Amazing video with some amazing sound! Super cool how you guys immediately started your takeoff roll when the previous MD-88 was still just climbing off the runway, must be because ATL is the busiest airport on the planet.
Awesome. I flew on N927DA from Memphis to Boston in 2010 back when MEM had mainline service to BOS. I didn't realize until I looked the registration up it was the plane involved in the Pensacola incident.
That’s the same runway I took off on yesterday! Flew two MD-88s (I got video of them too!). Love the steep climbs. Nothing beats the Mad Dog today that’s for sure!
AMAZING at how quickly this airplane picks up speed and takes off at a steep angle of attack! AWESOME! I thoroughly enjoyed this clip, as I LOVE flying! I flew into this airport already!
I just flew in to Hartsfield on an MD-90 and out on an MD-88. I'll say that the climb in the 90 was steeper out of West Palm but both climb like mad. MD88 pilots only ran 1 engine up, I forgot those JT8's are thirsty.. I didn't know about the engine failure in this plane, that is terrible. Delta is sure getting a lot of use out of all those MD-88's and 90s. The ones we flew last week were all updated with new leather seats that were very comfortable. Hell of a lot nicer than those awful flat seats in the A320 from Jet Blue.
taxiing feels like going slowly up the hill on a roller coaster. if youre not totally used to it...its the exact same sensation. especially when you watch another plane in front of you shoot away
I hear two people died on this one in 1996! Rest in peace Delta Air Lines Flight 1288 was a regularly scheduled flight from Pensacola, Florida to Atlanta, Georgia. On July 6, 1996, the aircraft serving the flight, registered as N927DA, a McDonnell Douglas MD-88 equipped with Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 turbofan engines, was on takeoff roll from Runway 17 at Pensacola when it experienced an uncontained, catastrophic turbine engine failure that caused debris from the front compressor hub of the number one left engine to penetrate the left aft fuselage. The impact left two passengers dead and two severely injured; the two dead were a mother and son. The pilot aborted takeoff and the airplane stopped on the runway. Three other passengers sustained minor injuries during the emergency evacuation. Most of the passengers were traveling on vacation.
good song for this, if you start it just before he makes the final turn onto the runway, "feel the beat" by darude! at least if your an aviation fanatic like i am.
by passenger traffic ATL is the biggest airport, i wasn't talking about land area. Thank you, and no the fatalities were sitting in row 37, i was in 31
@hockeyman1119 ATL isnt the largest airport it is in aircraft movements. top 3 biggest (land size are 1.Riyahd 2.denver 3. DFW. nice vid did people in the accident die on your seat row?
No specific noise abatement procedure off RNY 26L, or any other runway for that matter. Looks like the standard RNAV departure and a very light load of pax and gas. Gonna miss the -80s when they go...they r some damn sexy lookin' birds! The folks over at Airbus should take some notes on how to design a "good looking" plane, ya know?!
actually King Fahd International Airport, Saudi Arabia is 780 square kilometers or 301 square miles so Beijing could not be the largest how large is Beijing and Same Saudi Arabia beat Denver by a long run.
I also remember on the DC-9s, they didn’t have engine synch. Had a funny oscillation sometimes lol. Miss it so much! I grew up on DC-9s....of course the MD-88 is still a DC-9 (DC-9-88). Ugh I wish Boeing never bought McDonnell Douglas 🤦🏻♂️
Oh okay sounds like fun I flew the md-88 from Orlando to New York LaGuardia airport and plane didn't shake at all as long as you're not flying on a Airbus cause them suckers do shake
Amazing video with some amazing sound! Super cool how you guys immediately started your takeoff roll when the previous MD-88 was still just climbing off the runway, must be because ATL is the busiest airport on the planet.
9:24 skip to takeoff
Wdym people only watch the video for the taxi
cheer mate
What a nice tone those JT8D engines have.
fernando13e Indeed they do.
Newer airliners' jet sound is so dull and uninteresting, also too quiet.
Exactly. I mean compare the sound of this one to the GEs in the 787, those sound like utter shit compared to the JTs
Who doesn't really?
MAN that was a *fast* climb!
*FLY DELTA JETS*
'Nuff said.
ATL is the best airport ever. I have been to it twice and its An amazing airport!
Jack Finn Yeah the International Terminal is really nice.
It is nice but I'm personally a Chicago O'hare fan
Rees Mayhew With it's 3 hour TSA lines?
What a beautiful sound of the engines. 😊
9:38 mr Bean’s hair clipper *intensifies*
XD long live the McDonald Douglas MD’s!!!
that engine sound like a truck lol I love the M.D.88 .that runaway you took of from looks like a hill.very nice video.

Impressive departure!
Today is the 25th anniversary of Flight 1288

Those engines sound amazing at spool up! Thanks for the vid!
thank you!

