YES. I'm watching the series for the first time and I was just saying to my wife today that Trinket is essentially just a baby that Laura carries around like an escort quest. It doesnt DO anything useful, but constantly takes her time and attention. Laura is just so damn cute tho, it works out just fine.

Taliesin is so great at non-verbal roleplaying. I was amused by him spending several minutes pretending to eat the crumbled biscuits and ducking out of the way when Felicia/Lyra pulled out her wand.
I’m laughing, imagining when Travis rolled for his stats. He could’ve used the 6 for his charisma and portrayed Grog as an intense, frightening Goliath that lacked people skills because he scares everyone away. But somewhere along the line he decided that the group needed to have a goofy, dopey oversized 2 year old. I couldn’t be happier about it hahahaha
When he created Grog he'd never played D&D before, and didn't even fully know how to make a character. He's said that he wanted as little responsibility and as little need to think as possible, so he made the Grog a total dumbass. He also said (half-jokingly) that Grog's an idiot because he himself is an idiot, even though he's a genuinely fucking smart guy.
I identify so much with Travis sometimes. I have about the same build (6'4" 225lbs of mostly muscle), we are a weird mix of nerd and athlete, and our first character was a big dumb tank 🤣🤣🤣
Around 41:30 ish you can see Marisha in the chat (MarishaRaygun, I think?) say "Oh god, if they are fighting a white dragon....what the hell are WE gonna get?" & I love that
@@kaityngrey9297 On that note, at 1:56:20 , I love watching Lauren just absolutely panic attack anytime an attack actually lands. At the same time though, I'm also wanting to just enjoy the moment that she does hit and just relax. One of my favorite sayings is "Don't be sorry, just be better". They day when she can more calmly handle those situations, the better she'll feel about describing her attacks and such (I hope). #Critters4life
I think Matt is just doing it to be cruel. It's a 50% chance to grow a full beard. 1-50 should have you grow one 51-100 you miss out (Or vice versa) First roll was a 40 something = no beard Second Roll was a 60 something = Still no beard Third roll was a 94 (I think....90 something) = Still no beard and Matt says you need to be on the lower end. Forth roll was a 40 something and still no god damn beard. Honestly if I was Travis I'd call bullshit. JUST GIVE GROG THE GOD DAMN BEARD!!!
@@kylemadden3485 The problem is, the magic item says you grow a beard if you are capable of growing one. Goliaths do not grow any hair at all, normally. Matt is already being kind by letting grow a little at a time.

I don't think it was outright damage nerfs, his DCs for the skillshots like wingshots were lowered slightly, as far as I know. Maybe his damage was adjusted, who knows.
Haha I love the image of Percy during the night attack. I just imagine him clamoring out of his bedroll in his pajamas with his buttflap down, whipping out his pepperbox, and laughing maniacally. He then mows down the orcs, laughing even harder. He runs barefoot on the cold, hard ground toward Grog, still laughing. As he runs, his butt opening flapping as he runs, his buttox fully exposed, he whips his gun out and fires at another orc. Blows its head off and he starts laughing even harder. His party mates are all shocked at this mad man running around blowing apart orcs with his buttocks hanging out.

