Great band! Great unforgettable song! Love that riff! Saw The Cult live back in the 80s, High energy show musically and Ian's great unique vocals made for an unfogettable show! Excellent Analysis Fil! Thanks! 🎼🎵🎶🇨🇦
From the first note, they took me to another place. Something happened to my brain. Hypnotic. In a trancelike state. Ian's vocals and moves. Billy. Ooh. Good, good stuff. They still do. Enough said. Thanks Fil.
Huge fan since they were the southern death cult!! Always thought Billy never got the credit he truly deserved, but Ian is one of the most criminally underrated singers ever!!!!
"She Sells Sanctuary" is as perfect a rock song as I have ever heard. Thanks for your analysis of the vocal, Fil. I always wondered why I liked Ian Ashbury's vocals so much.
Your demonstration shows beautifully how components of a song work like the components of a poem: While creating meaning together with the lyrics, the music and vocals also furnish the underlying structural elements that aid not only execution of the song, but also its interpretation, as you point out--accents, rhythm, etc. So cool! Thanks for a terrific analysis!
Years don't lie, but to still be able to pass snuff vocally is impressive for a singer who typically pushed the upper limits of his range when he was much younger. Of course you can hear the differences but the soul is still there.... and so to is the appreciation for the great music!
I'm amazed at the ones whose voices get continually better with age -- like Monkee Micky Dolenz for example. (My *own* range & vocal quality has radically improved over the decades since I *stopped* taking voice lessons and *started* drinking -- though I doubt I would fare better now than in 2005 when I foolishly told my mates in Cauhaus [ruclips.net/video/-r3ih9ElSzM/видео.html] I could do the vox if they wanted to cover "...Sanctuary" live!)

Timeless classic song. Great band that crossed genres and continents. Bikers, punks, goths, metalheads, trendies snd hipsters. Everybody loved The Cult. Very very underated. Wonderful.
Love the Cult growing up, wicked songs. Billy had such a thick tone and Ian had incredibly strong vocals. Ian's long black hair was quite a presence on stage back in the day.

I say that because ii a from Mexico and not a lot of people specially from the now a days know about them. Love from Mexico. Listen to some of YES.
Lee and Chappers played this on some newer Gretsch semi-hollow bodies several months back on the Anderton's guitar channel and they played it really well. Then I stumbled on the Cult's live studio version used here about 3 weeks ago. Low and behold, Fil picks it up and does a thorough analysis of it for us today! Guitar mucho happiness day! Makes me wish I still had my 300 hp 1986 Camaro ... Thanks Fil!!! :)
I’ve always loved the wall of sound that Billy created with the driving rhythms and melodic flourishes. Perhaps less well appreciated was the band’s rhythm section which I always thought was pretty good despite going through 3 drummers in a span of 3 years. I quite liked the drumming on the Love album, Hollow Man in particular.
I don't know much about guitars, but I heard that Billy Duffy plays that massively large one on this song, and it gives an incredible sound to the song.
Nice to see an expert value Ian's singing. In the early years when Ian sang (Southern Death Cult), he wasn't singing, he was screaming, and it was out of tone a lot. He must have had singing lessons around 85/86, because during/after the Love album his voice (and I am talking about live performances) became much and much better. She Sells Sanctuary blew me away when I first heard it on the radio in 1985, then I saw them live at Pinkpop '86, and have been a huge fan of them since. CFFC