Oh man I really miss these MD-80's :/
Sounds like my lawn-mower :P
Now that was some stunning, and shiny, taxi and takeoff footage. Exceptional quality
definitely subscribing
i live in pensacola where this happend ive flown this same plane before and my dad has also worked on it before
I hear two people died on this one in 1996! Rest in peace

Apparently it was a mother and son too, which is just very sad to hear...
wicked vid was it hard to know 2 ppl died on that AC
5 stars, love the sound!
Incredible video! I mean no offense at all but I would have enjoyed more flight time instead of over 9 min taxi time. I did enjoy it tho!
More than half of the video is the taxi? Should name it... Taxi (long) , Take Off (later).
This plane sounds a lot better than the MD-82 and MD-83.
Same engines????
The fact this video was uploaded on the 17th anniversary of the engine failure.
Nice video. Nice Engine Sound.
Very cool. Great engine sound.
Rest in peace MD-88 (Mad Dog)✈️
Was this an empty aircraft?!
I'm guessing that was a fully loaded plane, given the amount of thrust the pilot needed just to get the plane moving from a standstill.
Sad that they’re all gone now :(
I hope you had a safe flight!
I love a throttle-happy pilot!
good song for this, if you start it just before he makes the final turn onto the runway, "feel the beat" by darude! at least if your an aviation fanatic like i am.
amazing sound
Unfortunately, this exact plane N927DA was retired just last month to San Bernardino.
Cant wait to fly Delta MD888 CLE-ATL! Awesome video! love the wing of the Mad Dog!
by passenger traffic ATL is the biggest airport, i wasn't talking about land area. Thank you, and no the fatalities were sitting in row 37, i was in 31
A woman and her son were killed when the number 1 engine exploded on 927DA
Very sad
full throttle!
I mean MD-80s are designed to not use a lot of the runway and sort of rocket out, it might not be either lol
No ATL is the largest airport, i cant argue the noise procedure because that was one hell of a step takeoff
@hockeyman1119 ATL isnt the largest airport it is in aircraft movements. top 3 biggest (land size are 1.Riyahd 2.denver 3. DFW. nice vid did people in the accident die on your seat row?
How was the g-forces on takeoff? The md80s have a pretty powerful climb!
HOLY CLIMB
I'm flying this same exact plane out of this same exact airport next week... Cool!
Why would there be a Noise abatement procedure at the worlds largest airport
I like that buzzing sound they make! I liked sitting by the engines.
I never knew Silver flew to KATL lol. Nice vid!
Didn't waste anytime getting up. Nice video!
No specific noise abatement procedure off RNY 26L, or any other runway for that matter. Looks like the standard RNAV departure and a very light load of pax and gas. Gonna miss the -80s when they go...they r some damn sexy lookin' birds!

The A320 and A350 are nice looking planes. The other Airbuses not so much... I far prefer the MD-80 and A320 to the 737.
We rocketed out of ATL! it was awesome, thanks for the comment!
Didn't know JT8D's were still in use!
Thanks! I use a Sony HDR CX220 HD Handycam
Yes we sure blasted out of ATL! Thanks for the comment!
Wow! Amazing sound byte.
Awesome!! Looks like pilot started his takeoff roll before other plane even rotated!! Great video...quick takeoff too!!
Yes ATL is the biggest airport. I'm not sure if biggest in the world but Ik it's the biggest in the U.S.
***** Steven Oravitz its actually Chicago O'Hare for the largest, Atlanta holds the record and is still the busiest airport.
Ur wrong. Den is the biggest by area, 56 sq. mi. ATL is busiest in terms of traffic
actually King Fahd International Airport, Saudi Arabia is 780 square kilometers or 301 square miles so Beijing could not be the largest how large is Beijing and Same Saudi Arabia beat Denver by a long run.
Two years later and ATL is still the busiest
Thanks for the video-- sure do miss this aircraft.
Beautiful NADP procedure
That is one loud cabin and they are just at a slow taxi. I hope the PAX are offered hearing protection?
It ant as loud as it sounds
I always make sure i get one
I always enjoy flying thru ATL
Yep, great sound indeed!
Love the mad dog!
thanks jack!
thank you
Thank you!!
I see this everyday
Awesome
Thanks!
Nice sound, but it doesn't beat the original DC 9. Pratt & Whitney made several versions of its JT8D engines, with slight variations among them.
I actually like is version a little better. It makes a richer sound. You can't beat the roar the older ones make on the outside though.
No time to delay!
Power full plane
Ssteeeep climb
Love the video!
Glorious sounds
Awsome1
Sweet!!!
10:7
I'm flying from IAH to Atlanta on one of these Monday. I hope I have the same experience!
Which experience? The engine blowing up or the ride in general? lol
Which experience? The engine blowing up or the ride in general? lo
***** You must did not read the video caption. Or I responded to the wrong person hoping to get the same experience statement
Nice vid
What seat row was this one?
Rick Rivera looks like 31A
I am going on an MD-88 in 2 weeks
I am going on an MD-83 in 8 days
I was on the MD-83 today lol.
I might fly an MD-88 next year.
What seat it is?
Manuel Alejandro KATL, Hartsfield Jackson Intl, Atlanta, Georgia.
I think it’s 31A
What row are you in? I will be flying on a MD-88 here soon.
From experience you'll love the plane it was so smooth
Hope so this will be my fiance's first time flying and she was terrified when I showed her this video lol
Where flying to don't mind if I ask
From Louisville KY to Atlanta Ga to Miami fl all on MD-88s
Oh okay sounds like fun I flew the md-88 from Orlando to New York LaGuardia airport and plane didn't shake at all as long as you're not flying on a Airbus cause them suckers do shake
the MD 88 planes haul ass
Heh, true! On FlightAware, I was tracking a flight this plane served. It was traveling at FL340 at over 490 miles an hour!
2:00 must have had to burn a little fuel
It's like being at a stop light but the road is at a slight angle and you put some rpm's on the engine to keep the car from rolling back.
+jake blan that's what brakes are for.
thats not good for the trans either. or the clutch in a manual
