That may be the most under appreciated scene in their relationship. Sure, Crossroads was interesting, but Zuko realizing that she could be just as cruel as Azula shows how much he respects her for her strength and reservation.
Katara’s waterbending skills growth from episode 1 to The Southern Raiders is honestly one of the most amazing development of a character’s ability I’ve seen in a while in a TV show.

"She lied to you. She was protecting the last Waterbender" "What? Who?" "ME!" The Southern Raiders was one of my favourite episodes, it being the final part of Katara's (non Ang related) story arc. When she held the rain, I held my breath.
Other great bits from that episode are how Zuko looks at Katara, both when she bloodbends and later stops the rain. Both times it's amazement and surprise at her power, and maybe a little fear mixed in too at witnessing her bloodbend.
My favourite Katara moment is in the Desert episode, when everyone else is either hopeless, tripping, or exhausted, her will was literally the only thing that got them out of that situation. That moment showed me just how strong she was and later when she pulls Ang down from the air in his Avatar state with just the most defeated look on her face but with no fear... Man I love Katara she really is a boss.
Neither Aang nor Katara are reduced to being each other's love interest. The love story was just something that bubbled up among everything else. The show would be just as powerful without it.
I like how Kataras skills grew over the course of book one. She really seemed to get better from episode to episode and was gradually more and more included in fighting. And she managed that without having a teacher, just from practicing and learning together with Aang. It's really inspiring
Remember: she went from novice to master in the span of a year! One year! And with one year of training she was able to defeat a firebending progidy, enhanced by Sozin's comet, who had training from the best masters her entire life! If that isn't an accomplishment I don't know what is.
@Jang-geum Seo She defeated Azula twice one on one. You could claim that Azula was a little tired after fighting Zuko in the Agni Kai but in Ba Sing Se Katara wiped the floor with her.
It's more bad writing than a accomplishment. It's unrealistic for her to be master level in under a year while other characters trained there whole lives.
@@TheKenganKing People do amazing things in war. It's not bad writing that rolling around with the most powerful bender in the world fighting other extremely power benders that Katara gained the skills necessary to survive. I also believe the theory that Aang getting trapped in ice messed up the avatar cycle and if he had lived his life how he should have, Katara would have been the next avatar.
@@racxius3756 Rolling around with great benders would make her better however i'm sure all the other masters had their share of fights aswell. On top of that the war has been going on for 100 years. If war made her better why not all the other benders? They wanted to show progression of her character but when they only gave one year to be a master they wrote themselves into a corner. People do great things under pressure all the time but in any martial art it takes decades to be a master. All the other masters trained for decades so katara reaching their level in a year is bad writing.
Unfortunately, this strong fanbase makes it hard for people to move on. The Dragon Prince is a great show made by one of the creators of ATLA, yet people still don't watch it because they are still so attached to ATLA.