I think Travis might be the smartest person in that room. XD
Travis pretty much is the most intelligent person in the room. He plays a very low intelligence character and has to try and hold back on saying something that he knows Grog would never say or know to say. It makes it a challenge for Travis and I think he likes it.
I'm loving how Felecia just keeps making everyone lose it...I don't recall seeing Percy break character to laugh very often but she's seemingly got his number.
seeing travis react to a warlock doing things... "You got all kinds of shits", I can see him being inspired enough. No wonder he made fjord. The face of awe he makes, experiencing something new, and be like "I wanna do that". It was... not only good, but pleasant, almost heartwarming, for some reason,
@@kaleidoscope942 She also wanted to be a rogue first. And now both the people she's lost her favoured class to, Liam and Travis, have both multiclassed into paladin
yeah Laura wanted rogue, and Liam snatched it before she could. For CR 2 Laura told Travis how cool warlocks were, and then he snatched that from her as well lol. Laura just needs to keep her good ideas to herself tbh 🤣😅
Travis is almost like the novice audience POV character of the show. As a first time player he's learning new things all the time and becoming more immersed in the world and invested in the story. As a side note, it's interesting to me on a personal level that he is a "Handsome Jock" type of guy who is really enjoying playing D&D with his friends. That sort of subtextual bridge building is cool.
God my love for Lyra and Zara will never fade. And I'm super impressed with Mary, since she's never even played before but was still very fun and exciting to watch.
On my second run through this wonderful series and I just have to say I adore how Scanlan goes around introducing himself as "The Kingslayer" and the leader of Vox Machina all the time, but as soon as he finds someone even more insecure than him, he steps aside and lets Lyra live out her little fantasy. That's some in-depth roleplay.
Felicia has my heart outside of the game, but Zahra was played so damned well that she was easily my favorite. The fact this was her first time playing goes volumes towards her acting ability. I would love to see her as a regular.
Like the good kind of annoying! I skipped forward during the livestreams of campaign one so I missed Lyra, and I absolutely love how she did this! She's adorable, naive, and annoying, but in a charming way not an obnoxious way.
39:13 is one of my favorite Taliesin moments. The dude is such a phenomenal role player and character actor and his personality is so charismatic and endearing, that I honest to god don't know if he's playing that reaction up for Percy or that's legitimately an "oh shit" moment for him.
Damn, Mary's voice is amazing and powerful. They all are amazing voice actors, but she just opens her mouth and you hear what her profession is. But she seems like the kind of person you don't want to be you boss^^
I mean, keep in mind that they're all experienced actors. Getting into, and *being* in character is literally their job, and will likely be even easier since these are characters of their own creation. It's more the mechanics of the game that I'd expect her to be unfamiliar with. I'm just starting into the series myself though, and am actually typing this before watching most of this session, so I don't actually know how things go mechanically yet :P
I know I think Mary Elizabeth was very impressive and I always find myself rewatching the episodes she is in I really would love to see her in the new campaign 3 I enjoyed her time very much
Mary is a voice acting veteran of 20+ years but she's also done stage and screen play. She was even a guest star on Xena back in the day, she's an amazing character actor
my first char for 5.0 1/2 Orc Barbarian. I saw the Racial critical and ran with that. 1st Game session I find out there are no 1/2 Orcs in the barbarian setting the DM was running, but he allowed me to play the 1/2 Orc because I wasn't informed.I however lost the Racial critical and it was changed into a 'knockdown' attack. Needless to say: I hated that char, the other char's in the party looked down on him (they were Elves) and as soon as I could, I made a new char.
@@MistahBryan That's lame man, it's HIS job to inform you of that BEFORE you make your character. And as a half-Ogre Barbarian using the half-Orc racials, I have to say I'm sorry your GM castrated your character :( Those Savage Attacks/Brutal Criticals are absolutely amazing, makes us even more lethal in the field.
Made a phoenix sorcerer for my first character and without anyone telling me we were running an infernal campaign with all of the enemies and bosses having fire resistance or outright fire immunities, asked if i could change characters but he said that its a short campaign(2 sessions left) and that next campaign if you use that character we will be fighting things that arent flame resistant
@4D4plus4is4D8 "Nerfed" the sorcerer. As in, still more powerful than Rules as Written which only allows a cantrip as your action if you cast any spell as a bonus action, and doesn't allow any spell as your bonus action if you used your action to cast a levelled spell. I know it's been 2 years, but it's an important point to make for the new players around.
+Jeff The party was split in the previous episode and were assigned different tasks to each, they decided to invite guests and do the task separately. While one group played the other was also there as well but only as spectators.
Percy was dying during Lyra's intro conversation and so was I. This is the best episode yet so far. And Zahra is such a gem too. These two additions are amazing! Poor Lyra constantly getting interrupted 😂😭
One of my favorite moments in the series-- PERCY: I actually am quite hungry. I don't know if I'm quite capable of eating papaya off the floor but if there's, I don't know, something brunchy? GROG: I have some dried food rations, would you want one of those? PERCY: ... It'll do in a pinch. LYRA: Here's a crumpled biscuit! PERCY: A crumpled biscuit sounds-- I like her already. GROG: [looks offended and pissed off] I will remember this slight. 28:38 😆
Man, the way Mary said "How fascinating" in response to Vex telling her she has a brother was simultaneously subtle and extraordinarily condescending. She didn't lay on any sarcasm in the tone of her voice, but as an audience we know it was there. Great voicework.

