal record, Allen would have been suspected by precisely no one.
      But having no criminal record does not automatically mean a person has no history of criminal behaviour. It just means they've never been arrested and charged with it. Guess which crime is hugely under reported, and therefore under charged and under prosecuted, with most perpetrators getting away with it time and time again? Domestic abuse/violence, in which the offender is known to (and likely in an ongoing relationship with) the victim.
      Critically, Dr John pointed out the 2015 domestic incident, during which a 911 call was made from the Allen home, and police were summoned there. Officers made no arrests and took no action, merely advising Allen's wife to take the severely intoxicated Allen to hospital. We don't know what level of violence he committed during that incident. But it indicates he was abusive to one or more female/s in the house. He has no criminal record because he has never been arrested - it does not mean he has no criminal history, and has never committed a prior crime of violence/abuse against females.
      It is highly unlikely Allen never committed crimes of violence/sexual violence against female children or women, before the Delphi murders. As Dr John stated, the crime was almost certainly a case of abuser-turned-murderer. In my view the Delphi murders represent a significant escalation in his violent offending, they were not the start of it. In all statistical probability, Allen has other victims out there. They may not be strangers to him.

      I feel sorry for you guys that you have to deal with mindnumbing trolls, honest to God it drives me nuts, people these days cannot just see the obvious evidence before them, it has to be something outrageous like the odinists ect, brings to mind the witch hunts and their beliefs of a bygone era, geez. Watching too much Csi or the like, demanding motives which the prosecution does not have to offer ect ect. How can anyone not stand back from this and see it for what it is? What I don't get. His wife had to have viewed that video Dailey on the news. How could she not know

    • @glamdolly30
      @glamdolly30 2 месяца назад +5

      @@BeverlyMurphy-u5l Oh I get it. It's a very common human trait to fail to recognise what's staring you in the face - particularly when you are deeply invested in not recognising the reality of who a person really is.
      There are umpteen historical examples of the partners/close relatives of killers and sex offenders, failing to recognise photos/security videos/sketches/photofits/descriptions of their spouse/loved one, when he has been witnessed/recorded at crime scenes.
      This doesn't only apply to partners/spouses incidentally, but to all close relatives - the killer's parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and even non-relatives, like friends and co-workers.
      Richard Allen is clearly 'Bridge Guy' - he admitted so himself, when he approached the authorities soon after the murders and gave an admission he was at the crime scene at the relevant day and time, and was wearing the same clothes as the guy on the video.
      It was him! When Libby's dynamite Smartphone video of him following her and Abby across the bridge was splashed across the TV news and every RUclips true crime channel, he panicked and decided to get in front of the story by coming forward and playing the role of innocent witness. I bet he couldn't believe his luck when the Keystone Cops failed to follow up and summon him to a formal interview - and then left him alone for a whole FIVE YEARS. Supt Doug carter was wrong when he said the killer was, quote: 'Hiding in plain sight' - he wasn't hiding at all!
      Despite the ongoing publicity (and unless we hear different at his murder trial), it does not appear anyone gave Richard Allen's name to police - and let's not forget he worked a public-facing job at a CVS pharmacy. Apparently it never occurred to customers the friendly, helpful guy behind the counter could possibly be the short, bearded, middle aged man he resembled on his victim's grainy Smartphone footage.
      But many people are shocked that Richard Allen's wife, adult daughter, and all his relatives, failed to recognise him from Libby's video, or indeed from the first suspect sketch (which closely resembled him).
      Don't think it couldn't happen to you. Who would easily suspect a loved-one of such an horrific crime? And who knows what self delusion any of us is capable of, when facing a certain set of personal circumstances? We know from the 911 call to his house in 2015, two years before the Delphi murders, Richard Allen had some history of domestic abuse (likely combined with alcohol abuse).
      We know no more detail than that, but at the very least it indicates the marriage was not entirely happy or stable. Yet to this day Kathy Allen remains a loyal wife who stayed with her husband. A woman trying to keep a shaky marriage going, will not automatically suspect her husband of being the man behind a high-profile, double child homicide. In fact, it's the last thing she would believe - or more to the point, want to believe.

