I uset to go to Ludlow market, fantastic veg etc. The cheese stall sold wedding dresses!!!!??!! Love Ludlow Shropshire, worth a weekend trip. Fabulous castle and food its just dtunning.
Generally the US is the exception with the flag thing certainly throughout Europe you wont see a country's flag much, I don't think anywhere else swears allegiance to the flag etc. Not a bad old place UK really glad you can appreciate all the everyday stuff, enjoy.
About the flags; we're a patriotic nation, we just don't feel the need to shout about it like that. If there's a sports tournament we're doing well in, like the recent Women's World Cup, then you might see some more flags being flown. If you want to see us really showing how patriotic we can be, I recommend you watch the Last Night Of The Proms on September 9th, especially when Rule Britannia comes on.🎉🇬🇧

The only place in Britain I have seen a lot of flags outside a major sport event was in Belfast during The Troubles- flags were used tribally and to intimidate. Whilst I am sure most English never experienced this, it left a sour taste for me and put me off flying flags.
In the UK we only have the one flag for the union and it serves the same purpose as both of the flags available to the United states; the stars and stripes (national unity) and the confederate flag (national divisiveness). For many of my generation the union jack was only ever used to decorate racist organisations and extreme right wing events. Even though my family fought and died for the flag during ww2 I am extremely suspicious of any event that requires a UK flag to be waved. After all people who need to wave flags probably shouldn’t be allowed to have them.

There are lots of rules surrounding flags here in the UK. You will often see them on government buildings and universities here. Different flags have to be raised and lowered throughout the year for various special days. Ordinary citizens tend not to have a flagpole although you might see some England flags hanging out of windows in support of the England football teams. Our country is so old that we don't need to have flags to remind us of our identity. I enjoy your videos because I get to see parts of England that I have never visited.

I am really enjoying your videos and, like all other commentators, I think that your family are delightful and very welcome. I live in Suffolk and the places you visit are very familiar. If you have not already done so, King's Lynn, Fakenham, Cromer and Bury St Edmunds are lovely. At Christmas time, the small town of Holt in Norfolk puts on a fantastic festive light display. I could not help but notice that the lovely oak barrel has some of its rings missing and I guess those are the loose rings you picked up. When a barrel is empty, the oak shrinks and the rings become loose and fall off. The 'spare' rings need to be put back and hammered tight or the barrel will soon fall apart. Apologies if you already knew this.

We live in Norfolk but further east. As it's not far have you been to Ely. Lovely place and cathedral is truly awesome. You must explore the north Norfolk coast. Fabulous beaches. Holt, Aylsham, Reepham and Swaffham are attractive little towns. Norwich is wonderful too. Has everything.

Hi Jess Thank you for another lovely video showing your region of the country. I've travelled all over this island except for East Anglia so it's interesting to see what I have missed. With regard to the flying of the flag, I have a theory that in America there is no one that represents your country. You have a president but if they don't belong to the party you support you are not going to think of them as representing you. Therefore, the flag is all you have to show your support for your country. Here in the UK, we have a Monarch who represents everybody regardless of political persuasion. I am as patriotic as anybody but I have never felt the need to fly a flag. As I say, this is my theory, but I would be interested to hear other peoples views on the matter.
I tend to agree with you Kenneth. The US flag is treated as the non-political symbol of national identity. In contrast, our national flag is essentially treated as bunting. The design can be reproduced on door mats, tea towels, umbrellas, footwear almost anything, even items of underwear. As you have pointed out, we have a monarch, a figure above politics who is with us for life and the focus of national identity.

I love these gentle calm videos through the countryside. Very well presented. Check the KFC sauce for ingredients and you will find that the US version probably has 3 times the ingredients. They will be additives banned in Europe.