Happy Easter Fil! 🙏🏻🐥Miss you terribly. Life has been hard again. This song was in the movie 'Singles', and I love it and the movie is highly underrated. I was really into The Cult around 'Fire Wiman'. Stay Safe! 💜
Fil, you mention so many "effects" that are available when playing the electric guitar. Would you consider doing a video that explains each "effect" and a sample of each? Thanks... Cheers.
I saw The Cult live right around this time, and what struck me most about Ian Astbury was how easy and comfortable he was in his vocal performance and delivery. Same with Billy Duffy, just a really experienced and veteran act and it showed.
Awesome song man! This was a staple on “progressive night” at the local clubs when I was in college back in the 80s. The opening riff always reminded me of bagpipes. Billy Duffy is fantastic and Ian (I believe?) also played drums on their studio recordings. “Love” is a monster album! Their next two albums are also great and got them a lot of radio air play. 🎼🎸✌🏻
Yeah it was kinda interesting...back then you could hear The Cult, followed by the Smiths (Billy Duffy was actually in a band with Morrissey before The Cult funny enough), and then New Order, REM, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Husker Du, etc. Music was so much fun back then!🙂
Breaking out the Fender to play and demonstrate those little bits and pieces really ups the quality of your analysis videos. We enjoy it very much. 🤘PS and your singing too!
Duffy's sound was more unique during Death Cult, at that time he sounded close to rockabilly, Ian used to employ sustained vocals, from the start with SDC, which few years later would become a trade mark of mainstream grunge, e.g. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam. But of course, no one in America would acknowledge that.... But the SDC guitarist was even more interesting in my humble opinion - at the time when they were described in the press as severely gothic.
Hi Fil, how you doing? First at all, congratulations for your work and for the accuracy and passion you put into analyzing each song. I played the bass, for many years, in a Cult covers band. I had a lot of fun 'cause their songs are beautiful and structurally well done. What I particularly like are the "instrumental interludes" that embellish and characterize many Cult songs, such as for example: "She sells sanctuary", "Rain", "Love removal machine", "Fire woman", etc... Keep it up Fil! Thank you very much. Great job. Greetings from Italy.
What a great song! He still has the pipes and I live that Black Falcon- I’m a Gretsch boy myself, owning a reissue ‘59 Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins. Great job as always Fil. Stay safe brother
Saw them in Aberdeen last October, phenomenal! Astbury's vocals and stage presence are out there. Watched your Quo Live review and now this, have subscribed . Loved this Cult review, great breakdown of Billy's play! ✌️🖤😎
Fil, you provided so much in your musical analysis. I enjoyed listening to the Cult's great performance(in the link you provided)as I've enjoyed their music. I'd always thought that as a vocalist, Ian Astbury was rather underrated. I saw him with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger as "The Doors of the 21st Century" in concert in 2002. To me, Ian proved to be versatile as a vocalist in the way he'd adapted his style and delivery of the Doors' songs. However, it seemed like the majority of the audience had already rated Ian before he started--and it wasn't in his favor. Even my friend who took me the concert said, "They don't sound the same; and the singer doesn't sound like Jim Morrison." Anyway, I also appreciated your vocal and guitar demonstrations. In the latter, great explanation of the use of call and response and the importance of accenting rhythms. If I'm not mistaken, this accenting rhythms on the offbeat--which you mentioned is common in rock and hard rock music--is a type of syncopation. Because I'm a musician, you really had me thinking musically here. I'm truly grateful for your getting me to do that...thanks, Fil!
This is my favorite video from you yet!! Please break out your guitar and vocals more often. For non-musicians such as myself they are great ways to better understand your commentary. Thanks, Fil!
What a damn great Rock band Fil! I was only listening to these guys the other day....AGAIN! One of my favourite songs. Thanks for doing this one.
Hi Fil,
how you doing?
Many of their songs have an AC/DC like style and feel. Always loved this band...
Saw them in Aberdeen last October, phenomenal! Astbury's vocals and stage presence are out there. Watched your Quo Live review and now this, have subscribed . Loved this Cult review, great breakdown of Billy's play! ✌️🖤😎
Thanks!
Pegasus is like the trademark of Dallas, Texas. They are everywhere😁. ❤️ the CULT!!
This is my favorite video from you yet!! Please break out your guitar and vocals more often. For non-musicians such as myself they are great ways to better understand your commentary. Thanks, Fil!
What a damn great Rock band Fil! I was only listening to these guys the other day....AGAIN! I absolutely love their style of rock...Ian’s unique vocals with an amazingly tight rhythm section along with Billy’s sensational guitar playing! Pure Cult is my favourite album of theirs.....man did that CD get some play time in my car! Awesome Fil! Cheers Mario! 😎🤘👌

"Love Removal Machine" was the first song I ever heard from them. They were new then and MTV played it back when it was music TV.
