yes, that's why it's so frustrating that he doesn't do anything with all that talent anymore. Other than singing lead on a couple songs in the Beach Boys show, it's easy to overlook him, but he sure was a great piano player back in the day, and he wrote some great songs.
"Disney Girls" has been my favorite track on the great Beach Boys album, "Surf's Up" since it came out in the early '70's. "Surf's Up" is a noteworthy album for many reasons, including it not having any surfing songs. This version of "Disney Girls" is also a beautiful version that shows Johnston's excellent voice and piano playing.
I because of the talent of Brian and Carl it’s really easy to overlook the talent of Bruce and Al Jardine. Don’t be fooled they’re both incredible musicians
Just beautiful! My favorite Bruce song of all time. Love this version. I've met him a few times over the years and he is a lovely, humble man. I told him when I first met him how much I loved this song. He proceeded to sing the song in its entirety- quietly, into my ear! (sigh)Thanx Bruce for one of the greatest memories of my life!!
This is by FAR not only one of the best Beach Boys songs.....this is one of the best songs ever composed..period. Almost every time I hear this song I cry, and this performance is incredible. Love 4:13 the way he says "and a little kid some day"
Bruce going to school at John Burroughs Jr. high on Wilshire Blvd...Going to Hollywood high with Ricky Nelson and playing football and baseball at the old Saint John Vianney high near the labrea tar pits..Living at the Ambassador hotel from 1953 through 56..My dad managed the Ambassador Hotel and I grew up doing my homework in the Coconut Grove meeting everyone who played there..A lifelong friendship with Harry Belefonte who became my dearest friend and role model as my mom had died in Long Beach at Saint Mary's hospital on Christmas eve 1953..Who would know then that I would spend the next 61 years playing music and singing,piano/guitar/trumpet/flugel horn, mandolin vibs and writing songs...I went to Disney World the first day it opened with my dad,Walt and Roy Disney,Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds..Eddie was playing the grove and dad knew everyone..It opened to the public the next day..Love that place and love the Tiki Room and your song Bruce is one of the best ever, thank you..Memories for me and I had the Jack Jones recording of the song...I was a close friend of Doris day in those years and she wanted to manage me but I had Stan Zucker who was good to me and shared an office with Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss on Beverly drive off of Wilshire....Stan managed Rusty Warren and because of her success I signed with her label 'Jubilee"....I worked for Doris at the Cabana hotel in Dallas in 1963 from Jan through October..I left a month before they got JFK..I was a close friend of Jack Ruby's..who would know what happened...Met Terry Melcher and liked him a lot..He was a talented man and loved his voice..His mom sang this song as you know.... I LOVE THE SONG ALWAYS HAVE AND THERE'S MORE BUT I HAVE WRITTEN A BOOK..GOD BLESS AND NO VIRUS..OK I LIVE IN FORT WAYNE...AND I STILL PLAY AND SING AT 80...
Bruce is really a very talented guy. A chance for the Beach Boys to have him join the band in 65.And this guy has still a really good and sweet voice at 72...
Okay so I just got into surfs up last week so I’m a newbie but I am floored at how amazing of an album it is. And this song is well... yeah... I had no idea how amazing of a player/singer/ writer he was. Love this song. It’s beautiful. Long live The Beach Boys.
Words fail me! Would you believe that there are still people that haven't heard this song?? I'm so glad that it found me. I think Bob's nodded off. Unforgiveable.
I have to agre with Eric...oddly while a fan of the BB's...I'd never heard Bruce's version until a few years ago driving home from work. I cry too when I hear it and it's one of my all-time favorites. Oddly, had I not moved from California in '58...I would have been Class of '60 Hawthorne High (along with Al Jardine) and lived a couple of blocks from the Wilson's...yet our path's never cross except for the music.
It is a great composition and that's why it's great both with just Bruce and the piano as well as the fantastic arrangement/production on the Surf's Up LP. The timing was perfect for it's release in 1971 with the nastalgia thing just starting, but it remains solid in 2009. Thank you Bruce John Hunter Phillips
I never knew this was a Bruce song until tonight! Have seen the BB’s since the 60’s, have always been my favorite band (surfer child) and always paired them with the Beatles. Brian was a genius, backed by a genius group of brother and friends. RIP for those gone, and Godspeed to the remaining members, you have touched so many lives with your music.
Have seen Bruce sing this a few times in the last 2 years and I feel in love with the song. I wish he had wrote more songs. To bad Maninlow got I write the songs
Always been a fave BB song of mine. Love Bruce's simple arrangement of it here moving emotion and honesty. A great classic song that fell through the cracks of commercial music. However, Art Garfunkel actually does a nice job with it too. Thanks for posting. For Vicki, Gere.
Reminds me of my first summer love when I was a kid on a free day out at a holiday camp, The performance and song are wonderful straight from the heart, It gets you. After hearing this I listened to the record by the beach boys and the whole meaning and feeling of the song was lost. Thanks Bruce, total classic in every way.
Wonderful lyrics and melodies can be found in many songs. It's the vocal harmonies that make so many Beach Boys songs what they are. Bruce Johnston was part of this. He was also a complete musician. He will likely never get the recognition or respect he so greatly deserves for defining the Beach Boys as much as any of the others. But he's always had mine.
Bruce and Al are my favourites! Bruce has probably got to be my all time favourite singer/musician too! He’s just so extremely talented and has such a gorgeous voice! His voice and his beautiful music always seems to calm me down if I’m ever having a bad day or am stressed! I agree!! I’m only 16 but for a while I’ve been hoping that I meet a man just like Bruce who I will marry 🤭🥰 He’s seems like he’d be the most perfect husband ever! 🤭 Such a kind, humble, down to earth, thoughtful, sentimental, gentleman, and sweet guy he sure is!! God better have a guy for me who’s just like Bruce 😂
What a talented artist, and what a shirt! I saw Love & Mercy the other night and I want to encourage everyone to go see it in the theatre if you have the opportunity.
Adam Whittaker I met Bruce in late April, he approached us sitting in the lobby of the venue. A nice, humble man who took the time to come over to mother and daughter, autograph their meet and greet tickets and chat. In 30 minutes he told us all about his life yet not bragging. Factual, smiling and as handsome as he was in 1975
Always loved this song, then I find this on you tube being introduced by none other than one of the UK's greatest song writers. Couldn't believe it. Everything about this song is fantastic, so clever in its construction, fantastically tuneful, and dreamable lyrics.
That’s Roddy Frame of Aztec Canera game! One of my favorite artists! I’m investigating their catalog now. Apart from the surf and car albums which are great, there’s plenty treasure from Pet Sounds onwards til the mid 70s. Fascinating band of incredibly talented musicians and then Brian Wilson’s genius.
Great to see Bruce in the mid-70s! Since he wasn't with the Beach Boys at that time I've never seen him perform during those years. Thanks for posting!
This is wonderful. I was introduced to the Beach Boys original via Art Garfunkel's amazing version. Now I don't know which one to love more - the Beach Boys, Artie or this? Artie probably has the edge for me, but this is still incredible.
my interpretation of the lyrics is that its about an acid head who is dreaming of the life he could/could have had if he wasnt living in a dream world. yeah...a sad sad song way i hear it. Beautifully great none the less
@wyatbroadcasting I can never see this as a Beach Boys song, this is for me a solo Bruce Johnston song. He had two great composing moments in his life; this one and "I write the songs". That´s good enough for me....
Words fail me! Would you believe that there are still people that haven't heard this song?? I'm so glad that it found me.
Beautiful song. Straight from the heart. Bruce is a brilliant musician.