Old barrels like that make amazing garden features. a bit of soil and compost, some flowers and hey presto. Old ornate chimney pots usually with hairline cracks are often used for the same thing as well as old fashioned buckets and kettles,

Most whisky (whiskey is Irish) ages for several years in what used to be port barrels, so it is possible your barrel held port at some time in its early life. These usually oak barrels were made by tradesmen called Coopers whilst the hoops were installed, oddly enough, by a Hooper!
The only places we've been to in our car (I'm a Trucker and used to load out of company near DM called Big K that "make" the BBQ briquette things) was the local cemeteries. Sounds weird right but we were trying to trace our family tree and there were supposed to be lots of our surname buried around there ! Didn't find any btw ! lol

Cops are mainly concentrated in cities these days, you don't see many in the countryside or small towns anymore. The Government have decimated the police forces all over the UK,you were very fortunate to see a cop car. By the way i like your video.👍
The village you drive through is Crimplesham - pronounced CRIMPLE and SHAM - but as all one word. But it isn't somewhere I am familiar with, so it could be CRIMPLES and HAM but as all one word! Even us Brits get it wrong in places......

Jess Chris wow wow the Whiskey barrel is stunning and you got that really cheap! If you just drove to London with it in the back of your car you would have no problem asking £100 for it! You see some people in the UK just drive out in to the country and buy stock to sell back in the Cities and their towns here in the UK. They make a great profit and the customers are very happy! On the topic of flags in our Country you wont see too many as its our government pushing for a Multi cultural society and by raising a flag you segregate peopl! Dont ask my how this is but that our government being non patriotic! Lovely trip and great to watch thanks for sharing guys!

jess in england there has been a professinal soccer league since 1888. there are 92 clubs in 4 divisions the top division has 20 clubs the other 3 each have 24 teams. each team plays the other teams in there division once at home and once away 3 points for a win 1 point for a tie and there are no play offs. at the end of every season the bottam 3 teams swap places with the top 3 teams from the division below the exceptions being the top of the top division and the bottam of the bottam division
When you mention KFC, I remember in a US jaunt, traveling back from San Diego zoo, back to Yuma, and stopping for some take away to enjoy with a few wines at home. You might be onto something, picking up old British Antiques/bric a brac all the time and taking them home, when you do leave the UK. Fill up your shipping container, open up a store in America, they will sell like hot cakes. I want 20% of the profit for giving you the idea ;) No way, that barrel cost you 45 quid!!1

With regards to the flag, ....being overly fond of the English or British flags these days marks you out as a certain type of person...a bit of a Brexiteer, possible right wing, a middle englander, or a past British bulldog still thinking we have an empire ...those might be broad generalisations but in part true , however I think most in the UK see a flag as an identity yes, but are really not bothered about waving a piece of cloth shouting that we are British, we know we are British and will defend what is right as a population but not to the extent of displaying our flag on every street corner, house porch etc as that's a little overboard I guess and at best shows patriotism, but one that needs to be constantly talked about and shown to believe its real, or at worst nationalism to tell the world we are this, don't mess with us type of mentality.....or very simple put, we don't really have a history of flags on houses every street corner on your trucks etc, no European country does, flags only come out for special events 🤷♂️❤🇬🇧🇺🇲🏴🏴🏴

Hi guys! Another great video and you sure did pick the weather well. 🙂 Observations? Oh, ..... go on then 😉 Interesting to hear you talk about "traditional" Fast Food. To us here in the UK the only real Fast Food that we had was good old Fish and Chips up until the 1980s and the spread of mainly US Chains such as the now ubiquitous McDonald's and KFC in that decade. There were some other outlets such as Oat Cake shops in the Black Country but not many. For something to be classed as Traditional here it needs to be at least 100 years old. 🤣 As for flying our flags on our houses, it isn't really too much of a "thing" here in the UK. Frankly, we don't feel the need to proclaim our nationality or pride in our country by doing that. It's enough for us to know that we feel it inside. We do however, on certain special occasions, decorate our villages, towns and city centres with our various flags. You should have been here in 2020 for the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. The nation was awash with them! And despite the Covid Lockdown we all came out (socially distanced of course!) to celebrate. The same sort of thing happened for our late Queen's Jubilee celebrations in 2012 and, of course, last year. That barrel looks as though it needs the attention of a Cooper (Barrel Maker and Restorer) if you plan to actually store anything in it. I believe that there is one in Little Waldingfield. If the spelling of whisky has an “e” in it, it isn’t Scottish whisky. Irish whiskey does have an “e”. So, Americans, please don’t be tempted to think that your Scotch always comes from Scotland.
We had a big problem with people who liked flags about 80 years ago. Often but not always people who like to display the flag all the time express those peoples sentiments in Europe. So people only display the flag on important events.

