Hi Emily - Absolutely beautiful. It makes 2 people happy at the same time. May the sun always shine on your face, and the wind always blow on your back, Ted
i work at a grocery store and a girl came in and wanted to apply for a job, and she asked me for help. she was deaf. it had never hurt me so much to lack comunication with someone, so i decided to start learing asl and i still am. i never know what will happen tomorrow, and i might need it :)
Kc Shuaipi we have a close family friend that we've known since we were little. My mom grew up with the mother and I grew up with her son. The mother is deaf and it hurts to not be able to communicate with her. I have recently got interested in PSE so hopefully I can start to communicate with her more. :) Her son will hopefully help me, since he's had to learn it fluently in order to talk to his mom.
When I was a cashier, I had a woman come in who I believe was deaf/hh, or possibly could hear but not speak. She gestured to me showing she had 2 croissants in her bakery bag. I rung up the order and made sure to face her whenever I had a question and when I told her the total. At the end, she signed thank you, and I signed you're welcome right back. I'll never forget the way her face lit up throughout our interaction. Learning ASL and learning about Deaf/hh is so rewarding, for both hearing and deaf people!
"I had a woman come in who I believe was deaf/hh, or possibly could hear but not speak" Masey, you really need to go back to school, or you're going to be ringing up, sorry, runging up orders for the rest of your life.
This is so inspiring! I've been learning ASL in hopes of talking to a deaf customer we have at the comic book shop. He doesn't know it yet, but I'm so excited to be able to finally talk to him properly.
I felt this same way talking to people at my retail jobs, through ASL. The look of surprise and joy on some of my customer’s faces was priceless and worth everything in the world to me.
I learnt sign lenguage so I could comunicate with a friend in highschool. He had cancer and some serious conditions so he passed away. I still fell sad about it and I cried when a deaf person signed me for directions on the street and was impressed that I knew sign lenguage. I felt that my friend helped me to help others with their problems. I hope you're in the place you deserve Tyler, thanks for everything. Till we meet again.
I learned Polish so I could speak to a girl who kept coming to my store. She didn’t speak a word of English and didn’t know how to ask for things. I’m with her now. Don’t know how it happened.
Lol because he’s signing already. The note and what he says is literally the whole story so the news team doesn’t “waste money” on transcribing this video.
@@AshantiLuvMe What about the barista girl? Or the off screen interviewer? It's not only the deaf man thy need to understand. And not every deaf or heard of hearing person knows ASL.

As a former interpreter I will caution you on the ‘help’ part of your post. If you want to ‘facilitate’ communication between Hearing and Deaf people, go for it. You will find that it is a very mixed bag littered with obstacles you cannot yet fathom and only realize once you’re ‘in.’ Help, as you say, is viewed as paternalistic in the Deaf Community. Best of luck should you pursue this vocation. It is extremely difficult and not for everyone, especially ‘helpers.’ Sorry if it seems harsh, it’s just the reality and I don’t want you to rush into something with an attitude that the Deaf Community will rebuke.
"surprised my reaguler customer" "i just have perfect it first i am not perfect at it but good enough for now" Heck, you can barely speak English, forget about ASL.

I will never go back to Starbucks again. When I was working on an ambulance about a year ago, myself, my partner and two police officers were drinking our coffees and talking, A barista came over to us and told us we had to leave because we were scaring the other people. Starbucks will never get my business again. That being said this lady was awesome. I commend her for doing that one little thing, it made his day and that’s exactly how it should be.
I was shopping at a local Walmart and was trying to find a product, so I asked a stocker that I happened upon just down the aisle. He held up one finger and proceeded to walk away. I didn't know he was deaf so I just figured he might have been shy and waited for him to come back, which he did with someone who was able to help. I took a stab at 'Maybe he's deaf, but I know how to say 'thank you',' so I approached him again and did the sign for 'thank you'. His eyes lit up and he smiled and said 'you're welcome' back. I have made time and learned a couple more signs since this interaction for the next time if I ever happened to cross paths with someone who is deaf so I can at least say 'hi' to them or comment on the weather.
okay so yeah, im crying. ASL is far from easy, and she went WAY out of her way to make her deaf patron feel exactly the same as every other customer. thank God for people like this.

