Experience over the years has taught me that the best way to build a solid foundation in a new creative skill is to do and make - as someone barely beginning in videography/film, for me that might look like concentrating on making 100 short films of 1-2 minutes and learn from that experience before worrying about the latest and greatest gear. But I confess that I had to remind myself of that after having fallen deep down the rabbit hole of youtube videos of gear reviews, log this and lut that etc etc. for weeks and weeks. So I very much appreciated this video. Thank you for being here and sharing your deeply rooted perspectives.
Wow. What an amazing comparison video. FX30 all the way only Super 35 for film. The first scene on the computer blew me away. FX30 with a cine T0.5 is an awesome combo for night shooting as well no noise.
You are sooooo right - these are all great cameras - and all can do everything that a storyteller needs. Lighting/framing/composition/lenses/editing/color grading will all make much more of a difference than switching between these (and honestly any of the other many incredible cameras that are out there at relatively reasonable price points nowadays!) Honestly I think the main reason why some feel they 'have' to get a Red or an Alexa is more to impress a client rather than an actual difference in image quality (though the super high end cameras - the Alexas and Venice's probably make sense on big sets where the ecosystem is already setup for their workflow...)
I agree all you said. From the viewer's point of view, nobody can tell the differences between the three SONYs. I use FX6, but sometimes I use FX3 because a small body size helps me in a particular situation. They all produce distinctive colors and images I love. With that said, I use SONY and Sigma wide-angle cinema lenses. They were expensive, but they were worth it for my work. Love SONY.
the ground angle clip of you walking away at 2:38 was so visually satisfying. also the clip of you powering on the headphones. was relieved to see these were shot with fx30. I just got one a week ago and RUclips had me terrified that I invested in the wrong camera lol.

Great comparison! I've got an FX3 now and also use Phantom Neutral. I'm considering adding an FX30 due to lower price and this just confirms that the footage will work fine together. Also, regarding the reds in the Neutral LUT. I noticed the same thing with mine. I created a custom SLOG3 profile and turned down Red and Magenta to -5 in Color Depth. That seems to take the edge off.
this video was immensely helpful. I currently own an FX3, and I’m trying to decide whether to get another FX3, and FX 30, or bite the bullet, and get the FX6 as my new A cam. As much as I would love the internal NDs of the FX6 I’m probably going to hold off until I have more business to justify that and purchase an FX30 as my B cam for the time being.

Before the v2.0 update i could tell the color difference between fx3 and fx3,but now they seem very close.Maybe adding a 709 image comparison?Only color transformation instead of Phantom LUT.
A few weeks ago I sold my a9 and my a7siii and I had two options, get one FX6 or get an FX3 and FX30 combo. I LOVE the FX6 but I had to go with the FX3 & FX30 combo because I found a used (excellent condition) FX3 for $2700 and then I bought the fx30 new. So I spent almost $1000 less than if I would have gone with the fx6. At first I was unsure if I made the right decision but after seeing your vid I feel confident the fx3 and fx30 are perfectly capable
I think if the FX30 had a 12MP for low light...kind of like what Panasonic did with the GH5s...nobody would ever buy an FX3 again....I believe the main difference is the low light. I have done 150 hours of shooting this summer and only once did I wish I had the FX3....other than that my FX30 did the job... so instead of 1 FX3...I have 2 FX30s and a nice 70-180 F2.8 lens...😁
I have the A7IV, and FX30 and I think it’s such a sick combo, need night shots for less lit scenes? A4, anything else? FX30. This makes me feel better about not paying double for the FX3. Also what lens do you recommend for the FX30? I have the 24GM 1.4, 16-35 F4, Zeis, and an 85 1.8 Viltrox, would I need another wider lens?
Bet that works really well man, I’ve never used the A4 but have heard really good things. I mainly use the 24mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2 and 10-20 f4 (this last one is awesome for those really wide shots).
and you can just use CST in resolve, etc, to get w/e color science u want, rly... i love my fx3 so much but i'm so hoping w the next gen they give us a cam w both internal ND and IBIS... that's all i want in a life partner. i'll marry it thx for the vid!
I think you should have compared with sonys standard slog 3 lut on all three, this leaves the possibility the different luts are responsible for the differences.
If you were to buy a camera today for documentary/ vlog content, what camera would you choose, fx3, fuji H26, canon 6 mark ii, or any other suggestions? I also occasionally take pictures of great content.
Knee jerk answer would be fx3. Outside of video I’ve taken photos with it as well and it still takes fantastic shots. I’m just now dipping my toes into the Fuji world, I’d probably go there next (especially for photo, love the stills from Fuji)

This comparison is ok for color, but a proper comparison would be the exact same shots, back to back, and then low light comparison. Its almost misleading when you compare the cameras like this because it does not show the true advantages and disadvantages of the camera's image quality, and therefore how different they are in actual shooting scenarios

It's awesome how a $1800 FX30 gets you 90%+ of an FX6 image. Gotta love the Sony eco-system.

do all have automatic anamorphic unsqueeze in the viewfinder? this is the main thing for Netflix compatibility.
They all will soon, new firmware is coming for the FX6 to have desqueeze, fx3 and 30 have it.

What about shooting in a sunny day with out viewfinder, can u see the image?

Not much difference between 3 and 30 BUT there is a clear image difference when it come to the 6.

What made it obvious for me, was the shadow fall off.