Raw and stripped down on production and we are left with a wonderful performance of a truly great song.
Take a bow Bruce Johnson

It helped that you were female.
@@frizwhiz1090 She's probably really good-looking, too.
@@markmontieth8815 Yup! A Disney girl! 😊
This is by FAR not only one of the best Beach Boys songs.....this is one of the best songs ever composed..period.

Eric Sandoval Composed and performed by Bruce Johnston. He is a unique, humble artist to this day.
One of the most beautiful renditions of one of the most beautiful songs ever written! Musical genius!
Bruce Johnson. Had the privilege off meeting him in gateshead UK in 2017 fantastic guy. Superb musician

I am hearing this for the very first time tonight (3/2/22), and I think that this is now one of my favorite songs.
Okay so I just got into surfs up last week so I’m a newbie but I am floored at how amazing of an album it is. And this song is well... yeah... I had no idea how amazing of a player/singer/ writer he was. Love this song. It’s beautiful. Long live The Beach Boys.
My fav song of the beach boys !!!
He sings it the way her hears it in his head! The emotion and feeling can be duplicated by no one.
Such a well written song.
Bruce is such a great musician... Wish we heard more of him solo
Bruce Johnston - the BEST Beach Boy!
Sounds great on that acoustic piano, unplugged...without any other instrumentation.
I wish Bruce Johnston had sung as the lead in God only knows. He joins at the end and his part is beautiful
Truly beautiful - one of the very best!
a song for all time....it made me cry
Words fail me! Would you believe that there are still people that haven't heard this song?? I'm so glad that it found me. I think Bob's nodded off. Unforgiveable.

