Yours has a PATS (passive anti-theft system) chip in the key, it's an extra step to get it to work. Lots of good forums on how to bypass that system. Good luck, and thanks for the funny comment!
I purchased same switch panel and was puzzled when I started the installation. I found your video and the rest is history. You are a gentleman and a scholar! Thanks!!!
This was, by far, the best electrical guide I have yet seen, pretty much for anything car related. Short and concise descriptions, perfect execution with practical test, loved it! Will use this when I purchase basically the same thing to replace my failing ignition switch on my 1990 jeep cherokee. New subscriber gained!
95 Mustang GT 5.0 owner her....THANK YOU for this!...After becoming tired of spending $$ on broken stock ignition switch problems, I decided to go fully keyless... My main obstacle is the ignition wiring module . You explained very well how to figure out what goes where with a multimeter....huge help!
Glad I can help man! Once you figure out your voltage, dont forget to disconnect your battery while you wire it up. Some of those fuses are serious $$$. People always say "Just use your multimeter", and never explain further. Most people have no idea how to use one, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't one of "those guys". Good luck man!
Sooooo what your saying is I can have multiple hot wires coming from car going into the push start module? Because I’m in the same boat as the other guy, 97 mustang and it’s a lot of continuity through the wires so I wanted to just splice them together and go like that but was scared 😂 so could I?
Quick security tip for anyone. Since this requires no key just hide a toggle switch somewhere that is on the push button start circuit. If you have a rubber shifter boot, a good place is under there.
I appreciate that man! I'm working hard. I'm going to make a plexi glass back-lit switch panel with custom writing on my CNC machine, exactly how i want it, you know? It probably won't happen for months though, lol. Tell your friends!
You seem like you might have the same problem I do... Too many projects and not enough time. You should just use one of those label makers to label your switches until you get around to doing the CNC project. I love my label maker. That reminds me... MORE LABELS!!!
Freaking awesome dude. This is exactly what I needed. I plan on working out how to make a fingerprint scanner on an Arduino act as an all in one relay. The wiring diagrams in this video are ON POINT AND USEFUL AS HELL! THANK YOU!
Probably a bit too late to respond, but get a ESP32. It is compatible with the Arduino IDE and you can scan for BLE devices. Maybe you know for what I'm going here hehe
watched this video with my new 7.1 surround sound headphones...@ 6:40 your dog barked.... i just spent 5 minutes looking for my dog that was out in the yard cause i thought she was stuck... great video!
+Blougheed dude, if I edited out every clip where that dog barked I would never have any footage. Sammy is a maniac! Lol, that's funny though. What kind of dog do you have?
Nice post, I have one of these coming for my 89 F250 don't have the nifty horn but my ignition decided to spin all the way around the other day and instead of opening a potential can of worms by opening up the column this seemed a simpler solution. Thanks you got a new and dare I say totally strange subscriber
ramhornjoe Thanks man, welcome to my channel. That's super frustrating about your truck! Does your ignition still "work" or is it totally wrecked? Mine won't hold a tumbler anymore, so I was SOL. I'm putting another panel in my boat in the coming weeks, I haven't decided how much detail I'm going to go into, but if you come up with any questions/issues just give me a shout and I'll try to work it into my next vid. Thanks for watching!
Don't give me too much credit. The only smart thing I did was make the video, I had to do something one way or another. I'm glad you liked it, thanks for being a Stranger😎
Living in Buckley, I swear I recognize the housing style right down the hill from me... Hope to see you on the road someday! Great project, (except the plywood, of course)!
+polar bear18 doesn't hold a candle to how I got It! It was totally jacked! I had to replace front and back seats, and you still couldn't start it with the key. I'll send them a RUclips link when I sell it. That'll answer lots of questions.