It's nice to know that customer service is not a forgotten art. She went the extra mile to provide excellent customer service to her hearing impaired customer. She didn't have to do it but because she did she will be greatly rewarded if not on that job but in her life in general
When I use to work retail we had a family come in that was deaf and one of the girls called for assistance and I came up front to help and she was “can you help them? I don’t understand them they don’t speak English”. I greeted them and used what little asl I knew which was just abcs and thank you. I helped them find the items they were looking for and made sure they were okay before heading back to my department. The smiles on their faces is not something I’ll ever forget and while my asl is still a little rusty it doesn’t hurt to have as like any other language it helps someone feel apart of the world or included then it’s all the more reason to learn
"Sometimes customer service gets a bad rep, and it's often well deserved" Did you have to include that? Mostly it's customers who give *us* a hard time. Other than that, that barista is one awesome, inspiring person and deserves a promotion!
I worked as a receptionist and Spanish tutor at my college before quarantine, and I noticed one guy with hearing aids never interacted or responded much to my "Good morning! How are you?" with a big smile and wave, so I decided to learn basic signs to say, "Hi! How are you?" I will probably never see him again since it was the last day before school went online, but it was really sweet to see his face light up when I literally spoke, well, signed, his language. I also now have a sign name! It's a mix of the letter A and the sign for Film. Language is amazing.

I learned Spanish just for a few regulars I used to have at Walgreens. But my manager said I wasn't allowed to speak Spanish to them since I'm "not Hispanic, which could offend the customers." LMAO I quit like a week later
God bless your heart❤️💞 for doing this. You have no idea how much this means. I'm 51, my parents, aunt & uncle are deaf from birth. I speak fluent ASL since childhood. I have found myself in many situations where I've acted as an interpreter for deaf people in daily situations. One thing, with everyone wearing 😷 these days, deaf people who read lips cannot do that anymore & it is has become another communication barrier😩😢 Thank you again! 🙏❤️💞🤟🤟🤟
My sister is deaf and I can sign but she has cochlear implants so she can hear but whenever I meet someone who can only sign I always sign back to the best of my ability, sometimes I can’t sign certain things so I always apologise but it makes them smile when I sign back, even if some of it means absolutely nothing at all.
That interpreter was amazing as well. I didn't understand everything the man was trying to say, only a few words. But he made it sound so genuine & not like the man was being interpreted.
Awesome! This just says she cares about her customers and a heart. Kudos to this young lady. May the same karma follow her thru out her life. Thank you and have a wonderful life. 😊💕
When I used to work at my local Game/ computer store, a young girl came in one day. I did the normal can help you with anything today talk and she tapped her ear to say I’m deaf. I know a little bit of sign language and asked her is there something you are looking for and she wrote a small note saying I’m looking for Call Of Duty on the PS3. I showed her the game and she thanked me. Her dad even thanked me as well for being nice and understanding with her. As he told me that in the past nobody wants to know her or even try to help. I don’t work there anymore but I still do see them occasionally when I go into the store.
G60J60F80 or atleast be an option in highschools, only some highschools give asl classes but sadly mine doesn’t i wish i could learn it’s just hard finding resources to learn
I did exactly this when I managed a liquor store. I had a deaf couple who would come in and get a bottle of wine every once in a while. It felt wrong to have to use a notepad to communicate so I learned basic asl. The look on their faces when I started signing made every sleepless night of practice worth it. That feeling and seeing them smile was worth a million bucks. They were shocked and thanked me profusely. What took me 3/4 weeks made an impression that will last a lifetime. It’s important to be kind to those around you and this was something I felt I needed to do. I enjoy when I can make others smile
I struggle with learning languages, even my own, but I learned enough ASL to help customers and be able to communicate with my ex’s brother, who was disabled. He told hilarious jokes. I still miss learning and talking with him, and I hope to learn more and more.
I worked for a hard ware store in Berkeley California many years ago. The location wasn't far from where a school for the deaf used to be and many people that still lived in the area where deaf. I can't say this was the only reason, but it absolutely gave me the motivation to learn sign language. I still don't consider myself very good at it, but I can not tell you how often that small step has helped me with customer relations in the decades since. I encourage everyone to learn another language, be it sign, Spanish, English, or whatever. Expand your horizons.
Watching this and reading other people's comments on here with how they're learning ASL to do their service job also inspires me to learn. I'm a nurse and I have deaf patients occassionally so this would be so nice to know how to communicate better with them too. 🙂
I found this video while teaching myself some simple signs for when people come into my Chipotle. I know it might be a little easier for deaf people to point at what they want but I'm not satisfied not knowing how to communicate, answer questions, ask them how they are doing.. I only knew "thank you" but now I'm expanding my asl vocabulary. I never want to have to ask someone to write down their order because I can't understand them. So glad I'm not the only one and motivates me more to continue to learn seeing how happy it made this man :)
I learned sign language when I became an infant teacher it made it so easy to communicate with them and applying what I learned to people who are deaf that was a such a beautiful thing she did and he was so happy
I think that's really cool and sweet of her. With that same level of focus and dilligence, she could do a whole lot better than just working at Starbucks.
I hope the boss and employees are very proud of her and keep her in a kind enviroment because she is definitelly worth it. I always have some little extra chitchat with my customers at the bookstore, say every piece of coins e.t.c i take out of a blind customers wallet and even give them their money back so that they can feel the coins on their hands and see that im not lying to them. Sadly, i dont feel valued for the stuff i do and i hope this young woman does. I think if you have such a position, these are things you should always do and i do think Sign language should be teached in school.
Love that he saved the note
I love that he framed it. 🥰
When I saw it in its frame, that's when the tears spilled over.
Yes. Agreed.
And framed it
Great story but kind of pathetic that CBS didn't caption this video so that Deaf people can have "the same experience as everyone else."
A deaf person's tv would already be programmed with captions.
Yes, as long as they watched this story at airtime. If they weren't able to watch it "live," sorry, out of luck!

