Holy crap this video is 8 years old... still helping people today!!!!
This is the big pro about having brown eyes...
You can wear colors and it'll make your eyes stand out
Which is why I'm glad i have pitch black eyes lol
Good point, brown eye shadow is not a complementary opposite however, it works so well with brown eyes cause it makes the white in the eye pop and look super healthy its a definite exception to the rule.
Deep green and blue make deep brown eyes pop.
Yes ! I've got giant brown eyes and a shadow addiction and I wear new colours everyday, never looks jarring (imo)
Yes!
Not for me, I only like to wear soft eye makeup in neutral colours, so what I do It's to just add some definition to the eye, but the colours I use are not going to help my eye colour pop.
Am I partially color blind? Because that doesn't look orange. looks like a tanish sandy color
girllllll I was wondering the same thing😩 double checked with my man and he thought the same thing so it might just be the camera he used washing the color out or something
jill campanella Omg thank you. I thought I was going crazy
@@nessavibes8788 nah you're not crazy. He's showing variations of the saturated colors so people will understand what he's talking about without having to use bright screaming colors of eyeshadow most people wouldn't be adventurous enough to try.
@@kittiewoodheath7150 Ohhh! Thank you for letting me know
The colors all seemed a bit off from what he was describing.
"It's gonna make her look dead, and hurt." 😂😂
Promise Mitchell this is my makeup look daily lol
UndeterminedName I nearly died 😂😂😂
🤣😂😂😂
“Like she got punched in the face” 😆😆 I died
Wow, and I thought all greys were cool and dead looking!!! Thats so cool to know!!!
I like how this has an artistic lean towards it. Often when the conversation of makeup comes up function and how to apply is discussed, but never color theory.
This is the best of all the color theory makeup videos I've seen. And just the fact that you brought makeup into your video, unlike many people that attempt this video, makes it so much easier to see against your eye color swatches! Very well done video, and much appreciated by a fellow makeup artist :)
I'm no make up artist but this was what I was thinking too. I trust him cause he knows and started off explaining about color wheel. 😂
Totally agree!
Well darn it 😂😂 I guess I can wear any color. I was hoping for him to tell me exactly what I need to wear.
Legit same
I envy you brown eyed beauties!
Beauty Tip Tuesday: Eyes
Which shades of eyeshadow and eyeliner will best enhance and intensify your color? I want people to say, "your eyes look beautiful," not "your eyeshadow looks pretty." Makeup is always about enhancing your personal beauty.
The most important thing to think about when choosing eyeshadow and eyeliner is your own eye color. You want to select shades that will bring out the natural color of your eyes. Your goal is to make your eye color POP and stand out, not for your eyeshadow to compete or diminish your natural color.
The key is to select a shade that is the opposite of your eye color. Whenever you pair two opposite colors, they intensify each other (this is a theory discovered and proven by Leonardo da Vinci).
Example: Blue eyes should choose a warm shade of brown or tawny or golden shades. Green eyes should choose coppery, warm browns or purple. Brown eyes? Lucky you! You can use any color and it will not compete with your eye color!

Robert this is probably the most comprehensive & easily understood color wheel description and skin tone lesson I've ever seen. Most descriptions I've watched were either too vague or just overall confusing. This is perfectly understandable and helpful, I thank you.
***** he's given the answers to this. All we have to do is look or use the shades that are opposite on the color wheel of our eye color. So deep blue would use like rusty brown/sunset colors or golds and coppers in order to make blue eyes pop. Go back to his video and pause it so you can really get a good look at complimentary opposites. This is one of the best/easiest descriptions I've seen using color theory on RUclips.
***** by the way, your age has nothing to do with what colors you should or shouldn't use. The colors that complement blue eyes don't change with age 🙂
Age doesn't but format does. Older skin does not do well with glitter/metallic/cream based shadows. They draw attention to fine lines and set into creases. Go with flat, matte colours
I'm just...ecstatic to see...acknowledgement of bronze/ebony skin tones. My heart is full. I'm so here for this video. Most clarified video on color theory thus far. Thank you so much.
