I have watched a lot of photography videos, over many years, in my pursuit of becoming a better photographer. I have to tell you, I have learned more from your "Take and make videos" than I have from any other photographer giving RUclips instructions. You make it simple and understandable. Thank you for doing these videos!
Excellent again Gavin. You do everything with so much balance. So knowledgeable and engaging. I remember when I first started watching your vids over 15 years ago. I thought you were the best then, and I still think you are.
Before I watch this I would like to thank Gavin and his crew for making this. I am sat at home having been told to stay at home from work today due to the storm "Ciaran" I live in Guernsey one of the Channel Islands right in the eye of the storm in the English Channel. We are safe but the Island has seen a lot of damage and so has our sister Island of Jersey :( So to be able to watch this and maybe a few of Gavin's other videos will make the day seem that little bit bet better. So thank you again Gavin and all the people at Adorama who make this youtube channel what it is.
Hi Peter. Thanks for the comment. I've been watching the mess Ciaran made in the Channel Islands, I'm just the other side of the channel and yet storm Ciaran seems to have missed us. Stay safe and keep watching... glad you still have power (memoires of 1987 linger!)
@@GavinHoey winds have died down and now its just none stop rain :( Ah yes 87 who will forget that one. Lucky this time we knew it was coming for days not like back then when Michael Fish said we had nothing to worry about ;) One of the good thngs over here is we have undergound power cables so no real problems with high winds on that front :)
I have no desire to work with a model in a studio, except when I'm watching one of Gavin's videos. Then it looks like a lot of fun. :) I'm shopping for a small retirement home this year, and while it's not a top priority, I keep an eye out for places that might have room for home studio. I'm handy with the DIY, and a small studio could be a fun project to build and use.
What's there to say? Everything has been said about Gavin (or almost everything :) ): Amazing! Excelent content! Beautifuly explained! Etc etc. Just don't quit on us Gavin. We'd be lost and sad without your videos ant knowledge
The breakdown and explanation of lighting is top notch! Great video. I love the way you went from a single light and built up to 3 lights. Great information. Keep them coming!
Just bought one of these (Godox)to start with... Will use a ND2-8 to help with the lack of ability to reduce power beyond 1/32. Also got a Godox XPro (Oly) trigger and 85cm Para softbox with grid, and will slowly build; realistically i won't need anything beyond this budget gear. Thanks for sharing and helping me with my decision.
So much fun to watch Gavin and his energy. And OF COURSE Gavin adds smoke!! Chloe just needs a Ural (or any bike, really. But my head went to a Ural) to go with the helmet and jacket! Reminds me of the woman from InkHeart when she's riding up to the castle, talking to herself wondering why she's going up there hahaha.
Big fan of the way you teach. Been watching our videos since you used to do those 1 hour photo challenges on a location. The model is a stunner! She looks a lot skinnier on her instagram, which is a bummer because more beautiful on the curvier side
Thanks for sharing. I have not seen almost anyone except you using the olympus om1 for portraits, almost 100% of the videos are dedicated to nature and animals, and maybe some to sports, it is with this when you really realize that it is not the camera but the photographer and his good know-how when it comes to capturing what he wants in a photograph. Have you ever thought about changing cameras to the "big brands" like Sony, Canon, Nikon that apparently are more focused on this type of work? Thank you again, it is a pleasure to see the videos you make.
As much as possible I try to keep these videos focused on lighting rather then cameras. The OM-1 is a lovely studio camera, backed up with a range of high quality portrait lenses (such as the M.Zuiko f/1.2 Pro range). You're right that OM SYSTEM's marketing has swung towards nature in recent years, for valid reasons but as you say, a photographer isn't defined by the band name on their camera 😉
@@GavinHoeysome of the names I always associated with M4/3 have jumped ship, so as a M4/3 user and Olympus fan, your videos have a certain touch of familiarity and brotherhood (?) in addition to the ever-awesome content 🤓🥇
Almost no one* 😉 One of the biggest issues with micro 4/3 is noise at higher ISO and I guess AF systems and other functions are not as advanced. However, in studio you don't really need higher ISO thanks to flash and you don't need that good AF (because most scenes are not as dynamic and you usually use higher aperture walues, so depth of field is way wider and AF does not have to be as accurate). But camera is small, light and I think that lenses are way cheaper than full frame.
