Thanks for watching, friends! We love these little clips, what do you think?! Comment below.
Thanks for all the helpful tips, Ben watching the last few weeks, just got into fly fishing and ask you videos are all helpful
I’ve been using them for years now and love them, but I have only found one size, do you sell multiple sizes?
Henry Henry Yes. Link in description.
Mad River Outfitters thank you I’ll order some
Hi all the guys at MRO. the videos are very useful. These clips are a copy of those made by mustad, which have been around for a long time. The mustad ones are cheaper and you get 25 in a pack.
I have taken up fly fishing at the age of 69. This one simple tip is transforming my fishing from frustrating to highly enjoyable. Early stage cataracts are now not a problem. Nice one buddy!
Happy it could help. Welcome to the sport and thanks for watching!
I like this not just for the fact of saving Tippett. But being able to change streamers super fast will be awesome
recipe 4 recovery For sure another benefit.
I haven’t fly-fished for around 50 years, and can remember when we had to painfully tie our own tapered leaders... Using “blood” knots to connect progressively-smaller diameter mono (there were suggested weights and lengths) down to your final diameter. The introduction of factory-made tapered leaders was a godsend. At my age (73), I find SEEING the fine tippet and tiny hook loops difficult enough... Looks like these clips are a must-buy.
They are a big help to many. Thanks for being here.
Thanks Brian, This will be real helpful as I'm one of the fly fishers with a tremor and poor eyesight.
Glad to help. Stay tuned.
Hi, my name is Andreas and I live in Heidelberg (Germany). I would like to express my appreciation here. I have seen all your videos, and I am always happy when a new video comes. Since I do not speak English very well, it is particularly valuable if the questions are displayed in writing. Please continue to do so much, very good posts. tight lines
Appreciate you being here! Stay tuned, much more to come.
did you used to fish the Nagold with some americans dave, terry...?
I just recently stumbled across your channel. I've been fishing all of my life, but never fly fishing, yet I've always been intrigued by it. Thanks to your channel, you are teaching me a different world of fishing and I can't wait to continue to learn about it. Thank you!
Thanks for being here! Honored to help. Stay tuned!!!
Brian,
You and I had a rather lengthy conversation about these and you didn’t seem to think much of them because you said you had no problem seeing and tying knots. I’m glad you followed up with a video. At the time (8/26/19) the clips would not show up on your website when doing a search. The gentleman I spoke to at MRO said he would try to get it fixed. I’m hoping it has been resolved as I plan to place an order soon.
Best Regards,
MM
There are links in the video description to take you right to them on the website. Selling like hotcakes here today so all set.
I've used fly clips this year, since I started back fly fishing after a 32 year break. I swear by them. That along with a 10 foot hand made furled leaders with a 5-6 foot tippet. The presentation is awesome.
Cool. Thanks for sharing and for watching.
Hand made furled leader?
I have fly clips in my tackle box, and have kept some there as long as I can remember. We used the clips back when my dad first taught me to fly fish over 50 years ago. I had not heard about the twists and will have to get some.
They are great for larger flies!!! We'd be happy to send you some.
I want to learn fly fishing so bad, but I don't even know what half these words referred to.. 😳 watching all your content. Thanks much guys I appreciate your effort at schooling us.
Watch this series and it should help out:

@@Madriveroutfitters just watched them all this morning with my boy. Thanks
I was glad I found this video I have been using the clips for years and I have never seen anyone else doing it I mostly fish for Bass and they work great.
Thanks for being here. Yes, they are great for bass.
You just cleared something I've Been wondering about for ages about yousing normal leader line instead of a fly leader thank you very much you explained it well
Happy to help and thanks for watching.
This is a LITERAL life saver! Thanks Brian!
Thanks for watching.
Please share how it literally saved your life. Sounds interesting. ;-)
@@unionse7en I'd like to hear that story too!!
@@kaargh6924 there was this one time he was fishing, and he saved about 10 mins all together in swapping flies. Then he drove home. At home, he saw on the tv news that on the intersection he was at earlier, there was a huge accident, involving multiple cars, 10 mins after he passed it. If he woulda been there 10 mins later, cause of tying instead of swapping, he would have been in that accident. Idk.. It can LITERALLY save someones life. lol
Literally?
I am brand new to fly fishing and I am absolutely in love with the sport. This video has saved me a ton of time. I dont mind tying each fly as I go, I've actually gotten pretty quick at it. However, this is very convenient!! Thank you!
Thanks for watching and please stay tuned.
From personal experience the clips are excellent for those of us who have fine motor skill issues and I've been using clips now for about 35yrs. The only criticism I have is that I loose a lot of flies with the pinch clip. The twist clip though Iv'e never lost a fly with. so there is my review for what it's worth. Thank you for sharing so freely your knowledge and experience really appreciate it.
Thanks for sharing and thanks for being here.