actually he took the warlock idea from Laura. She was thinking about being a warlock and told Travis how cool they are, then he decided to go with that lol.
On my 2nd watch through these 2 episodes were the ones that saved the show for me. The dynamic, the RP the considerably less IRL drama. I was so close to giving up until this beauty of an episode. Even Taliesin seemed to come out of his shell this episode. Also realized Matt had split the players having the biggest problems with orion into a different group + Taliesin. Definitely seems on purpose.
I agree an always come back to reqatch the episodes I enjoy Felicia character but Mary Elizabeth playing Zhara is just incredible and I have watched her several times over the years wish she would come be guest in campaign 3
First time watching, and I definitely agree. I wanted to reach through my screen and smack “Tiberius” a few times in the way he’d been treating Percy the past few episodes.
This is a good observation, but also I'm pretty sure Liam was through with him at a lot of points too. In fact I feel like at this point in their campaign, the only person who was cool with him generally was Marisha
I've watched Felicia roleplay Lyra for all of 2 minutes and I already love how adorable this character is. Edit: Also Zahra. I love the way Mary Elizabeth plays her all mysterious and what-not. She would annoy me as a character but as a watcher I can't help but appreciate the amount of talent that goes into acting such a character so smoothly and eloquently.

This is my second time watching C1 and it just occurred to me that Matt's decision to split the party and have these guests was probably one of the best things he's ever done for the show. Debate Orion's behavior and possible metagaming/cheating all you want, but it's undeniable that all the players were getting increasingly frustrated and uncomfortable with how he was playing and acting out of RP, so splitting them up and bringing incredibly likable people on the show probably saved the whole thing from falling apart/losing viewers due to the players' conflict. Also the groups he picked were perfect for balancing the players' relationships and their characters' classes. This whole side quest situation is just such a breath of fresh air with new characters and new inter-player dynamics. Obviously having Orion leave the show was the best solution, but this was definitely a great stalling tactic to have Orion still be involved but decrease the tension for everyone involved for a couple weeks.
I wish you hadn't brought up Orion when he wasn't even here. I had hoped for a two comment section break from all that drama. I will say that I feel sorry for the guests Wil Wheaton and Will Friedle who are going to have to deal with him. Hoping that he's somehow on his best behaviour and that those sessions went well. See now I'm bitching about the very thing I didn't want to see the complaints of. He is certainly a mixed bag but I'm just done to the point that hearing and talking about it all is almost as terrible as any of the shit he pulls.
Nicol Bolas I get that and I agree. We all crave some fresh air from him. But to be fair I’m not the only one talking about him on this particular episode, and other people are saying more negative/snarky things about him here than I have. When I wrote this comment I was doing my very best to not make it another bash Orion session, but to honestly recognize the affect he was having on everyone else and commend Matt for his decisions as a DM. I tried to focus on the other players’ and Matt’s responses to him and the general dynamic they were having, and not on the things he was doing wrong individually. If it came across as more bashing, I’m sorry, that wasn’t my goal, but I really don’t think I’m the biggest offender on that front here. The fact that you responded and the way in which you responded means you’re also engaging in the negativity whereas you could have just kept scrolling. I’m just trying to look at a potential positive aspect of a bad situation.
@@audreybristol-evans1881 Fair point. You were just the first one I found honestly. And I've done a fair bit of arguing both ways over the course of my binging. I just wish I didn't have to but then again I find my self unable to resist and just leave it alone. And yes those other comments do run the gamut from willful ignorance to lashing out just because they've found a convenient target.
And I meanwhile love/hate the Orion drama because he way more deserves the criticism that was leveled his way (unlike the Marisa criticism which I think is a weird mix of sexism, and not being able to tell the difference between Keyleth and Marisha. That being said, I started with campaign 2, and I think that Beauregard is great, I have yet to see Keyleth's most infamous moments).
Audrey Ruth I mostly agree, but the other party really got the shortest of the short end of the stick. both guests have decided to bring grumpy characters, and while I love will friedle and keshaw, he really works better when he’s balanced better with more upbeat people. orion is pretty much always grumpy, wheaton played a grump, and even liam had pretty low energy. marisha having to carry those two sessions wa exhausting to watch. it’s possible that it had to be like this because of interpersonal stuff, but I still feel for her, that was some hard fucking work she did during parts 3 and 4
re-watching. I have been looking forward to this episode. Mary has never played dnd before and she plays flawlessly! knows her spells and abilities, plays in character, interacts with and engages the other players.
I love the subtlety and RP choice (I guess) of the fact that Lyra's first character trait that's introduced is her clumsiness and her Dexterity is 7 :D Pretty sure it was intended but this small choice makes the stats feel actually real.