Mahati Kapuganti first of all, I said only water benders,Not avatars. At the end of the series she is by far stronger then any of the ppl you listed, and not to mention we only saw her as a teen and an elder. Imagine her in her prime, she would 100% be the strongest waterbender.
She is kinda forced tho They are in the middle of a century war and she is the only known waterbender in the entire southern hemisphere that can teach the avatar She NEEDS to be a strong woman
Guilherme Fernandes Dias Canalli I think the OG comment means the writing doesn’t stink of Katara being a contrived Mary Sue or pc “Strong Female Character”, she’s just a real person with strength and other admirable characteristics
Guilherme Fernandes Dias Canalli Thats not the same as slicing a rock in two and becoming a master katara actually struggled its almost as if she had character growth hmmm.
I absolutely ADORE Katara's fire nation disguise!! I don't know why, but I always go back to those episodes just for it. She was designed sooo well!! (I really wish she had it on for longer, but her water tribe outfit wasn't too bad.... - Gotta love the hair tho)
*Aang:* _Learns basic water moves immediately_ *Katara:* "Wow, you picked that up really fast. It took me months to learn that move." *Hama:* "Bloodbending. It took me years to develop the technique." *Katara:* _Learns Bloodbending instantly_
i think its because hama taught herself and only had one opportunity every month or so and katara had the full moon, a teacher, the ability to bend invisible water, and her friends depended on her.
@@Kikkerv11 that's why hama sat in prison for a long time before being able to bloodbend right? That's why in the invasion of the northern watertribe, not a single waterbender was bloodbending right? Bloodbending is a feat just like any other sub-bending class.
I would love to see Zuko's progression in firebending , because they don't really mention it , but he evolves so much , to the point of doing massive fireballs when taking on Aang and Katara, plus his techinque get's really refined , to the point of even tought he might have less fire power then Azula ( Im not really sure ) he takes a clear advantage at their fight , is such shame they nerfed him Heavelly in Korra.
It could be because they grew more confident in the series. Nor the voice actors but the characters. A child can grow slowly but when under preasure, they can grow fast mentaly.
Katara as always and still is my favorite character. Even in "Legends of Korra"' She was a very powerful and skilled bender. She was never to weak or whiny. She was emotional and honest. She looked after her brother despite being younger, and wouldn't stand for sexism. Which I found it funny when she flat out called Sokka sexist. You wouldn't ever hear that in a kids show. "Avatar the last air bender", was and is different from all the other kids shows. Going to lengths that you didn't see in a lot of shows targeted for children. However, I think that's the charm of ATLA. Katara and her bending came a long way between season one of ATLA, to the first season of LOK.
yes my favorite character too! generous, brave, trustworthy. "i will never ever turn my back on people who need me" is my fav quote of the series and it's from her.
I'm just gonna say that even if azula wasn't in her right frame of mind she was still very powerful and KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING, but katara still beat her
Nah. Yes indeed Katara might still win. But y'all don't think. Why is azula.such a problem...... it's not her bending....it's her mind. Her pure strategies , tactics and tricks......which is why even Zuko was able to have the upper hand against her.
@@clonnlijinhlong2713 The thing is Katara’s emotional control gives her an edge over Azula regardless. Yes, Azula’s way more strategic than Katara. But Katara’s way more resourceful, in control of her emotions, and thinks faster on her feet than Azula.
@@jungsoojung4730 I would describe Katara as in tune with her emotions, not in control of them. Azula has been training in combat her entire life, Katara didn't learn water bending just to fight. I do think Katara is a better bender, but Azula's mind for combat and precision bending makes it a tough ask on comet day. She did kinda beat her at her best in Ba Sing Sei though.
I can't believe it has been so many years Avatar. I grew up watching this series. Katara is the best water bender ever and personally blue colour suits her.
The video was posted 4 days ago and already has 1,1 million views. - I'm glad that the Avatar community still remains alive. **tear bending** Greetings from Brazil, love this show
I'm pretty sure it's not ice cuz all the ice in the show up until that point is like full solid and white but with azula it's like slightly transparent and has little air bubbles in it. But I do agree with you on the zuko similarity
@@Deliverance253 That was all snow my dude. The northern water tribe is 90% snow, what was shown there was ice, but they put emphasis on it so they could see the characters inside said ice.
We can see that all team Avatar like to use another Bender style (except toph coz she cant see it) Like the Agni kai between zuko and azula , how zuko use airbender earthbender and ultimately waterbender( lightning direction) style And katara using earthbender stand against hama
Its because instead of making her immeaditly physically strong, they made her emotional and personal growth strong first. Strong female character shouldn't = can hit hard, they also need to be written well and given personalities
I'm currently re-watching the series and I think Katara's progression as a waterbender is honestly more impressive than aang's journey to master the elements. Since aang had mastered the elements thousands of times in past lives, he was able to pick up each one relatively easily (not that it was easy). But that the seires takes place over the course of maybe 8 months just makes Katara's progression that much more impressive for me.
She almost killed a master 😂. She's probably the strongest water in the series even against yakone's family in her prime. She may not be able to duel them with bloodbending but we can know she can nullify the effects. Her combat style is unlike any other water bender. She's fast like fire bender, immovable like earth, but is filled with compassion like air.
I think she could win them easily bc it's clearly stated that blood bending works only on people that have a weaker bending than the user (katara's being immune against hama's blood bending, Amon immune against Tarloq's, Aang entering the avatar state to become stronger than Yakone's) so yeah she could win against them.
@@MasterRoshi69 writers should seriously study Avatar on college; not only the show have stroong characters, worldbuilding and magic system, but also great plot progression, characters development and is capable to handle complex moral issues related to war to their children audience without a problem. Still can't get over how Katara managed to beat a firebending prodigy during Sozin's comet. No full moon, no bloodbending, just raw waterbending at a disadvantage yet still coming out on top.
