I love train culture in Europe, how much Europe has invested and continues to invest in trains should be a model to the US

      @arnauuu1 4 года назад +18

Yeah, why it's not so anymore in the US? I mean, America was pioneer in public transport, its railway and tramway network was the envy and admiration of the world until after WWII. Was the network dismantled? Why?

Amazing that they can keep the ferry so still whilst it is sitting in water so that the rails inside the ship line up perfectly with the rails on the quayside.

Aligning the tracks both vertically and horizontally would be tricky!

    • @dinogalanti3246

On the quayside there's a structure like a sort of giant "fennel" V shaped that leads and keeps the bow of the ship in the correct position.
This method was first used for freight trains in 1899 and for passenger trains in 1901.

Took the Rome to Palermo route last year. Brilliant. We had a day in Rome with a nice evening meal then took the train. Slept and travelled, so no time wasted. The 3 berth cabins were all sold out, so the 4 berth meant I had to share. Crossing the Messina straits at dawn was special. Just remember to take some food and drink as breakfast is limited. Clean, efficient, and on time. Do it before they build the bridge between the mainland and Sicily.

I really enjoyed the video, thumbs up!
That is the trip I wished for years, a train ride to Sicily. For now I never had the chance to do it, so thank you for, in some way, letting us experience your journey.
It's quite sad and perhaps unexpected to read how much you enjoy this train and how much you consider it useful and comfortable, since here in Italy almost everyone would prefer to take an airplane and Trenitalia cut almost every night train. Btw, until a few years ago you could go from north to Sicily, now only north to Calabria or Rome to Sicily. If you want to go from, say, Milano to Siracusa, you'd need to change train or take an airplane, choosing between a change in the middle of the night (if the first train has no delay!) or wasting an entire day.
Didn't know your channel, now I'm waiting for the next video! See you soon :)

The only complaint I had while using the trains in Italy was the lack of handicapped accommodation. My husband has difficulty walking and there were countless times when to cross from one track to the other you had to go down stairs with luggage and then up stairs to the platform. No ramps, no elevators that were working at Roma Termini. This was 2017z

They put the train on a ship! What a hoot. I made this run from Rome to Sicily last fall en route to the Aeolian Islands and found that the train-ship-train connection to Sicily isn't widely known even among Italians. An unscientific sampling of several Italian friends about how trains make the watery crossing produced i dunnos and a tunnel among the answers. One of my best experiences in traveling around Italy has been crossing the Strait of Messina aboard a train that's aboard a huge ferry. Regarding the Intercity Notte, I had vaguely heard about it and your report fills in the gaps about how it works. Thanks for this great vlog.

For Info They seem to have improved the rolling stock a bit since I used it in 2016 , the Excelsior cabins were getting a bit tired and the incorporated shower and toilet had a distinct drain smell.
However the journey was excellent , on time and when booked early very cheap , worked out at about 85 euros each for two cabins four people , there is no restaurant car so take your own food .
You can not beat the early morning crossing across the straights .
I believe only one of the services has the Excelsior cabins on , but that may have changed now .
Italian Railways are excellent , they have problems like all Railways but its a far more civilised way to travel , the very fast trains with all the different classes are recommended.

Hey there, really love your train reports.
I notice that you really love overnight trains. Well, I do to (travelled the Amsterdam - Munich EuroNight a couple of times). However, I don't really consider them the future of sustainable travel, like I feel you do. For example. If I would like to go from Amsterdam to Spain I could:
Take Thalys to Paris-Nord, then take a subway to Montparnasse and take the TGV to Hendaye. At Hendaye I could take the Metrorail to San Sebástian. It would take me about 12 hours and cost me € 80,-
Why would I take the more expensive overnight train? If this gets me to Spain in one day?

The Intercity Night 35551 is the diverted of InterCity Night 1529. The first one goes via Formia and stops there and in my city (Latina), the 1529 doesn’t. I hope I can take this train when I will go to Sicily. Anyways, Nice trip reporting!👍

Quel beau trajet.

The Deluxe coaches were originally built for CIWL... so they should be pretty nice.

I've been on two overnight trains from Paris to Rome chaperoning two school trips. I found the crew totally missing. No one came to help us set up the sheets. This was particularly problematic for the lower bunk which needs to somehow be pulled out a bit. No freebies, in a couchette with 6 beds.