I found these when i was 16 at Kmart. I hated them for dry fly as it weighed them down, but for a streamer i loved them as they added a touch of weight.
Cool! Thanks for watching.
@@Madriveroutfitters i was not aware of a fly fishing shop here in ohio and only a hour away... looks like I’ll stop in soon!
ice fishing too! very good when you dont want to hang around for long at -20C without glove trying to tie a good knot each time you change lure. just snip snap and its done. it also permit the lure to move freely and its godly for jigging.
Thanks for the input!
I love using both those clips on all the spinners I make and buy as well along with the ultra light crankbaits I use for trout and panfish.
Thank you again for your tips.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for making these videos! I'm still new to fly fishing and I really appreciate your tutorials and sharing your vast knowledge! Thank you Brian!
Thanks for being here and please stay tuned.
Here in Brazil it's pretty standard to use clips when baitcasting and/or Fly Fishing. Most commonly the lock snaps. It just saves a lot of time, saves your leader and you'll be able to walk around carrying only a small box of flies/lures and a single fishing rod.
Exactly. That's the idea. Thanks for sharing and hope all is well in Brazil. We hope to be there soon.
I've been looking at these on the shelves and was always hesitant about putting something like that in front of a fly. Thanks for the good information like always!
Thanks for watching.
Going to have to try those I often wondered about that
They can be a very helpful item.
just watched this video, and i was realy stuned, the sympathetic fellow who pops up and says wauw, he is a belgian singer who was kind of fameous and colorful figure over here, its a smal world after al folks:-)
Thanks for being here.
I've been looking for something like this. I feel like I send more time putting a new fly on than fishing. Thanks!
Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for producing these videos. I have gone from fly fishing strictly grayling to pike and now lake trout.
Thanks for watching.
Great video as always. Love the series.
I only use the fast clips on my titanium wire for (big) pike fishing. And sometime for the occasion bass that comes around.
Keep up the great work and tight lines 🎣
Greeting from the Netherlands.
john wagtho Thanks for watching.
I saw these Amazon and was interested but wasn't sure about them. Thanks for the info!
Better to buy them from a real fly shop eh? Thanks for watching.
@@Madriveroutfitters They just came across my feed, I wondered if they were for trout fishing. You answered that, so I wont be in the market for them.
Thanks a ton! I recently came across those clips and was wondering the same thing. Being pretty new to fly fishing, your videos have been extremely helpful navigating the rather large learning curve, and I appreciate your humor as well! Thanks again!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Brian. I love the clips. I have all three sizes also, but mostly just use the small ones. Impressively strong. On one of my rods, my set up is strictly a dropped set up and the clips totally changes the game. Thanks as always for your vids
😁
Thanks for watching. Happy to help.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Brian! It really helps me out! I have 1940s Oren- O-Matic fly reel I want to try out! I wonder in your next video for attaching a flyline could you bring it in closer so I can see it! Thanks Brian!
Thanks for watching and feel free to call or e-mail Brian directly. He’s always happy to help.
Hi Brian, hate to disappoint you but in the UK we use straight tip it anything from 9 foot to 20 foot to present a team of flies on Stillwater. Regards John
Think of how much better your casting could be if you used a proper leader!
I asked this question before and forgot to send it in via email
Glad it’s getting answered now!
Thanks for watching!
I'm new to fly fishing and going to go for Bass and bluegill soon. This would be super handy! I had no idea these existed for fly fishing.
I had my first successful day in a small pond (occasionally stocked) with a trout and a pretty good sized catfish! I've officially caught the bug, and partly due to your awesome videos! Thanks a bunch!
Kevin B These are great in certain situations. Thanks for being here and please stay tuned.
MRO and RIO i have hand tremors and have pretty much given up on fly fishing because I couldn't tie a decent knot. Stay safe!
Hope this helps a bunch! Stay tuned.
Those clips are great for streamers. Tying a loop knot when changing streamers is total pain in the neck. When I started fly fishing (on a budget) I couldn’t afford tapered leaders so at the time most of us made our own by knotting together 30 lb, 15 lb 10lb and 6lb. for instance. Blood knots used are small and hold well. Best way I know of on the cheap. That said you can get tapered leaders these days that are pretty inexpensive.
Still better to tie your own but make sure you are focusing on stiffness and diameter and not the lb test.
Thanks for the informative video. I really like the fly clips for streamers as opposed to tying a loop knot. I’ve just become a fan!
They work that's for sure.
Thanks again. Everything I needed to know, and then some! BTW, nice touch at 1:28!
Thanks for watching!!!
Had this very same question. So glad this video popped up. Will be looking at your website for them. Thanks Brian!
Glad to help. Stay tuned.
You guys are great and the editing for your vids is awesome 😂
Thanks so much. We appreciate that.
