  • One of the coolest and fastest planes to visit Piket airfield Sinj! The speed record for Piket Airfield is held by the Messerschmitt Bf 109 back in the WWII days. The Mitsubishi MU-2 is a Japanese high-wing, twin-engine turboprop aircraft with a pressurized cabin made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The first flight was back in September 1963 and was produced until 1986. This particular MU-2 was made in 1978. It is one of postwar Japan's most successful aircraft, with 704 manufactured in Japan and San Angelo, Texas, United States. In short this is one of the coolest planes I had a chance to fly.
    Many thanks to the pilot for this nice and short hop from Piket Airfield LDSS Sinj to Split Airport SPU/LDSP!

    I just loved seeing that ... I have about 1200 hours in the Rice Rocket .... Such a beautiful plane to fly ... Hard to believe for those who know the plane and it s reputation for noise outside the plane ... it was quietter inside than it was our Cessna Citation C500 Jet. Beautiful Plane ... thanks for the video. !!!

      Had a MU-2 in SYR for years, beautiful plane. And yes it had a unique howl when taxiing so you always knew the MU-2 signature from anything else which was cool.

      Worked at an FBO as a teen. One of our frequent customers flew one of these. It was an awesome plane but it was by far the loudest plane we dealt with at idle and during ground movements. They definitely have a mixed reputation. Safe when flown by the numbers but easy to be caught out when flying outside the normal parameters (engine out, etc).

    About 23 years ago, I got to ride along in the copilot seat of an MU-2 flying night express. We flew from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, all between midnight and 8 am. That included sitting in the pilot’s lounge in Philly for 20 or 30 minutes. That’s a fast airplane.

    Good to see my old aircraft is still flying. It was a great plane to fly . You just had to learn to remember it had spoilers and pay attention to cross wind landing. Was a great short field are craft. It used less runway than a 58P Baron. Thanks for some old memories.

    Until the pilots were trained to fly it a bad safety record. Back when I was a kid at CGS there was a corporate pilot there the flew a King Air and an MU-2 for the company. I asked what they were like. He said o"n a dark nasty night the King Air was like your mom getting you home safely. The MU-2 was like the crazy hot b*tch you picked up at the bar giving you one heck of a ride." Never forgot that even now 45 years later.

      Don't stand under the tip tanks when you bleed off the tank pressure before fueling or it's a kerosene shower. I hear they taxi halfway decent with the gear up.

    I can't remember the last time I saw an MU-2 .Cold easily be 15-20 years or more. I live along the approach to 31-13 at Chicago Midway. At the time, there was an over night freight delivery operation, flying MU-2s there. I'd see (or hear) a Mitsubishi several times a week. They stopped operations there, and I've only seen ONE MU-2 since then.

BUT boy was it loud and a fuel sucker. Anyways enjoyed it but sold it a few years later and got a 182T whi h did the same thing just quieter and a heck of a lot less expensive.

      Faster than some jets on some flight segments, high wing loading, no ailerons - spoilers instead - very big flaps to support a broad flight envelope. The MU-2 should be treated like a jet. Too many pilots got behind the curve flying this plane, which is how there were more than its share of crashes. The FAA decades later scrutinized the original certification and found nothing wrong, but mandated a Type Cert. 40 years ago a guy in my neighborhood flew the MU-2 and said he regularly beat original Citations between SLC and LAS Vegas, on block times.

    This looks like the longer subsequent model. One of the drawbacks of this aircraft has to be the very short wings providing minimal lift which means they've got to be flown very fast. The local airport was partly renamed after a local operator that died flying one.

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg Год назад +2

      That is absolutely false. It is a high wing load design, makes it less forgiving of poor pilot skill but better in turbulence than most aircraft.
      This is one of the best short, unimproved field aircraft available. Used to see a lot in remote areas of Alaska used as air ambulances and supply transports. The Kodiak’s now fill that role in part due to availability and to reduced pilot load. The mandatory annual type training has dramatically improved safety record but also limited the mission role of the MU2. Brilliant aircraft, still nothing can match its combination of speed, efficiency and capability