Lady Fervor because white people for the longest time have been the mainstream primary sources of exposure in the makeup industry and honestly until recently not a lot of black focused makeup brands were out there. The relief is there for a reason. Don’t just dismiss people’s experiences.
@Lady Fervor I don't understand why you're being so defensive when OP never attacked white people in any way. She just said she was glad someone acknowledged darker skin tones in this video.
Also, the vast majority of the makeup artists and consultants in the world ARE NOT black. The only well-known black makeup artist I can think of off the top of my head is Natasha Denona, who focuses more on creating new products nowadays instead of being a consultant. That's why black women are glad when people acknowledge them, because they tend to get overlooked in a lot of aspects in the beauty world besides just representation.
@Lady Fervor they don't exist in the UK, Spain, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, unsure about Germany - if you can find one do let me know ...
Lady Fervor Fuck you and the two people that liked this ignorant comment.
Joanne the Scammer get tf out of here with your negativity, perpetuating the angry black woman stereotype n attacking an innocent question. Shame on you.
Since when did we start calling beige "orange"?
The colors are very washed out. Purple looks mauve
I'm glad you said this
It's more of a common neutral tone. It's not like you go out with bright fucking orange eyeshadow, now is it Autumn?
@@bridger5477 Yes. I do. Don't you? When I say orange I mean orange. No need to be rude. Geez, get some manners.
@@bridger5477 Orange doesn't have to be neon lol. A lot of asians (who generally run the gamut from ivory to bronze) wear proper oranges as a soft base to their everyday eyelooks. It depends on skintone, but a nice orange doesn't automatically mean the look is crazy dramatic.
The easiest way to remember opposite colors without having to look at a color wheel is:
Easter Purple/yellow
Christmas Red/Green
Halloween Orange/Blue (blue replaces black)
Yesss
Halloween was always purple orange for me
All you have to do is mix two, any two primary colors. The last remaining color of that mix is the opposite on the color wheel.
Green is blue and yellow, two primary colors. The last primary color is red so red is the opposite
Purple is blue and red, last primary color is yellow
Orange is red and yellow, so the last primary is blue
I ❤️ Robert Jones!! I have a few of his books and I stalk his website 😂 what I love about him is he is the first makeup artist to address that some colors make some tan or darker skin tones look ashy!! I'm a light olive tan color and colors like satin taupe look horrible on me!! It was a time that all the beauty bloggers were using that color and I would try to recreate a look and it would never look good... He addressed this in one of his many fabulous videos, he said that taupe make olive skin look ashy, it's better to use a brown with more red in it he called it a specific color that I can't remember but he was 100% right!!!! I no longer listen to bloggers who say to use satin taupe, I mean I know that I have to adjust it to my skin tone and I ❤️ him for that!!! He had me at ashy!!
TopshelfNya313 I live for satin taupe....but I feel you!!!
Love the video! But he's like "this is gonna make you look dead" and I'm like "yes, that's what I'm going for, keep talking" 🤣
This is so informative and every makeup artist should watch this! thank you so much for explaining cool and warm undertones and providing great examples!
As a makeup lover this is one of the MOST informative videos I've ever watched on RUclips. Thank you!
Purple sits between blue and red on the color wheel. To make a warm purple you mix in more red than blue, if you mix yellow into your purple(red and blue) you are essentially mixing all three primary colors together and you get brown.
This isn't necessarily true. In order to make it more warm toned you add in yellow but not the same amount of yellow as the other two colors. If you add more red and it'll just look more red. You add in blue and it'll just look more blue. There's more than just the red and blue happening which is what gives a color depth.
Dying at everyone in the comments questioning this. Pretty sure this guy knows his color wheel.
I think it may be different for makeup 💄
i'm always so surprised that some people didn't learn color theory in like middle school
Most of us learn it in elementary or middle school, but not as it applies to makeup or really any real world application
This is the best video on the color theory I have seen! Finally someone that can actually explain it so it makes sense. Thank you so much for covering every topic! Much appreciated!
Sincerely,
A no longer confused esthetician
Great explanation! Can you do a similar video in terms of color correctors and concealer? Please and thanks!!
