  • Tsuyama city of Okayama prefecture is not somewhere you'd expect to see that many tourists, but you'd be surprised at how many well-preserved traditional machiya houses are still left in this small castle town.
This is the biggest portal site where you can find all the properties for sale in Okayama prefecture.

Despite the silence and lack of other tourists, this place still holds significant magic. Thanks!

Good to hear that...but really it's a shame so little tourists were there despite so many well preserved machiya houses/shops.

What a fantastic discovery. I'd be happy just walking up and down that street for hours.

As peaceful it could be to live somewhere like this town, I doubt I could ever find work to sustain it in japan, where I can't even find livable labor in the US.

I have been to Tsuyama many times. I think it gets a steady amount of visitors, but the time of year does affect it. Its castle is very famous among castle-lovers (one of Japan's Top 100 Castles), and there are a lot of events that attract visitors, particularly the cherry blossoms and its light-up events. Horumon Udon also attracts "foodies" to the city. It has a sweet senbei and manju that are also popular. Shurakuen Garden and the historic district are also very nice. Various new attractions and rennovations have taken place, so I wouldn't say tourism is "dying" there at all, but of course, it would always be great if more people would visit.

Beautiful looking house, like the garden.
For a town with 100000 people, there was not that many seen - i dont know if it was the time or the day in question.
The walls of where that car park is now are very interesting

I think despite the number of people living there, most residents go about their lives without needing to visit the historical areas...only for tourists? But not that many tourists visited when I was there.

The castle looks like the castle from the mini-series "Shogun" with Richard Chamberlin. One of my favorite books and movies is Shogun.

I feel your "what a waste" deeply. It's very nostalgic. This place, that once have been vibrant with life and noise and shopping bustle is now a beautiful forgotten relique, awaiting its end, - cracking, mending what has to be be mended, but resigned to its fate.
6:46-7:07 small episode is so sad. A house entrance with the open door, as a promise of human presence and warmth of life, and then - nothing... A parking lot on the other side. A broken promise.
And yet it's not abandoned. People live there. Do you think they mind the absence of tourists and hustle? Life seems so secluded there. There ARE people, yet there's nobody on the streets, no shops open, no restaurants. I wonder, what kind of people live there. How they live. I imagine it'll be increadibly sad and lonely to move there even for a month. If you don't belong there, if you don't have a family in one of these beautiful houses, if you don't know people in town, you'll be totally utterly alone. It's like waiting for the end of the world with people hiding from a calamity you're unaware of.

This is a bit melodramatic. Tsuyama is not a large city, but it has nice tourist attractions. You'll always find tourists in Tsuyama, and people also visit for its food. As far as loneliness, people are very lonely in crowded Tokyo. Often people say small town people are friendlier and more willing to talk than city people. Personal effort also plays a factor.

Hi Marion thanks for the comment. 2 million yen won't do you much for the renovation...but 2 million USD you can do whatever you want...not sure if you are asking in yen or USD.

How many shops did you see open during your visit there? Was there at least 1 convenience store and/or family mart? I know it's a town, not a full-sized city, but as long as there's at least 1 of each there, i think I could be pretty comfortable.

There are many convenience stores in Tsuyama, but they are not allowed to build convenience stores inside the Historic Preservation District, because they ruin the integrity of the area.
