Thank you for this - my friends and I are planning a one-month trip to Italy in 2022 and I think one of our side trips will be this train (or the sleeper) from Napoli to Catania/Siracusa - your video has given us lots of great information!
Thank you for a splendid review. That is the way I will go to and from Sicily ! Trenitalia Inter City trains are excellent, and I will have great fun in planning my trip. Many thanks indeed.
I had two choices to use going from Catania to Naples next month - Ryanair or Intercity. Intercity it will be! Just booked my ticket :) Thanks for the video
Amazing train trip! About the Messina bridge: they have been talking about building it since the roman times (2000 years ago) but never happend. Other projects were done in the XIX century by the "Borbone", the dominators of Sicily at that time (tunnel, bridge, ecc) but they didn't do. During the '900 a company was founded (Stretto di Messina S.p.A.) with the purpose of building a bridge. After a huge sequence of bureaucracy and many past governments, the project was approved and the works began around 2010. They had already begun construction of the pylons and excavations for the motorway ramps but the global economic crisis that hit Europe in 2011 led to the interruption of the works by the "Monti" government. The Stretto di Messina S.p.A. Company was dismantled and a lot of money were lost. The debate is still ongoing and is very popular. Many sicilians (and calabrian, but also the whole southern Italy) feel cheated by the Italian state and are furious because they have been waiting for tens of years (the lack of a bridge and high-speed rail continues to cause serious delays in economic development), but the company is gone and therefore the possibilities of building the bridge are reduced to a minimum at the present stage. One of the problems of the construction of the bridge is the danger of crossing an area with strong seismicity (which caused catastrophic earthquakes such as that of Messina in 1908, the most serious documented disaster in the history of Europe, with over 200,000 deaths) in addition to the fact that the area is crossed by strong sea currents and that the seabed is very deep and this implies the construction of very deep pylons, besides the fact that it would be the longest suspension bridge in the world (its tower would be around 400 meters high). According to the engineers, these problems were solved in the design phase. The problem remains a political one. Some politicians had proposed the financing of the bridge in the European Recovery Plan (as it would be located along the route of the TEN N.5 Helsinki-Valletta corridor) but the idea was discarded at the last moment. It is likely that the bridge will never be built in the near future, so crossing the train by ferry will remain the standard service (as far as the train is concerned). 😐
sorry, but construction works of the brigde never started, nor in 2010 neither before or after, in any of both shores. I don't know where did you find that info...
Such an awesome trip report and what a beautiful scenery! Looking forward to having your opinion on the Trieste-Venice Intercity service, which I took a couple of times since I'm living close to Trieste 😀
My husband and I are currently planning a trip from Sicily to Napels and then onto Rome. We were planning just driving/direct flight but the cost was going up and up. After seeing you video... I think we may have a winner lol - Thank you!
Thank you, nonstop eurotrip! So this is one of your videos that I prefer from your channel! How pure a dream! A train, a boat, a train in a boat! More than a dream, a reality !!! I love it. In addition, exciting historical and geographic information, as well as beautiful views, dot your video. You film very well. Tell me, are you sure you don't want to live near an active volcano? The house doesn't have to be expensive there.
A few years ago I took the ICE TD from Copenhagen to Hamburg via the ferry Rødby-Puttgarden. It was a 45 minutes ferry ride. A very great experience with isn't possible anymore.
Great video! I meant to do this on the sleeper from Milan to Catania last year. Had flights, trenitalia tickets, everything. Then of course everything went crazy so it’s been put on hold.
Very nice train route so much coastal scenery and historic buildings in Italy also the scenes from the train ferry the locomotive carriages seating does look a bit like clothing material but still very nice bet that air con was well needed during the hot summer temperature and also I wouldn't live near to an active volcano either
I love the added photos of the locations you visited, it adds something to the trip report (to be honest, many train videos look a bit the same, so it's nice to see something different).
Have you done a report on Sardinian railways? Stayed at the northern part of Sardinia (Porto Torres) for a few days in September 2018; the railway "system" round there (and Sardinia in general) is interesting to say the least
Greetings from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil! I really liked your video and the pictures from Sicily are very beautiful. The transport of the train on a ferry is really cool and interesting, excellent logistical work. As for the thieves on the ferries... well... where in the world are there no thieves? In Brazil there is no lack of them... of all kinds.
Fascinating trip! What an adventure and experience. What made me laugh @10.00 is the stare you received from the rail staff 😆 Love to do this trip one day 🇬🇧
Ciao very nice coverage! Keep doing that :) Btw a bridge might improve drastically the situation. I just hope when it will happen, they will choose the best design, the most appealing, paired with the best structural system. I wish so. In the meanwhile, Sicily will always remain an island so there will be still a time for the romance of traveling even by ferries. Big hug
I think that if there is one thing menacing the existence of those ferries it's not the chance to have a bridge in the future, but the existence of affordable flights from all Italy. From Milan to Sicily it has always less sense to spend a lot of hours on a sleeper train if there are plenty of flights from Milan to 4 different Sicilian airports. It can make sense if it's a summer-holiday and it's a family traveling on a budget, with children, lots of luggage and with a destination far from the Sicilian airports. And it's a similar situation from Rome...
Did you know with thunderstorms throughout Italy the InterCity Night 794 (Reggio Calabria - Turin) can accumulate up to 30 hours late? The current record is 27 hours late
Looks like a cool journey! I am contemplating taking this train from Naples to Palermo but confused what side to book seats on as its unclear if the train car goes forwards or backwards. In first class on your journey the single seats were on the right, which is opposite of the map on the ticket site. I hate going backwards, and also I would like to be on the side with the view!!
There used to be train ferries running between the UK and the Continent before the Channel Tunnel, including the Night Ferry sleeper service from London Victoria to Paris or Brussels. If I had a time machine...
The point is that the railway leading to Noto, Pozzallo, Ragusa and Gela, just below Siracusa, is a disgrace. You could take as much as 5 hours for covering 80 km. I travelled northbound from Catania to Messina and it was quite fast. And the E464 locomotive that you had, it's InterCity version is only in Sicily, as in the rest of Italy (except Sardinia, where the railway is all unelectrified) they are used for regional services only
@@NonstopEurotrip the point is that the disgraceful railway between Siracusa and Gela is the closest one to Malta, where I live. If I have to travel to Sicily I'll consider the flight to Catania or taking the ferry and a bus, which will be undoubtedly faster than by train.

Haha, you could get the train the following day and arrive sooner 🤣
the previous record was 25 hours in 1922, which was why Mussolini took power.
That simply is not true. I might happened once as an exceptional case, but it is not a common event.

Are the seats reserved in Intercity second class or you can sit in any coach and seat after buying a ticket?
Reservations are compulsory 🎫
was there a cafe on board?
Only on the boat
I think 2-2 seating arrangement is the worst ever because we don't get enough leg space if all the seats are occupied.
Yeah, I prefer 2 seats airline style 😎