This is probably the most visual explanation I've seen yet and I LOVE it!!! Especially with the eye colour part of it. After years of going from my eye colour as a kid which was dark brown and have somehow lightened to a now hazel with brown green in them and every colour in between I love the colour I now have and want to play up the green in them. I've found that the purple shades work great with hazel eyes but now thanks to your visual guide I have a better understanding of how it works and shades that would go well on my eyes. Thank you for making this video, it was an awesome presentation.
Literally the only makeup pairing video I've seen that's actually helpful!
Omg awesome video! I'm such a visual learner and I like when my visuals are fun and easy to comprehend. This was hands down the best explanation of the colour wheel using makeup. I was glued to my phone watching. You defiantly made this a great learning experience for me, so Thank you so much!
WOW, I would have paid good money to have this class when i was in cosmetology school. Best and beautifully laid out, easy to follow.
This video is the most helpful I have seen in a while!! Thank you for posting!!!
Excellent - So clear and informative! Wondering also about factoring in skin undertones, pink or yellow, when choosing blush and lipstick.
I'm not even sure what colour my eyes are. They're a mix of grey, green and blue. How they look depends on the lighting and what I'm wearing. This video will help me be a bit more adventurous, I hope. I'm bored of nudes!
GoneWhenAutumnCame grey eyes tend to change colour from green to blue. It’s likely they are grey.
I have eyes like that and I've been really enjoying warm browns/oranges and berry/wine colors.
I have eyes like that too I swear the only thing that really really makes them pop intense is black
same. i love brown, copper, purple, pink
Hi, my eyes are light brown with a hint of a greish (???) green... Nudes look awesome, but I like rich bronze and browns, almost coppery ones on my eyes... 😊
You should write a book
+My Nguyen He has!
+AnaCarolMurray What the book name and where I can buy, I am in USA
Access his website or google his name, check the description of the video ;)
+AnaCarolMurray Thank
He has already done so!! He has about 6 or so books, a fabulous website, an academy and makeup tools!!! He really is great!! I've been watching him for so long... I think that he is sort of underrated!! But his books are available on his website and on Amazon! I have the kindle version of some of his books and they are great!! I ❤️ him and is work!
Us grey eyed people are always forgotten :c
Saya you’re one of the lucky ones bbg! Anything looks great on you 🤩🤩
I have grey-green eyes, I know the struggle. Lol. It's because they don't classify grey eye color as "grey eye color," it's classified as a shade of blue.
😥
Saya, I kept waiting for some hints for grey eyes. Mine are just grey...sigh
I was wondering the same thing too! I have also have grey eyes. Red eyeshadow? As a redhead(strawberry blonde or ginger), I loved when he said blush no darker than you flush after exercise. Huh? That puts me over in the ebony shade hues with extremely fair, cool toned skin. How do I balance cool eyes and cool toned skin with warm toned hair for lip colors? Redhead lips typically show quite ruddy hues like their cheeks, so pale lipsticks look odd, while darker hues make lips look older, thinner and receed. What do I look for to find a balance? Once again, it feels like my coloring is fighting itself. I would love some advice!!
This is so useful
lol I'm looking down in the comments and I see U
Mamayaa Opoku 😂 you know itttttt
I'm new to this makeup world, and I am learning that this is a complex art. This video was very helpful. New subscriber here!
I disagree on the lipstick. I'm the fairest neutral color. ANYTHING bright makes me look dead. Grey undertones taupes, grey purples and muted plums and browns are the ONLY colors that name new look healthy. Those colors you had near my foundation shade would make me look awful. I do have a very unique skin tone though. Very fair but light olive undertone...I look dirty and grey without makeup. Don't kept the pic fool you, that's really yellow lighting and all makeup is fake put on by an app lol! I've tried so many lipstick colors and the only ones that look good cannot have a pink base. Brown and grey bases are what warm my pale face up. I do agree lighter looks better but some dark shades look really nice too depending on the shade.
Sandy DiVa you've might experiencing bad color selection. Neither bright nor deep, if you chose the right color for you they're worked well. Olive (yellow-green color) toned person look great with red and purple. I'm olive person too and I admit that colors are my savior for makeup and clothings. Therefore I have to stay away from blue/orange as that two colors drag down my skin.
