- Come along as we share our Trenitalia Intercity Notte Excelsior Doppio room review. This was the best Italian sleeper train we rode in Italy. We rode this train from Palermo, Sicily to Rome. This room was by far our favorite sleeper train room. We had our own bathroom as well a spacious room. We were served a continental breakfast before arriving into Rome. This train is loaded on a ferry part way through the ride. We loved this part of our Italy train vacation.

Its crazy that I feel like these two are my friends, they are so nice and down to earth, the beginning with Rob trying to get in bed was funny.
The beginning with Rob trying to get up on the bed had me cracking up. That room you had does look amazing! I’ve got two kids, ages 7 and 11 and that room would be perfect for our family, especially with the bathroom so I wouldn’t have to take anyone down the hall in the middle of the night. I talk like we’re planning a trip there but I’d love to visit Italy as that’s where all my great grandparents were born. I’m very proud of my Italian heritage and would love to visit the little towns my family are from. We even have relatives there still. I’ve only been to Europe once in college and we stayed in London, Paris and Amsterdam. So much history on that side of the Atlantic and I hope to share a similar experience with my kids someday. Great video!
Thank you both for your videos. Looking at your videos provides me with a vacation. Love you guys. My trip to Venice including a night on the orient express and on to France was cancelled with my travel group. Thanks again for taking us along.
What a nice looking train. I was thinking Rob was going to sleep on the floor. Being old I would love to have my own bath room. Wow a train on a boat. Looks like it travels pretty fast.
There's an Italian-themed cafe near me, in San Francisco. They offer "Americano" coffee. The owner said that during WWII, American GI's found many of the European coffee brews to be too strong, and asked to have them watered down, a bit. That became a standard offering. It's what I prefer, when I'm in Europe.
Great video. I've never been south of Rome, and the Notte is now on my "to do" list.
Another great trip. Thanks for sharing. Also loved Rob’s upper bunk challenge. 👏👏👏
Omg! I laughed so much watching Rob get in the beds! You guys are so fun. Just love watching your adventures and thanks for all the great advice
It looks a little nicer than some of the other Euro sleepers.
You are a lovely couple just discovered your channel very much enjoying your travels 😀 Diane from the UK 🇬🇧
This was so interesting! Thank you for another great video!
Beautiful views, expert commentary. You two are so cute and funny. 😆 Rob attempting to get in that upper bunk was was hilarious....but he was successful! 😂🤣 Really enjoyable travel vlog.
Rob I hope you are recovered by now , Look like they should have stickers on the door showing where the ladder is for the upper beds .
Rome looks beautiful! Love your travels on the train.
I really enjoy your videos. Would love to see you do a trip from Toronto to Vancouver on The Canadian.
Yes! That would be a great one
Oh, my golly. Said out loud, “You can do it, Rob! Tell him, Allie!”
Such a wonderful train trip to enjoy with you guys. The train is gorgeous as are the views. I enjoy Grounded Life Travel so much and don’t think I’ve missed any episodes. Stay safe. Much love ❤. I’m I Nashville, Tennessee BTW.
Definitely the best room so far!😊❤
We did the Rome to Messina train last May. Excelsior doppio. Excellent. The in room bathroom was awesome for this old guy. We are trying to book on the Rome to Siracusa train this May. Thanks for the great video. If you can't get the better room on the train to Palermo you can go to Messina on the Siracusa train and pick up a regional to Palermo in a few hours. The Czarina and I both view this trip as one of our top ten travel experiences. Next time I am going to get my own bottle of Prosecco so we each have one.
I really like you guys! Thanks for all the awesome content.
I love love all your videos they are very informative
Thanks for sharing your adventure and experiences on the train to Rome. I like the idea of having the bathroom with shower in the room! The train/ferry portion was especially interesting, along with views of the coastline.🇺🇸👍
Fantastic room! so spacious. 2 crackers for an entire bottle of wine, great trade! Great video!
Another great Adventure, nice 2 watch you to having fun
Glad you found that ladder, Rob!!
Hello from Naples, Florida. We enjoyed your review. Thank you so much for sharing with us
awesome vid!
"... Not a climbing enthusiast." but Rob made it to the top, like a kid! 😁 What a baffling ladder! Who'd find that? But the extension... Something was sure odd here. I think the little slot on the edge of Rob's bunk would fit a cell phone, while plugged in. It's right by the socket. Loved that bathroom!