Also his wife's brother, who apparently both Kathy and Richard were both very close to, died.. This brother was taking care of Kathy Allen's mother who was chronically ill. Kathy had to take more responsibility for her mother after her brother died which took her away from home.

    I guess I dont understand how Dr. John says it is the farthest from coercion. Wouldn’t being in solitary confinement add similar psychological pressures similar to being in a room with a detective and told you can’t pee for 60 hours. I thought (and haven’t researched much) but I thought solitary confinement can cause hallucinations and cause or worsen disorders?

    • @baystate_mainely

      Yes. Prolonged solitary confinement can be extremely damaging to a person's mental health and lead to psychotic breaks which is why people shouldn't be held for more than 30 days. Prolonged solitary is used by the military to force confessions and punish. RA was in solitary for 1 year! I don't understand how he says it's the farthest from coercion either.

      @@EUZ890 As Prosecutor Nick McLeland mentioned in his abbreviated opening arguments this week, the indications are that one or both of the girls tried to make a break for it and escape Richard Allen, as he led them to the area where he planned to attack them, 'down the hill'.
      Their attempted escape, resulted in them crossing the shallow brook with him, and the crime scene changing to the area on the far side of the water.
      With respect, I don't think any of us can know for sure what two terrified children would do, faced with an adult male abductor ordering them around at gunpoint.
      Libby and Abby were much-loved girls from loving families, raised in a small, tight knit community. Nothing in their lives could have prepared them for the horrors they faced that day, at the hands of a deviant sexual predator who would even kill them to get his twisted sexual kicks.
      I am astonished anyone would question why two children were overpowered by the highly dangerous man who confronted them that day. Even if he had not been armed with a weapon, it's entirely possible the girls would have been frozen with fear and obeyed his every command, thinking that would be their best course of action to stay alive.
      In fact, as the FBI handbook emphasises, when a would-be abductor tells you to accompany them to 'the second location' it is not in your interests to obey their orders, as that is inevitably the isolated place they plan to do their worst to you, where you cannot escape, raise the alarm or summon help from others (it is worth noting 'the second location' could be the offender's vehicle). Scream, kick, fight and do everything you can to resist winding up at the second location, as the odds are once he gets you there, you will not emerge alive.

      Sadly police inexperience meant they played everything too close to the vest, and in my view that only hampered the investigation and meant the public could not be of much help.
      In addition, under Supt Doug Carter there were multiple, significant missteps in the murder investigation, which meant the killer walked free for an astonishing five years.
      One such police mistake was the release, two years later, of a dramatically different, far younger, clean-shaven sketch of the suspect and a much younger age estimate of 18-40 - both of which turned out to be inaccurate, and only further hindered progress in identifying Richard Allen.
      The similarly dramatic, belated police TV appeal regarding the fake 'Anthony Shotts' online profile, set up by child sex predator Keegan Kline, was another red herring which had nothing whatsoever to do with the Delphi murders. The Keystone Cops were barking up the wrong tree yet again! They finally got on the right track when they decided to go back to ground zero and revisit the first stages of the investigation five years on, in 2022. This finally led them to Richard Allen.
      I believe Allen is their man. He admitted to the authorities early on he was 'Bridge Guy', present on the bridge/at the crime scene at the time of the murders, and wearing the same clothes as the man seen on victim Libby's Smartphone video.
      Libby German gave police the best possible evidence on a silver platter - a video, with audio, of the man who murdered her and Abby. Allen should have been arrested within 2 weeks of these homicides, tops!
      But shoddy police work meant despite coming forward and identifying himself at the start (no doubt scared because Libby's video of him was all over the news), Richard Allen was not even asked to come in for a formal police interview. Not until his admission was spotted, five years later, was he belatedly looked at, and their glaring mistake became only too clear. It's no thanks to the police that Allen, a highly dangerous man, didn't reoffend during the five years he was at large.
      This outrageous delay in catching the killer means evidence against him has inevitably been disposed of and compromised. It has also inevitably weakened public confidence (and potentially a jury's), that police have the right man. It will be fascinating to find out exactly how strong a case prosecutors have built against Allen.