Just ordered some fly clips! Have wished for a long time that had something like the swivel snaps used in pole fishing. Thanks
Thanks for watching and thanks for the support.

Love this video. I got some of those little clips in a combo starter pack and had no idea what they were for. Now i do. I love your channel!
Glad to help. Stay tuned.
This is great information,... I need to order some of these., Some times in the Summer I go from dry flies to Poppers
Happy to help. Thanks for watching.
I've had the same question for years. Thank you, Thank you.
Thanks for being here.
When I travel to Ontario to fish for trophy smallmouth, there is always the chance my flies may get slammed and stolen by a passing northern pike, so I often use bite wire. To avoid having to constantly re-tie the wire, I set up the wire with a loop at the end with a small cross-lock snap. I used fly snaps the first year and found that the heavy leaders and large fish were pretty rough on them. Most of them ended up at least deformed, if not almost straightened. The cross-locks bore the strain much better.
Thanks for watching.
I use these clips for streamers and Lures when trolling in my kayak for trout. Makes it easy to change to something different without retying.
Agreed. Thanks for being here.
You know I was basically waiting for this video before buying some quick change clips. I got some cheap ones a while back and they were AWFUL. Off to the store to get some Rios!
Plenty in stock. Will look for the order!!! Thanks for the support.
As a beginner I love your videos
Thanks so much.
I remember these clips from many years ago (early 80"s). Question: I like to fly fish a lot for bluegill (top water) with foam spiders or tiny poppers. Will the extra metal (and weight) drag them under?
Thanks for watching. Should not drag them under. Feel free to call or e-mail the shop directly though if they can clarify further.
Great video for us old folks!
Thanks for watching.
I have been using Rio Tipit rings. Helps also.
Certainly can. Thanks for sharing.
I love it. Do it right or don't do it at all.
Always.
Snaps are a good idea, and I've used them in the past, but not without cons. Changing fly in cold weather becomes a pain, literally. I've not lost flies on the cast before using these snaps.
Thanks for watching.
I think this is awesome just what I plan on using as it’s getting harder for my finger to be nimble you know all thumbs
Glad to be of service!
Thanks but he kept saying sunfish, bass, and saltwater species, so I assumed it was too big for trout flys, thank you so much! I love your videos so much!
Can be used on any fly that you want. Maybe that's what he uses them for? Feel free to call him or e-mail him at the shop if any further questions.
@Madriveroutfitters I have a bunch of small trout flies that these won't work on. Their to big in diameter. I have bigger flies for lake fishing which work fine. Great for changing lures though. I'll let you guys know how it goes at Eagle Nest Lake in New Mexico in a couple weeks.
This is what I was wondering and you answered it yea I’m ordering some now
Thanks for watching and for the support.
I always enjoy your videos. I don't think that you want to use those clips when dry fly fishing for trout.
David Rosset Correct. As stated.
Brian and MRO crew, thanks for another great video! Do the clips add weight to the point that they affect floating flies, such as the poppers and sliders? Also, what was the red and white fly that you attached to the twist clip toward the end of the video? I look forward to the Clouser rod that just shipped from you guys today, and finishing it off with the BVK SD when they are available next month. Keep up the amazing work.
Not usually but wouldn't use them on smaller dries. Poppers and such they are fine. That looks like a Blanton's Whistler Fly but you'd have to check with Brian to be sure. He would know. Send him an e-mail and he'll confirm.
Awesome. Thank you.
wow this channel is so great I didn't even realize it was in Ohio this is going to help me so much thank you
We are in fact based in Columbus, Ohio. Glad you are enjoying.
Saw the clips on wish app and was sure it was a junk scam no way iit would work. But after your video i think I will give the official Rio clips a try because i fish for bass in lakes and towards the evening it gets hard to see to tie new flys on. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching. We'll look for the order and thanks for the support.
Nah im local I will stop in next time im up that way. If your sold out I will order them then. :)
It actually starts at 4:20. You are welcome. To the host: not sure all the reading of letters adds much value, especially several minutes worth. Going thru the mail is not the reason I watch your videos. Thanks for the great learning you share.
Thanks but you are free to not watch the Q & A Series. That's kinda the whole concept of them.
Yes this is exactly what I’ve needed
Glad to help.
Thought about using these but not sure how well they would work with nymphs or dry flies. Plus your limited to size 16 and up.
Not typically recommended for trout flies, especially dry.
I was about to ask what tippets were but i scrolled and it was the first video 👀
Thanks for being here and always be sure to check with the shop with your questions. They are the ones that can help.
When we are fishing for striped bass in California delta we use 4 feet of 10 or 15 pound mono. Casting 4" TO 6" Clouser minnows or jigs that have enough weight to turn leader over. Stripers are not leader shy.
But what is the diameter and stiffness? The lb test has nothing to do with it.