@@Ronin.Samurai yeah totally, or katara could use her octopus stance or water arms to shove azula in the ground, bro get over it, katara and toph dominate over azula
I like to believe the character growth/development went like this: Aang changed his discipline Katara changed her skill Sokka changed his viewpoint Zuko changed his alignment Toph changed her openness Of course, there's more to it then that, but that's the gest of it. Aang changed from being without a care in the world to being fully responsible and taking action. Katara changed from lacking in her skill being able to manipulate some fish in bubbles to controlling the very rain around her. Sokka changed his viewpoint on the Fire Nation citizens and women with his insecurities to now being fully confident in himself and other's. Zuko changed from seeking the Avatar for honour and betraying his own Uncle who cared more for him than his father, to finding the true meaning of firebending as life and helping the Avatar bring an end to his own father's reign. Toph was closed off from other's at first, but then when she opened up to the rest, she in a way discovered a way to bend what was thought to be impossible, metal.
When it's put into these terms, each character had to learn their opposing nature. When Aang learns earth bending, we discover each element has it's natural opposite (in this case, air and earth). Each character grew because they learned the most difficult lessons for their element's "opposite". Air benders value freedom and spontaneity. Aang struggled the most with duty and feeling bound to a destiny. For Zuko, fire benders are known for their passion and sometimes anger. He not only had to face that his values (i.e. passion) were wrong, but he was able to recognize they were wrong and adjust his path in a rational way. The same parallels can be said about the other characters. Maybe the greatest thing the avatar taught us is that we need to find balance in ourselves and embrace the things that are most difficult for us. Idk, just a thought. 😉
The relationship she had with Korra was one of the things I liked the most in the legend of Korra. To see Katara in her old days and being a wise woman confronting a rebel teenager was a whole cicle of taking me back to Katara in her teenage years not being able to control her emotions
I loved this show growing up. Being the only daughter out of 4 brothers in my family, I could always relate to katara wanting to prove everyone wrong that she is powerful- despite the fact that she was viewed as a docile female.
Kataras one of the best characters in the whole Avatar universe and my favourite. She became a master so quickly because she learned all she could with great ambition , skill and determination. Since she couldn't get a teacher or even see any other benders in her tribe before Aang.
Wow, I...actually wasn't expecting this. I was just expecting a montage of things the character did like most channels do, but you gave us an analysis of both character and water bending development. You even talked about how Katara affected others.
Ya'll lying if you say you DIDN'T have a crush on Katara when you were younger. But all jokes aside I'm glad I got to watch this as a kid such an amazing show! :)
Also can we Suki’s mastery progression as a character and warrior, because we all miss her since she is the only member of the original Team Avatar to be taken for granted these days? (Edited two times).
I think the only other bender that has similar progress like Katara, is Zuko. As much as I prefer Azula or Toph more as bending combatants, I think I'd like to see Zuko being breakdown like Katara.
I think she counts as a prodigy, even if some people aren't willing to admit it. Sure, her skills at the first episodes weren't anything special, but that's only because she had to learn them herself. But when she finally got a reference (the waterbending scroll), she was able to learn well and we saw the rapid improvement in her skills (e.g. being unable to create a wave in "The Waterbending Scroll" and then easily doing that in "Bato of the Water Tribe"). Once she got a master, I assume it only took her a few days to be in the level she was in at Book 1's season finale. And she only got better from there. She even learned bloodbending just a few minutes after the concept was introduced to her. If she really wanted to stay on that bloodbending path, she probably could've bypassed the full moon restriction earlier than Amon's family.
Katara is interesting because she's a prodigy at learning. Unlike Toph, Azula, Iroh, and Hama she never creates a new technique, but she learns them extremely fast and can take skills beyond the level her teachers did. This explains why in a year she came so far when her entire life pre-Aang only allowed her basic control, and why she literally leaps to Zuko level after meeting Paaku.
System3rror In this world they are counterparts, so they are technically equal, i mean fire extinguish water and vice versa. Furthermore, if we count water as superior, Azula's flame, because of its colour, is hotter than regular flames, so she should easily evaporate Katara's water. Katara, in my opinion, has more difficulties in their battles.
@@SignIn-bt6pe This isn't Pokemon lol, if so electricity > water. All bending techniques are equal (maybe except bloodbending, it's definitely overpowered compared to the rest)
I think that it said in the show that Ozai was stronger power wise then Iroh. Iroh just was smarter, much more of a strategist. Learning from enemy’s and find they’re weak spots. Then attacking. There were much stronger firebenders even in the white lotus.
Abearlsu Iroh knew the true power of firebending, as it is mentioned that he learned from the original masters; he learned that firebending doesn’t come from rage, but from passion and through precision.
Including TLOK, I think Zaheer is a better Airbender, Gazaan or maybe Bolin are better earthbenders, Amon is a better water bender, and Ozai is a better fire bender. (Never actually watched the show, I just saw quite a lot of clips, and the only firebender I know from TLOK is Mako)
She was truly the best waterbender and still is for now the best. She thought herself, she learned plantbending in seconds ? And same for bloodbending ! She was truly amazing. Plus her healing skills.
@@nikhilkrishnan9591 Amon is impressive with his chi blocking ability and bloodbending. But I still consider Katara a way better water bender in general. The thing about Katara is that she, like everyone else in Team Avatar, trains like crazy pretty much every day. That and being taught by Pakku for a couple weeks put her miles ahead of her peers. It's pretty ingenious: As she teaches Aang, she perfects her own techniques through repetition.
It’s one of those “unlocking your lost childhood memories” shows for me. I never followed it when it released but I remember watching it every now and then a few times scrolling through channels
All of the characters in this show were fleshed out soo well. The writers of Game of Thrones should have taken a page out of their book when they ran out of GRRM source material.

