  • Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, concludes his seminar in Italy by reminding us about some fundamental principles of Karate. All katas are different, however the basic concepts of movement remain valid across all styles of Karate. We should always avoid being stiff and training with our mouth closed. Muscles should always be relaxed and we should "expand" our attacks (i.e., not contract our muscles at the end of techniques) to maximise their effectiveness. In a self-defence situation, there is no room for mistakes: if our techniques are not effective in causing damage to the opponent, then we expose ourselves to the risk of being attacked. We should not forget that "Kata is martial art".