Flying British flags here in England isn't as big a thing as it is in America, although we are patriotic to our country we don't feel the need to show it constantly. however people will decorate their cars and homes with flags, face painting tying the union around their necks to show support, plus the British weather can be very unkind to flags . I have always loved markets and charity shops like the Borough Market London , Leeds indoor and outdoor markets are my favourite , but i also hear Camden Market is good too, but i haven't been unfortunately, i enjoyed the video guys see you in the next .

Have you heard of the expression “we’re putting the flags out…” at all?☺️ as you have recognised, we are not in the habit of putting our national Union flag or the relevant “country” flag, like to flag of St George just up where we fancy it, they only get put on flag poles on “special occasion and celebrations” etc etc. when it will actually MEAN something and not just be a decoration that one gets used to seeing all the time. Seeing all the Union flags at both the Queen’s Jubilees (all four of them!) and the recent coronation of King Charles in the Mall in London and bunting decorating the streets and shops, enforced the importance of the occasion and made it feel like a special “one-off” ☺️ So, we have that expression - “putting the flags out” (which can be used in speech to have different meanings and connotations 😉 celebratory and sarcastically! ) to indicate something that worthy of celebrating is occurring and yes, the flags go out and up! The expression can also be used not as a compliment but as a kind of sarcastic comment …. For example, you may have a friend or acquaintance not known for their generosity at buying “a round of drinks” in a pub and someone might make a back handed remark saying “ooh look, put the flags out, Joe’s (or a lady Joan!)got his wallet out and buying the drinks!” - meaning him (or her!) buying the drinks is such an unusual thing to occur, it’s worthy of a bit of “flag waving”! 😂. Or like me here, a truculent task avoiding teenager volunteering to wash the dishes, my mum would clap her hands and pretend to wave a flag at her happiness of me doing something useful! 😲🙄😁 So, if flags were on display all of the time, a special event (like anything to do with Royalty or Last Night of the Proms) just wouldn’t have the same sense of patriotic occasion to it, as well, it’s just “a flag” 🤷🏽♀️ If you want to witness lovely but mad patriot fervour, look out for Last Night of the Proms on BBC1 tv station 😁 thousands of people inside the Royal Albert Hall and in parks around the UK countries, all from different parts of the world, wearing daft hats and holding flags of all nationalities and sizes, dancing and singing and having a really good time. I am not embarrassed or ashamed to say it but watching it always makes me 🥲happy tears! And I think a lot of people feel the same way too…. Keep having fun here and enjoying our little green land 🥰

Flying the Union flag or the Cross of St George, labels you as an Imperialist, Colonialist, Fascist, Right wing extremist and Racist. We are discouraged from being proud of our country, and from being patriotic. Disgusting isn't it, and utter nonsense of course. By the way, you were only a few miles from Gooderstone Water Gardens today. A charming and tranquil place which we loved,and visited often. Lovely tea ( and I'm sure coffee ) and home made cakes of the highest quality. Please add to your list. Take binoculars if you have them!
I don't agree. Flags have been used to intimidate (in Northern Ireland) but in mainland Britain it is more that there is no need- as a nation we know our identity and don't need reminding of it. Pre WW1 flags were everywhere (look at old photos) but the slaughter that happened in the name of nationalism meant nationalism took a back seat.
Yes, flag waving isn't really a British thing though there are exceptions such as the annual Last Night of the Proms but that's very much an exception. The general British culture is 'don't brag' and there-by flag waving is seen as excessive, sort of, yes, we know your British so you don't need to wave the flag.

