With most ISP in Germany you usually get a basic modem like shown in this video with limited functionality (both hardware- and software-wise, e.g. a cheapo Technicolor one) but you can rent a better one for 5€ per month that has far better functionality and would cost ~160€ on the market (in the case of Fritz!Box FRITZ!Box 6490 Cable from AVM), if a new model comes out you get automatically upgraded too. Also it's pretty new here in Germany that you are even allowed (enforced by law now) to buy a router yourself (like the 160€ from above) and have the ISP allow it to connect into their network. PS: There's a cheaper model that is still better than the one provided for free for ~80€ on the market but my ISP claims it's incompatible (doesn't provide enough channels, although technically the provided channels are enough for the bandwith I pay for).
I tried to do this but my ISP wouldn't provide configuration information for it. The only way to use my own modem was to pay them a $300 service call and setup fee. I've been fighting them over it for that last 2 years with no success. Unfortunately there aren't any other viable broadband solutions where I live unless I'm willing to go down to 10Mb from a couple of less reliable providers and pay more than I do for 50 from my current provider. That's a fairly easy choice to make. Plus, part of the rental fee covers replacing it if it fails instead of having to buy a new one. Considering I've had mine replaced in a 12 month period it's worth it to pay the rental fee. I am still open to getting my own if the price is right and I can get it configured for a reasonable price.
Now that is a fair country! Just in case, make sure they don't start charging you after 1 year, mine was also free for the first 12 months, and then they snuck in the fee.
lmao thats greedy fom isp. in vietnam there are many isp and all of them gave out free modem when you use their service. i was using one yhen switch to another then go back again now i have 3 modems
Router is something else. If you mean Google WiFi, you still need to connect it to a Modem. In my setup I have it linked as: ISP--MODEM--ROUTER--ALL PCs. You can have Modem+Router in one, but then it is harder to upgrade only one
Tech Guy Lol. I meant Google wifi. My internet provider only charges for the wifi router. But if I only want the modem without wifi, its free. I just need to buy Googles wifi.

Won't save anything as you get free on a one year contract in the rep of Ireland

Nice. Though I'm switching to the Google router.

kousaka san Ah, OK. Is there a reason you prefer Google WiFi insted of other established brands in this space?
Tech Guy Google makes stuff that just works. I don't want setup hassles and incompatibility issues.
