I think it's about getting old. You build your body (house) out of food (barley, green peppers etc), you build a world and a life (a simple garden) but eventually your hair goes white and all the colour drains out of your life. The sad blue eyed drummer rehearsing for your funeral, making you aware of your mortality, the chicken (representing how humble and insignificant you are) preparing to strike you down, the spider representing being caught in the web of life and the cobwebs of an abandoned space your life once filled. The whole mood of the song has the melancholy and pathos of the impermanence and fleeting nature of life.
Thanks For The Comment Sir !
I love this interpretation.
That's an amazing interpretation!
Wow! Love your interpretation.
Beautiful comment. Thanks for sharing this
These lyrics are difficult to pin down, but the impression that I get is an imaginary world that we all live in in our mind to express where we go to escape the reality we face every day. This escape "into white" keeps us sane, but eventually the realities of life creep back in.
The violin is just magical and takes you away……..
One of the most beautiful songs ever written right there.
Such a melancholious song. Used to I had my record player on repeat for hours. You are such a great and talented singer Cat. I missed you all those years but now you are right back into our lives and that feels wonderful. Forever yours. love from the Netherlands.
The impact that cat Stevens had upon my early 20’s cannot be understated I just found him again, and my god the memories.
This song is like living in a fairytale. It's like a midevil lyrical. Very beauriful with the visual lyrics and the nstrumental.
He's painting a tone poem, with the realization that it all originates with and turns to white anyway. The basis for all color is white. White is the blending of all colors and is a color. Explanation: Light appears colorless or white. Sunlight is white light that is composed of all the colors of the spectrum. Everything empties into it.
I remember buying Tea for the Tillerman so many years ago. I didn’t really understand the lyrics to Into White back then, but as I’ve grown older, got married, had children, lived my life, and now a grandparent , the lyrics have meaning. For it’s about ageing. The colour and vibrancy in our lives when young gradually fade through our years becoming more peaceful , fading the colour gradually until the white of old age and passing on.
An acceptance that we must eventually leave and not to be afraid of where we are going but to look back and rejoice in the life we have led.
Sorry, I am obviously losing the plot here .. time for bed ! Lol.
That is a beautiful commentary
love this song...and that sweet violin....
I am a singer/guitarist & my musical partner told me it was about Cat Stevens garden. The lyrics refer to different flowers eg. A blue eyed drummer is a flower & so are some of the other lyrics. + his chickens & a door mouse are mentioned too.
@@CarolWheaton I meant overstated!!
Song invokes such a peaceful feeling ❤
This song is almost like a nursery rhyme to me. It had meaning perhaps when it was written, but it's so vague & sharply visual all at once, that it belongs fully to the listener. For most of my life I've used this song to get myself up & cleaning my house.
Well said. I think they describe a dream. And the dreamer would have understood. A dream with symbolism that has deep meaning in relation to events in the dreamer's life at the time of the dream, but cannot be considered coherent without the context of how those symbols relate to the dreamer's specific situation.
I don't think that, of themselves' the words have a specific meaning. I think Cat Stevens is painting a beautiful picture in song. I for one, can see it clearly with my mind's eye. A vivid imagination is a gift - I am blessed to have one!
Such a beautiful peaceful song l have loved this song since l was a. Young teen first time l heard it l felt peaceful.thank you for this besutiful song Yusuf/Cat Stevens
The lyrics don't make sense, and yet you can see everything clearly in your mind.
Thanks For The Comment !
That is precisely the true meaning of poetry.
My shot at what the song means to me: Various items, living or not, of various colors are used to build his house and are mentioned. They all 'empty into white' because they are all miracles of a creator beyond our understanding. This creator makes our house, a place where we can sleep in security, just like the lady mentioned in the song.
This song describes a yellow day at my farm! Of course, its spring. The sweet air, rich in sunlight, and white blossoms fill my orchards. As little James runs and plays.

Its a mediation on life and love of the environment from an artist who also entitled one of his albums "Buddha and the Chocolate Box". He was grappling a little with fame and yet still unsatisfied and exploring religion particularly in it's mystical aspects finally settling upon Islam for himself. Far from nonsense the lyrics make perfect sense to anybody cloistered in a rural location, whether monk or secular, with the "white" being not just satori or samadi, i.e. joyfully happiness for those who have ever experienced this, even perhaps enlightenment: it is the perfect mystical moment or peak experience everybody dreams of, or certainly should as although similarly fleeting it is a far richer experience than fame, money and all of those distractions of a fleeting life within samsara. And yes all this can read into the song with help from just a little bio of Yusuf Islam. I hope this helps you upon your own journey and may the Budhha similarly smile upon you via this hauntingly mystical song as he certainly does for me. C.f the Beatles "Across the Universe".