Special consideration along those lines are Birthday cards, and for people you have known from your schools days 🙂 I never pay for parking. I ride an EUC and tend to use that for last mile into town. Pride - well I did cut the hedge today 🙂. Flags - yes a lot in the states. We are proud of our Country and our flag but, we are more understated. Scottish, Welsh, Cornish flags are flown in those areas because although British, they are also proud of their traits and culture within the Country. when you were talking about " showing our flags", the reason is simple !, OUR ASIAN FRIENDS DON,T LIKE IT and complain, i,m from near manchester in a town called " rochdale"{ birthplace of the co op, lisa stansfield, ], also our town hall was wanted by hitler, if he had won ww11 , he had plans to pull it down { stone by stone} and re build it in berlin !, anyway , in the north of the u.k, we have a lot of asians { a lot in rochdale}, and they moan at the saint george flag being shown !, you wouldent belive it would you!, " but its true", centuries of tradition being spat upon by muslims, whove been here 5 minutes.

I am really enjoying your videos and, like all other commentators, I think that your family are delightful and very welcome. I live in Suffolk and the places you visit are very familiar. If you have not already done so, King's Lynn, Fakenham, Cromer and Bury St Edmunds are lovely. At Christmas time, the small town of Holt in Norfolk puts on a fantastic festive light display.
I could not help but notice that the lovely oak barrel has some of its rings missing and I guess those are the loose rings you picked up. When a barrel is empty, the oak shrinks and the rings become loose and fall off. The 'spare' rings need to be put back and hammered tight or the barrel will soon fall apart. Apologies if you already knew this.

We live in Norfolk but further east. As it's not far have you been to Ely. Lovely place and cathedral is truly awesome. You must explore the north Norfolk coast. Fabulous beaches. Holt, Aylsham, Reepham and Swaffham are attractive little towns. Norwich is wonderful too. Has everything.

Thank you for another lovely video showing your region of the country. I've travelled all over this island except for East Anglia so it's interesting to see what I have missed.
With regard to the flying of the flag, I have a theory that in America there is no one that represents your country. You have a president but if they don't belong to the party you support you are not going to think of them as representing you. Therefore, the flag is all you have to show your support for your country.
Here in the UK, we have a Monarch who represents everybody regardless of political persuasion. I am as patriotic as anybody but I have never felt the need to fly a flag.
As I say, this is my theory, but I would be interested to hear other peoples views on the matter.
I tend to agree with you Kenneth. The US flag is treated as the non-political symbol of national identity. In contrast, our national flag is essentially treated as bunting. The design can be reproduced on door mats, tea towels, umbrellas, footwear almost anything, even items of underwear. As you have pointed out, we have a monarch, a figure above politics who is with us for life and the focus of national identity.
You don't see a plethora of flags in European republics like France or Germany for example.

I love these gentle calm videos through the countryside. Very well presented. Check the KFC sauce for ingredients and you will find that the US version probably has 3 times the ingredients. They will be additives banned in Europe.

Old barrels like that make amazing garden features. a bit of soil and compost, some flowers and hey presto. Old ornate chimney pots usually with hairline cracks are often used for the same thing as well as old fashioned buckets and kettles,

Most whisky (whiskey is Irish) ages for several years in what used to be port barrels, so it is possible your barrel held port at some time in its early life. These usually oak barrels were made by tradesmen called Coopers whilst the hoops were installed, oddly enough, by a Hooper!

The only places we've been to in our car (I'm a Trucker and used to load out of company near DM called Big K that "make" the BBQ briquette things) was the local cemeteries.
Sounds weird right but we were trying to trace our family tree and there were supposed to be lots of our surname buried around there !

Cops are mainly concentrated in cities these days, you don't see many in the countryside or small towns anymore. The Government have decimated the police forces all over the UK,you were very fortunate to see a cop car. By the way i like your video.👍

The village you drive through is Crimplesham - pronounced CRIMPLE and SHAM - but as all one word. But it isn't somewhere I am familiar with, so it could be CRIMPLES and HAM but as all one word! Even us Brits get it wrong in places......
Not been to Downham for 20+ years and that was for the horse racing course and stud. Then on to the Broads (not women) and Fenlands. As usual, a charming visual presentation with commentary.

