Dandara is an excellent metroidvania that removes the most fundamental movement option of the genre. It's strange, but it actually kinda works!
    Songs used in oder:
    Dandara's Purpose (Dandara)
    Overworld Theme (Super Mario World)
    No More Singing Birds (Dandara)
    A Once Beautiful Horizon (Dandara)
    The Weight of Doubt (Dandara)
    Mae (Dandara)
    Dandara's Purpose (Dandara)
This isn't sponsored but Dandara is actually on sale right now (december 10th 2023) for about 3 dollars, it's a great budget game if you wanna try it out, it's pretty cheap. (sale is only on steam right now, not nintendo switch or PS5)

as a Brazilian, seeing Brazilian games being recognised makes me REALLY happy. Sometimes it look like we are just a fucked up place where people say Brazil mentioned and plays footbal, but having people looking at us and understanding the things we make, our music, our games and the people that live here, its makes me haply as fuck. Especially when its such a guy that i respect as much as you.

At $3 you got a sale out of me with this vid. I'm not even really a big fan of this genre, but this is a really great sales pitch for what looks to be a really unique game.

Day 2 followup: I beat the first boss, and I am very glad I saw this video before trying the game, because I don't think I would have twigged onto the importance of speed otherwise. And it isn't even really your speed as the player, because so much of the time (at least in the time before the first boss) your direction after a jump is what you want it to be. So a surprising amount of routine movement is basically mashing the jump button.
One bit glossed over in the video: the apparent subtitle is actually the name of the free-LC. So it is not technically a game committing one of the sins of video game titles.

It's a fantastic game. Difficult and disorientating, but so satisfying to learn. Story and lore was also very fresh.

0:40 Wow this is a reference off Abaporu

    • @thatguywiththecrazyhand4838
      @thatguywiththecrazyhand4838 7 месяцев назад +2

The game is full of references to brazilian culture in general, while most aren't as obvious as Abaporu, you can find references about musicians, writers and historical figures. There is a part of the game, in which the names of the maps are references, one example would be the music album "Clube da Esquina".
Dandara is the name of the wife of Zumbi dos Palmares, a really well know storical figure in brazil that is a symbol of the fight against slavery. This dialogs really well with the game themes about fighting against an opressive system. I'm 90% sure there are references about the military dictatorship we had in Brazil in some of the enemies stories, but the game's story is really surreal, so I am not 100% sure.

I always love seeing games willing to experiment like this. I find a lot of AAA games to be sameish, but the video game medium has maybe more potential than any other. It'd be a shame not to try to find those avenues.

Movement in this game reminds me of the movement system in a game called ruins story and it seems dandara was a clear inspiration for that game

In case someone doesn't know, Metroidvania is also a compound word for Metroid and Castlevania, since both games with their combined core mechanics bred a whole new genre.

Zelda II. I just talked to another bloke about this and it seems I might have mixed up information. I think it was the guy that made Castlevania that said it should be called a zelda like game, not a castlevania one. With that said, Team Cherry has stated that their inspiration draws specifically from Zelda II.@@TheTraveler980

This game is EXCELLENT. And you showcased it really well. If I hadn't yet played it, I would have probably picked it up right now.
Not extremely related, but… have you ever played Tumbleseed? I played it around the same time I played Dandara, and it's by far the most underrated indie game I've ever seen. It's an incredibly creative take on a roguelike, but for some reason it became known for being "too hard" (or perhaps "too punishing"?), and it failed spectacularly in sales. But beating it has been one of my favorite gaming experiences ever, and I'm always sad to see how few people have given it a chance.

Have you played Laika: Aged through blood? It is a very similar sounding game, very unique movement and combat mechanic in a metroidvania that is challenging but not punishing, set in an interesting world and rather nice art in my opinion.

The ending...i still haven't beaten that because i realized that it wasn't fun.
Could be skill issue....or maybe that gauntlet is sin. Who knows.

I´m thinking in getting this in physical for my collection, but feel I may get insanely frustrated by the "clunky" movement, I love metroidvanias but having to backtrack and go through a "(big?) stage using ONLY those movements? is not a bit boring/frustrating?

If you've got steam it's worth trying out since they have the 2 hour return policy. I think it becomes pretty intuitive fairly quickly, but your millage may vary so definitely do a bit more research if you're unsure.

I like your channel a lot so I want to give some feedback cause there's a few things that frustrate me while watching your videos. I don't want to sound mean though to keep in mind this is from a fan.
    1. I feel like you over-explain fairly simple concepts in a way that is kind of exhausting. I get that you need to explain certain things for viewers that aren't privy but you do it a lot and it interrupts the flow of the video.
    2. another thing that interrupts the flow of the video is a technique that it seems like you use in almost all of them and annoys me a lot. It's that thing where you say you're about to talk about something but you postpone it until further in the video to try to hook us. It's incredibly jarring and kind of annoying especially when you do it multiple times. It's okay to foreshadow something but the way you currently do it halts the video completely.
again, coming from a fan and I love your videos and I just want to see you improve!

    • @mhswoocer