The train ferry crossing is amazing! I had never heard of that. Our planned trip to Italy got cancelled by the pandemic, but we will make it someday! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
The ladder adventure reminded me of last summer when we rode the night jet from Paris to Vienna but they were short a car so we ended up with two Hungarian ladies in our berth in the tippy top bunks . No ladder … they were amazing acrobats ! 😂
Nice! Enjoy! Just ordered the snacks for the train trip. : )
Very nice room 👌
Nice bathroom and other features. Puts Amtrak to shame. The Italians do a great job with design.
Interesting. Compartment seems similar in size to a Superliner Bedroom. Upper berth looks claustrophobic but same on Amtrak. Unlike Superliners, your compartment was new and fresh looking. Price was considerably lower than Amtrak. I think it was ideal for one person. I couldn't handle the upper berth. How was the temperature? And how about that "American" coffee? In South America "Cafe Americano" means super weak coffee. I'd have taken the espresso. That's one of the best things in Italy. Did you tip anyone? I doubt they expect it.
Considering you’re getting your room w/bath, your meal and your travel, the price seems reasonable.
i love strong coffee so having espresso/capucinno would be no problem
Great video.
I'm wondering how did you purchase tickets?
So breakfast was bread, bread, more bread, juice and coffee. Don't do this if you're on a low carb diet.
Great views and it looked like a fairly comfy room.
Typical Italian breakfast. I guess since they eat dinner at, like 9 or 10 pm, they don’t want much in the morning. German breakfasts are my favorite. Hearty.
Great video! I'm curious if you have access to any other part of the train, though - is there any sort of observation car or cafe car? Seems like it might get a little claustrophobic if you have nowhere else to go on the train.
There aren't any other areas to visit on this one
Part 2; Used Google Earth to look at the ferry terminals. Wow!!
when Rob was trying to get in the bunk, I think the foot hold he said was too small maybe a place for your phone at night?
We're planning a transatlantic Cruise in the spring. The cruise will end up in Rome, italy. We're thinking of spending 2 to 3 weeks touring Italy. We will end up in Naples because we have family there. Although my husband said we may need to go there first and drop off some luggage, and then do our taurine and then go back to Naples. Any help any suggestions whatsoever would be appreciated. I'm taking notes on this video right now. Thank you so much
Are only cold water available on showers in excelsior sleeper of Trenitalia?
I was told that in another RUclipsr's video.
Just thinking about taking a cold shower in the fall or winter makes me feel like I'm going to catch a cold.
That is too funny about the bunk bed. Who would have known about the ladder, well maybe the Europeans. Taller people are going to bum their heads easily at the upper bunk. Nice touch on the wine though, the other type of water to the Europeans. Nice room layout and the bathroom is great. Thought Canadian VIA rail is nice but this is even better. Good price for the room. What about the food?
Wait...what did you think of the 'American' coffee? Was it as good as the espresso?
Was wondering how is the best way to get your advice. Looking to take my family on our first train trip down the east coast from Connecticut to orlando...and to be honest have no idea what I am doing. Can u help?
How much did they pay? In March 2023 I've paid 94 Euros for a trip from Milano to Riposto in Sicily in Excelsior Class Sleeper! Sicily here I come. I'm going on a trip on the Circumetnea from Riposto to Caltania the on to Scicli where many o the Mantalbano exterior scenes weere shot!
Have a great trip!
@@GroundedLifeTravel I had a great trip. There were a few problems, but not major ones. Gentle letter of complaint to Trenitalia and €25 off my next trip on Trenitalia
Thank you for sharing. I would love to explore Italy (and everywhere)but organized tours are so expensive. Blessings on you and your adventures.
you as to ask!
Do they have rooms for wheelchair users 🤔
So ... what city did you leave from?
We started in Palermo
Is there any common area to eat drink and mingle?
No there isn't on this train, but when you are on the ferry there is.
Price seems not cheap, maybe flying is cheaper? Of course very different experience
The room seems too small. All the things given should have been in place before occupancy but not a bad price. Bread/ crackers and juices=breakfast, wow.
The Italian breakfast is sweet - and light: usually just some biscuits or a croissant and a cup of coffee.
