    The closer to the transceiver, and the shorter the cable the better! Well done!

    Enjoyed your radio installation video. I was wondering about a few things. For the antenna it seems a high window frame installation vs. the deck mount would have been preferred. Three reasons: 1. Raises the antenna higher for a better signal. 2. Mounting would not interfere with mooring cleat as antenna is very close to cleat. 3. Antenna wire partially blocks starboard running light as light must be visible from dead ahead to two points abaft the starboard beam (for navigation safety and right of way.) Just my quick observation, not to be picky. Thanks for the wiring and hook up information...very informative.

      Glad you liked the video.. the reason i mounted it where I did was I can stand it up from the drivers seat.. It doesn’t block my starboard nav light at all.. it is closer then I like to the cleat but still not a problem.. I get a very clear signal and there is no inference.. some of the places I launch at higher tides ,I have to go under low bridges and need to lower the antenna.. and mounted where I did cuts down on vibration.. the aluminum is much thicker there and won’t flex.. anyway long story short.. mount yours wherever you want and do what works best for you and your boat.. thanks for watching and tight lines!

      No news, we caught the guys in video but not too clear. I wasn’t going to let it ruin my holidays. I have insurance just the thought it happen at 3:45pm and I live on a very busy street and 1block from the police dept!’They took in less then 20min. The ins will be paying it out next week, which mean now I have to shop and see if I could find a clean nice boat. The ISE show in next month, thru may have 2019 at a discount price!🤞🏽

    I’m in the process of purchasing a North River Seahawk. I’ve been looking at people’s rigging. Plan to install VHF-radio flush mount right side of helm. Garmin on top left side where you installed your radio. Visibility for everyone aboard will be able to see. Leelock anchor system. Folbe pole holders. Thanks for sharing.

      Awesome boats ! You will love it! I have another trolling motor video and vhf video on a sea hawk my buddy has.. we went with the anchor caddie system so he could swap out his rip tide ulterra for his river anchor.. glad you liked the video and thanks for watching!

    18 FT Is the optimum coax length. The coax acts has a ground plain. Run it around the front of thr boat do not coil the coax up. There is no ground plain on a fiberglass boat you can buy artificial ground plain that fit to the base of the antenna to get a better performance from the radio.

    Some great install info here if I was to install a new radio. Unfortunately for me, I have an old radio which the guy I bought it from said it has never been working? I had a friend look underneath the helm and he said it was a fuse issue and told me it was a 3 amp fuse. After taking a look myself ( at 70 yo with a hernia is quite a task) I could not id any fuse whatsoever, so can't figure out how or why my friend said it was a 3 amp fuse? It was like spaghetti junction under there and took me all of 5 mins to get out lol. Wish I could afford to change it to the same as yours, since I have the Lowrance fish finder. but probably too old also. I'll have to get the local boat yard to check it out.
    Only one thing I know about fixing steel to aluminium is electrolysis and thought I had seen you had something between the steel and aluminium but did not hear you mention how important this was. For me, as a pure novice your info is outstanding and I wish that I could start from scratch with it. So I am beyond your help on this one, but nevertheless, info about antenna quality and other stuff will be invaluable if I ever need it. Thanks heaps for your help mate. ....Oh and hope you had an awesome Christmas :)

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  4 года назад +1

      Nomad thank you.. most have a fuse holder like you can see on mine it is the big yellow pill looking thing on the wire.. some will be smaller and black or red.. they are usually a glass fuse.. if it’s really old it may have a screw in type in the radio itself.. it’s possible something shorted it out or was a voltage spike.. and yes you do have to be carful about electrolysis with dissimilar metals.. they do provide a rubber seal which helps with that .. and so you don’t have to use silicone on it..as always I really appreciate your comments and feedback! Thank you for watching.. hopefully you get the radio working.. if you didn’t live on the other side of the world and were local .. I would absolutely love to swing by and check it out! Hopefully you had a great Christmas!! I got some very nice rods and reels I’m about to take out sturgeon fishing in the morning!

    I turned off my batteries and took the keys out so I thought there was no power. When I cut the black and red it sparked. Any idea how this would be connected still and is it safe to cut? I stopped working on it.

    Do you have any issues with the antenna whipping around in the wind or when on plane and hitting your top or getting damaged.? Or is that a pretty firm antenna ? I assume that is an 8 foot antenna. Plus have you had any issues with sending and receiving signals and what has been the farthest you have broadcast.? Thank you for your post, I have a similar Thunderjet and am in the process of installing a marine radio.

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  3 года назад

      No the antenna and base are really strong even in rough days on the ocean or bay it’s never hit at all.. and on the ocean it has gone out id say pretty far.. 20 -30 miles or so would be the farthest I have talked to a buddy I know was a long ways off.. thanks for watching and hopefully that helps.. in the delta where the line of sight is broken up you get less signal distance.

    Good afternoon I have a cobra vhf radio and I installed everything, I did a radio check and a few minutes later the radio does not sound even when it is turned on, what could it be?

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  3 года назад

      Ok let me ask the simple questions.. is the volume up? Some units you have to push in the knob for volume or squelch .. also if no one is around you with a vhf on the same channel you will hear nothing.. they only work so far .. will the weather alert channel play?

    • @sandrorivera9728
      @sandrorivera9728 3 года назад

      There is no one near me with a radio and the volume is high, the radio simply turns on and it is not heard when it turns on or that noise as interference

    • @sandrorivera9728
      @sandrorivera9728 3 года назад

      it sure broke and it's new

    • @sandrorivera9728

      and the weather channel was heard for a while no longer heard

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  3 года назад

      It is still powering on and no sound .. then it could be a bad connection on the antenna.. if that’s good there could be a problem with the unit..