Bought my switches separately and things seemed to work fine... except no signals but thanks to your video, I'm guessing I need to trace another Acc wire from under the dash. BUT: After about 10/15 min my primary power switch gets extremely hot to the touch. I'm afraid I'm going to end up with another electrical fire. Any idea why? (It's a 20A lighted metal switch from local auto parts shop)
I did the same thing to an old off road only Toyota I had. Lock cylinder was destroyed. Switch still worked and for some time I had it screwed to my dash with a key head JB welded into it so I could turn it. Worked like stock as it was the stock ignition switch. I finally ditched it in favor of switches and buttons as I added more stuff and needed more switches. I did mine DIY style as I had access to all kinds of switches and buttons. I ended up with a single master switch for all vehicle power and a key button for the engine crank. Even had a simple metal panel sitting in place of stock radio everything mounted to. Wish I still had that truck...
So glad you removed the ignition barrel, too many people install a button start and leave the ignition barrel installed meaning you have to insert the key and turn it to position 1 and then press the button which is completely pointless! Takes longer than just turning the key all the way!
Great vid! I've done some similar work in my own vehicle with air horns and lights. My one caution to your viewers is that after a bit of night driving the little red LEDs on the dash drove me nuts! I used a couple of coats of red latex paint and the wifes nail polish to dim'em down. Stay Strange bro
Yeah way too bright! My truck is really just a dump runner, so it doesn't get a lot of nighttime driving, fortunately. Thanks for watching bro! Glad to have another Stranger.
i have the exact same problem with my 2002 ford mustang gt and i bought your buttons and plan to do it just like you did, any tips you could throw my way?

Good Job on the video and I agree about those wiring diagrams... got a headache right now from trying to figure them out...
The only reason for the relay is to stop the starter from spinning until the "On" switch is flipped. So no, you really don't need it. On my old truck you could hit the start button anytime and the starter would spin, but the truck wouldn't start till you flipped it to "on". Good luck man, thanks for watching!
@@StrangeGarage Thanks for the quick reply.. I'll give it a try. One other question .. I noticed when you cut the connector off and determined the connections between them to wire-nut them together under the dash... I understand the two you 'hot-wired the Push-button with... But what about the Toggle.. Can you Use those same as the constant Voltage to the Input side of the toggle or is that what the one wire that was not connected to any thing for.
Hey man i want to donthe exact same this but because my key ignition pin is broken i broke it while steering wheel was locked and now i cant start it but with a screw driver and i want to change that and this look really dope but the wireing is confueing
You got this dude. All the technical mumbo-jumbo isn't really important, just make it work, and unplug your battery before you wire stuff, otherwise you'll burn up the expensive big ass fuses that connect everything (I did that on MY metro actually when I replaced the ignition). Good luck!
Aside from keeping the truck locked, is there any kind of security for this push button start. Modern cars detect the key fob, so if it's not present the car will not start. Just wondering...
Very good description and schematic simple yet effective I've seen people really over complicate things like that. KISS principal utilized well. New subscriber now and because you remind me of a dear friend of mine I have not seen for years. Good on ya keep up the good work.
Nice work! Button has to be held down manually until it fires up. How can I modify the system to hold until it fires up after only tapping it like most late model cars?
Great question.... that would require quite a bit of work. There may be a simple way to do it, but I'm unaware of one. A holding contact would keep the button held down, the tricky part would be turning the starter off. I think it would require a PLC.
@@StrangeGarage Maybe some sort of timer circuit and a MOSFET to a relay? The starts on late model, fuel injected vehicles are very consistent. Could probably program an IC to hold for "x+1" and it would work great.
@@CORZER0 Yep, just gotta get the timing right with the proper relays or controller. But it still might not always work. Older cars can be funky sometimes.
