I played a working port of Donkey Kong Country 2, the one with pirate ship, on a Famiclone. It was hard because of no girl monkey and 1-hit kills, and another had Diddy transform into DK same way Mario grows for extra life (or Simba here). No reason they couldn't make a proper version on Sega outside of Nintendon'ting.
Weird how Squirrel King had music from Donkey Kong Country, but the Donkey Kong game had music from a Mario game. (Technically chipmunks are squirrels.)

Maybe the reason why POJR thinks like this is because: Famiclones is a very popular word. There is probably no such thing as Geneclones & Superclones & Masterclones & 7800clones & Turboclones.
It's clear from his intro that this guy thinks like an American (as in not understanding that other countries exist). NES bootlegs are well-known because so many markets couldn't afford Nintendo's official products, but Sega are well-known for their longevity in South America and were more popular in parts of Europe than Nintendo ever were.
To be fair to Genesis, it could definitely do a better version of Donkey Kong Country than this bootleg one, but it definitely couldn't match the SNES version in multiple ways. It could have more horizontal view though.
I'm sure it's possible to make a better version of Donkey Kong country on the Genesis. The bootleg one is a bad example lol. I would imagine they would have to remove some of the color from the graphics, since the Genesis can't support as many colors on screen.
@@pojr They would definitely have to remove quite a lot of the colour, although it might not actually be that obvious if handled expertly, and likely reduce the quality of the backdrop gradients too. Genesis also can't support as many fully overlapping background layers and some of the transparency effects and such that are present in some of the levels either. And the FM audio wouldn't sound exactly the same as the PCM tracks on SNES, although still good regardless, just like the FM versions of the original PCM tracks in the Castlevania IV port to Genesis. But most of the rest would be doable me thinks.
I know, one time I bought a Gameboy Multi Cart with Bootleg Games. One of them was a Japanese Whack A Mole game where the Final Boss folded in ONE hit Even on Hard. Lots of Fun
Yo Pojr, there is a Genesis bootleg port of the NES game Felix The Cat, and be warned, if you run out of continues (being forced to quit), or voluntarily end the game, you are met with a violent game over screen.
The NES had more bootleg games because there was a huge market for bootleg consoles like Dendy or Subor. They didn't have to worry about anybody lawyering up because they were selling wares in places like Vietnam and Nigeria. Also the Genesis had a surprising number of unlicensed full-fledged RPGs for Chinese audiences, and a few even have English translations now.
For Bomboy ExplosionKid, although yeah it's based of Bomberman (NES), it's more similar to Super Bomberman for the SNES/SFC, especially with the simultaneous 2 player Co-op game-play, the HUD display, A world map to show your current location (or where you're heading to next), and no scrooling screen within the stages. Also there's a world based off Mario (specifically with mushrooms and ? Blocks) which although wierd considering that this game is on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, it's cool. Also compared to Super Bomberman there's no Battle mode to duke it out with COMs (or players), nor bosses to fight against (upon beating the last stage of a world, you head toward the next world) Although I haven't played it (yet), it's pretty cool and the soundtrack's good too.
Lol, finally found the logo intro you used. It sounded to familiar because I played a lot of V-rally back in the day on yhe gameboy color. Played it yesterday for some reason and heard it again. I know it has nothing to do with the video though 😅
Good stuff! I played Squirrel King and the Mario version many years ago. They were kind of fun for what they were, but I remember them being pretty challenging as they were still a bit wonky. @@pojr Oh, nice! There is actually a patch for the rom that fixes some compatibility issues on certain emulators. If you Google "Super Bubble Bobble Broken Menu Fix" you should find it if you want to try it.
Being a bootleg doesn't mean a game is bad. Some can be surprisingly good or even better than the originals. Take the NES bootleg of "The Lion King" (originally for Sega Mega Drive) as an example. I came across it in a video by Russian RUclipsr Pavel "Kinaman" Grinev. Despite the 8-bit downgrade in graphics and sound, the game features most levels and remains engaging. What's surprising is that no official NES port existed at the time. Years later, Virgin released one, but it was based on the Game Boy version and fell short compared to the bootleg.
Have you seen the Genesis Port of Super Mario Bros? Besides the colors being a bit off and the sound font being different, the gameplay is essentially the same as the NES version
The weirdest thing about Squirrel King is that this company insisted to make it a bootleg when they clearly had the talent to make a decent original game.
I'm not sure if they had the ability to make a game completely from scratch. A lot of their games did reuse graphics and music, as well as sound effects. They probably would have struggled to do all that on their own. Maybe they could have done it though
This is good to know. Originally, I thought it was adult Simba because you transform into him during the gameplay. I didn't think it was 2 different characters.
Nice to see some Genesis bootlegs. But here's the bonus question. Are there any bootlegs out there that managed to be better than the official games? Keeping it to cartridge systems were there any bootlegs so good it made the official offering look bad?
