My dad lived his entire life in this situation with my mother.
That is the reason I'm never going to get married. When my mom asks me why won't I get married, I tell her because I don't want to put up with some woman through the same toxicity that my dad had to put up with her.

I wish we had more scenes with Mr. McAllister. He's easily one of my favorite characters.
If I was Mandy and really spiteful I would have said "ok, since your so embarrassed to let the whole world know what happened I'll solve the problem for you and that with my family now. So you got what you want you don't have to see me, or Georgie or my baby again."
Why would anyone be spiteful here? Those actions were looked down upon in the conservative spaces in the 1980's. If her Mom doesn't want to ruin her social circle/repute, it's fine that she tells a small lie. Why would you want your Mom to go through unnecessary drama? Her daughter can tell her own circle whatever she wants.
