  • Transarctica (or Arctic Baron) is a 1993 computer game made by the French company Silmarils for the Amiga and ported to the PC, Atari ST, Macintosh and Atari Falcon.
    The story is based on the post-apocalyptic science fiction novel series La Compagnie des glaces by the French writer Georges-Jean Arnaud.
    In the 21st century, mankind is being ravaged by the greenhouse effect. A last-ditch effort to counteract it is designed and executed. It works far too well.
    Centuries if not millennia later, the planet is entirely covered in a thick, opaque cloud layer. Giant wolf packs roam the frozen wastes, and the mammoth has re-emerged from the elephant stock. Mankind ekes out a living in a few handfuls of settlements, connected by a network of massive armored trains. The network in turn is in the hands of the gargantuan Viking Union, which is merciless towards threats to its power. A few radicals, though, are willing to attempt a change, and managing to hijack a train of the Union, the Transarctica, they set out in search of the "sun".
    This longplay was played using the Amiga AGA version and contains all major story elements of Transarctica like the information cities, the mammoth cemetery, Urga, Oslo etc.
    If you intend to play the game yourself, here are a few tips (some may only work with the Amiga AGA version):
    1. Tenders can be replaced. It is a widespread misinformation that it is impossible to replace tenders. Transarctica lets you carry up to six tenders, but that is referring to six intact tenders. Yes, you cannot get rid of destroyed tenders, but as soon as you lose tenders you can purchase new ones wherever they're available.
    2. Nevertheless, it's better to avoid losing any tenders, as this might cause a bug in the game, where after a battle your lignite amount will be replaced with the amount you recovered from the enemy.
    3. Your missile launcher will be available , even if it gets destroyed in a battle, or at a station. Use it as cannon fodder ;)
    4. Cities to sell your stuff at a high price:
    Amsterdam - Fur
    Paris - Caviar
    London - Antiques
    Kiev - Meat
    Athens - Fishing Rods
    5. A nice bug during train battles. Destroy the enemy's engine and lure the enemy soldiers onto the remainings. Wait until they gathered in a nice line on the front of the train. Sometimes, when all of them arrived, they will freeze and never move again, even when attacked, so you can just blast them away with TNT
    6. Having trouble winning a train fight? No problem. Always save your game right before you run into an enemy train. If you cannot defeat it, just reload your saved game, and you will end up with a different train as they are randomly generated.
    7. You only need to destroy the Chernobyl NPP once. Various sources on the internet claim, that you need to destroy three specific locations of the power plant. As you can see in this longplay, I finish the game by destroying only one of the reactors.
    8. Sometimes you might run into an invincible horde of wolves. They will kill half of your soldiers and slaves, but won't go away. I'm guessing, that this is somehow related to the copy protection of the game, and there is nothing you can do about this. Save your progress as often as possible, but if the wolves appear at a track that you have to take to finish the game, you're screwed. You can try to play the untouched Amiga 500 SPS version of the game and use a scan of the manual for the copy protection questions. The SPS version and the manual are available at archive.org

    Probably one of my top 3 favorite games of all time (and I played over thousands of them of many genres) and probably one of very first ones that I played as a kid (I watched it being played when I was like 5 yo). One revolutionary classic that never got to be remastered unfortunately (like HD-ed and all that), forgotten jewel I would say. Damn. I would easily pay 50$ for this game if remake was made nowadays. So many memories, such a great story, atmosphere and mechanics.

    I forgot about "La Compagnie des glaces", so the main thing who came to my mind was the Snowpiercer comic...
    French people really liked trains and ecological commentary in the 1980s, isn't it?

  • @yopachi
    @yopachi 4 года назад +7

    Thank you so much for sharing without commentary! Watched my childhood friend play this on PC. Why did you only use the guy on the right to shovel coal? I like the concept and atmosphere. I like the realism. You had to be careful or your boiler would explode.

      You have two types of coal, anthracite for your engine and lignite as money. With the left guy you would literally burn your money. You should only do this as a last resort if you run out of anthracite.

    • @mattx5499
      @mattx5499 7 месяцев назад +3

      It has similar concept, but probably both things are based on different sources. The game was really cool. Probably one of the most original strategy games of all time. The only flaw people were complaining about was tedious combat system. Train battle was quite slow. The graphics and artworks were fucking epic. Maybe updated version addressing the combat system would be freaking good. Such kind of retrofuturistic strategy games need to come back. There are too many fantasy and space themed games in the genre and not many ones with some postapocalyptic ideas.

      @@halthammerzeit I don't mean you cannot play it. But you cannot progress if you don't know what the goal is. It is the same case as Starblade. I played it for days, visiting many planets, but never got any clue about what to do with the plot (turns out now we found out you had to find a secret planet in the middle of the galaxy).

      Games back then like this were slower for the more intelligent amongst us. It is essentially similar to Civilization or Pirates. Early 90s games are still unsurpassed in quality. People had different mindsets back then and it reflected in art and computer games design.