I love your videos as always Chloe too of course! When it comes to studio work I consider myself to be a new guy still. These videos help so much. Thank you!
Hello, once again, great class. I would love to know which monitor is connected to the camera so we can see the photos when clicking. Could you make a video just about this? Thanks
Another great video, I’ve been thinking of setting up a small studio similar to yours but the cost of lighting has always put me off, I’ll now check out the system you used, thanks
Hi Paul. For the cost of one light, you get three. AND the stands and softboxes and transmitter and a storage case... I just wish this was a round when I started out!
This is fantastic to watch. I also have to wonder what quality of photo you may be able to get from the really really budget lights. Similar to the details in the video, the kind of kits where you get 3 lights and softboxes for the price of 1 of the BLAZ300's.
Hi Gavin, I'm Ovadia from Israel. I thank you and Adorama for the important and very usefull lessons, they are realy inspiring and i spend joyfull hours waching them. I have a question for the last part of the video: you said you can mixs different flashes of the same make, but what happens when we try to use some of them in HSS mode? is there a way to properly work with a mix like that?
That eye tracking is crazy. My D7200 just hunts constantly trying o keep the face in focus, never mind an eye. I have to use live view and zoom in to set the focus manually.
Hi Diane. I use a TetherTools USB2 cable to connect my camera to my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 Laptop / Tablet. That runs Windows 10 and I tether with my cameras software (OM Capture / Workspace). Lots more info and tips on tethering in my video ruclips.net/video/n4jhTqs1caI/видео.htmlsi=fUXIiyuhnJ4fLarn&t=30
a couple of questions. how do you pack the carry bag when youre done? i have the same kit (only godox branded because Adorama was out of stock when i needed this 3-light kit) and your 'monitor/screen' are you tethering through Lr or C1 or are you just using it strictly as a larger monitor?
I may have missed it, but could you go into detail on the differences between smoke machines and the differences in liquid smoke? I have heard some smoke will leave a film on the furniture etc and some smoke may make it hard for certain people to breathe some smoke is water based and some is oil base. Thanks in advance.
Maybe oil based smoke is/was a thing but I've never seen it. The water based fluids from reputable brands (such as the ones Adorama carry) leave no residue and are safe to breath (always check no one has any breathing issues before use of course). I coved smoke types and effects in depth on this video ruclips.net/video/6-Q9HVzzIC4/видео.htmlsi=4Y8fLRifgzaXsetK&t=19
Great Video Gavin. Thank you. would these lights be able to freeze motion as in water splash photography? I currently use off camera speed lights, but would love to upgrade my lighting gear. I would require the lights to be able to freeze motion Thank you
You'll probably find the flash duration specs on the Adorama store page for the Blaz300 head. I suspect the flash technology used here isn't the kind that has super short flash durations, so my guess is the EVOLV 200 is a better choice.
i actually just ordered a show maven lighting and backdrop setup through Amazon i havent worked with it yet, but will it work with my godex remote flash trigger
The thing where the light "stores" the power. Is there a name or phrase for that? How do you know if the light you're going to buy is going to do that?
Great video Gavin Hoey. I have...and enjoy using my two Godox SK400II. I'm about to buy the Godox SK400II.V pretty soon. Can I have a video showcasing all your cameras? Should be a fun one.
Hi Marcus. All my cameras? Sure, I've got a Praktica MTL5B but if you can find me a working Minolta Dynax 7000i and a colour darkroom, we could cover my favourite film cameras. Then we'd need a Olympus 2020z, Fuji S602, Canon 5D Mkii, Hasselblad H3D, Canon 40D...actually this sounds like fun, but I don't think many people would watch 😉
Not being able to turn them lower than 1/32th power is a serious limitation. I would try to buy only one or two flashes to start with, with a wider range of outputs. And better lightstands than those. I think that you would end up regretting buying these things really fast and selling them, which in the end would be more expensive that buying some correct stuff from the start.
I don't know if using speedlights is considered low budget. I suppose it would be but that's still my lighting setup. That said I don't normally shoot portraits in studio. Anyway.... now lets do one using absolutely budget rgb led stuff you buy for next to nothing online. 🤣🤣
So you can control them individually. For example, in the last sequence, you'd probably want the rear strobe that is lighting the smoke to be at a lower power level than the key light.
