The thing about Micah is even though he’s a monster and a total snake, there’s something profoundly sad about him. There are moments where it seems like he genuinely wants to at least try to bond with the others, but due to his own volatile and rude nature, it just doesn’t work out. He knows he’s too far gone, so he gives up on any chance of that and figures he might as well just keep being awful and throw everyone else under the bus.

There's a letter that can be discovered in the game (forgot where, you can look it up) it's from Micah's brother to Micah, basically telling him to stop contacting him because he has a wife and child now and has no intention of letting Micah be a part of his life. I think it was mentioned that their father was even meaner than Micah, but his brother turned out fine and just wanted to get the hell away from his own family. Maybe Micah loved his brother but the feeling wasnt mutual. Hence the sadness you mentioned might have contributed to using controlling behaviour to get people to like or admire him

His discharge papers suggest that he was thrown out for a "don't ask don't tell" type thing. and you could tell that he tormented Kieran because he most likely had feelings for him, which makes Kieran's death a lot more sad when you think about it. Bill couldn't outwardly express his grief or his comrades might see that and think less of him... One of my favorite moments with Bill is when he, Uncle and Reverend Swanson are sitting around a fire at Shady Belle and Bill is talking about how everyone perceives him as dumb and how he feels like he's more than that. He seems to me like a lost soul, jaded and full of anger after a life of disappointment. I think even Micah could have become a better person with the right guidance, but instead the very things that made him an asset to the gang were the same things that ultimately drove him to destroy the only family he probably ever had. He's a walking tragedy who brings his ruin to everyone he gets close to, but you can tell he wasn't always like that. Something made him that way, something we never get to see or hear about

Here’s why I think he brought the gang down: Micah was greedy, and saw Dutch as a money making opportunity. He wanted the gang to grow weak, so he helped the pinkertons to kill off as many gang members as possible to the point it’s just him, Dutch, Cleet and Joe. So when the time’s right, he could turn on Dutch and take the money the gang has made without it being much of a challenge. This is why in chapter 6 Dutch constantly says: “we need more money”. he only said it a few times in chapter 4 because Hosea helped Dutch plan things out. However after he died, micah planned things for Dutch and told him he needed as much money as possible, (including the money in blackwater). This would also explain why he got angry after Dutch turned around on him before Arthur’s death. Because he lost his trust. Therefore he can no longer make any more stacks of money, and he lost the chance to get the money from blackwater.

But for real, looks like his dad was a real psycho murderer as well, and he taught him from a young age that survival is all he needs. Throw in potential abuse, maybe something to do with his mother, some trauma, and boom - you get this. Maybe he learned how to manipulate people in order to stay safe and bring money into the family. If he was hit by his parents, that means he probably sees the whole world as his enemy and as untrustworthy, so he realizes he has to fight dirty to survive.

That’s saying an A LOT about Arthur’s abilities alone considering the outcome of the job. And not to mention that Dutch trust Arthur completely to handle extremely tough situations for example when Cornwall confronts them outside the saloon in Valentine Dutch completely turn to Arthur on what/how handle the situation and trust him completely. If you want to get technical, in RDR1 Landon Ricketts calls John “sloppy” and with that being said can you really say that John was on the same level as Arthur in RDR2 if Landon Ricketts was calling him a mediocre gunslinger pretty much in 1911? after John has had plenty of experience? Arthur, while a bad man who has had his full of scuffles and skullduggery, does so out of necessity, to keep those he cares about alive and well (even if those people are endangering themselves)
Micah, on the other hand, while being the same bad man did not understand a fundamental thing that made Arthur noble…
He did not understand what caring for another meant. He’s only looked out for himself since day one.
And that’s why even with all the schemes, hardened crimes, and scandals he uses to try and emulate Arthur out of jealousy, he ultimately is missing a kind-hearted soul.

@@Alex.2319 Sorry I just can't stand Dutch at all. He talks a really good show but he is a snake through and through. He says one thing and does the exact opposite when it comes time to be a man of action. Man of Action. Now that is something that you rarely get to see. Oh he is quick to pull a gun nut he is not seen actually using it. When he is seen using it, the result is more often questionable than honorable. Judging from the company he keeps closest to him its easy to see why Arthur is losing his loyalty to the man by the time of his death. Arthur has begun to see and question the value of his own actions. And every time he points at the actions of the Rat his loyalty is the one being questioned. Javier starts turning as early as chapter 2 if you pay attention to his conversations with others and especially to Arthur when you are not facing him. Micah has been a terd the entire game. No matter how much perfume the gang throws on him his true smell just manages to always waft through to the surface. I like Charles. I like Hosea. I even like the former O'Driscol, and of course I like lazy ass John. He is young and he eventually grows out of it. Sean might have grown out of his bad habits as well if he had half a chance. As such I never got a chance to get attached to him. As for Bill, nope I remember what he did to John in the prequel. Since Arthur isn't allowed to have Romantic interests I never bothered with the women. Sadie is a true bad ass though. Would have liked to pursue Mary Beth but that is not in the script. Would have liked to see Lenny get a better deal than he got for sure. Oh and as for breaking him out of jail in Strawberry, how long was I supposed to wait until they hung him? It never happened and I got tired of hunting and fishing while i waited.

Micah is a sad character if you read his backstory. He's still a villain, but your empathy can't be so short sighted. He didn't fit in with the gang even if he wanted to, and in his mind it left him no choice but to do what he knew best. Fend for himself.
He so badly wanted Arthur to like him. And when he didn't, he attacked Arthur when he was finally weak enough to be attacked.
Great lesson for how we should all be good to each other, because if you aren't, it's how people like Micah are created

I always believed that Micah was the perfect character for the gang.
It frustrated me to no end that he was this likable most of the time, but due to the forced perspective and circumstances of the story line, he was pigeon-holed into becoming worse than he really was. Everyone in the gang was a criminal. Each and everyone of them were not good people. Ruffians willing to steal the pennies off a dead man's eyes to help make a quick buck. Micah was no different, he just didn't mince words or wear a false face to hide who he was.
His character, faults and all, made him by far my favorite. He was greedy, sharp tongued, and willing to do whatever was necessary to achieve results. He was the perfect opposition to the Arthur, and I enjoyed his interactions far more than any others. Sometimes I would find myself agreeing with his points and motivations.
It would have been so much more interesting if they came up with an alternate story path for Low Honor players where you sided more with him, potentially reinforcing John's transition to becoming a better person after the gang fell apart.