Would this work on an 88 f150? I too replaced my steering column and I have to push the rod down to engage the power, then turn the key to unlock the wheel, then push the button to start it (previous owner installed a push button start). So yea I’m looking to bypass the ignition switch
Speaking of hotwiring. Due to a very bad starter.. for a while a vehicle that it is not cared for (nor driven) at my work had this procedure of starting: Put the contact on (and shift to neutral - manual gearbox, also the parking brake was not working too well), open the hood and there we had laying around the solenoid wire and the starter wire.. so touch the solenoid wire to + and then touch the starter wire with plus. after that release the cables and tuck them back into the makeshift insulation out of a hose. Did that like 10 times by now in the past two years. (the car does not require MOT as it is driven only on private property of the company.. big enough to actually drive. It also doesn't have plates)
That's pretty good how you explained a simple way to get it all worked out. fortunately for me My samurais key switch only has 3 or 4 wires and Mine will be way easier. I was just prepping myself for installing a switch like the one you are using. I lost the key and its hard to get the lock cylinder for a samurai without replacing a big mechanism thingy ma bob.
Gotta bypass your PATS first if you have one. There are great forums on doing this online. I know TheRangerStation has a few on it, really good info if you need to bypass yours.
Was looking at the same one from eBay. Happy I found this video 👍🏼 funny thing is I want buy it because of the switches because it’s cheaper to buy it as this set then as each one.
Iamjdmgear Seriously, couldn't believe it was cheaper to buy the set. My main motivation literally was just to have somewhere to mount my horn button. Glad I could help, thanks for watching!
Khash Bagheri I'm totally doing that next week. I need to do that on my boat already, so everybody is happy! Thanks for the input, and thanks for watching!
Strange Garage awesome! I have a 1988 Ford bronco and the fuel pump works fine along with everything related to it but it will only stay on for a minute then it will shut off. The computer isn’t doing its job and to fix it will cost a lot! I’m just going to hard wire it to a switch.
I'm just now watching a video but I was really coming first cuz I don't really like to waste my time but I went ahead of his describe hit the like button from just off the strength of the support of others and self so hopefully I'm not let down LOL
Mhmm is there a way… well there most likely is, but is there a way to have another switch installed somewhere to switch back and forth between the key and buttons?
So did you key have a chip in your key? I'm looking at a 96 mustang without key wanna do track car and will snatch if it's this simple theoretically lol
I have a question if you have a bad ignition switch that won’t start your car will this work? I’ve been trying to get answers so I can get somebody to install in on my car
My only key for my vehicle is broke, I was hoping to do this button start with mine. How do I stop the steering wheel from locking? It's from 2001 and I'm worried about it. It's nice security thing, but its complicating this for me.
Hey man I am trying to do the exact same thing on a 98 Chevy blazer I bought it off the fella he lost the keys so I tried getting the ignition out and ended up breaking the ignition housing so I just want to bypass every bit of it and put a push button start on it but right now whenever I try to start it like you did on the Ford truck so I sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t could you please give me some insight on what the hell I’m doing wrong
I have a 2000 durango and I pull the ignition because I lost the keys, I can get it to start but my gears aren’t lighting up the selected one it’s showing all gears selected
I’ve owned a car with a switch panel like this and it had a quad fan setup 2 behind the radiator and 2 in front so when ever i’m in traffic and my AC is not blowing cold air i just flick the switch and the extra fans cool the radiator thus making the Engine cooler thus making the AC a lot colder but even with this quad fan setup it still overheated...
Vcxb U That's a sweet setup. I've been lucky to have pretty damn good luck with cars lately, and it doesn't get too hot here, so no overheating. If it did get hot I would totally do what you did though!
No, my buddy just wired straight from the ignition switch wires into the push start panel. Iv been hot wiring recently cause I’m afraid it’ll possibly catch fire or something
Are you talking about mechanically or electrically? Mechanically, the guy before me just took out the key tumbler so the steering wheel wouldn't lock. Electrically, I did it all in this video. That's how I did it.
@@StrangeGarage I want it just like yours, I have the ignition cylinder out along with the upper actuator gear so it won’t lock. I would just wire that ignition switch to the ignition switch on the panel?
What kind of truck do you have? Someone gave me a great idea the other day: leave the key as is, and just splice in the starter leg, so you still turn the key to turn on the ignition, then you can use the push button to start it and do whatever you want with the rest of the switches. I would have done that if my key worked.
