      Grand highlander is so much better, sequoia seems to be a letdown with a failing 3rd row. if I'm getting a suv its going to be for hauling the kids or things, if I wanted a suv suitable for off-roading I'd pick a pickup and you can also haul larger items. Fit and finish seem to be way nicer on the GH than the sequoia.

Aesthetically i prefer the Sequoia, Practically, the Grand Hoghlander makes more overall sense.....Unless the plan was to Kill the sales of the Sequoia, to then end the model all together, and blame it on sales??

    I actually like how the grand highlander looks more than the sequoia, which I didn’t expect. The grand highlander is so much more practical, too. The sequoia is too much of a compromise vehicle. It’s not a true off-roader, so it really only stands apart due to its towing capability.

    Grand Highlander has some massive advantages to the Sequoia. For starters, the terrible interior packaging of the 3rd gen Sequoia, thanks to the solid rear axle (I won't entirely blame the hybrid battery for that one). The Grand Highlander pulls off interior packaging even better than my 2nd gen Sequoia, which did have IRS. The other big one is the 3rd gen Sequoia's 4wd no longer has a Torsen diff. My 2nd gen's 4hi basically served as AWD mode for me. This new one is only good for absolutely horrible conditions and.. off roading? No suburbanite will be using it. If the GH could tow a little more I think it'd be the Toyota for me

    I personally don't think this will really hurt Sequoia sales. The Sequoia wasn't really going to sell in Tahoe numbers in the first place. I think the Grand Highlander will throat punch the Honda Pilot thanks to increased cargo space and unbelievable power for the class in Max trim. It's really a more spacious Mazda CX-90 competitor that's trading luxury for space, which makes sense. The Sequoia still appeals to people like Mrs. JAX who wants a new, large truckish SUV but doesn't car as much about space since the kids are older (and one can drive). I'm going to drop a hot take here, Jon. Let me know what you think: the Grand Highlander proves that there will soon be a Lexus version to fill in the sizable gap in their lineup that the GX can't really fill. BOOM!

  • @MarketAndChurch
    @MarketAndChurch Год назад +4

    I think this will not only be a success, but will see a market reaction from competitors such as Ford and GM. For so long, if you wanted to comfortably travel with more than 5 people, you had to fork over $60k-80k for an Expedition or Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban. Now, you not only have a more comfortable car-like large SUV that seats 8, but it'll be much more affordable, eating into the market dominated by GM. This is a huge win for Toyota. I love my 22' Highlander but this is really tempting, but I'll have to restrain myself because I'm waiting for the next Tacoma.

    Thanks for the great comparison between the two. I have a 2008 Sequoia (300K miles) and have been waiting for the new Sequoia to come out as I have absolutely loved all aspects of my vehicle. The 3rd row of seating is of minimal importance to me in either vehicle. I used mine probably a handful of times over 15 years. However, what has been important, and what has come as a serious disappointment with the new Sequoia, is that rear interior flooring. The GH design is more reminiscent of my current Sequoia design, which I love, because it's completely flat. You can just about put a twin mattress in the rear of a Sequoia with both rows laying flat, which is great for roadtrips. The new Sequoia, with that ridiculous shelving and raised flooring, which doesn't hold much weight, is not going to fly. Really bummed as many other design aspects of the new Sequoia are really nice. I also love the higher seating level as compared to the GH. However, the new GH has perked my interest for my next SUV. Otherwise, I might consider departing Toyota for my next SUV, even though I would really like to stay for the reliability.
    Really wish they would redesign the Sequoia and maybe get it off that Tundra frame as that is what resulted in that terrible rear interior design. Really bad move putting the new Sequoia on the same frame as the Tundra. Also, not a fan of the captain seating, but I assume you can opt for a bench on that 2nd row. The 3-way split in my 2008 Sequoia was extremely convenient. I know on the new Sequoia, the bench split is 1+2, which is _okay_, although not ideal.

    The sequoias calling card is being more truck like, towing, and (depending on model) more off road capable. But with the third row being so useless, you can achieve the same thing with the tundra. Bonus points for the tundra is you can get the regular engine and not a hybrid (trim level depending)

      why would you not want the hybrid engine that thing ads a ton of power.

    • @gdub350
      @gdub350 Год назад +1

      @@kingofthesofas some people prefer the older tried and true technology (I get that even the twin turbo is a new engine). Some people have the “less technology less stuff to break” mentality. Just look at how many people lost their minds when Toyota did away with the v8 even though it was archaic. So there’s probably a good amount of people that would refuse a hybrid just because it’s a newer technology (also realize hybrids themselves have been around for awhile, but not near this mainstream). I myself am in the middle ground, I have a ecoboost so I’m not scared of newer tech, but I didn’t want the power boost because it’s too new. But seeing how the power boost seems to be a good power train, I wouldn’t overlook it next time

    • @kingofthesofas
      @kingofthesofas Год назад

      @@gdub350 Yeah I totally get being wary of new systems. There are some car companies that are honestly way behind on hybrid tech and the older gen 1 or gen 2 toyota hybrids had their issues for sure. That being said I do trust Toyotas deployment of the hybrid system since it is Toyota and they have been doing hybrids long enough to work out all the kinks. I can say from experience since I own one of the new Sequioas that the power on that thing is no joke, it just launches of the line because of the hybrid setup. Having the low end instant response torque of the electric motor really helps fix the issue of turbo lag. Also getting 18-20 mpg in a giant SUV is a nice bonus.

      @@kingofthesofas the new sequoia looks amazing, and I haven’t driven one but heard plenty of good things. Also haven’t heard any negatives like I have with the tundras and the turbos. The downfall seems to be that rear cargo area, which how “bad” it is is really up to each person opinions. I wish the pricing was a little bit more affordable though, but that can be said about any vehicle these days.

    I looked and only found the weight of the Prius battery. It's 118 lbs. Add in the actual motor and everything else connected to it. It's going to add up. It might be more with the Grand Highlander IDK. From what I have found, I believe it's a 700 lb difference. 400 lb ft of torque is great, but how much is it going to offset?

This Grand Highlander is the same ballpark as a Pilot, Telluride etc. This size is not that new for other companies. I am waiting to see a comparison between the new Pilot and this Grand Highlander.
