    Well the Duramax has a curve ball for you in that you cannot just zip the mounting bolts off like you can a sbc 350, there is a different strategy involved that I'll show you in this video. Other than that installing a starter on a Duramax is a pretty easy process. Installed on my 2001 LB7 Duramax GMC Sierra 3500 Crew Cab Long Bed Dually.

    I’m getting ready to do this. Best video I found. Complete job, camera angles, lighting all show the reality. 9:14 is when I normally start cussing the design engineers.

      Thank you for that Steve. You hit the nail right on the head. I try to paint as realistic of a picture as I can so everyone knows what they are getting into beforehand. There are quite a few jobs I probably would have forgone if I knew better! haha. 🍻

    Just completed putting a starter in my 2002 GMC 3500. Thank you for the info. You were correct about the bottom bolt and I really appreciate the tips. Other than running to the store for another extension it went flawlessly.

    By far the most realistic rendition of a genuine PITA job. Just finished my CP3 and am so friggin' ecstatic about the upcoming pleasure of changing out my starter. Great video! Thanks..

      PITA to the max Rudolpho! I bet that CP3 was a beast to get too. I wanted to do mine while I was doing injectors but I'll be a son of a gun if injectors, head gaskets, studs and all the little odds and ends that goes into a head & turbo rebuild with port and polish didn't drain the bank account as it was at the time. Good luck with the starter man, it'll be easier than the CP3 at least 🍻

      @@KooshdaakaaGarage Definitely the right time to do the starter. After the pump crucible-the starter replacement was petty simple. There are a lot of videos out there but unlike your video- these guys just set the camera up and rarely ever show the demands that will be made of your arms and fingertips. There's just something magic about watching someone else showing you all of the contorted positions and delicate 1/4 thread finger snugging that there is to look forward to I guess mutual witnessed misery breeds confidence. Enjoy your week and a sincere thanks.

      Lol, you ain't kidding! May there be no bolt unturned, no part left broken, and no truck left to fall into perdition whilst we can still hold a wrench in hand... I think we have a new mantra for the channel 😬🍻 a zero emissions duramax is a diamond in the rough as far as I'm concerned for my application.

    I just replaced mine and have 2 key points to add. The first is, be careful with the exhaust band clamp. If the nut feels froze and won't come off, cut it off. I broke the threaded shaft behind the nut and spent $70 for a new clamp. Not cheap! Also, if the starter is grinding, chances are the flywheel is damaged which takes out the teeth on the starter. In that case, replace them both or your on borrowed time.

    2008 I did my bottom bolt without removing skid plate. Cut a 15mm wrench short, broke it free. Loosened 2nd exhaust hanger had enough room.

    $140.00 that's not overly outrageous. I was wondering, as I too have a Duramax.
    Merry Christmas

    Hey bud I'm getting a drip from the bottom starter bolt it looks like would that be rear Mai seal or starter seal ? Thanks

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  Год назад

      Oil drip? I have a bad rear main seal and it drips from the bell housing. I could see that trickling by the starter though. Also you might check your turbo oil return. Sometimes those gaskets go bad

      @@KooshdaakaaGarage My Niece just bought an '02 2500 HD crew cab short bed 4x4 and the beddix/drive in the starter is weak. I think we're going to have the starter rebuilt and the drive replaced and go from there.

    I didn't have to mess with my exhaust at all on my 2wd 2500HD, came out easy. And you ain't lying about that cheater pipe, when I was breaking the flexplate bolts loose it took everything I had with a long 1/2 breaker bar AND the cheater pipe. I'm not a small guy at 6' 250 either, those mfers are just tight. And there's 8 of the bastards.

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  2 года назад +1

      No messing with the exhaust? You must be Hudini 😆 nice work though because it was kicking my butt until I removed that one piece. I think I've used the jack handles more for cheater bars than for it's intended use. Lol. What did ole Red Green say? If the women don't find ya handsome they should at least find ya handy. Cheers 🍻

    • @GrandPrix46
      @GrandPrix46 2 года назад +2

      @@KooshdaakaaGarage that's actually exactly what I had to do, use the upper handle of my Craftsman 3 ton jack as a cheater bar, lol (my real cheater pipes were too long to use under the truck). 2wd has its benefits, I have a gaping hole where your passenger side halfshaft is at.
      Did it all from underneath, had the truck up on 4 ramps for the flexplate job, lowered the starter first then disconnected the wires. Installed the same way, hooked up the wires, slid it in place, 3/8" ratchet w/extensions to tighten the bolts. I was contemplating doing the starter just to do it, but changed my mind when I saw how easy it is to do.

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  2 года назад +1

      Man that flex plate job does not sound fun in the least unless the engine was out of the truck 😳 bet that was one tight squeeze after another. Did you go with a billet flex plate?

    • @GrandPrix46
      @GrandPrix46 2 года назад

      @@KooshdaakaaGarage yeah, billet Socal Diesel flexplate from Dmaxstore, didn't want that ever breaking again, lol. Really wasn't a bad job, pulling the trans is surprisingly easy. Get the crossmember out of the way, lower the trans down, and you can easily get all the bellhousing bolts from behind the trans with extensions. Didn't mess with the exhaust at all, and just tied the driveshaft up out of the way. Trans was able to slide back far enough so it stayed under the truck the whole time.
      If you ever have to do the rear main, and have the extra coin, it's well worth the upgrade.

      The flexplate teeth are likely chewed up. Remove the starter and bar the gear over and inspect those teeth. If the flexplate teeth are missing some notches it will eat every starter you put on it
      My LB7 had similar symptoms and i didnt figure it out until I was pulling the transmission out to overhaul my block
