I think the issue when it comes to comics being "woke" is less about politics being in comics period and more how the politics are handled.
ie. Hamfisted political messages that puts story and enjoy on the backburner vs political/moral messages that are melded into the story without taking away the fun of the story.
As for diversity, as a gay black guy, I think adding more unique and interesting characters is fine but it feels especially with Marvel and DC like it's done for spectacle and publicity then genuinely adding diverse characters

    • @corvistein9016
      @corvistein9016 Год назад +2

I hard agree with you on this. Cause even though I think you definitely did get some hamfisted messages put into comics, I think you got quite alot of stories that handled those messages with tact and left your audience wondering with food for thought then just telling them what is right or wrong.
As for diversity It honestly feels like they parade around minorities and talk a bunch about diversity and inclusion and when a lot of those measures are just race swapping or changing the sexuality or gender of a character. It's honestly made me have a lot of appreciation for minority characters that are well done like cyborg, static and pretty most of the Owl House cast. Cause they feel like people I can route for.

Actually, I think the biggest reason is the most obvious, and I'm surprised you didn't mention it (unless I spaced out) - Anime. The entire point of anime is to advertise the mangas for the most part, they're usually a 1:1 adaptation, so if you liked the anime and want to see more, you can jump right into the Manga. But with comics and their movie adaptations, it seems like there's barely been any push to get those who liked the movies to get into the comics, and the movies are usually loose adaptations anyway, not to mention (as you said) each writers tone can be completely different than what you were hoping when watching the films.
Frankly, I find the failure of comics during the superhero movie boom to be one of the largest marketing and business mistakes ever - a level of incompetence that needs to be examined at a later date and held up as a shining example of 'how not to capitalise on a situation' - a business failure comparable to the failure of New Coke.
Otherwise, yeah, totally agree with all your other points as well.

One additional point why I prefer Mangas over western comics is the art style. Yes, it really depends on the artist and nowadays many manga artist tend to have a similar style. But lets have a look on Demon slayer. I didn't buy them because it is a cool story. I prefer to watch shonen because of the fights. But the art style is similar to ancient Japanese drawings, especially the way body parts are drawn. I can't find something like that in western comics.

    And Also Answer Fan's Questions..
But Then for DC they do Have alot of Great Comics like The Killing Joke by Alan Moore or Batman Year One by Frank Miller, but DC wants to make a Unwanted sequel like the three Jokers story, (Because DC had to put in That Jokers Wife Had Faked her death in the killing Joke origin of joker, Although It was Clear that the Two Mobster's had Killed her) and Alan Moore was Betrayed by DC... because they made a sequel comic and a crossover comic (Which is the Doomsday Clock) which Alan Moore responded "Watchmen was suppose to be a one time thing for its story".

And not just random statement said by The MC or the Enemy their fighting.

Short answer: because recently manga has just been better
Right now apart from a select few comics just aren't the same as they used to be, inconsistency, failing to adapt to newer times, lack of originality and just a lack of people that care about them anymore
Whereas manga is pretty straight forward, constantly adapting (so much that if a series underperforms it gets cancelled to make space for new, better and more unique series), abundance of originality and right now with manga being at its peak of popularity there are enough people that care enough to buy them
It's pretty easy to see why manga is outperforming comics rn

Manga is not at its peak of popularity. it reached its peak back in the 1990s. When shounen Jump manga sold more manga in a week than DC and Marvel did in a year.
Since then manga really hasn't blown up like it did when it was the 90s. There is more competition out now. Indie comics, The boys, invincible, MCU, DCEU, smart phones, manwha (webtoons),etc. If anything western comics are becoming irrelevant and being replaced by manga, manga isn't at its peak, its just taking away western comic audiences.

Yes this is exactly why I can't stand comics in west. Sometimes a cartoon comes out and takes the best stuff from comics and places them in miniseries format. That is when I can get into it. But the idea that I should have to research the order something must be read in is just extra work. I should not have to do that. It should be as simple as this is the timeline and this is the universe the timeline is in, and here are the shows. Each show takes place somewhere in the timeline and when you look at the timeline it all comes together to make sense. Manga allows you to get into a series from the beginning much easier. Hopefully the way western comics are done is in line with manga in future. Although I like comics in general I prefer the way japan does it. The western way is designed so that you hopefully end up searching for back issues and hunting for missed issues and then piecing it all together. But as I said that takes work. Why should I do that? Just make it simple.

I think it is because there is a more variety of direct animated adaptations of manga, which draws people to read the manga between seasons or to finish out the series. But, with comics there's not really that many animated adaptations with them going more the live action route, which leads to feeling much more disconnected from the comic material so provides less incentive to read them.
At least that's what led to me checking out manga and reading more manga after watching anime. While with comics there's not really been that many that leads me to want to read about them. Like I'll enjoy some Marvel or DC movie, but the live action adaptation doesn't draw me to read the comics. And doesn't really feel like there's that much variety in animated comics either compared to anime.

I'd say the poltics angel is about wether or not there's nuance or if it directly tries to preach to you. Lots of people seem to confuse this with not wanting politics. So here I'll put the monkey wrench on everyone else back. If a religous writer practically shoved their version of salvation and morals and religion into sections of the book and dialogue wouldn't you be sort of annoyed? And then imagine if waves of books do it. Imagine if a character like dare devil that is clearly catholic adopts a different religion out of nowhere and his character changes. We'd be annoyed right? This is a change in a character thag didn't need to happen. Perhaps are loss of faith could make a compelling plot with characters but see that's a compelling nuanced idea. And now change the terms of religion to politics and now that's why people get annoyed. It's often the most in your face thing so naturally it draws more eyes. Although I agree with all the points here that also say why because they also factor into it. But the truth is that if they were stronger in other areas most people would tolerate it I think. They aren't and so most people are left with "well why would I buy this?" And I can't blame people for feeling that way.

