    The Zero is an absolute masterpiece. It's a tragedy there are so few left.

    • @nooooru
      @nooooru 5 лет назад +64

      @Craig Wooldridge It is a masterpiece, in terms of overall engineering. And it is probably the only fearful weapon that held advantages to U.S. counterpart, even only for one year or so. Even Yamato class can't campare with it, IMO.

    • @nooooru
      @nooooru 5 лет назад +45

      @Craig Wooldridge I did answer that. Zero fighters are in their best shape when given birth. The designers successfully put all the resources they had together to achieve a specific goal, and scored quite a bit, THAT, makes it a masterpiece. The armor thing, among others, is its major weakness (it is part of the trade-off when you don't have a powerful engine, and everybody knew it), so what, nobody said it's perfect right? Venus de Milo is handicapped but still, masterpiece, no doubt.

    • @nooooru
      @nooooru 5 лет назад +37

      @Craig Wooldridge I'm sorry I don't have a degree of English literature, apparently I need that to be able to talk to you. But I do hold a bachelor degree in Aircraft Design and Engineering in China. So I guess I'm playing dumb only.

    • @nooooru
      @nooooru 5 лет назад +31

      @Craig Wooldridge First of all, the designers are not allergic to large engines, they simply can't have it (build or import). Then, if like your way of design, they would probably end up with an IJN version of P-40 and get ass kicked even harder in the Pacific Ocean (probably not true because with P-40 they won't dire to plan Pearl Harbor due to speed and range).
      Instead, they had a strategic mind, invest in the essence of dogfight and made well-calculated trade-offs and utilize what they had really well. The results proved well. That's why I call it a masterpiece. If their industry could supply later models like A7M or N1K1 (which did include your safety measure), the whole story looks pretty reasonable.
      At last, it is a matter of opinion. I won't try to convince you if you think otherwise. Zero's nemesis F6F outperform it in almost every way, I still don't think it is a masterpiece, because it is privileged as a later model and, uglier.

    • @nooooru
      @nooooru 5 лет назад +25

      @Craig Wooldridge Again, you're free to think otherwise. Clearly, your "masterpiece" in mind is "who won" and that's fine.

    日本人は戦争のトラウマで大戦機の維持、ましてや飛行展示なんてタブーだったので、アメリカさんに飛ばしてもらうのを見るしかないってのは残念だけど仕方ない。
    ところで、当時の日本機なんて規格もバラバラ、素材も独特なのに稼働状態を維持して、当たり前のように飛ばせるって、大変な手間ヒマお金、愛情を注いでる証拠。アメリカさんの度量には脱帽ですよ。

Wow my opinion of the plane has changed. It's beautiful. The technology for the time was astounding. It must be a blast to fly. I had a chance to talk to Steve Hinton once about flying it. He loves it. Amazing piece of engineering and a true work of art.

    現代の輸送機や旅客機をみても一つもピンと来ないのに、戦う姿すら見たことのない戦闘機は一目惚れするほどカッコよく映る。人は、戦闘に特化したものが一番美しいと感じるからなんだろうなあ

    Heard an interview with a Japanese ace and he said the zero was the most beautiful plane he has ever flown in his aviation career. Handled like a dream. He also said it was horrible as a combat plane. He mentioned that every time he went up, he felt like he was going in a sword fight wearing a bathing suit.

    • @nightlightabcd
      @nightlightabcd 5 лет назад +13

      I can see that. At first, the Zero ruled the skies, but with no armor or self sealing tanks and no bullet proof windshield, to save weight, that came to a end and the Japanese was unable to update it's war materials, same as with Germany! Everything was for the top and a quick victory, and we all know that works out, as in the Civil War for example!
      Every war starts out with the idea that we will be home by harvest! It seldom works that way!

    • @hugbug4408
      @hugbug4408 2 года назад +1

      The Zero was good for its time. But , Germany and Japan had problems in fighting a attritional war. Similar thing that happened to the Confederates in the American Civil War in that a great amount of resources are needed to fight a war in duration otherwise the industrial , and financial might will be victorious!

    June 7, 2018----I remember this plane. It flew into Stead, Nevada's airport back in 1995 for the 50th anniversary of WW 2 ending, with a lot of aircraft that were used in Tora, Tora, Tora movie. Fifi, the B-29 was also there. The plane and pilot left on a Sunday afternoon and remember how the plane wobbled in the air as the pilot was pumping the handle which would bring up the landing gear.