I don't think it was outright damage nerfs, his DCs for the skillshots like wingshots were lowered slightly, as far as I know. Maybe his damage was adjusted, who knows.
i mean when u take 3 natural 20's come on!
he lowered his ac and increased his crit count because of the necessity.
Blake Dale good sir you are a godsend
Audrey Ruth I mostly agree, but the other party really got the shortest of the short end of the stick. both guests have decided to bring grumpy characters, and while I love will friedle and keshaw, he really works better when he’s balanced better with more upbeat people. orion is pretty much always grumpy, wheaton played a grump, and even liam had pretty low energy. marisha having to carry those two sessions wa exhausting to watch. it’s possible that it had to be like this because of interpersonal stuff, but I still feel for her, that was some hard fucking work she did during parts 3 and 4
Nice the neon sign gives Laura Vex's Elf ears
Watching this back, I just noticed you can hear Liam cackling in the next room during Lyra's story about her first time with Aldor.
re-watching. I have been looking forward to this episode. Mary has never played dnd before and she plays flawlessly! knows her spells and abilities, plays in character, interacts with and engages the other players.
You've got the perfect warlock!
"My spellcasting is actually overhand but I understand..."
She’s great 🥳👏🏻
39:14 "one adult white draGON, ONEADULTWHITEDRAGON!?" god i laughed XD.
I love the subtlety and RP choice (I guess) of the fact that Lyra's first character trait that's introduced is her clumsiness and her Dexterity is 7 :D Pretty sure it was intended but this small choice makes the stats feel actually real.
I like how no one noticed when Matt started the story with dire wolves and because of Laura's comment they switched to worgs half way through. at about 57 min
I did notice :)
At about 8:19 they start playing
Edit: at about 1:34:41 they come back from break and start playing again
Toni Snakes thanks
These two were so refreshing to have after the negative and grandstanding attitudes/conflicts over the past episodes.
Bro yes!!! I'm currently watching the series for the first time and omg, the difference between Zahara/Lyra to tiberius is like night and day
I love how Felicia started rping her negative reaction to Zahra's Suggestion spell pretty much immediately after she cast it.

Commenting to boost
Not all heroes wear capes.
.
When you realize Caduceus canceling every one of Matt’s crits is the revenge talison spoke of lol
"First and foremost, I'd like everyone to roll initiative" Mercer, 2015.
That's how I like to return from breaks.
And start an episode
I'm not seeing any comments about "Mysterious head-kiss" and I am APPALLED at everyone.
I'm so sad that no one has explained this, I'm dying inside.
It looked like Orion and lold
3:30 When Orion randomly appeared and kissed Matthew's head
Just a spontaneous gesture of friendship? I randomly poke my friends on their noses when I feel like it, so maybe something like that. Or, perhaps working towards alleviating any ongoing tensions people have been sensing...
Boop
Imagine playing DnD for the first time and its with Matt Mercer and Vox Machina
There aren't enough words in the english language to express how much more enjoyable it is to watch Lyra than Tiberius
And that doesn't even touch on how fun it is to watch Zahra.
I genuinely do not see where the fun is in this character...
@@SerLagsalot I find lyra annoying but not as much as tibs
Mary McGlynn sounds more like Zahra than herself.
@@SerLagsalot i think the point of the ops comment was that though lyra can be annoying to watch, its still far better then watching tiberius (of which i agree)
Watching this today, after the Nein become actual pirates, makes me laugh when grog grows his fishing line beard. "I'm like a pirate now." Just wait buddy.... lol
Heh...
The CHEMISTRY. In this episode is just GAHH. I found myself uncontrollably smiling and laughing so much throughout.
"like a 14 year old whos father doesnt love him enough to teach him how to groom"

I just lost it then almost cryed a little at that.
poor percy
Ouch.
Percy is my favorite right now. It always changes, but I love everything about the character and he always makes great decisions.
I would say he's the most human, but in the normal party he's actually the only human lol
Percy (the character) only ever makes terrible decisions lol
Summary begins at 8:15, game at 9:34. Break from 1:23:36 to 1:34:42. Game wraps at 2:40:53.

had to scroll quite a bit this time, have a boost

Took a while to find you this time 😢
@@Thereadingmusiclover Let's hope this makes it easier for others to find it, too!
Have a boost
Percy: *takes biscuit*
Grog: “I will remember this slight”
28:58
In Percy's defense, Grog made it very clear that he was already a little annoyed by having to share the floor papaya with Trinket 😝😘😂👏👏
**spoilerish**
In later episodes:
Percy: "grog i need something from the bag of holding"
Grog: "mmmmmhhhh, do you now? How interesting... =_="
