Nobody knows prolific and mercurial Atlanta rapper Young Thug quite like audio engineer Alex Tumay. The Queens, NY, native has been the only professional able to keep up with the talented rapper, harnessing his abilities on the Slime Season trilogy of mixtapes, I’m Up and JEFFERY.
In his lecture at the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy, Young Thug's engineer Alex Tumay discussed how he stumbled into engineering, working with one of the brightest and weirdest talents in rap, and how Atlanta’s new generation achieved a unique sound.

It's insane how far cla vocals can get you
Stop using CLA, I make all producers take cla plug-ins off before I even touch it.

CLA wooooo
Pablo Lemus
Everyone keeps saying CLA Vocals sucks but nobody is saying WHY!!! What’s wrong with the plugin? Cuz I use it all the time and it VASTLY improves my mixes
These people in the crowd don't even know they are in the presence of a modern day legend
his story is amazing from making a song with thug w/o even seeing him to the leaks which where you can see Alex tearing up and then to Jeffery it's just been incredible. thank you redbull for this
"I met Alex, I met Jimmy, he got racks"
Tumay a legend
it's I make Ellis, I know Jimmy, he got racks
+Sain Laurent no, that's what they say on genius but if ur a true thugger fan u know him & u know it's I met Alex, I know Jimmy, he got racks, there is also logic behind: meeting someone & then saying knowing someone? Get it?
Bro he said young thug punched in every single line on Danny glover , he dropping some good ass knowledge on this vid
There should be time stamps for when he talks about certain things
Time To Get Off My Ass.

Tyler B He Didn't Record 21 Savage He Just Mixed The Music
I would love and watch the shit out of a show where Rollie just toured around and talked to artists, authors and musicians. Great call getting him to host. Also, engineering going "post-console" s is pretty interesting. This is my fav interview from this years RBMA. Thanks!
damn this is the first one of these lectures i've watched but holy shit this is just so inspirational and shows you what it takes to make it and really how lucky you have to be
luck doesn't exist..talent and hard work DOES.

Super dope
This shit is so legendary.
Little did he know two years later baby and gunna would come out of ATL sounding the same lmao
RIP Seth firkins 😭
55:34 Dude asks a question regarding the Animal Collective record and then gets lost in Alex's answer and thinks they're talking about Travis Scott
lol
Low key pissed me off. “I feel like it really changed everything. This was a totally new sound for rap.”
Nah he didn't get lost.
56:32 is when Alex switches to talking about Skyfall. He doesn’t explicitly say “Skyfall.” He just calls it “that track” and he gestures towards the gear on the table where they had just played Skyfall.
Start watching from 54:37 to get the bigger picture.
@@ale-sw2br yep, mentions dropping h-delays and a bunch of cracked plugins on each track, whereas the Animal Collective mixing process used an actual h3000.
He also points briefly at the mixer on the table, referring to Skyfall which had just played. I had to watch back to realize lol seemed confusing at first
I always think about my house-burning too😂😂
Love this shit
Mad proud of you Alex, congrats man
Travis Scott 51:35
15:15 The face that people living for the music make when they are like " i don t know already if i will have babies " lmfao
Peep Zane Lowe in the crowd 10:05
Smart Man
Having to work fast like that has its ups and downs. You can definitely tell some of those tunes are rushed. Especially earlier Thug. But as a producer myself. I under the importance of A.) getting ideas out as quickly as possible before they vanish. B.) Actually finishing projects to move on to the next one. C.) Keeping up with the speed of the new market.
take or keep on danny glover that's wild
CLA VOCALS!!!!
How in the world do you go to this and not have a question for alex tumay??? Hard to believe smh
You guys should really name the songs you play in the description
i hope everyone took breaks along with the show to listen to the Thugger songs