Jess Chris wow wow the Whiskey barrel is stunning and you got that really cheap! If you just drove to London with it in the back of your car you would have no problem asking £100 for it! You see some people in the UK just drive out in to the country and buy stock to sell back in the Cities and their towns here in the UK. They make a great profit and the customers are very happy! On the topic of flags in our Country you wont see too many as its our government pushing for a Multi cultural society and by raising a flag you segregate peopl! Dont ask my how this is but that our government being non patriotic! Lovely trip and great to watch thanks for sharing guys!

jess in england there has been a professinal soccer league since 1888. there are 92 clubs in 4 divisions the top division has 20 clubs the other 3 each have 24 teams. each team plays the other teams in there division once at home and once away 3 points for a win 1 point for a tie and there are no play offs. at the end of every season the bottam 3 teams swap places with the top 3 teams from the division below the exceptions being the top of the top division and the bottam of the bottam division

When you mention KFC, I remember in a US jaunt, traveling back from San Diego zoo, back to Yuma, and stopping for some take away to enjoy with a few wines at home. I was shocked when they gave us mashed potatoes instead of fries. Local preferences I take it. Nice to see your traditional barrel. Great condition and complete. Good find. Coopering, I imagine is a great career nowadays. Have you ever tried Kings Lynn market and Hunstanton markets? It’s tooling since I was in that neck of the woods. Keep up the great videography.

You might be onto something, picking up old British Antiques/bric a brac all the time and taking them home, when you do leave the UK. Fill up your shipping container, open up a store in America, they will sell like hot cakes. I want 20% of the profit for giving you the idea ;)

With regards to the flag, ....being overly fond of the English or British flags these days marks you out as a certain type of person...a bit of a Brexiteer, possible right wing, a middle englander, or a past British bulldog still thinking we have an empire ...those might be broad generalisations but in part true , however I think most in the UK see a flag as an identity yes, but are really not bothered about waving a piece of cloth shouting that we are British, we know we are British and will defend what is right as a population but not to the extent of displaying our flag on every street corner, house porch etc as that's a little overboard I guess and at best shows patriotism, but one that needs to be constantly talked about and shown to believe its real, or at worst nationalism to tell the world we are this, don't mess with us type of mentality.....or very simple put, we don't really have a history of flags on houses every street corner on your trucks etc, no European country does, flags only come out for special events 🤷♂️❤🇬🇧🇺🇲🏴🏴🏴

Interesting to hear you talk about "traditional" Fast Food. To us here in the UK the only real Fast Food that we had was good old Fish and Chips up until the 1980s and the spread of mainly US Chains such as the now ubiquitous McDonald's and KFC in that decade.
There were some other outlets such as Oat Cake shops in the Black Country but not many.
For something to be classed as Traditional here it needs to be at least 100 years old. 🤣
As for flying our flags on our houses, it isn't really too much of a "thing" here in the UK. Frankly, we don't feel the need to proclaim our nationality or pride in our country by doing that. It's enough for us to know that we feel it inside.
We do however, on certain special occasions, decorate our villages, towns and city centres with our various flags. You should have been here in 2020 for the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. The nation was awash with them! And despite the Covid Lockdown we all came out (socially distanced of course!) to celebrate.
The same sort of thing happened for our late Queen's Jubilee celebrations in 2012 and, of course, last year.
That barrel looks as though it needs the attention of a Cooper (Barrel Maker and Restorer) if you plan to actually store anything in it. I believe that there is one in Little Waldingfield.

If the spelling of whisky has an “e” in it, it isn’t Scottish whisky. Irish whiskey does have an “e”. So, Americans, please don’t be tempted to think that your Scotch always comes from Scotland.

We had a big problem with people who liked flags about 80 years ago. Often but not always people who like to display the flag all the time express those peoples sentiments in Europe.
So people only display the flag on important events.

Flying British flags here in England isn't as big a thing as it is in America, although we are patriotic to our country we don't feel the need to show it constantly. however people will decorate their cars and homes with flags, face painting tying the union around their necks to show support, plus the British weather can be very unkind to flags . I have always loved markets and charity shops like the Borough Market London , Leeds indoor and outdoor markets are my favourite , but i also hear Camden Market is good too, but i haven't been unfortunately, i enjoyed the video guys see you in the next .