Awesome! This just says she cares about her customers and a heart. Kudos to this young lady. May the same karma follow her thru out her life. Thank you and have a wonderful life. 😊💕
Crystal u have a beautiful heart to care so much about your customer. God bless you
She is a very beautiful young woman who actually cares about people. I really wish more people like her.
Give that barista reward and a pay raise
She deserves a raise for goin above and beyond
She’s a true gem!! Way to go, girl!! Thank you for what you did and what you are doing. You are going to go so far!
I love stories like this one. I love the beauty of sign language. It's one of the most beautiful languages to watch.....
This world needs ppl like her in it!!!
Amazing person going further to help someone. Same goes for the people in the comments who have done the same. Y'all are incredible.
“... but because kindness is who they are.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Be love. Be kind. See God ❤️
ASL should be a required core class for K through 12.
Indeed, plenty of useless classes that they can get rid of cause we'll never use them after school
Honestly
Only learned the alphabet in sign language when I was in kindergarten
G60J60F80 or atleast be an option in highschools, only some highschools give asl classes but sadly mine doesn’t i wish i could learn it’s just hard finding resources to learn
That's awesome, she is so thoughtful kind and compassionate
I did exactly this when I managed a liquor store. I had a deaf couple who would come in and get a bottle of wine every once in a while. It felt wrong to have to use a notepad to communicate so I learned basic asl. The look on their faces when I started signing made every sleepless night of practice worth it. That feeling and seeing them smile was worth a million bucks. They were shocked and thanked me profusely. What took me 3/4 weeks made an impression that will last a lifetime. It’s important to be kind to those around you and this was something I felt I needed to do. I enjoy when I can make others smile
Thats "Dedication", not just for her job, for her life, she's getting out of her confort zone.. That's just awesome...
Now that's what it is all about. Great job to the young lady for doing a awesome jester.
the worker went above and beyond what was required,, God bless her !!
I struggle with learning languages, even my own, but I learned enough ASL to help customers and be able to communicate with my ex’s brother, who was disabled. He told hilarious jokes. I still miss learning and talking with him, and I hope to learn more and more.
Nice meeting you my love
This video is about sign language for the deaf community, yet there are *no captions*
I like that she cares about her costumers to learn learn how to do asl. That is so kind of her.
This is just a simple act of kindness that we all can do on a daily basis. Smile 😊
Watching this and reading other people's comments on here with how they're learning ASL to do their service job also inspires me to learn. I'm a nurse and I have deaf patients occassionally so this would be so nice to know how to communicate better with them too. 🙂
I want to learn ASL so bad, I have always been interested. It is amazing when you're able ro community with others in different ways. ❤
I love how her coworker looks at her proud
As a former partner of Starbucks of over 10 years is one of the best acts of kindness I have ever seen. Starbucks should be acknowledging her!
What a beautiful person this lady is
I found this video while teaching myself some simple signs for when people come into my Chipotle.
That is so kind! Good girl !
Nice meeting you my love
I think that's really cool and sweet of her. With that same level of focus and dilligence, she could do a whole lot better than just working at Starbucks.
As a student who is halfway through their ASL 101 course, this inspired me to go as far as I can in learning the language.
when theres no captions in a video about ASL and Deafness
my heart is happy ❤❤❤
Beautiful action by a person with a kind heart.
It's good to see there are still Kind People in the World!!!
To think about someone else and put in time and effort purely for them to have a better day is some everyday superhero stuff. Kudos to you.
I've just came across this video. Wow it is Very touching. It is good to know and feel that people know that you exist and care about you
I'm learning how to sign because not only am I passionate about it but because everyone deserves an amazing experience
