I REALLY appreciate your clear explanation of not only explaining the size of the tippets but also in pairing up which ones to use with what flies, helps me a lot. Some people have plenty of knowledge but are NOT teachers which creates a lot of fustration for all involved. You have the gift of teaching, Thanks. Just remember to bring your rain gear on your next trip. Lol
Just getting into fly fishing, been watching all your videos I can find, love the way you explain everything, learned so much from you and putting everything to use, loved the importance of leader and tippet, 70 is never to late to learn, God bless.
Hey Dan, your videos have helped me get back into fly fishing after a 5 year (at least) hiatus. Thanks for all the helpful info and tips! I'm now back to fishing at least once or twice a week (typically on my lunch breaks) and have even started to get my wife interested in fishing more.
Just got my first fly rod last night for my birthday and now I’m bingeing as much as I can today while I’m supposed to be working. Never heard of tippet before today. Haha. I need some!
I'm loving your videos Dan! My brother and I have been getting into fly fishing over the past year and your videos have helped us tremendously get started! Keep rocking and rolling.
Your explanation of leaders and tippets cleared up my confusion about what to use and when. At the store I get overwhelmed by all the choices and X’s. When I’m fishing and switching flies out I never thought about the effect of not matching the lines to what I was casting. I’ve been tying on my own tippet #4 mono from an old ultra light setup, but after seeing this I will invest some money and to do it correctly. My go to knot for joining lines is either a blood knot or double uni knot. I usually use a blood knot for the tippets, with my fat fingers and bad vision it’s the only one that I can manage on this thin line. I have tied the surgeons knot in the past, but don’t usually use it, is it a better knot for tippets? Thanks again great advice I’ll put into practice, now I need some fish to complete the rest of the process.
You bet! Thanks for watching and for the great comment. I think the knot boils down to preference - your choice knots will work just fine vs. the double surgeon. My dad taught me the knot I use way back in the day, and that's why I still use that knot exclusively myself.
That was a thorough, informative explanation. I thought I had the basics down but now I understand more of the "whys" of the leader, tippet selection. Thank you.
I just finished watching your video on casting. Honestly I have been fly fishing for a couple years. I have repeatedly had problems with my line snagging itself during my cast. In that video the way you explained it along with the tailing loop explanation fixed my issue I never realized I was powering through. I am now learning to relax my cast. Much improvement. Now onto this video. I really appreciate the great explanation of nylon vs fluorocarbon. This really made things clear to me on something that I wasn’t real clear on. I am now a new subscriber because you have a way with bringing it down to laymen levels. Thank you for these posts and keep them coming!
Glad it was helpful! I have a fly fishing club on my channel that takes a deeper dive in helping you improve in the sport. Feel free to have a look! Cheers! ruclips.net/channel/UCdLalR_ScgI_Tp05LTIvVqAjoin
Love your videos! I especially like how you continue to give tips, tricks, and guidance. So many of the videos I used to watch to learn more have all devolved into “watch me catch [insert fish name] at [insert location here]!” Thanks for the awesome videos!
I'm new at fly fishing and like to view videos like yours to enhance my skills. I am just coming out of the "two left hands" and "am I doing this right?" phases of learning fly fishing.
New to the fly world, spent the first 70 years of life on saltwater and lake fishing with spinners for bass etc. Old dog and new tricks.... Sure, hook me up with the tippet and leader set. P.S. love the videos, straight to the point with minimal bs. thanks
I fished all day yesterday and didn’t try any streamers because I thought I didn’t have the right leader and tippet. Now I definitely know I didn’t. Fun day but no fish. Not even a rise. Love your content, it’s been helpful as I’m learning. Keep it up.
Nice you got out there - I too had a rough outing this weekend as well. Glad this video was able to answer your questions and thank you for taking the time to watch!
Brand new to this type of fishing so I appreciate the great explanation of leader and tippet , I just bought rod and reel and need to get right leader, tippet and flies. Appreciate your videos
Yes leaders and tippet are very important! I used to do the normal mono leader instead of tapered....what a difference. Thats when I was 15 and teaching myself haha...I've come a long way..im 52 now.
Hi Dan lv just started fly fishing and it’s been frew watching your videos that’s gave me the inspiration to actually get out the house and go fly fishing!!
