I have DaVinci's version and I LOVE IT! BTW What's with the brown spots on the Daniel Smith & Schmincke swatches? Is Perylene Green one of those colors that bronzes under certain circumstances?
Ah, that's the scanner! This color does NOT play nice with my scanner for some odd reason, and comes in too red. I tried to balance it to match the real life swatches but some areas were just too far off.
"Here be Dragons!" Nice job! And helpful color info, thanks Denise! My first acquaintance with Per. Grn was Schmincke. Now I have all three brands you showed. Such a lovely, versatile pigment! For some odd reason I wasn't aware that it was a PBk pigment. Interesting. And oh!... the blue and earthtone mixtures especially. So sweet!
Perylene green is one of my favorite colors. I adore it. I use it mainly for a shadow color and foliage. Mixed with a pv19 makes the best moody violets. Love. That DiVinci version? Wow! It knocks the socks off the competition.
@Yasmine S. I have not. Do you mean the DS color? There seems to be a real, single pigment prussian green that's not much used, and a convenience mix with that name.
I wish that there'd be even more episodes of Color Spotlight where there'd be an insight about colors such as Crimson/Carmine, Pthalo Blue, Paynes Gray, the pigment information about "hue colors" and why is there white watercolor in almost every paint set even though we rarely use it.
I just LOVE your painting demos. The music, your voice, the techniques you share...all of it. They are informative and so soothing to watch/listen to! The results are always beautiful, too.
Swooning!!! over these cool combos using the perylene green. I picked up a tube a couple months ago and had not discovered these gorgeous mixes yet. I want to try some mixed foliage wreaths, perhaps some holly & berry illustrations for Christmas. THANKS so much for this video Denise. XO
I just figured out how to make a perfect dupe for perylene green. I couldn't find it in prime shipping for Amazon Canada so I thought I'd try to mix it. I used phthalo green blue shade, a bit of purple, some quin rose and a little pyrrol scarlet. I love when I figure out colour mixes, this is exactly why I got my Daniel Smith watercolour paints, they make such beautiful mixes.
Now that my painting and knowledge of color pigments have improved in this wondrous watercolor journey, I have come to adore this color! With that said, wow, do I love your Color Spotlights; such great information! Truly though it is your AMAZING paintings at the end of these installments that keep me coming back. I am mesmerized as I watch your brushwork, pushing the pigments so effortlessly across the paper. Sincerely, watching you paint your world of creatures has become something I truly look forward to. Thanks for sharing your talents and your knowledge. You have truly honed your craft to a level that brings delight to this viewer. xx
I just love Perylene Green 😍 and your mixes are so lovely! I like to mix it with Turquoise, the colour that comes out is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this video :)
Thanks Denise! This video was extremely helpful! I bought the DS version several months ago, but now am considering getting the DV. I love your Color Spotlight videos!
Just watched this one again and I have to tell you that watching you paint is mesmerizing! BTW, I use Perylene Green in my tree mixes for shaded areas and shadow area forest mixes.
Perylene Green is one of my favourite mixing colours for sure! Mixed with Pyrrole Scarlet it makes the most beautiful burgundies, rich warm chocolate browns and deep earthy greens. Amazing content as always :) Loved the dragon!
Great tip, I'll have to try that along with the other semi-opaque color that Denise used, Cobalt Teal. I took Pyrrol Scarlet off my palette and am using Perelyne Scarlet instead, but I'm going to try your combo which is just in time for the holiday season. Thanks, Joshua!
Your serpent is so majestic! Also, there's such a difference with the pigment concentration between Da Vinci and the other brands. Thanks for being a great RUclips creator.
I've been so psyched for this spotlight! I fell completely in love with per green from catching a glimpse of the swatch in another video, and I loved getting to see it highlighted 😍 A tube of this is at the tippy top of my Christmas list!
I absolutely love this video. Your voice tone was more serene than I have ever heard, despite your health. The length of the video was perfect. You still provided a high level of teaching me concerning this beautiful color. Your painting is soooo beautiful and the music you chose was relaxing and fitted the painting subject. It was a perfect blend of information and artistic serenity. An Effortless learning experience. with a bonus of calming my spirit. Bravo!!! , I am excitedly awaiting more.
As always it is great to watch how you paint. Loved the review and the end result. I love perylene green, I would never have known how beautiful it is without watercolour nerds like you!
Perylene Green is a beautiful colour - I love mixing it with Daniel Smith's Lunar Red Rock as it makes gorgeous granulating blacks, if anyone hasn't tried this mix I highly recommend it! 😊
Emma D lunar black pbk11 mixed with any colours make interesting hues , DS have many ready mixed colours ,I prefer the single pigment pbk11,to make my own.tfs
I don't have Lunar Red Rock, but it's PR101 so I'm going to try Perelyne Green with Indian Red or other similar PR101 colors. Agree with Emma, Lunar Black mixes nicely with other colors, I mix my own versions of Lunar Blue and Lunar Violet for great darks. I love color spotlights, I get so many great mixing ideas!
One of my favorite colors ❤️ Use it with Green Gold and Quin Gold for my greens and with Perylene Violet for my neutrals. Will try that Phthalo Blue mix though, never thought about that combination, thank you 😊
I have the DaVinci version. I like it, and that dark green colour in general, but I am not sure if I will get it again. I can mix it pretty easy with PG7 and PR254 (or PV19 for a bluer hue).
I got the Daniel Smith version of Perylene Green and I love it so far. I'm still learning how to mix with it and this video was perfect timing for me 😊
I checked and mission gold shadow green is not pbk31. It is a mixture of PG7 and PBk7. I am aware because I am trying to find a honey based brand that makes a PBK 31 (Perylene green)
I love perylene green! Its such a nice color. I first came to it from schmincke, but have since found a pigment dispersion and have made a handmade version. The dispersion is much easier to work with rather than dry pigment (i saw that you now have a muller) since it is already wet to mix with liquid gum arabic
Hey Denise, have you ever heard of watercolor palettes by Robax.com? The reason I ask is because last night I stumbled on their website through another video I saw by Angela Fehr (she had one of the 64-color carousel palettes and I was super intrigued). On their website I notice they have their circular palettes and square palettes, both with different shaped inserts. The square palettes have square inserts that look as if they would fit perfectly into the wells of your 30-well American Journey porcelain palette. I am trying to find a way to confirm this, because if that's true, it would be a game changer for those palettes. My main critique with the AJ 30-well palette is that once the colors are in, they're there to stay. So having the freedom to be able to lift the wells out and change colors would be amazing! Anyways, either way I thought I'd recommend Robax's palettes because I was surprised I had never heard of them before. Super underrated!