The same as american Bob dylan, driving to Christ
Pure poetry!! 🎶💕🎶🌈💕🎶✨️🎶
Beautiful...sounds like dream language ! 🥰
this is my most fav song of Cat Stevens. I think this song is about Death. the last line "With everything emptying into white."
The Collective of energy that keeps us All One with the Creator.
Life is a kaleidoscopic dream emptying into the white light of awakening.
Could be the interpretations below of audience. Could even be a spiritual commentary on living and life, an enlightening of consciousness. After this song Cat left worldly fame for the fulltime rebirth into his spiritual faith community. All materialism surrendered to his white light experience. Cat's lyrics speak to whatever each person is seeking.
So so beautiful........
Beautiful song that explains that finally everything has come to an end and we are all going to die.....
What a beautiful interpretation…. Thanks!!!!!!! ❤
Material detachment? A dream? A room? A paint? Cat Stevens blowing My mind 👐👐👐
And He is before all things and by Him all things consist. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. God dwells in unapproachable light. So, therefore in the end ALL things real and imagined empty into that light, in this case the light is the 'white.' EVERYTHING empties...into white. That would include blue eyed drummer boys, black spiders, and red legged chickens, oh and houses made from barely rice. :) Easy.
Yes, saw him in 1976. Converted to Christianity never looked back.
Another beautiful Cat Stevens song.
Thanks For The Comment!
An Amitriptyline dream! A vivid colorful dream evoked by the psychotropic drug! I have them all the time!
Beautiful!
I see the song as pointing up the simple things to bring us joy because fancy houses and material things all fade away anyway. Yes, I believe the yellow Delaney is definitely a flower and she sleeps well at night knowing she is safe and cared for.. loved. The sad blue eyed drummer might be a flower too ... why is he sad? Does he grow on a grave? The black spider is dancing on top of the eye. But, the red legged chicken is a symbol of death to end the spider's dance. So, dance while you can...
This song ask me to focus less on material things: everything in the end INTO WHITE
My fav
Violino belíssimo!
Love it!
When I first heard this I thought the words were " Everything in the end into white" I was thinking it was about Death and dying, "In the end" we all die and are welcomed with the warm bright "White" light. Now that I know it is "Everything emptying into white" I still think its about Death and Dying.
same here. Can have different meanings, but this is definately one of the meanings lying in there. After my partner died in my presence of sudden heart stillstand I was in deep trauma shock for a while, and all I could see around me was emptyness and white...
I see a young & broke singer-songwriter, sat in the upstairs window of his freezing cold flat as it starts snowing. A few coins left, will he feed the electricity meter for a little more warmth, or succumb to the swinging cockerel signage on the 'Courage' pub over the road? - nice & warm in there; for a while . . . The snow is now falling heavily & covering everything : )
Beautiful and deep
Talking about painting...You start with a white canvas . You tell a story when you paint, no matter what you are painting
sad lisa
It is ethereal... White ...bright...an end all. I don't know.
I think they describe a dream. And the dreamer would have understood. A dream with symbolism that has deep meaning in relation to events in the dreamer's life at the time of the dream, but cannot be considered coherent without the context of how those symbols related to the dreamer's specific situation.
To me this song has been like a song about HOME
Mood
I just felt myself empty into white
❤️❤️❤️
The rainbow of life going into godhead.
It is a song from the hippie time. Lots of weed was smoked. Lots of pills were swallowed. In my opinion the song is about the irrational emotions apearing during LSD or smoking pot. - I mean i heard "Tea for the tillerman" lots and lots of times. And i was always high when i listend to the music. All tracs of Yussuf Islam are fine music. Still i love this one and "Catmando" the most.
Subtitles please
I'll show you Russmormon in case you think I'm Jack.
It doesn't make sense at all... unless....
maybe with some help from Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds?. O Yusuf!!..😏
I think you’re all too young to understand the simplicity of it