What I want to know is, how could I do this, but make use of the key. Like to where the key must be in the on position before the push button will work. I like the idea of having push start, and a switch for the fuel pump hidden somewhere.
Johnathon Reyes Yes, I love it. Check it: Leave the key as is. All you need to know which 2 wires go to the solenoid. You run those 2 to the push button. That's is. Those are the only wires you change. Key still turns on the ignition, but the button is what starts the engine.
Doesn't look like it's this easy for a car tho. I have a corolla 2018. Seems people need to turn a key into on first, then press the button like 3 times to start it. Is there a way to make it start with a single press? lol
I need to do this too my 02 malibi can somone please help... So first of all that switch he pulled from under that he says he uses instead of his key for now, what is that? He wired directly to is so i would assume it is an ignition switch (a backup stock ignition switch??)? Do all carshave that? I also want to know whether the start buttom is a momentary switch or an on off switch. I would assume a mometary switch because he doesn't have to turn it back off? Does mean it has to be timed perfectly just like when you normal turn the key? I would assume so..
You're just diverting the electricity from the factory switch to the switch panel. Basically copying the existing circuits and moving them. So your factory ignition switch has a contact for your starter relay, you just move those two wires to the push button. Same for the rest of your circuits. You just need to determine your continuity with a meter, exactly like I did in the video. You'll get itm
Oh, sorry, you answered that. Obviously the 2 hots are intended to power the other 4, so you can determine the specific circuits by pulling fuses and seeing which wire goes dead, then wire it up accordingly. You can use jumper wires to distribute the power from one hot to multiple switches, and my guess is one hot wire is only for the starter. Easy peesy
What I would do if I were you would keep using your key for the ignition, then wire the push button in series with the red "on" switch. That way you still have the secutiry of the key, and you dont overload the switch.
Randall Clark My dog is seriously desperate for attention. Austrailian Shepherds have a lot of energy! Glad you could benifit from the video man! Good to hear!
Thank you for the video! Nice explanation easy to understand. I want to use this switch panel for my PC since I place the PC on the wall rather than on the table.
My key works but the mechanism is broke... I wanna leave everything the same but can I add a relay? I wanna not have the button work when the ignition is off.... Replacing the mechanism requires a steering column rebuild or purchasing another... This is the third column” Purchased used and from ebay” The mechanism inside a fieros steering column is cheap pot metal.
It's an old ford. Starter wire is blue with white stripe at far left of ignition switch harness. Constant 12 v is the center wire, probably red and white(may be diff color), ignition wire is opposite of starter wire(color doesn't matter, wire position is the same in every ford.)
Is it really a good idea to have two red buttoms one for the horn and one to turn off the car, right next to eachother?! Arent you afraid to accedently turn off the car when reaching for the horn buttom?
My 97 doesnt have Anti Theft. There are dudes who can show you the process, but if I were you I would leave the key the way it is and just wire the "start" button in so the ignition still works normally.
garaiselvis That's state specific. My state does no inspection except for special circumstances. If your state does inspections, you will totally need to still have am ignition lock of some kind, but it's more of an issue with insurance than "legality".
garaiselvis Sorry about the confusion, my channel never really got attention from outside the US until recently. I am guessing that it would not pass that inspection, simply because an insurance company can't insure a vehicle without a locking ignition. You could, however, leave the key as-is, and simply wire the button to the starter solenoid. That way you still have the security and insurance, but still also still get the push button start. Sorry for being long winded.
This is a Gas F150. It's not "hard", but I'm a mechanic with a speciality in electrical controls, so it may be harder for people who don't do a lot of electrical.
Does your Vehicle have any form of protection where someone can't just push start and drive away? Besides locking the doors and hopefully nobody breaks in😂
I wired mine up after watching this video. 2005 F150 FX4. Hit the starter switch and my neighbors blender came on.... A work in progress.

It also doesn't have plates)
how did you do the accessories wiring? to which switches, and how do they come on with the ignition?