    • @commentarytalk1446

"I'd say the poltics angel is about wether or not there's nuance or if it directly tries to preach to you. Lots of people seem to confuse this with not wanting politics."
It's fundamentally PROPAGANDA because it IS political agenda masquerading as story or comic etc.
That is also why people hate it so much, the same way that regimes such as communism or 3rd reik also produced blatant propaganda and ruined the culture of those times and nations.
In point of fact, stories don't have to have politics in the same way they don't have to have religion or any other given topic. Eg a Manga could be just about the experience of an adventure to fire the imagination of a young child to entertain them.
The nuance angle is an attempt to convince that ALL cultural mediums MUST have politics in the same fallacy that in an ultra-orthodox nation of some religion, ALL/EVERYTHING MUST be about that religion which is in fact obsession + madness.
Yes if a story is doing politics, then that is abstracted to create either: Allegory (Animal Farm), Satire (Karmen America Volume 1) or Polemic (Battle Royale (more social commentary than politics but it will do).
If for example comic writers wanted to do a gay superhero they could invent a new person but instead they wanted to use Superman and then insert their "The Message" (The drinker's coinage with echoing) which is then turning the comic into delivery platform for propaganda. This is an example only of the description. I'm sure a gay comic character can be done very well eg in Manga or some other source.

And most of these have an anime, so you watch the first few episodes or so to get feel of the series before you dive deeper in the manga. And in terms manga, the ones that are finished are - Dr. Stone. Parasyte. Dorohedoro, Pluto, and Chainsaw Man. (Technically.) Happy Reading.

Reading older manga is still easier to do and cheaper. Same with watching old anime.

  • @ben99ny69
    @ben99ny69 Год назад

Well, there is some disadvantage of manga
    1. Its expensive. Each volume cost 10-15 dollars. And majority of popular series have over 20 or 30 or even 50 volumes. There are cheaper ways to collect like box set (although not many get those) and omnibuses but some people don't like them.
    2. Manga is always OOS. Because there are so many volumes of a series, you can never just simply order all of the volumes at once. Some to most of the volumes are always OOS. And its infrequent when they do restock. For example, i love the call of the night anime so i decided to buy the manga. After i put in my order i find out that a couple of the volumes wont restock until december.
    3. Manga can go OOP. There's manga that you would want that simply too old or not popular that ends up getting OOP. And GOOD LUCK trying to find them in the second hand market cause, not only do they scalp OOS manga, but increase the price of OOP manga way too much. For example, to get all the singles of gantz (37 volumes) you probably need to spend 1000 dollars.
    4. Legally speaking, its probably easier to read comics. There isn't many ways to read the manga you want to unless you purchase the physical manga or buy them online. There is an app but it doesn't have everything you would want to read.

Imo, manga is just comics essentially perfected. All the genres you could dream of, easy continuity, usually a single story writer so it stays consistent.
Comics changes hands so much and also don’t understand that a story just needs to end sometimes. Soul Eater and Fire Force can be enjoyed separately but if you want to enjoy them as a continuity, you can.
Manga does need a better work environment for their authors though

The confusion is real. I'll give Spider-Man as an example. I quit after One More Day and Brand New Day. Thank god! Because holy hell it got even weirder. So apparently Spider-Man returned to his super science roots... then I quit reading and tried to return years later and... Doc Ock's mind got into Peter's body and now he's Spider-Man? And I think that's been reversed... WTF?!?!?!
You can't just leap back in. It's too much of a mess.
And if you think that's bad... X-Men. I love the Chris Claremont run. Now? I have no f'ing idea what's going on and I don't want to spend a million hours figuring it out.
I'd go to manga, but when I do it's usually not to my taste. The popular ones are too trope laden, predictable, and repetitive to me. I couldn't just jump into Dragonball or Naruto now. It's also too much and more of the same. And I don't know where to start for something more to my taste. So I guess I got nothing.
I'd love to see western comics go back to more consistency. Try not to tie into a too confusing universe and make crossovers special again. Have an art and writing team stay together on a title for multiple years. Look at Chris Claremont and John Byrne's work (or just Claremont in general). Best X-Men run ever, spanned multiple decades.

I would recommend One Piece, but that's a daunting task for newcomers. So instead, I say maybe something like Radiant would be a story you would enjoy. Very whimsical and fantasy like. As well with having many bits and pieces of European mythical tales and creatures as a part of story, lore, locations, and characters. And not too many chapters or volumes too worry about. I know it sounds like shameless plugging, but the last video I made was a comprehensive guide and review on Radiant. So check that out for more details.
If you're looking for a little bit more action, but still keeping the mythical element to it. Record of Ragnork is a massive tournament of Mythical Gods and Well-Known Figures in history, battling for survival.
Black Clover would a be mix of the two. Leaning more for action.
Berserk is the father of Dark Fantasy manga. You could check that out. If that's too extreme or edgy for your liking, Claymore, a sister like series, is very similar, but not as extreme.
Dorohedoro is a rather bizarre take on the idea of fantasy. Being a bit more grimmer and unpredictable.
That's just the first five that come to mind, check those out if you haven't heard of them before.