Other great bits from that episode are how Zuko looks at Katara, both when she bloodbends and later stops the rain. Both times it's amazement and surprise at her power, and maybe a little fear mixed in too at witnessing her bloodbend.

@Jang-geum Seo She defeated Azula twice one on one. You could claim that Azula was a little tired after fighting Zuko in the Agni Kai but in Ba Sing Se Katara wiped the floor with her.
Because she lived in the war times, she was "forced" to learn some massive water bending skills to survive. Still, she is the best waterbender ever.
@@racxius3756 Rolling around with great benders would make her better however i'm sure all the other masters had their share of fights aswell. On top of that the war has been going on for 100 years. i think its because hama taught herself and only had one opportunity every month or so and katara had the full moon, a teacher, the ability to bend invisible water, and her friends depended on her.
@@Kikkerv11 that's why hama sat in prison for a long time before being able to bloodbend right? That's why in the invasion of the northern watertribe, not a single waterbender was bloodbending right? Bloodbending is a feat just like any other sub-bending class.

Probably because they grew into the roles over time and got better/directional changes
Especially Aang's
It could be because they grew more confident in the series. Nor the voice actors but the characters. A child can grow slowly but when under preasure, they can grow fast mentaly.
In aang's case I think it's because his va got older, he was still a kid back then
How could we not notice?

Also the comet upgraded her firebending so she's a lot stronger then when they were fighting in the cave
And katara didint even blood bended her
Nah. Yes indeed Katara might still win. But y'all don't think.