Any idea on wiring a starter switch and engage switch on small engine like field and brush mower?
Seriously appreciate this video. I lost my keys to my 4th gen and im going to attempt what you did haha
Awesome!
Putting that same unit on my’55 Chevy pickup...👍🏽
This guy seems pretty cool love ur license plates
Thanks man, I try to keep life pretty chill.
Need a little help I wired it up and the push button starts perfect but when I turn the toggle switch off it doesn't kill the engine..Any thoughts ?
Nice video man but I will like to know if it’s necessary to use the relay that comes with the switch ?
Know I’m a little late to the party but will this work in a PATS system?
Gotta bypass your PATS first if you have one. There are great forums on doing this online. I know TheRangerStation has a few on it, really good info if you need to bypass yours.
@@StrangeGarage you are the man
Was looking at the same one from eBay.
Would you make a video on how to hook up a fuel pump to one of those switches?
Khash Bagheri I'm totally doing that next week. I need to do that on my boat already, so everybody is happy! Thanks for the input, and thanks for watching!
Strange Garage awesome! I have a 1988 Ford bronco and the fuel pump works fine along with everything related to it but it will only stay on for a minute then it will shut off. The computer isn’t doing its job and to fix it will cost a lot! I’m just going to hard wire it to a switch.
Khash Bagheri Same thing I'm gonna do on the panel, just my switch has a perfect little panel to fit in. Easy money man.
that's easy as hell to do.
Anyone here live in Toronto, ON 😂😂 help
Your voice sounds like the guy on Property Brothers. Nice video
I've never actually watched the show. Gonna have to check it out. Those are the twin brothers, right?
@@StrangeGarage Yes
So did you key have a chip in your key? I'm looking at a 96 mustang without key wanna do track car and will snatch if it's this simple theoretically lol
Whoa thanks! Nice truck. I've got a '97 Blazer. Push button time!
I have a question if you have a bad ignition switch that won’t start your car will this work? I’ve been trying to get answers so I can get somebody to install in on my car
Yep, it will work. But youre better off replacing the switch if possible.
How do I do it if I don't have a key...
86 camaro...i know once I drill the lock or cut wires I will find the keys
Does your truck have an immobilizer chip in the key?
Subscribed just cause of the horn, ordering a train horn for my trucks and boat soon haha
+Wilbur Katasse hell yeah man. What kind of boat you have?
Strange Garage a 24ft hewescraft Pacific Cruiser
Wilbur Katasse oh Nice! Probably caught some good fish on that bad boy! I'm building my first boat right now from a 17' bayliner capri.
Strange Garage Yeah haha living in Alaska spend a lot of time on the water, catching halibut and pulling crab pots
Did you use a ground from the the original wiring on ignition cylinder,, or just put an additional 1?
Has it ever stuck after pushing start ? Mines started Sticking and the starter wouldn’t shut off while truck was on. Any ideas why it’s doing that?
Are you using the relay? The relay may be "latching". It's all in how the relay is wired.
No, my buddy just wired straight from the ignition switch wires into the push start panel. Iv been hot wiring recently cause I’m afraid it’ll possibly catch fire or something
Hey bro how exactly did you bypass not having to use the key at all?
Are you talking about mechanically or electrically?
Mechanically, the guy before me just took out the key tumbler so the steering wheel wouldn't lock.
Electrically, I did it all in this video. That's how I did it.
@@StrangeGarage I want it just like yours, I have the ignition cylinder out along with the upper actuator gear so it won’t lock. I would just wire that ignition switch to the ignition switch on the panel?
Got a 2018 L83 and have a pink wire and a purple wire for ignition. Where on the switch do you attach these wires that come from the computer?
THANK YOU !!!! you have given me a very good idea, and im going to follow it and put a push button in my truck!!
What kind of truck do you have? Someone gave me a great idea the other day: leave the key as is, and just splice in the starter leg, so you still turn the key to turn on the ignition, then you can use the push button to start it and do whatever you want with the rest of the switches. I would have done that if my key worked.