I'm sold. I was contemplating whether to get perylene green, sap green or hookers green. Perylene was attractive to me as it can get real dark & I enjoy colors I could mix with rather than an already mixed color that I may love or wish it was slightly different. Thanks for showing different swatches. It really helps me with making decisions on what to buy!
Another fantastic painting, he is beautiful! I just got DS Per. Green in my art store sale binge a couple of weeks ago, but after seeing the Da Vinci one, I may have to get a tube of it. Wow, what saturation! How rich it looks! My art store (Riley Street Art) only carries Daniel Smith (every single tube in the entire line!), M Graham, Qor, and Winsor Newton (pro and Cotman), but no DV, so if I want it, I may have to go online. I will have to call the Blick store in Berkeley and see if they carry it in store. Thanks again for another great episode.
Oh my God, my favorite series from my favorite RUclipsr using one of my favorite colors to paint the best mythical creature. This could not get any better tbh. Well done, and I hope you feel better soon. ❤️
beautiful color; checked my favorite brands, Winsor & Newton was the only other brand having this color; Mission Gold does have a similar one called Shadow Green which is also lovely, it also makes gorgeous blends. Gotta love your dragon : ) as usual, well done
I have Schmincke's in my palette(love all those dusky colours) but haven't really got time to play around with it yet due to just having started on a new job. That, or "my paints are to precious to paint with" - syndrome . I usually use mine to colour my line -heavy ink drawings, but want to go a bit more lifeless in the future. This one, especially the much water, less pigments washes seem like a good colour to paint foliage in architecture paintings and sketches where you would want greens to frame the buildings but the onlooker not to be pulled away from the building's design too much. I'd probably use this for the greeneries in one of those, washed out bluish Payne's Grey for the background and something that dilutes to a slightly warmer grey to shade buildings :3
Perylene Green is like THR BEST (single pigment) GREEN THERE IS! It’s so useful and beautiful and with other colors hard to make... it’s great as an alternative to black for me, and it really replaces neutral tints and even Payne’s Greg for me! I absolutely love it together with it’s cousin perylene violet, they make my go to dark! It sometimes seems to give a sheen, slightly reddish... does the da Vinci. Erosion do that too?
The Da Vinci doesn't lean red as far as I can tell. My scanner has a really really hard time picking up the color we see though, and always leans them more red. The DS and Schmincke samples had to have a lot of Cyan added to them to make them look turned to life! Weird indeed considering that it mixes like a cool color!
I don't have pr green in my palette but I'm not considering getting it. In Medieval mythology, a dragon was considered the embodiment of chaos, while the unicorn the embodiment of order. Interesting to see them mixed so successfully. I definitely want a print of this artwork.
I was so pleased to get the DaVinci version. I've coveted this pigment since I first saw it on your channel but the W&N, DS and Schminke aren't vegan. The DV was but is tough to get in the UK. was so pleased when a friend visiting the US was able to pick it up for me.
Thanks for the review I, as usual, had not considered the many ways this color will mix, and have to try them, after viewing your video. I have been looking everywhere for a perylene green that is made with a brand that uses honey. I thought I saw Sennelier had it but I think I was wrong and indeed from what you said, it is a newer color for watercolor. I have the Winsor and newton. I hope one of the honey-based brands will start creating this color.
I've got Perylene Green on my Christmas wishlist - such a gorgeous colour, I always like my mixing darks to have a hint of colour, and not just be straight grey (looking at you, Payne's Grey) - my go-to dark mixers at the moment are Sepia and Schminke's genuine Indigo, but I do feel like I am missing a green tone. The final painting was lovely - your dragons are amazing, and I'd love to see more of them in the future. Hope your throat is better. :)
This is the first time I hear some watercolors are better for glazing than others. Should have been obvious, but I had no idea. Do you have a video talking about this topic? I really want to buy some new watercolors soon (end of year sale) and I was planning to add more pastel and less intense colors, like cerulean and Potter's pink, which is a color I'm dying to try out. But this video gave me a new idea to consider. I usually add colored pencils on top of watercolors because I'm afraid my glazing won't turn out well, but I guess I just wasn't practicing enough. Also, I love the color spotlight videos. So informative. I usually stick to a basic palette with 1 cool 1 warm of each color plus some neons. So it's really cool seeing these new colors and their mixes 😍 I have a question though, how many colors, in your opinion, one can have in a palette before the amount gets overwhelming?
Hi there! I don't have a specific video on glazing but between color spotlight and Oto Kano's various series (she has a lot of pigment videos!) We talk about them s fair amount. Generally transparent non granulating colors glaze better than opaque or granulating colors. I like to keep 18-24 colors on a palette :) I hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
Steve at Mind of Watercolor has a good vid on glazing: ruclips.net/video/_58Eyyhv0gs/видео.html and there are many others. I also struggle with glazing, don't use it too much as I like lifting colors, but I learned a lot about layering in a botanical class. It's easier to learn using it in smaller areas.
Gorgeous green black color. All blacks have a base color other then black. In some blacks that s more obvious then others.Boneblack it s hard and even unable to spot the base color underneath.
Wow! Been catching up on your series, and I have to say that I really love this piece. I do have a question: what is the brush you used to detail out the fin along the spine and in certain facial areas near the end of this recording?
I don't actually think I have Perlene green in my collection, it is a beautiful color and mixes beautiful (I love moody colors. I need to get my hands on this color next time I have some money!
This is the first color spotlight I have actually watched through to the end. You did a great job and I’m going to look up your other spot lights, thank you for this wonderful content.
I have DaVinci's version and I LOVE IT! BTW What's with the brown spots on the Daniel Smith & Schmincke swatches? Is Perylene Green one of those colors that bronzes under certain circumstances?

