Vicki's deadpan, ticked-off delivery sold the final punchline! Fans of the show will remember how her character in the recurring Family sketches was the crotchety old Mama, Carol's character's mother, although Vicki was 16 years younger. Here, Carol is 45, Vicki is 29, and it's the show's last season in 1978. The two enjoyed a long friendship, starting when a 17-year-old Vicki sent Carol a fan letter, and Carol decided to cast the teen as her younger sister on the show, in 1967 after Vicki turned 18. Now aged 90 and 74 respectively, these two great ladies will always be lovingly remembered by the fans.

This is kind of a bittersweet thing to watch. My mother loved that show, and that bit was her all-time favorite T.V. Moments. She loved to tell people about it. In fact, that was the last thing she ever did. She was in the hospital recovering from a major heart attack. My brother and a family friend were visiting her and she was talking about that skit. When she finished the story, she laid back and she was gone. It hurt to see her go, but a few months later I was discussing her passing with a coworker and I said, "she finished her story and then she was gone." There's just something beautiful about that realization and the fact that this was the last story she wanted to tell.

Not just in the immediate, but the culture and the times that people live in. Compared to today, the seventies were a more innocent time and there was a place for this kind of humor. However and quite unfortunately, we live in a much different world today. As a result, humor, which to a large degree exists as a form of relief from stressful circumstances, has also changed dramatically and there is very little place for this more innocent form of comedy.

One of the greatest 5 minutes in history of TV. I have watched this 1,000 times and I laugh each time. Conway starts talking the dwarf & his elephant lover. Carol is like OMG! He's doing it again! VanDyke is trashed from the start. So they struggle reset. Then off he goes again w/ the Siamese elephant stuff, Carol his toast, Van Dyke is trashed. I could be dying of cancer and I still laugh!

She almost loses it a couple times in this one. You can see her clutching her hands and knees trying to force composure. Which she does quite quickly but still he almost had her too. But to turn all that tension he had built up back in his face like she did.. that was next level and you can tell Tim loved every second.

This is wonderful. Tim was known for this superb improvisational stuff, so I think he collapsed because he thought he was the one in control of the situation, and when Vicky reacted perfectly in character with a perfect putdown, it iced his comedy cake! :-)

I love the way Conway paced his narrative. He was watching to see Carol recover and start to ask her question of Momma when he would hit her with the next line forcing her to stop again. I remember seeing this on TV as a child and it is still one of the funniest stories ever shown on television. People will still be laughing at this 50 years from now, a fitting tribute to Tim Conway and the cast of the show.

I love this story for two reasons:
    1) Vicki's final line, breaking up Tim and Dick and Carol (Carol was already broken up, but still) is one of the funniest moments in TV history, right up there with "As god is my witness I thought turkeys could fly!", "What does a yellow light mean?", and "I had this dream where I was an innkeeper in Vermont!"
    2) I have slayed by repeating Tim's elephant story. It still lays 'em in the aisles, decades later.

Why can't comedy be this good again? Why do we as viewers have to suffer through the most atrocious "comedy" today where EVERYTHING has to be some perverted (how many wiener or muff jokes do "writers" have to have to get a laugh?), sick, toilet humor? This is why The Carol Burnett Show is such a cherished classic. This was the best of the best in sketch comedy and shows the level of talent that we will NEVER see again. Carol, Vicki, Tim, and Harvey are legends amongst legends! I'm sad that Tim and Harvey are gone, but we all can still enjoy this great show and laugh until we cry! 🙂