Sandy DiVa I am light olive too. It's a nightmare especially when choosing foundation. But warm red lipsticks look good on me.And I strictly cannot wear bronzers.Looks muddy.
I’m also both olive and pale!!! I hate that I can never find a foundation that matches me 😩 but on the bright side the olive undertones cancel out redness so that’s one less thing we olive girls have to deal with 😁
Thank you for explaining in a clear and easy to understand way. Good video!
I have blue eyes, and I wear a lot of bronze, gold, orange, and yellow shades.
Thank you so much you gave the best information for beginners to understand
You nailed it! Thank you for making this video!
I have the blue-green hazel eye and you are the first person to ever tell me they are hazel! I know the colors you listed for those eyes do make my eyes pop!! Every time someone asked my eye color, say DMV they just put blue! I also have time flecks of gold in them! So thank you for telling me what color my eyes are, finally!!! Also!! You're explication and demonstration is phenonominal!!
Best color theory presentation I’ve ever seen 😍
Wow amazing best video i have ever seen thanks so much helped me a lot.xx
This is absolutely the BEST and most useful color theory information for makeup I have ever seen! Thank you for taking the time to pull all the samples and work through examples. I have learned SO much!
It's also nice to know that a darker lipstick can make you look older. (I'm 28 but people think I'm at least 10 years younger most of the time and sometimes I get really tired of that.) The color wheel thing for the eye shadows made a lot of sense to me.. Except blues. I can never get along with blues (I have brown eyes). They always make me look like I come out of the 80's, I don't like it.
This is so helpful! I took notes and everything lol.
Morgan Jay I just keep rewatching it and then forgetting again 😂😂😂
I love this video. It's so informative and I learned a lot.
As an art student and makeup enthusiast I love this. So informative and educational
Thank you very much. I have dark brown eyes and Now I know which shadow to use.
Extremely informative, thank you for posting it. Sadly by watching this video I've discovered that my love of dark lipstick makes me look older - Boo! On the upside it makes my big lips look smaller.
For someone that is pale enough to pass as dead(LOL) this was so helpful especially with blushes and lips...awesome video!! Thank you!!
I just love u! This makes so much sense. U break it down simply
I wanted this video to last forever! Thanks for the wonderful tips!
These are things I kind of just picked up intuitively for myself but it is really cool to see it spelled out.
I also disagree a little with smaller lips with darker color lipsticks. It can be done but you kind of have to do an ombre lip or lighter in the middle. I would say that darker lips are trickier, not a no-no, for smaller lips.
This video gave me such an ASMR...this is beauty
Best video i have ever seen in youtube. You so helped me and answered to my questions. Thank you.
Best video I have ever found for color contrasting! Thank you so much for actually using makeup and showing so many right and wrong examples while explaining why!
No one ever covers grey eyes :(
because it a beautiful color, and not many people have it :) I wish I had grey eyes, but all what we can do is thank god for what we already have !
browns and almonds are complementary opposites to grey
Yes! Got to the end of the video and was thinking the same thing.
Warm shades like peach, warm pink, salmon, and orange look fabulous with gray eyes as does warmer browns and copper.
He discussed complimentary opposites and gave examples. It should carry you through if you paid attention. He's not going to go through all the eyes colors that exist.
I feel like the lipstick part is the only part where he was kinda wrong, I’m extremely pale with a cool undertone and dark lipsticks look great with my skin, in fact I hardly ever wear lighter lipsticks
I absolutely love this tortorial. Thank you.
THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO I EVER SEE!! LIKED AND SHARED IMIDIATLY !!!
When ur in middle of the last ivory/beige and first on the ebony/dark shade😂😂
When you're looking at blushes do you not have to take into account the undertone of your skin? Does that not change anything?
Julie Элизабет . I’m cool toned and I wear a warm peach. I think cool tone blush just washes you out. My personal opinion though
This video is perfection!! I've been trying practice picking out colors and undertones. I can't believe I haven't come across before. Love love love. So helpful!
