Just hearing the sound of Gavin's voice saying "In this video..." fills me up with anticipation. This session is mind blowing as usual. Thanks Gavin for this. Appreciate it :)
Great teaching video. I just started shooting smoke today. I had about a 30% success rate. So, I went to the University of RUclips and found your video. Great advice!!!!!! I will be using your info, hopefully, to great success soon.
Thank you Gavin for the tricks and tips brother. I needed something fresh to work on. Appreciate what you are doing everyday. Take care...I am always watching...lol
Gavin what flash star device did you use behind her it looked awesome. It was not the Savage starlight I have that device. You used some kind of star device that was on the flash unit behind her ?
I know this is an old video, but maybe Gavin will still see the comment - I just acquired a fog machine and came acros this video - super content, and a great model! I have a LightBlaster and tried it with the fog, but couldn't get the sharpness of the lines you got Gavin. I was using a 3D printed gobo which has good edges that projects well onto a background. 50mm 1.8 lens wide open. I tried varying the focus distance on the lens but didn't see a lot of diference. Am I missing something?
Great video Gavin! I particularly liked the shots with the light blaster so I went out and bought one for myself and also the creative slide kits. I was disappointed though the creative kits didn't include the slide that you used. That was the reason that I bought the package as I wished to shoot the same style images. Where can I purchase the slide that you used?
Love your videos. Would you ever consider doing a video that shows your "Small home studio"? I would love to have a home studio. If i did, it would for sure be a "SMALL home studio". I would love to see yours in detail.
Not done a video as there's really nothing else to see. My studio wall is at one end, my PC is at the other. Lots more details are here scottkelby.com/guest-blog-wednesday-featuring-gavin-hoey
Awesome video. I’ve done some smoke shoots, but not with a model yet. And I’ve been trying to figure out how to get light rays. That light blaster is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Brilliant as always and a beautiful model too! I bought a small smoke machine for my own " small home studio " but I've yet to try it out. I didn't realise there were different smoke types, I'll have to stock up on the various fluids 😊
Great video Gavin with very useful tips. My home studio is also our TV/Living Room with soft furnishings, carpets and curtains. Does anyone know if these smoke machines leave a residue?
Great video Gavin, love your work. Although I'm a bit disappointed on the way the "Light Blaster" worked on your video. I just recently purchased one and could not get the results you achieved, had to return it.
@thegavinhoey - Great video. I do have a question, the first set you indicated that CO2 was being used but it looks like she is using the Hurricane 1200 Fog Machine for all 3. I understand about the light and heavy fluids but how do you setup the Hurricane 1200 for CO2? Thanks.
hi Gavin, I would like to buy a smoke machine but I'm afraid of ruining my camera and lenses !! What kind of smoke machine should I buy? In water, oil? I'm a little confused.
For the problem of focusing with a lot of smoke, wouldn't it be easier to use a manual lens, with no autofocus at all, while staying at the same distance from the subject?
Gavin, thanks for that video. I wanted to have a go at using a smoke machine in our work / office studio. Was told by our landlords NO as they were unsure if smoke alarms would be affected. Any idea on this ??
I took professional advice on this a few years back. The upshot was it probably won't set off most domestic smoke alarms but might set off optically triggered detectors.
Great as always, I make my own fog fluid so much cheaper.( ask if you not know how to make it) One point is to watch out if you have Smoke Alarms.... I found out the hard way LOL..
Hi Chaz. From my non-scientific experiments, different smoke machines and different smoke fluids have very different effects on household smoke alarms. Some set them off, others don't.
Great video my friend, what was the name of the (light blaster?) accessory that lights the background? This video is just what I was looking for today, many thanks I loved it.
Finally after all those years. I found Gavin.
Just hearing the sound of Gavin's voice saying "In this video..." fills me up with anticipation. This session is mind blowing as usual. Thanks Gavin for this. Appreciate it :)
Really liked the light blaster when rays went through her arms.
Great tutorial, as always. The model is gorgeous and looks like she have an on and off switch.. Hahaha! She knows her stuff well. Very impressed.
I've worked with Meg both as a model and photographer. What a professional
Great teaching video. I just started shooting smoke today. I had about a 30% success rate. So, I went to the University of RUclips and found your video. Great advice!!!!!! I will be using your info, hopefully, to great success soon.

Meg is really good at her job.
Awesome as usual Gav, thanks to you and Sam.
here is a daft question - could you have someone vaping behind the model and backlit to produce the same effect?
Gavin what flash star device did you use behind her it looked awesome. It was not the Savage starlight I have that device. You used some kind of star device that was on the flash unit behind her ?
Another great tutorial and good advice on the smoke solution types. Love the way that Meg just 'turns on' the modelling - excellent work!

I know this is an old video, but maybe Gavin will still see the comment - I just acquired a fog machine and came acros this video - super content, and a great model! Damn that model looks on point with that setup
Gavin, which way is the lens on the Blaster facing? The backdrop or on her back?
Wayne Bernier it's facing Meg's back :)
Great video Gavin! I particularly liked the shots with the light blaster so I went out and bought one for myself and also the creative slide kits. Mate, you’re a star. Great model!
He he, Meg Biffin. She's changed a bit since being bitten by a vampire. Good tips. Thank you.
Gavin, You video is great! Now I know I need a Light blaster!
Awesome video. I’ve done some smoke shoots, but not with a model yet. And I’ve been trying to figure out how to get light rays. That light blaster is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
What was the name of the LED light you used? I can not find it anywhere.
Second best video on smoke! First one goes to Jason Lanier
Awesome totally....
This type of smoke machine uses water based fog fluid and doesn't leave any residue.
Great video Gavin, love your work. Although I'm a bit disappointed on the way the "Light Blaster" worked on your video. I just recently purchased one and could not get the results you achieved, had to return it.
Where can we get that light blaster???
This was great
Thank you!
@thegavinhoey - Great video. I do have a question, the first set you indicated that CO2 was being used but it looks like she is using the Hurricane 1200 Fog Machine for all 3. I understand about the light and heavy fluids but how do you setup the Hurricane 1200 for CO2? Thanks.
It's CO2 effect smoke, not real CO2 )which is VERY hard to come by in the UK). It's called various names as mentioned at 2:28 :)
hi Gavin,
I would like to buy a smoke machine but I'm afraid of ruining my camera and lenses !!
What kind of smoke machine should I buy?
In water, oil?
I'm a little confused.
Sorry for the late reply. Look for water based smoke machines every time ;)
For the problem of focusing with a lot of smoke, wouldn't it be easier to use a manual lens, with no autofocus at all, while staying at the same distance from the subject?
It might if you're happy to do so, my eye sight isn't that good ;)
Gavin, thanks for that video.
I want try a this, but diy, flash and colander/sive ....
great tutorial..thank you very much Gavin!
Awesome
Great as always, I make my own fog fluid so much cheaper.( ask if you not know how to make it) One point is to watch out if you have Smoke Alarms.... I found out the hard way LOL..
Hi Chaz. From my non-scientific experiments, different smoke machines and different smoke fluids have very different effects on household smoke alarms. Some set them off, others don't.
