I feel like the masterpiece experience of Outer Wilds shows with its fanbase as well. As much as we want as many people to play it as possible it's so hard to describe how it's good without any spoilers. And most, if not all of us, refuse to spoil it in any shape or form. All I did was gift a few to some friends and say, "trust." No other game I want to experience again vicariously like Outer Wilds. Truly a masterpiece.
i literally do not see myself playing it again unless if i were to fall down a flight of stairs and get amnesia, i can only live through the game again by watching other people play it. it's a shame that i have to just trust in the fellow friends i recommend it to give it a shot, but i give it my best for a game that's been #1 in my favorite video games
So, for a game to be considered a masterpiece: It needs to be one of a kind title that may also stands out from the crowd, and it should "change you" in a way where you either have a new love for the genre that game belongs in... or it sits on top of everything else you're familiar with.
Basically yeah. I think if I was asked to define it as simply and objectively as possible, I'd say what I said right before the outerwilds section. A masterpiece is a one of a kind game at the top of it's class that changed the gaming landscape. But the medium itself is so subjective that my other, more personal definition is just a great game that changed how you look at the medium, or even life as a whole
And with this and your Crosscode/Indie game video, you got a sub. Being able to bring objectivity and subjectivity to an agreement is amazing in itself.
Love this one. The points you touch on, the pacing, the sort of recontextualization at the end. "Masterpiece" will mean something different to everyone, and who's to say one person's treasure ISN'T a treasure? Maybe best of all, the Subscribe Button gag remains as seamless as ever.
Outer Wilds is a game I've always wanted to try, but from the looks I can compare it to No Man's Sky, except instead of focusing on the "Exploration" aspect, it seems to be more the "survival" aspect? Either way, I always defined a masterpiece game as one that clicked with the players in such a way that they couldn't put it down after picking it up. One that gave them meaning and inspired them whether through the gameplay or the storytelling. One that gave them a reason to come back to it countless times, even after beating it. One that had an impact emotionally, whether it touched on relatable memories or left a deep imprint inside. Some good examples in *my* list include 2 Zelda games, Link's Awakening(the first one not the remake) and Skyward Sword, Such Art, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and Adventure Quest. All for many different reasons.
Outer Wilds is one of those things that can’t be described properly without spoiling the experience somewhat. If you’re curious, you just have to bite the bullet and put your trust in the people who told you it was great. I know I don’t regret it, and I hope you won’t either if you ever choose to try it!

Something that I think is worth a thought is the origin of the word "masterpiece". I think of it whenever there's a discussion about the topic. "Masterpiece" (or commonly "masterwork") is a term that was long used in arts and professional trades, and is even still used by many art guilds in it's original definition: a masterpiece is the work that you create to "prove" mastery over your craft. It was the thing that a journeyman craftsman would create to show their guild that they had sufficient skill to be given the title of master. Think of it as a PHD dissertation, but as a physical object. Historic "masterpieces" are truly fascinating things: sometimes, they're innovative- employing techniques never before seen in their profession's community. Often, though, they are a kind of CV of techniques; intentionally useless or even grotesque works that simply exist to show everything the craftsman can do, all at once. I used to be a traditional-methods blacksmith. A smith I had apprenticed to showed me his "masterpiece", once. It was, ostensibly, a shovel... but with all kinds of strange shapes jutting out of it. It was amazingly, beautifully made, but it was just a catalogue of smithing techniques put to steel. It was absolutely useless as a tool and kind of uncanny as an art object. But it proved he could do it all, to an exceptionally high standard. Naturally, language drifted, and masterpiece has been used in common parlance - as simply a great work, the work of a master, or the "best" thing a particular artist or group has done - for a few centuries, at this point. But I'm still rather taken by this original meaning, and whenever folks have trouble defining what they mean when they're compelled to call something a "masterpiece", I am reminded of this. A masterpiece is proof to any who look upon it- indelible, inexorable proof- that it's creator knows what the hell they're doing. Loved the vid. Sorry for the TED talk.
The term "masterpiece" comes from medieval guilds. A certain guild, let's say a weapon smith guild, would limit the amount of people who where allowed to smith weapons in the given city. And, since they where limited, they wanted to make sure only the best people would be given the title of masters on their guild, as It carries the whole weight of the guild with it. How they tested is by the tested craftsman creating a piece of his work, on the weapon smith example a sword, and this piece being evaluated by the guild heads to decide If the work is on par with the guild's name. That means a craftsman's masterpiece would be the thing they would put all their knowledge, skill and care into to make it the best piece he ever made. I think the same could be applied to games in a sense. A masterpiece game is one that we, the consumers, can notice the developers used everything they had to use and more and it is the absolute best thing they could make with such a high quality that puts them in the position of the greats in our view. You could say, it grants them the rank of masters.