Have you heard of the expression “we’re putting the flags out…” at all?☺️ as you have recognised, we are not in the habit of putting our national Union flag or the relevant “country” flag, like to flag of St George just up where we fancy it, they only get put on flag poles on “special occasion and celebrations” etc etc. when it will actually MEAN something and not just be a decoration that one gets used to seeing all the time.
Seeing all the Union flags at both the Queen’s Jubilees (all four of them!) and the recent coronation of King Charles in the Mall in London and bunting decorating the streets and shops, enforced the importance of the occasion and made it feel like a special “one-off” ☺️
So, we have that expression - “putting the flags out” (which can be used in speech to have different meanings and connotations 😉 celebratory and sarcastically! ) to indicate something that worthy of celebrating is occurring and yes, the flags go out and up!
The expression can also be used not as a compliment but as a kind of sarcastic comment …. For example, you may have a friend or acquaintance not known for their generosity at buying “a round of drinks” in a pub and someone might make a back handed remark saying “ooh look, put the flags out, Joe’s (or a lady Joan!)got his wallet out and buying the drinks!” - meaning him (or her!) buying the drinks is such an unusual thing to occur, it’s worthy of a bit of “flag waving”! 😂. Or like me here, a truculent task avoiding teenager volunteering to wash the dishes, my mum would clap her hands and pretend to wave a flag at her happiness of me doing something useful! 😲🙄😁
So, if flags were on display all of the time, a special event (like anything to do with Royalty or Last Night of the Proms) just wouldn’t have the same sense of patriotic occasion to it, as well, it’s just “a flag” 🤷🏽♀️
If you want to witness lovely but mad patriot fervour, look out for Last Night of the Proms on BBC1 tv station 😁 thousands of people inside the Royal Albert Hall and in parks around the UK countries, all from different parts of the world, wearing daft hats and holding flags of all nationalities and sizes, dancing and singing and having a really good time. I am not embarrassed or ashamed to say it but watching it always makes me 🥲happy tears! And I think a lot of people feel the same way too….

It is illegal to fly any flag they are reserved only for public buildings. Concession is made for specific occasions by applying to local authorities

Hi folks, nice little tour today thank you. Look forward to seeing the barrel restored to full glory soon. As to the lack of flags in the UK, it is not considered acceptable, by some of our citizens. Flying the Union flag or the Cross of St George, labels you as an Imperialist, Colonialist, Fascist, Right wing extremist
and Racist. We are discouraged from being proud of our country, and from being patriotic. Disgusting isn't it, and utter nonsense of course.
By the way, you were only a few miles from Gooderstone Water Gardens today. A charming and tranquil place which we loved,and visited often. Lovely tea ( and I'm sure coffee ) and home made cakes of the highest quality. Please add to your list. Take binoculars if you have them!
I don't agree. Flags have been used to intimidate (in Northern Ireland) but in mainland Britain it is more that there is no need- as a nation we know our identity and don't need reminding of it. Pre WW1 flags were everywhere (look at old photos) but the slaughter that happened in the name of nationalism meant nationalism took a back seat.

Yes, flag waving isn't really a British thing though there are exceptions such as the annual Last Night of the Proms but that's very much an exception. The general British culture is 'don't brag' and there-by flag waving is seen as excessive, sort of, yes, we know your British so you don't need to wave the flag.

Special consideration along those lines are Birthday cards, and for people you have known from your schools days 🙂 I never pay for parking. I ride an EUC and tend to use that for last mile into town. Pride - well I did cut the hedge today 🙂. Flags - yes a lot in the states. We are proud of our Country and our flag but, we are more understated. Scottish, Welsh, Cornish flags are flown in those areas because although British, they are also proud of their traits and culture within the Country. when you were talking about " showing our flags", the reason is simple !, OUR ASIAN FRIENDS DON,T LIKE IT and complain, i,m from near manchester in a town called " rochdale"{ birthplace of the co op, lisa stansfield, ], also our town hall was wanted by hitler, if he had won ww11 , he had plans to pull it down { stone by stone} and re build it in berlin !, anyway , in the north of the u.k, we have a lot of asians { a lot in rochdale}, and they moan at the saint george flag being shown !, you wouldent belive it would you!, " but its true", centuries of tradition being spat upon by muslims, whove been here 5 minutes.