@Yasmine S. I have not. Do you mean the DS color? There seems to be a real, single pigment prussian green that's not much used, and a convenience mix with that name.
Thanks Wm.. I live in an area with lots of pines and I will have to try this!

This color is amazing in mixes and glazing.Love the dragon! One your best. Love watching you paint.
Great spotlight!! I have holbein shadow green and I love it.
Just such a beautiful , rich color !! Beautiful painting too !! Thanks for all the interesting color combinations !!

Thanks Denise, yay Davinci and the sometimes overlooked cerulean blue. The mixes in the dragon were very special and fun!!! Take care and be well.
I love the painting!!! Thank you for this color spotlight...that green is amazing and exactly what I've been needing.
I love the different mixtures you can make.
Beautiful. Love it mixed with thalo blue. Will have to try that.
Very big thumbs up! I think this may be one of my favorite paintings of yours.

This with Perylene Maroon (PR179) is what I use for most of my blacks, which mixes a neutral/warm black depending on how much maroon you put into it.

I get something very similar to this mixing M graham's maroon perylene and phtalo green. It makes such beautiful shadows!
Known as the better black! For me...
Wow you did a great job!!!
Thanks!
Hello 🙂 what do you think about the Roman Szmal's version of PBk31?
OOOOOOOOO I LOVE HIM!!! Gonna have to get some DaVinci when my Daniel Smith runs out...
Thanks Jess!!
WOW. Favorite Color Spotlight creature by far!! Beautiful :) Are there no prints of this one available? :(
Hi Rori, I haven't been able to edit the print image yet, but it's on my to do list!
Wow! Been catching up on your series, and I have to say that I really love this piece. I do have a question: what is the brush you used to detail out the fin along the spine and in certain facial areas near the end of this recording?
I love this colour! Do you know if there are any similar colours in any of the more affordable brands such as student grade?
I'm not sure if theyre in student lines, but if you're in the US, Da Vinci's is vary affordable artist grade.
Wow❣️you are good 👌🤩🙏🏼
I don't actually think I have Perlene green in my collection, it is a beautiful color and mixes beautiful (I love moody colors. I need to get my hands on this color next time I have some money!
You're creative.
This is the first color spotlight I have actually watched through to the end. You did a great job and I’m going to look up your other spot lights, thank you for this wonderful content.
Slytherin green!
Sennilier's forest green begs differ! ;)
Holbein names its PBk31 as Shadow Green
I’d love to have you illustrate my children’s book
Thanks for the kind words, Lorrane. I'm not an illustrator, but I appreciate the sentiment!
I don't care for this way of displaying the mixes it makes.harder to see .