Dan: Thanks for the tips… 40 years fishing rivers, small lakes, and the Great Lakes mostly casting my entire life. Recently moved to Coastal North Carolina where I fish the ICW. I just purchased my second fly rod ever and am re-introducing myself to the art of fly fishing. Your video is going to help me enjoy the rivers that run through the Blue Ridge Mountains for rainbows and browns. Appreciate the guidance!
New to fly fishing and have learned a lot from your vids! Truly need to get comfortable with streamer fishing and need heavier tippet and leader! Thanks for the vid!
This was helpful. I was changing my tapered leader when it would get short. It makes sense to tie new line onto the tapered line so I won't go through a 3 pack so quickly
Excellent content, you presented it well. Old school here. The leader and tippet is the business end. When I was new to fly fishing, there was no internet, books and figure things out in your own. Today I enjoy building my own leaders. Perfection loop , blood knot, non slip loop knot and I’m in business. I enjoyed the video. I’m glad you touched base on the Mono floating and Fluorocarbon sinking. Many people forget that. Dry flys. Then mono helps it float. Streamers and getting down in the water column, do with Fluorocarbon. Great video Dan, hopefully it will reach many. 👍🎣
Hi Dan. I love your videos. I have been learning to fish with Project Healing Waters. I've been with them fornan year. For Christmas my daughter bought me a new set.up thank goodness with the help of dad. I have always been confused about leaders and tippet because the volunteers have always rigged my line. I am now ready to pursue my own interests in obtaining my own rigs and understanding the leader and tippet advantage. Please consider me for your set of leaders and tippet. Tight lines Dan. Steve J.
Hi Dan loved this video cleared up alot of the unknown on leader and tippet size i struggled with for years cut wait to get my new ffd5 rod i just ordered
Thank you for the great how to videos, I'm a beginner in this style of fishing. My late father taught us all we needed to know about fishing, but nothing about fly fishing. He always wanted to try it but never got the chance. That is the reason I'm trying to learn about fly fishing. Bought a cheap rod and reel of Amazon to start with the Classic Martin fly rod and a few flies it came with. Hopefully, by watching your videos, I can learn a few things and not look like a noob out there in the water. Lol. Keep doing what your doing , it's awesome to watch and learn from your videos. 💯👍
Hey Dan, just started getting into fly fishing and this helped out a ton! I bounce back and forth between Washington and Nevada a ton for work, Hoping to hook into a Lahontan at Pyramid someday.
Hello there! You should definitely carve out a couple of days or even just a day to go after those Lahontan Cutthroat trout - just look for the weather windows! Cheers!
Hi Dan, Great videos! I’ve been fly fishing for about 10 months & am loving it. Please keep the videos coming. I wish I watched your channel sooner to learn more. I will def keep the 5x,4x,& 3x in mind. I’m active duty army & used to live in WA but didn’t fish then & hope for my next assignment I can go to Alaska or travel back to PNW. Can you make some future videos on a bass fly fishing set up & salt later set up? Thank you, Sir.
Awesome! Thank you for your service and happy to have you part of my channel. I do a ton of tutorials and would be happy to cover some of your requests. Cheers and FISH-ON!!
Brand new to fly fishing and still waiting to get my gear. Love your content and have almost watched everything. Next payday I will be subscribing to your page for more content. Would love to get this as it will help me get started. Thank you for your videos and hope to be saying fish on soon!
Thank you so much for this great explanation... I started to fly fish a year ago and it's still a little overwhelming... but I sure love it, though.... I've hunted all my life and for the first time ever, I didn't even hit the woods once this year bc I was too busy checking out fishing holes...are you still doing the tippet/leader offer? I've been using 3 X so far and never tried the 4 and 5 versions... thank you for all you do to help us understand this amazing hobby... you're awesome!
Hey Dan. I loved the video. I've been using Cortland lines and leaders for nearly forty years. I've fished them for everything from trout to bonefish to salmon and in my humble opinion, they are the best. Fish on!
Thank you for that feedback Steven - I'll all-in with Cortland these days too and they really are a step up from all the rest. Thank you for taking the time to watch!
I just moved from south Florida to the mountains of NW Connecticut. I gave up offshore fishing for fly fishing. Your how to videos on gear, how to cast, and tippet and leader explanation have been very helpful. do you have anything on understanding what are the areas to look for when starting to fish? like current, fast or slow water, colder water or hotter water, rocks, deeper water or shallow water? anything would be helpful. Thanks
Thanks Eddie - local social media groups can be super helpful whether you are looking for lakes or streams in your local area. For me, it's just getting out there and exploring everything you listed and sometimes you'll come across a gem.