Lovely song. Don't forget he's only got a small recording crew in front of him not a live audience yet he still gives a great performance.
It is a great composition and that's why it's great both with just Bruce and the piano as well as the fantastic arrangement/production on the Surf's Up LP. The timing was perfect for it's release

This song is my second favorite on Surf's Up.
Bruce has such a gentle and kind soul, and nothing makes that quite clear as this song.
Gorgeous rendition by the talented Bruce Johnstone

He also wrote Tears In The Morning on Sunflower by the Beach Boys.
What a talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful song and performance by Bruce.
Thank you Bruce

Possible the most beautiful heart felt song ever written
made my morning.
Have seen Bruce sing this a few times in the last 2 years and I feel in love with the song. I wish he had wrote more songs. To bad Maninlow got I write the songs
Only heard this song for the first time earlier this year at a Beach Boys concert in Melbourne. Great song and it went down so well with the crowd.
Always been a fave BB song of mine. Love Bruce's simple arrangement of it here moving emotion and honesty. A great classic song that fell through the cracks of commercial music. However, Art Garfunkel actually does a nice job with it too. Thanks for posting. For Vicki, Gere.

Bruce Johnston time travels into the future and sings to the elderly and wheel chair bound Mike Love.
Beautiful song and Bruce is fantastic
Thanks BRUCE- Thanks for the memories and the beautiful heart ....
Beautiful....and reminds me of my Disney Girl
Goose bumps. Strong goose bumps. Bravo!
Fantastic song & performance!
One of my all time favourite songs!
I always loved Bruce. He and Carl have been my favorites, even though I love all of the BB. I'd marry a sweet and sentimental guy like Bruce :)

ALWAYS LIKED BRUCE, HE JUST LOOKS LIKE A NICE GUY
FRED ROGERS He has his moments. Lol
A truly beautiful song. A great song from a great album. The singing's none too shabby either.
Love to see a current, top-40, artist pull off something so simple and stripped down and make it sound so nice.
One of my faves too
That’s Roddy Frame of Aztec Canera game! One of my favorite artists!

Awesome creation. Love it!!!
The best , one of my all times favorites. Certainement une des meilleures chansons qu'il puisse exister pour moi.
Really beautiful and reminds me of my youth as mr Robinson said to Ben “ you’re only young once “ I realised It too late, Unfortunately.
Bruce’s masterpiece.
wow! didnt know that Bruce did this one, always loved it
This is wonderful. I was introduced to the Beach Boys original via Art Garfunkel's amazing version. Now I don't know which one to love more - the Beach Boys, Artie or this? Artie probably has the edge for me, but this is still incredible.
great song and great performance. would love to hear more from you, bruce,,,,,,,,!
almost brought me to tears
One word...wonderful!
Bruce rules!!!
xoxo The Clarences
Nice, a lot of soul from Bruce!
Respect to the composer, always!
But, my favorite one, is the Mama Cass's version. Absolutely musically complete.
I'll look for that, Thank you, for that suggestion 🎉
I remember Art Garfunkle's.
Bruce i can't believe you had a wonderful voice
Not just my favourite Bruce Song but my favourite Beach Boys Song!
This is great to see. I never knew this footage was out there.
Bruce Johnston helped write one of this first songs with LSD in the theme .. 1960 The Gamblers "LSD-25". fun fact.
Beautiful song!!! I would never have seen this if not for the Beach Boys!
Art Garfunkle has a version that quite wonderful.
Beautiful
So great.
A Beautiful Version of a Great Song.
Bob is definitely asleep in the background.
I like this guy's voice.
Amazing!
my interpretation of the lyrics is that its about an acid head who is dreaming of the life he could/could have had if he wasnt living in a dream world. yeah...a sad sad song way i hear it. Beautifully great none the less
I love it
Sunflower and Surfs up were good albums, many haven’t heard of them and only know the surf and car music of the early 60s
Loved it
Oh wow. Amazing. Thanks so much for posting.
Incredible
A real tour de force. Truly a Beach Boy.....ALWAYS.
Bruce is the coolest...
Muito bom!! Grande performance e grande musica!! =>
@wyatbroadcasting I can never see this as a Beach Boys song, this is for me a solo Bruce Johnston song.
He had two great composing moments in his life; this one and "I write the songs".
That´s good enough for me....
wow, i checked it out and i think you're right. I'm stunned! And, i totally agree!
Hidden gem
Is that Mike Love in the background sleeping in the chair?
Hahahaha!!!! Was thinking the same.
No,Mike love es calvo como una bombilla y ese men tiene hair!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Imagine.... he'd be sat stewing inside watching somebody with actual applicable musical talent completely expose him as a charlatan
Aww it’s Carl :(
its whispering Bob Harris
Its a great version of a great song. I love the Art Garfunkel too.
WOW
Sublime!
Love this song, proves there is a God.This could not evolve from some stupid Big Bang.❤❤❤