    • @SometimesPerplexed
      @SometimesPerplexed 2 месяца назад +4

      I think that whatever the verdict is, it will never be deemed fully credible because of the official secrecy and cloud of confusion. If Richard Allen at some point confesses in circumstances where his psychiatric status is not in doubt and he gives a detailed and credible account of the sequence of events, that might settle things, but a verdict alone won’t in my opinion. Maybe if the evidence that will be presented forms such a tight web around him that no possibility exists except that he did it, acting alone, then it’s case closed in the public mind, but in that case, why wasn’t he arrested in the weeks after the crime?

      Why does anyone doubt that a highly predatory and dangerous adult man with sexual violence on his mind, could control two underage girls?
      Such a man could potentially control two adult women too. If you suddenly find yourself in that terrifying situation, confronted by a strange man of ill intent, shock takes over, and your instinct is typically to obey and be compliant in hope that's your best chance of survival.
      In fact the opposite is usually true - your safest course of action is to defy and disobey the perpetrator, scream, shout, run and if needs be fight, to get away from him. He is not giving you orders that will help you, after all, they are all for his own benefit, to assault and harm you!
      The orders given by the perpetrator are invariably aimed at getting the victim(s) to a second, isolated location (in the Delphi case, "Down the hill"), where he can do his worst to them away from other people who may offer help and a chance for them to escape.
      The FBI handbook is clear on this point - never let a would-be abductor take you to 'the second location' - and the second location could even be his vehicle. Once he has succeeded in getting you where he wants you, ie a place where you are alone with him and unlikely to be able to summon help, your chances of surviving the encounter plummet.

    Thank you Lauren and Dr John. This was one of the best analysis I've seen Dr John do. I even went back and rewatched several parts of it to absorb what he was saying.

    What Dr. John is saying, makes so much sense, about the SA and DV. Also, I was always wondering what the downhill statement meant, so if the girls saw the gun, as heard in the video. He used the gun to get them to go downhill and they were afraid and went, in greater fear of being shot by running away.

    Hi John - Does the behavior have anything to do with psychosis from solitary confinement as opposed to the "inner turmoil" that you suspect of RA?

      @tedlouie Was thinking along the same lines. The amount of reaching done in this video was a bit much. I appreciate nuance thinking and try to keep an open- mind. Idk if RA is the perpetrator or not but I just felt like his analysis was heavily slanted towards RA being guilty from the beginning and then he forced a lot of topics just to confirm his biases. IMO

    I deeply admire Dr. John's mind! What a great way to link the Delphi case and the Greek tragedy! Amazing! And, yes, we need a lecture, keep doing a great job, guys!

    Hello Lauren and Dr.John;
    This was a fascinating discussion. I really gained a lot of insight into Richard Allen. Thank you for that! I stopped subscribing to other channels because I became overwhelmed; however, I have subscribed to your channel because you often discuss topics I find interesting in a well researched, thorough and respectful way. I look forward to more interesting content from both of you.

      @@MonnaRooney how have you gained an insight into Richard Allen? None of us have spoken to him, seen SM posts from him or even heard him speak.

    I haven’t watched the entire video because it feels like Dr John is saying that RA is guilty when he is innocent until proven guilty. So far the evidence has been very weak. He should never have been forced to be in solitary confinement, in a maximum security prison, when he hadn’t been convicted of a crime.

      With all the furor over this crime it is very possible he could've been killed at the county jail. Or in general population. Inmates don't care for (alleged)child murders.
