It was nice meeting Lawrie on the Saturday with the wife and little one, both of whom enjoy watching your video. Despite being a big steamie fan, it always gets me that the lad is hesitant to go on the footplate of an engine.
I rember seeing several Wickham trolleys laying next to the line on the Totnes to Buckfastleigh run , I love the name plate on the front of your example 😀
Just a bit of geography. Agecroft No 3, built in Newcastle-on-Tyne, worked at Agecroft Power Station (NW Manchester), a Ruston built in Lincoln and a Baguley built in Burton-on-Trent. Then the Wickham built in Bedford. I remember going across North Manchester to see the locos at Agecroft I worked for a while at ICI Blackley, so had daily sightings of Isabel (HL) and Lady Armaghdale (HC)
The Gala weekend was superb and good to see you there Lawrie . I thoroughly enjoyed exhibiting my layout both days. I managed to have a few breaks to look outside and what an excellent job the railway put on with a variety of locos and stock. Great to see the Wickham stretching its legs. Hopefully the Middy will use it a bit more.
Hi it’s Mark, I was on the Pendennis Castle footplate earlier with my dad and Drew. Sorry you were talking to me and asked me a question but I couldn’t hear as it was loud. Was great to meet you.
10:06 you didn't need to cook it _with the loco?_ Is that a real railroad breakfast then? Okay, Hyce needs to cook a proper breakfast on an episode of K37 Kitchen... But seriously, that is awesome of them to serve Lawrie what looks to me like a fry-up.
Good video but Wickham went to east Anglian railway museum 9 years ago for trolleys & dollies event . I was middy driver for that event. So 2nd time away .
greetings from soaking wet California. We have near me in the little town of El Dorado, a small heritage railroad that operates over one of California's earliest railways using equipment very similar to your Wickham. There are three similar powered vehicles and each has it's own trailer and they all drive out in unison to provide a lovely ride on a portion of the Placerville branch of the SP. I think last year they may have started using a diesel locomotive and a couple of converted freight cars, but I wasn't able to get by on a working day last year to see it. Individuals have posted videos which can be found by searching El Dorado Western Railroad on this platform. As usual, another enjoyable video.
I enjoyed the video. I am Joey's Father. I think you mentioned the Wickham is standard gauge (56 1/2")? The engine looks like a V twin, a 2 cylinder. Is it a 2 cycle or a 4 cycle. What Company made the engine and the motorcar? Thank you!!! Joe
Hello there! Yes the Wickham is standard guage - though our loading guage is way smaller than the US. This one had its engine replaced in the late 50s with a JAP 2 cylinder 4 stroke. Apparently its an engine that was used on racing motorbikes. Apparently its rare and worth more than the Wickham itself!
I know we have seen a walkabout at Middleton Railway; what about at Whitwell and Reepham? perhaps as a steppingstone to a series of walkabouts at the Statfold Barn?
The start and end of this video was Train Truckers On A Budget. You were missing your what if disaster if it was unloaded incorrectly. We have two Wickham trolleys on the Severn Valley Railway one is a enclosed version stationed at Bewdley and the other is in the siding at Highley which is similar to the Mid Suffolk's one but with front panels and windows front and rear weather protection canvases. We also have the more up to date modern day version of the Wickham trolley which is a light weight trolley with seats facing back to back powered by a Honda GX engine you usually see on generators, lawn mowers and other equipment. due to its light weight it is a lot easier for four people to pick up and turn around.
These wickham trolleys seem pretty much like the British version of American speeders I almost wonder if there is a way to take an American speeder over to England for a vacation
I want a Wickham (or a Fairmont speeder). There's a decommissioned branchline close to my home, which is now used for those horrible pedal powered touristy "hand"cars. This or a real handcar would look so much better, but knowing German bureaucracy, you probably wouldn't get permission to run it...
PLease! Reepham is pronounced REEP HAM not Reefam (not many people seem to know that!) So, here's a test - Please pronounce: "Happisburgh" If you immediately said: "Haysboro" you are right! And "Cley" rhymes with Eye. What an interesting County Norfolk is! I was born in Leziate . . . . .
As a Fairmont section car owner I like this alot. I can't stand driver for a payment days though. As far as im concerned any railway that has them is doing a disservice to their own volunteers who work hard over many years out of their own time to earn that position. Driver is a privileged position that is earned not bought. Otherwise, everyone could just save all their time and pay for a day when they want a drive and not bother about volunteering. Where's the incentive when people can just pay money and get up there?. Not right on any level in my books. I know its become fairly common practise now because making a profit out of steam trains is getting more and more difficult all time, i get it but doing that is the biggest slap in the face you could give a volunteer workforce. Stop placing profits over the importance of volunteers. If that means shutting down, then so be it. If you cant survive without drivers for fivers etc than they probably should be liquidated already. Its insulting to all those doing the right thing for these railways weather they realise it or not. I plead with every heritage operator to stop this volunteer insulting practice. You either take people who pay you to let them drive for a day and do away with the processes to becoming an engineman or you keep the processes and get rid of the bought privilege. If you keep the bought driver program than its an outright abuse to subject your volunteers to the correct process. Full stop.
Driver experiences are a great way to get people into the hobby. I've lost count of the amount of people who have begun volunteering after being able to have the chance to drive something. Any income helps to keep these organisations running, it isn't just enough to sell tickets to ride on a train. Just shut it down you say. And what happens to all the people who have put countless hours into the place? The social aspect of being with friends and working towards a common goal. These places, whislt they have to make money, are not set up to make us Rich. We do it because we love our hobby and railway Heritage.
@@thurstablelane7567 I'm sure they do, and it is still a fair price I think - as I said, inflation happens! Just lacks the poetry of driver-for-a-fiver.

Glad you enjoyed it, they put on a good event! With the extention complete they're talking about using it more regularly for the track gang!
Another great one Lawrie!

I find eggs very hard to do well on the footplate. Sausage, bacon, hash browns, pizza, all fine. But eggs? Pain in the backside!
Now this makes me want a little track inspection vehicle like that trolley.
Me too!
Great Video and what a great event I looked that place up it looks like they really have put a lot work into that place !

Thanks Lawrie, lots of variety there, you probably needed that breakfast with the weather!🙏🙏

I totally agree. British railways express passenger blue, Caledonian blue...look especially great on steam locos