Thank you for making this video. I wasn't aware that Woolly Buggers need heavier line. Even though that makes a lot of sense. This tip will help me to use some of the Woolly Buggers I just bought.
I haven't used Cortland leaders before. I got a friend who only swears by Cortland products. Ive been making my own leaders lately as i've been mostly just fishing the sound for SRC but I would love to give these a try. Love the videos dude. Keep it real!
I'm getting back into Fly fishing after a long time away. Your shows have been a big help and are presented in an easy-to-understand way. Any future shows on New to Fly Fishing would be appreciated. I'm saltwater fishing now.
Thanks Mike - I do a ton of tutorials, just launched another on stillwater tactics for my membership group. That one should launch in about a week. Happy to help and glad you got back into fly fishing!
Dude your channel helped me ALOT! I mean I couldn’t catch a cold and now I’m catching fish not a ton of them but enough to keep my going back. I appreciate your channel! Fish on!
Thank you thank you for the simple explanations and for the specific recommendations! I was wondering about streamers though, when should I Switch my Rod weight From a five weight To something else, when throwing bigger streamers, What kind of streamers do you throw and what size?
My five weight can handle most streamers - I just have to adjust my casting technique to chuck the heavier flies. Typically I am using medium to large sized streamers and rarely have to pull out the streamer anvils. In those cases, I'm using a 7-weight fly rod. Cheers!
Hey there I’m a new sub from Scotland 🏴 😁 & new to fly fishing I’ve only been out half a dozen times & yet to catch I’ve always baited or spin fished for wild browns in my local rivers but now I want to get into fly fishing which I’ve tried a couple of times over the years but as I never caught anything & not having a clue what I was doing I quickly gave in but now I have everything I need ie proper chest waders & good wading boots a new rod & reel a net a great fly vest with a backpack attached & all the accessories I need ie Gink floating gel with the little holder to clip on to my vest I even got the powder version that dries & floats the flies a few reels of tippet a tippet holder for my vest snips pliers & a great selection of flies in a nice little 4 section fly box however I need to get a new braided loop as my cat mangled my current one & I want to try tapered leaders 🤷🏼♂️ I’ve just been using tippet to make my leaders but that can be expensive so I want to try a tapered leader I already cast ok but I believe I’ll be better using a T.L it’s taken me a few views of videos to try to work out which size X to use but after hearing you explain I now get it BUT I have a question 😳 I use an 8ft rod 4W & I’ll be using mostly size 14/16 flies so from listening to what you’ve said I think I’m best to go for a 4 X Tapered leader I’ll also buy a pack of 5X to use once I’ve gotten used to using the 4 X so my question is what length would you recommend I’ve only seen 7.5 ft 9ft 12ft + As I’ve got an 8ft rod I’m guessing I should get 9ft & maybe cut 6 inches off or should I just use the 9ft as it is 🤷🏼♂️ Sorry for that long comment I get carried away talking about fishing & I’m absolutely itching to get out to wet a line but the weather over here has been the strangest I’ve ever witnessed in my nearly 50 years we’ve had maybe 5 days of lovely blue sky & sunny with no clouds but too hot 🥵 then it’s rained so much for it being summer but now it seems to be easing up I want to get out take it easy & Tight lines ✌🏼💙🎣🏴👍🏼
Thanks for the info.....I'm trying to learn basic setup for salmon/steelhead. Should I use a tippet ring to attach tippet to leader or just surgeon's knot?
Typically - if I’m using streamers, tippet rings works great. If I’m placing a nymph or egg pattern under an indicator - I use a double surgeons. The tippet rings create a “hinge point” and can pose a challenge if you are nymphing for steelhead.

“The Devil is in the detail”. Your narration is second to none. Thanks for a great video!!
Thank you - I appreciate that. Cheers!

Happy to help!
Hey Dan! Thanks for your simple, concise, easy to understand explanations. Appreciate you!
Glad it was helpful and thank you too!
Very helpful information for new fly anglers! I understand these concepts well now but still enjoy viewing and bonus pro tips.

Love that! FISH-ON!!
