    Seeing that oil soaked engine brought back some memories. Way back when I worked for our city government as a tech at Central Garage, we had a dedicated room with a huge gas fired steam pressure cleaner. We kept full rain suits in the room or you'd be absolutely soaked. Pull a vehicle in, fire up the cleaner and in a few minutes - no more oil. No more paint either if you weren't careful.

    A few years ago I was watching a medical emergency show and there was a mechanic who had been observing the serpentine belt that was making noise when the belt broke and and was ejected from engine, hit the mechanic in the neck and almost completely beheaded him. He lived a couple days before he died. After seeing that I always stand clear of the belts path when looking under the hood!

  • @jthonn
    @jthonn 20 дней назад +5

    Now that's a shame. It will happen again. Oil and belts do not mix for sure. The cars that have timing belts, when the front seal leaks, it eats the timing belt. On those type cars I always would change the front seal when I would change the timing belt, water pump too, if it was in there. When you have a job that is involved like that , you do everything you can while you are in there. This car being the serpentine belt, it would be mandatory to at least try to stop some of that leaking. It will more than likely ruin the alternator too. I know, you are at the mercy of the customer. Taking it on a road trip at that. Just crazy, thanks for sharing.

    • @OverlandOne
      @OverlandOne 19 дней назад +3

      Exactly right. Without fixing that major oil leak, it will indeed happen again, and probably fairly quickly. Obviously not Kenny's fault as the customer said no, just replace the belt. That's a shame.

    Yes lots of places to leak, and customer should be glad the belt did not dive between pulley and cover, and cut the oil seal to pieces, because then they would be fixing them all, or risk running out of oil after 30 miles.

    Hey brother Kenny, I hope that when you became a mechanic back in the day that you realized rather quickly how much brake clean you might potentially use in the next 40 years and invested your money into the major manufacturers of brake clean. I am aware it is necessary for a job like this but is there any alternative? Do you ever suspect how using this product might affect your health after using it for 35 or 40 years? I love this channel and you brother Kenny. Best automotive repair for the average person on RUclips. BTW, I hate VW Tiguan. VW is weird!

    Kenny, does your shop charge a 'standard' shop fee, like 5% of the bill for example? In this case, I would add a 0 after the 5, charge a 50% shop charge and hope that this VW customer never returns. Some customers are not worth having as they expect too much!! All those orange cleaning rags and all that brake clean and cleanup of hands and arms to remove the oil from you add up fairly quickly.

    Come on fellows, Kenny did not say they were going on vacation, he said ( Mississippi if memory serves me ) you do not know why. They might be out of time to get to an important place or take care of a family matter. Just assuming that they don’t care about the repair or car condition is foolish. I just might be all they have because it might be all they can afford. It just might be that he or she is going for a job, funeral. We as a nation have to stop judging others. Everyone is different and live under different circumstances.
    Kenny is a very good mechanic and as a professional he has a hard time within himself of just not being able to properly repair a problem when he sees it. ( I been in thoes same situations as an electrician ) but, he still has to respect the customers decision. Now I am done ranting . Keep Kenny and his family in our prayers. 👍😎🇺🇸🙏🏽

    I am not a professional mechanic BUT if I was I am not too sure I would have worked on that car. The entire car was a pigsty. Some folks just don’t deserve to have a car that runs. Inside was filthy. Headliner was falling down like a cheap tent with half the poles missing. The engine was covered with oil. The engine light was on. They will probably make it about 3 miles down the road and when it quits running they will want you to fix everything for free because YOU did something to it.