@@Madriveroutfitters whatever is in the drawer. This is not finesse fishing, Cast 80 feet to the levee and rip it back as fast as you can. Most fish in 2 to 5 pound with occasional 20 plus.
John Keagy If you would speak English it would help all of us to understand what you are trying to say. Thanks.
Very cool! Thanks for this!
Thanks for watching.
this is awesome thank you for the no clip tip

Enjoyed vid on fly clips.also i find tippit rings.
Thanks for watching.
Great video thanks as always!!
Thanks for watching.
I'm very new to fly fishing. Definitely use your channel as my main teacher. The fly clips are sort of equivalent to the snap swivels for easy change out on spinner lures on spin reels. They save a ton of time but I find the snap swivels really mess with the presentation of the spinner so don't use them. I'm wondering if the fly clip also can mess with or alter the presentation of the fly when you do stripping? I love the time saver but curious if the fly clips hinders the fly presentation. Thank you.
Thanks for watching. Best to contact the shop with questions like that. You can give a call or e-mail and they will be happy to help.
So I'm guessing this clip is not for trout. Rocky Mountain national park trout, or will they work? Picky trout so wondering if the clip will scare them away?
Not usually recommended/needed for trout fishing but you can certainly try if you like.
I have used swivels with clips for years on my spun cast setup, always thinking I was probably loosing fish because the site of the clips was probably scaring fish away. When I first saw the fly fishing clips I was sure they would be a bad idea for the same reason. Maybe knot, see what I did there!
Thanks for watching. If the hook doesn't scare them, the clip certainly won't.
Thanks! I will check these clips out.
James Dunn Big help to many!
😱 i do on a double handed fly rod when using tube flys, it’s a short leader rather than long
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video...what sizes do they come in?
Scott Cohen Link in the description?
Hi Brian I'm just getting back into fly fishing after 15 years I've went through alot of leader trying different flies around lakes and streams in WA state. I was wondering do the fly clips and twist clips work good for trout fishing in lakes and streams too? cause in your video you say more for pike or musky.
You can certainly give them a try!
Thanks as always for great tips!

What about the barrel swivel clips?
A review coming on those as well. Stay tuned.
Can you use them for trout fishing
Sure. You can.
Love your video & explanation on Fly Clips. My question is can you use the fly clip for size 18, 20, & 22 & if so what would you recomend for fly clip size ? Thanks for your response !
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions over to the shop as he suggests here and they will be happy to help. You can e-mail or call them direct.
How well do these clips work with dry flies? Do they add to much weight and make the flies sink or not to bad??
Thanks
Yes, they do add weight and are best for sinking flies or streamers.
I found that using tippet rings for everything other than fishing drys saves a bundle by negating the need to cut into the tapered leader.
Certainly can do that! Thanks for being here.
I like your glasses how they magnet Together

@madriveroutfitters they work great for hand/arm amputees as well
Very true.
You sold it to me at butter !
It's the butter that usually seals the deal.
I use 5x for river trout and this seeems like a great solution for quick changes. What size would you recommend for dry flies for trout? Or is this more of a sinker only application?
The size recommendations are listed on the product descriptions on our website. Feel free to contact the shop directly with any further questions. Thanks.
I was shamed for using them. I have some from the '50s. I'm over the shame and will tye one tomorrow.
There should be no shame in fly fishing. Fish how you want to!!!!
Are these relevant in the dry fly world? Or are they going to affect the flotation too much?
@@Numl0k Pretty sure he addresses this in the video? If not, feel free to give him a call. He’s always happy to help!
Ok great now I have something else I need to order !!!
No....not need. It's all want here.
Because I severe arthritis in my hands I have trouble tying knots. These sound great but what about for trout. I live in Virginia and don’t get many opportunities to trout fish unless I go back to my home state of Colorado. Also are these okay for droppers such as a nymph under a dry fly. I’ve had guided trips and it’s usually a good size caddis with a nymph on a dropper.
Give it a try. Sounds like the benfits will outweigh for you.
Just watched this video and was curious if you had a way to save tippet and leader lengths when you are fishing size 20 and 24 flies like we use on the gold medal parts of the San Juan river. These giant trout see so many flies all day long the bigger stuff does not work! Thanks!!
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions over to the shop and they will be happy to help.
What's the trick to the fly clips..I need to use a huge amount of force (for me ;) ) to take them off and on...any tips

I use these and they make changing flies so much easier . Do you think they may put fish off ?
Pretty sure he would not make a video if he thought that. Feel free to contact him at the shop though if you need further clarification.
I see how these could work for bass and bluegill etc. But do you think these would deter trout? I'm guessing so.
Not usually but you’ll have to try them and see.
@@Madriveroutfitters Thanks so much
Beginner question.....can these rio clips be used for dry flies?
Can be used for virtually any fly that you want.
How would the twist clip work with trout?
Evan Matthew You’d want to have a fly on there too.