Since aang had mastered the elements thousands of times in past lives, he was able to pick up each one relatively easily (not that it was easy). But that the seires takes place over the course of maybe 8 months just makes Katara's progression that much more impressive for me.

She may not be able to duel them with bloodbending but we can know she can nullify the effects. Her combat style is unlike any other water bender. She's fast like fire bender, immovable like earth, but is filled with compassion like air.
This is so true
I think she could win them easily bc it's clearly stated that blood bending works only on people that have a weaker bending than the user (katara's being immune against hama's blood bending, Amon immune against Tarloq's, Aang entering the avatar state to become stronger than Yakone's) so yeah she could win against them.

watching her skills grow was such a beautiful part of this show. it’s really impressive what she was able to do in about a year of training
I like to believe the character growth/development went like this:
Aang changed his discipline
Katara changed her skill
Sokka changed his viewpoint
Zuko changed his alignment
Toph changed her openness
Of course, there's more to it then that, but that's the gest of it.
A medal to commemorate your willingness to create this entire comment 🏅
This deserves 1000 likes easy
Also, Aang got the love of his life. Kataang is probably one of my favorite developments over the show.

@@BrunoHenrique-uz1vd that azula wasn't in the best state of mind,

And she's sent multiple ships flying with water, she has more raw power and skill, amon mainly focuses on the bloodbending aspect which is impressive but if she were to actually train even more with bloodbending I have no doubt she'd even surpass amon in bloodbending.
@@JaredL-nf4lf you know, I must have missed Amon chi blocking. When did he do it because I recall reading about it from a wiki page so I know it's a thing he can do. I just don't recall him using it ever, or was it mentioned?
@@paraplegicleopardman the equalists in general chi block, so its probably assumed that amon can
He can use waterbending to take someone's bending away, which is impressive considering Aang had to learn energy bending from a lion turtle
katara: The last southern water bender
Why did you always say “Team Avatar” instead of the much cooler “Boomer-Aang”?
The Aang Gaang
Fearsome foursome 🤪
okay boomer.... I'm not sorry. couldnt resist
@@coqui9879 This is my favourite thing
I- I didn't notice that- BoomerAang-
Kataras anger was the start to the whole series
No sokka being the annoying older brother (I put little)
@@bleachedspidermonkey2316 Sokka is older.
@@bleachedspidermonkey2316 no without kataras waterbending there wouldn’t be a avatar to save the world purr
@@sw9618 omg out little
@@KanChiateyallsfavsup without sokka she would probably never hit the ice
Katara learned us that being emotional doesnt make you weak, it makes you strong
*Teach us
Harnessing your emotions and not letting them get the better of you, you mean.
The thing about Katara is that she, like everyone else in Team Avatar, trains like crazy pretty much every day. That and being taught by Pakku for a couple weeks put her miles ahead of her peers. It's pretty ingenious: As she teaches Aang, she perfects her own techniques through repetition.
Can’t believe people are just now starting to watch this show
I watched it when I was younger and watched it again because I forgot everything.
wait really? I have been rewatching it but, I watched them as they came out on disc xd
Well that’s because it was so difficult to re watch
It’s one of those “unlocking your lost childhood memories” shows for me. I never followed it when it released but I remember watching it every now and then a few times scrolling through channels
I had a crazy grandmother and no tv
She was the glue of Team Avatar and always in the darkest times kept them together!!!🌊👍👍😃😃😃
That moment when Katara screamed “ME” in the episode of finding the truth about her mother, i got spooks all over 🥺
That episode always gives me goosebumps. It's one of my favorites :)
the southern raiders is a masterpiece!
12:37 zuko's inoocent face
So cute!!!
All of the characters in this show were fleshed out soo well. The writers of Game of Thrones should have taken a page out of their book when they ran out of GRRM source material.
The winter... is coming
The connection they made between Katara's first and final waterbending move was mind blowing.
The progression of this show just in its entirety is incredible
9:23 I'm disappointed that you missed the tidal wave she forms knocking out the many Dai Lee agents on her way to rescue Aang. That's always been one of my favorite scenes in the show.