So yeah, I guess Elden Ring really is a masterpiece for me. Throughout my playthrough, there were so many moments in which I was so blown away, I just knew the game was a masterpiece. But if I had to narrow it down to just one, it'd be the first time I entered Leyndell. The city is breathtakingly beautiful and I spent a good while just staring at the scenery. And the best part? You can explore all of it. And I did, for a good while. And because I love Leyndell so much, [spoilers] really hurt a lot...
I remember seeing a random youtube video a LONG time ago where a professor lays out 5 criteria a piece of art needs to be considered a "classic". I wrote it down because I thought it was fascinating, and I think it is worth bringing up here. 1. Adresses permanent & universal human concerns 2. Game-changer 3. Influences greater works 4. Respected by experts 5. Challenging yet rewarding I think the 1st point is the part everyone misses, super mario galaxy & elden ring do a great job addressing human's innate sense of wonder, while also drawing upon the tragedy of it (ending of super mario galaxy, lore of the lands between). if you go looking for it, almost every game considered a masterpiece does the same thing. majora's mask, nier automata, disco elysium, breath of the wild, outer wilds, etc. they address issues THROUGH the medium of video games, in a really profound and thought-provoking way.
3:02 Whoa, whoa, whoa, speak for yourself, buddy. As a true Elder Scrolls veteran, I didn't even know there was a staircase; I just jumped up the side of the mountain until I reached the marker.
By definition, a “masterpiece” is a work produced by an artisan of a craft, to prove among fellow craftsmen, a mastery of the craft. Your masterpiece was what took you from being considered a journeyman to a master. A lot of these games live up to that
Let's not forget, one of the best things about BotW is not just that it's a stellar open world experience, but it's a true sandbox open world game as well. The interactivity between the environments and the player is something you hardly see in many open world games; even in Elden Ring, it lacks that sandbox feel that BotW has, but obviously they're two different types of Open World games. BotW gave us something that players didn't even realize they needed: climbing anywhere and on anything(in most cases), to transverse they world. Now we're seeing more Open World games do that, but it feels like they've missed the point, in my opinion; because the climbing works thanks to the sandbox and physics associated within that sandbox. Even in the dungeons, the way you fight mobs, etc relies on the physics of the game based off it's sandbox. And I agree on that idea on what a Masterpiece is, and how it ultimately falls down to more of an personal and individual taste.
Shoutouts to all of the modern games that used to be masterpieces, but were destroyed by their own devs (and sometimes by extension communities) by out of touch content updates/patches, or shut down from a lack of popularity and funding. If I could somehow play you all again when you were at your peak, I would. But perhaps then I'd never get to discover and play new masterpieces...

Just played XC1 for the first time with DE. Easily the best RPG I’ve ever played. While I adore XC2 for as much as I’ve played thus far (on Chapter 8), playing it directly after XC1 left me having to adjust my expectations lower for story/voice acting/dialogue early on; in doing so, however, I got a level of enjoyment similar to XC1 out of XC2 through its music, world design, overarching lore, and more rewarding combat system. Between XC1 and XC2, I’m sure I’ll love XC2-TTGC and XC3. Monolith Soft has solidified themselves as one of the finest studios in all of gaming
From my standpoint, Videogames don't need a gimmick of being Masterpiece! Videogames are very unique side of entertainment media that U dont get by watching a movie or series but modern day obsession of making their favorite a masterpiece is what make games less valuable!
Any one can make a piece that they claim to be an example of their work. Said work is free from inhibitions, caveats, financial hardship. But it very well could be created through the use of these things since its art at the end of the day. A master work is decided by the artist at hand and is further validated by the community at large. Ex. I am no professional writer, yet I've written many a essay in college. One of my last few essays, that was specifically written for a California State Exam I KNEW i had put my all into and I also gace that thing every thing i could. All of myself and my opinions and my attempt to explain that opinion and stance. I knew it was MY master essay. Came back with a perfect 100 Mastpieces are created in the artists mind first.
