    leaders are so expensive lol, you only get 1 use out of a leader since its only like 12ft, and they cost nearly 10 quid a pop, anyways great video!

    so for the newbie (me) with a 7'6" rod (3/4 wt), majority of my flies both dry and wet are size 14, the 4x would be basically the swiss army knife of leaders for most every day small stream trout?

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  Месяц назад

      Yup! 4x is a great all-around size for fishing trout

    great video!.Dan do you reccomend to go with fluorocarbon or mono? also can i fish a woolly bugger for example with mono?

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  16 дней назад

      I use both pretty regularly - mono (vinyl) for anything top water, flouro for droppers and streamers (flouro is more abrasive resistant, stretch resistant and some argue harder to see under water).

    So you don't have to match your leader size and tippet size to your line, rod and reel size??

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  3 месяца назад

      Leader and tippet are separate from your fly rod and reel size. Fly line should match up with the fly rod and the fly reel...then you can tie on any size tapered leader and tippet.

    • @jamesp57867
      @jamesp57867 3 месяца назад

      So the leaders and tippet should match the weight of the fly/lures right? Midges and Dry flies use 5x and go up depending on the lure?

    • @RaymondTusk74
      @RaymondTusk74 Месяц назад

      @@jamesp57867Most of the weight is in the hook, so you can use the hook size as your guide. Divide by *about* 4 and that’s your tippet size to turn it over really nicely. Aka a size 16 fly you could use 4X happily. A size 20 you could do 5X.
      There’s plenty of wiggle room to that idea, the longer I fish the more I just kind of know that I struggle to cast streamers on 4X and 3X leaders work better for me. I taper the size of the dropper’s tippet so I don’t create a hinge that balls up the hopper with the dropper. Stuff like that. Use Dan’s advice here and you’ll be golden 99% of the time

    Inflation hit tippet and leader pretty hard. I used to treat leaders as pretty disposable, not anymore.

      Put a tippet ring on your new leader and add tippet to that. The leader will last a long time.

  • @jamescooper2618

    I really think that too many guys think they need 6X to catch trout and I feel that because they are using such light tippet, they take way too long to land a fish and in many conditions, the fish is struggling to survive after release and many do not. 5X has been the lightest tippet I fish with and 4 has been good too. Of course much of this depends on the size of the fly too but this is my observation.

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  3 месяца назад

      I never use anything lighter than 5x either and have never ha any issues with break-offs. Thanks for watching!

    I see you do a lot of winter fishing.. I'm curious what your limit is for when it's too cold to be out there. I've fished a lot this winter and find that right around freezing I'm out. I enjoy getting out in the cold since usually I'm by myself and nobody is in my favorite spots.

      I have gone out when it's in the high 20's - but don't last very long...especially when there is no sun. Nothing worse than fighting ice in the guides.

    So you don't size your tippet to hook size, as in the formula based on multiplier of 3. ?

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  Год назад +1

      Nope - typically I will size my tippet to conditions and the type of fly I'm using and the species of fish I'm targeting. That strategy has worked well for me for many years. Cheers!

    So the biggest question i have is could i just tie on a 3x tapered leader and tie on 4x or 5x when i need it continuing the taper? Or should i just tie on the whole new leader?

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  Год назад +1

      There are a few fly fishers that have made their own tapers - however, the hinge points from tying lines together become problematic when doing it the way that you described. To get the best presentation (rolling over the fly) it's best to stick with the ones that are premade and designed to deliver the best performance.