The tippet surgeon's knot is really helpful for old eyes. Using mono for dry flies is new tome and makes good sense. Thank you....
Glad it was helpful!
How can mono be new to you for drys? Its the standard.

Great information for a new fly fisher
Glad it was helpful!
New to fly fishing and have learned a lot from your vids! Truly need to get comfortable with streamer fishing and need heavier tippet and leader! Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for another great video Dan!
3X indicator leader to 4X tippet ( micro swivel or tippet ring in between) is my go-to still water rig.
This was helpful. I was changing my tapered leader when it would get short. It makes sense to tie new line onto the tapered line so I won't go through a 3 pack so quickly

You bet, glad I could help!
I haven't used Cortland leaders before. I got a friend who only swears by Cortland products. Ive been making my own leaders lately as i've been mostly just fishing the sound for SRC but I would love to give these a try. Love the videos dude. Keep it real!
Thanks! Cortland is pretty rock solid and the fly lines are also top performing. Thanks for watching, I do appreciate it!
Good review Dan. Thank you.
No problem 👍
I'm getting back into Fly fishing after a long time away. Your shows have been a big help and are presented in an easy-to-understand way. Any future shows on New to Fly Fishing would be appreciated. I'm saltwater fishing now.
Thanks Mike - I do a ton of tutorials, just launched another on stillwater tactics for my membership group. That one should launch in about a week. Happy to help and glad you got back into fly fishing!
Another awesome video! You taught my something I didn’t know about tippet. Thanks🤘
Happy to help!
Cheers!
I typically use 4X or 5X for dry and wet flies. If I am using a sinking line with a steamer, I usually only use 4 to 6 feet of 10lb mono as a leader.
Always love your videos. Would love to run into you on one of your Central Washington/Eastern Washington trips. FISHON!
Thank you, I appreciate that! Just look for the really tall fly fisherman, that would be me :)) FISH-ON indeed!
Thanks for the tippet lesson
My pleasure Scott, thank you for being a part of the group!
Hey there I’m a new sub from Scotland 🏴 😁 & new to fly fishing I’ve only been out half a dozen times & yet to catch I’ve always baited or spin fished for wild browns in my local rivers but now I want to get into fly fishing which I’ve tried a couple of times over the years but as I never caught anything & not having a clue what I was doing I quickly gave in but now I have everything I need ie proper chest waders & good wading boots a new rod & reel a net a great fly vest with a backpack attached & all the accessories I need ie Gink floating gel with the little holder to clip on to my vest I even got the powder version that dries & floats the flies a few reels of tippet a tippet holder for my vest snips pliers & a great selection of flies in a nice little 4 section fly box however I need to get a new braided loop as my cat mangled my current one & I want to try tapered leaders 🤷🏼♂️ I’ve just been using tippet to make my leaders but that can be expensive so I want to try a tapered leader I already cast ok but I believe I’ll be better using a T.L it’s taken me a few views of videos to try to work out which size X to use but after hearing you explain I now get it BUT I have a question 😳 I use an 8ft rod 4W & I’ll be using mostly size 14/16 flies so from listening to what you’ve said I think I’m best to go for a 4 X Tapered leader I’ll also buy a pack of 5X to use once I’ve gotten used to using the 4 X so my question is what length would you recommend I’ve only seen 7.5 ft 9ft 12ft +
As I’ve got an 8ft rod I’m guessing I should get 9ft & maybe cut 6 inches off or should I just use the 9ft as it is 🤷🏼♂️ Sorry for that long comment I get carried away talking about fishing & I’m absolutely itching to get out to wet a line but the weather over here has been the strangest I’ve ever witnessed in my nearly 50 years we’ve had maybe 5 days of lovely blue sky & sunny with no clouds but too hot 🥵 then it’s rained so much for it being summer but now it seems to be easing up I want to get out take it easy & Tight lines ✌🏼💙🎣🏴👍🏼
Thanks for joining my channel! Look through my videos, I have many that cover what you are looking for. Cheers and FISH-ON!!
Great video - one of best explanations out there today. Thanks!
Wow, thanks!
Good info for beginners
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the info. Well presented.
Thanks!
Great information clearly presented.
Thanks!
class vid dan do you ever use fluro for lake fishing or always mono/nylon ?
I do use fluorocarbon when fishing lakes for toothy fish for sure :))
