    You've done character design.... BUT PLEASE CREATURE DESIGN!?

    • @DevoidFX
      @DevoidFX 8 лет назад +48

      To come up with interesting creatures, you need to know basic animals anatomy and structure and after that you can combine them. Also, you need to consider the environment the creature is living in and all sorts of scientifical facts so that you can come up with a believable and interesting creature design

    • @Caanze
      @Caanze 8 лет назад +9

      +DC Artz That's a really short and precise answer to a rather complex design process. Have my thanks and upvote, good Sir!

      +XxlnFlaMeSxX At first I smelled sarcasm, but yeah.. I learned that from another famous youtube artist, can't really tell which one though.. sycra or someone else

    • @leetri
      @leetri 8 лет назад +4

      +DC Artz I'd like to add, start with the environment. Where does it live? How do animals that live in that environment look? Why do they look like that? What food is available? How do they fit in the ecosystem?
      You can't have a penguin that lives in a salt desert and feeds off of apples on tall branches. Penguins are made to live in water, a salt desert cannot facilitate an apple tree and the penguin is not built to reach tall branches nor sustain itself on apples.
      Another thing you can do is take an animal you want your design to fill the role of, say savannah hunter. The obvious comparison is a lion, so look at the lion and try to pick out the mane (heh, puns) features. Quadruped, big claws to cling to prey, powerful limbs to sprint and jump at prey, etc. Keep it as general as possible, so no "short tail with fluff on". Now you have a list of characteristics of that archetype of animal that you can use.

    As someone who wants to work in the entertainment industry someday (to be specific, I want to write, direct, and act in movies and such) this is actually really helpful. I’m always one that doesn’t really like to have or overuse stereotypes and I hope to one day create content that will break certain molds and stigma around certain genres and characters. I know and understand to have a backbone for characters, most people start with a slight cliché, and from there expand upon those characters further. Thank you Jazza for making this, it’s super helpful and I will be sure to use these tips in the future!

    I primarily work in 3D these days, though I've also done a bit of writing, and I have to say that this is one of the greatest videos on creating characters I've seen. The knight was interesting, but I really found myself wanting to know more about Gary and Mr. Banks.
    One thing I remember reading from "How to Win Friends and Influence People" that I found interesting, and usually try to find a way to fit into my characters, is that everyone -- even the most evil person you can think of -- believes, from their point of view, that what they are doing is right. It's something to consider when you're working out a character's motives, particularly the villains. As twisted as this sounds, even Hitler thought he was making the world a better place by what he was doing.
    Love your videos, Jazza! Always find them interesting.

    Whenever I get into deep characterization, either for original works or fanfiction, I try to imagine what the character's bookshelf looks like. What kind of books would they have? On what reading level would they be and what subject would they be on? What kind of knick-knacks, if any, would it display? What about the bookshelf itself? Is it simple or ornate? Tidy or messy? Did the character buy it, get it from a friend, or build it? Are there any secrets about it? Answering these questions can really flesh out who a character is in your mind and influence the way you write them.

    I think everyone should use tabletop games like D&D to develop characters. Or just fill out a sheet; it helps so much. Just trying to roleplay as them in a table top games helps you figure out how they'd talk and what they'd do in certain situations, and sometimes adds some interesting backstory

      +cupcakemirin456 Monteiro to me it seems like you get tired of drawing details... I had this problem too, abandoning halfway because I was tired of it or because I did something wrong. You should try and draw with the big picture in mind, start with basic shapes, define silhouetes and only after that start working on the details.

    i have this one character for a manga/ comic i'm working on, were he is perfect in every way he is kind , rich , attractive, he is ladies man etc. but he has one huge flaw that you don't see the first time we see, witch is he has split personality and he slowly changes in to a insane maniac thirsty for blood and this shows over time were he goes from a guy who cant even look at a gun without getting nightmares to a person who slaughters villages , kills , rapes and eats and drinks humans and even he starts changing how he looks as well were he use to wear nice cloths, he was a neat freak to he has scares all over his body , ripped bloody cloths and carries rusty knives and guns. he does this because he has a inner demon slowly taking over his body and his slowly breaking him and forcing him to doing these acts.

      Sounds interesting but in order to be believable he'd have to have some flaws visible from the start. Nobody is perfect irl, and if readers see a perfect person they automatically lose interest. Even if he becomes more flawed as time goes on because of the demon/split personality thing, people won't care unless you build a real, flawed, human personality for him at the start. Then you can show how the flaws become more and more pronounced and so on as time goes on. (Not trying to criticize, just trying to offer helpful advice as a reader. Feel free to ignore me, it's your character after all lol)

      that's a pretty great idea, none of my characters come out that interesting. the are all either so good they could try out for Jesus, so bad they are basically the devil incarnate, or there to create contrast with other characters or the setting.

    You've reminded me of the time where I apparently shocked a GM by rolling a chaotic neutral halfling courtesan bard... Which was just the beginning of the shenanigans that game.
    Fun video--loved the costumes.

    Forgot to say this earlier, but this is a great video. I'm trying to make comics and write stories for the characters and everything said makes perfect sense. It's just sometimes I don't think about it when designing the actual characters and crafting their story.

    Great vid! You're basically describing FATE characters, with being proactive, having trouble aspects, and all that good stuff. If you haven't tried it, I think you'd really enjoy it, and the core rulebook is a free PDF. And since you're designing your own system, you can build it on their engine for better marketability. You sound like you already might be duplicating a lot of it anyway. They have an OGL, and a pretty strong following.