Love this! thanks, this is very helpful! :)
What about grey silver eyes. Mine are grey and sometimes look green depending on what I wear. No one ever talks about grey eyes....help :)
Soft warm toned shadows look great with gray eyes! Peaches, warm pinks, salmon shades, and orange are all stunning on gray eyes! You can also do warm browns and coppers for a bolder look!
I have green eyes but I'm still gonna wear green eyeshadow lol
Same with the lipstick... I'm super light but I'm still gonna wear dark red.
I enjoyed watching this video and learned a few tips! Thank you for being awesome!
Best video ever posted on RUclips. Thank you so much!
Really good explanation but I can't help but ask if he's color blind. At first I thought it was the lights but even the words he added to the video lack orange
I am a graphic designer and I LOL'D so much to the color theory parts. The colors you used were so off for the explanation. I'll just hope someone else did it for him, he just explained the theory?
Wow, this was actually really helpful, thorough, and easy to understand. I really appreciate the effort that went into this. Many thanks!
This is BRILLIANT - thankyou!
What if my skin is like between the last shade of ivory an first shade of ebony ?Anyone similar?
go for something with mild brown undertones
Where can I purchase that color wheel?
Any art store.. I got mine at Michael's :)
The BEST makeup color video I've seen. Concise and practical information without the usual yadayada. Just what I was looking for. Amazing. Thanks
This was very educational! I feel like you don't often see something that teaches this so well, so quickly.
Why is there nothing for grey eyes?
Isn't grey a variation of blue?
Mine are a hazel variation of grey and olive green. It tends to go either way. I can wear most shades except turquoise.
Grey eyes look great with warmer tones like orange, salmon, warm pinks and peach. Warm browns and copper look great with grey eyes also!
I'll wear whatever color I damn well please. I'll bend it to my will and make it look good.

hold fuck this video is satisfying
This dude HAS to be colorblind. You cannot change my mind.
This is probably the best lesson on colour and make up I have seen! Thank you so much for doing this, I have struggle for a while to know which colours are the best for my skin. Many thanks xxx
Wow! This is probably the most helpful makeup color guide I've seen in my entire 54-year life! SO glad I found this tonight on RUclips! Thank you!
Purple is made by mixing blue and red so how come you describe a warmer violet as a color that has more of a yellow...that is not correct.
I think that a viloet color has more red than blue in it, in contrary to purple that has more blue in it (cooler).
What makes the violet warmer is more red into it not more yellow...
THANK YOU! I just read through the comments hoping someone picked up on that! There is no yellow in purple colors just variations of red and blue.
I think he was referring to undertones, warm tones = yellow, cool tones= blue. He also mentioned that make up colors don't completely work the same as normal colors.
Purple is made from a base of red and blue. To change its warmth or coolness you need to add yellow or blue because that changes it’s tint. Adding more primary colors only changes the color to a tertiary color rather than making it a warmer or cooler version. Colors are not just their two parts.
@@RUclipsgavemyhandletosomeone Thank you. You described it way better than I could.
I agree. Adding yellow to purple will make mud. Unless that's what you want.
First of all, that's not orange, that looks like a really light creamy color. And the primary colors are magenta, cyan and yellow (not red and blue).
Lucia Breccia I think RBY is the primaries for pigments and MCY is for printing and or light or something like that. They're both primary colors just in their own realms if you get what I'm saying. Learned this years ago so I might be wrong somewhere but point is, both sets are primaries
That's for light, not pigment.
FINALLY....I understand the color wheel!! Robert, thank you for making it SOOO easy to understand! Showing the actual colors of skin tones, lipsticks and eyeshadows was so helpful! Great video!
I have blue eyes, and i just LOVE pinks, berries, purples, and red (in that order). I wanted to hear more about pink! But maybe i really should incorporate more brown...
Omg the best explanation of this topic came from 11 years ago!!! All other newer vids are just plain confusing! Using those moving parts to demonstrate was sheer genius🔥🔥🔥 thanks for the knowledge
Thank You so much! I have been needing this info for years. I just subscribed to your channel for life...lol