@@StrangeGarage exactly what I need. I just think flipping all the switches is more fun!
What I want to know is, how could I do this, but make use of the key. Like to where the key must be in the on position before the push button will work.
I like the idea of having push start, and a switch for the fuel pump hidden somewhere.
Johnathon Reyes Yes, I love it. Check it:
Leave the key as is. All you need to know which 2 wires go to the solenoid. You run those 2 to the push button. That's is. Those are the only wires you change. Key still turns on the ignition, but the button is what starts the engine.
Strange Garage Thanks. Ill have to give it a go once I get everything I need.
Jump the starter
Where can I get this switch panel from
How did you keep it from setting off the alarm
So if i were to do this i would pull power from the wiring harness that leads to the actual turn key mechanism/switch?
You're just diverting the electricity from the factory switch to the switch panel. Basically copying the existing circuits and moving them. So your factory ignition switch has a contact for your starter relay, you just move those two wires to the push button. Same for the rest of your circuits. You just need to determine your continuity with a meter, exactly like I did in the video. You'll get itm
Awesome video, just one question, how would this work if my truck only has 2 (hot) wires out of 6?
How many total wires does the ignition have?
Oh, sorry, you answered that. Obviously the 2 hots are intended to power the other 4, so you can determine the specific circuits by pulling fuses and seeing which wire goes dead, then wire it up accordingly.
You can use jumper wires to distribute the power from one hot to multiple switches, and my guess is one hot wire is only for the starter. Easy peesy
Thanks for the reply. I've found out which wire is which. Will I be able to connect all the wires (other than the starter) to one toggle switch?
What I would do if I were you would keep using your key for the ignition, then wire the push button in series with the red "on" switch. That way you still have the secutiry of the key, and you dont overload the switch.
How did it you wire it to completely avoid using the key?
Just did this in mine, do you remember what color feeds the radio?
Walked out at "doner battery" twice thinking my dog was barking... lol. great video, great diagrams for us wire noobs...
Randall Clark My dog is seriously desperate for attention. Austrailian Shepherds have a lot of energy! Glad you could benifit from the video man! Good to hear!
So does the main switch also act as a kill switch to cut everything off, even the engine?
Main switch only manages the engine. The other switch handles the accessories.
how much to install one where do you live in washington
You want to install this on on 01 cobra I'm lost lol an did u have to get pats disabled for this
Is it really a good idea to have two red buttoms one for the horn and one to turn off the car, right next to eachother?! Arent you afraid to accedently turn off the car when reaching for the horn buttom?
The button doesnt turn the truck off, it only turns it on. The red switch turns it off. So no worries there.
where is that grey box with the slots located?
I have been looking to do something like this. On my 02. How did you bypass the chip?
My 97 doesnt have Anti Theft. There are dudes who can show you the process, but if I were you I would leave the key the way it is and just wire the "start" button in so the ignition still works normally.
Can you pass a cars technical validation with this setup? Is it legal to modify your daily car like this?
garaiselvis That's state specific. My state does no inspection except for special circumstances. If your state does inspections, you will totally need to still have am ignition lock of some kind, but it's more of an issue with insurance than "legality".
Im from europe. In my country we must have an inspection every year.
garaiselvis Sorry about the confusion, my channel never really got attention from outside the US until recently.
Its ok. But great video afterall
i have to do something similar to my volvo. how do your turn the motor off? im looking to get rid of my stitch also
Just flip the red switch down.
Where did you buy the switch kit
Is that a deisel bc my fords ignition is going out I’m thinking of doing this how hard is it
This is a Gas F150. It's not "hard", but I'm a mechanic with a speciality in electrical controls, so it may be harder for people who don't do a lot of electrical.
@@StrangeGarage thanks man I was just wondering I figured on a gas it was easier because on a deisel do Ik I gotta let the glow plugs warm up
Does your Vehicle have any form of protection where someone can't just push start and drive away? Besides locking the doors and hopefully nobody breaks in😂
