Raspberry Pi No HDMI Revisited - Redesign!

- The Raspberry Pi No HDMI project went over really well. It could be the basis for a great kit except for the fact that it required a lot of wiring and soldering. Now, Ben and Felix are going to take a look at what it would take to make their work the basis for an all-in-one PCB. It could live as a kickstarter kit where people simply buy the board, attach a screen, a Raspberry Pi A+, and a battery so they can then own their own Raspberry Pi No HDMI. This possible kit is life... Ben, you NEED to make this happen!! Maybe this PCB and kit can be the Ben Heck Swan Song!
id buy that board stuffed ^^ nice work gents! ^_^ i have a pi3 A+ aching to be a handheld device but im so lazy it hurts, this would be ideal for others like myself who kinda wanna do it without to much struggle 😄
I'd consider buying one if it was built around the Zero / Zero W board, but not the A+.
I don't see any reason why you can't just sub a zero-w, the pin header is the same, and with some tweaking of the device tree overlay, the PWM outputs can be brought out to the 40pin header. To do it right, the board would need RC filters, but I'd bet the audio amplifier has high and low pass filters builtin.
The benefit of the zero would be a change in form factor though, making it smaller, have a bigger battery, or better ergonomics. I agree in theory it might not be a big change to this project to accommodate one though.
what about compute module? wouldn't be even better?
you'd need a bit more of a breakout for audio from the Pi Zero if i'm not mistaken
I buy it too for Pi Zero/ Zero W
If the price isn't crazy I would buy a few. Please make it happen. Thanks.
YES I want it now.
With a smart looking case like the one you made as well.
I would buy one. Make it happen Ben! Great video!
I would totally dig one of these. I was considering trying the no HDMI build myself but I'm a total amateur at electronics. I'd love something a little bit more simple.
I love this project there are three ways I would market this one bare bone's PCB with a parts list two a complete kit not including pi or screen and three the way you spoke about in the show as I love soldering the kit would be for me, how soon can I get one 👍
I'd definitely buy one of these!
Now that you are designing your own PCB you should think about including an HDMI port as well. That would be awesome, having the option to play on displays as well. But overall tis awesome as usual, kudos to the entire team.
I would get one. Only thing is make for newer pie. Also would love the chance to pop board myself. Make a diy with component kit as well
Really surprised you took a build this far with an A+. It seemed like it was chosen originally because you had one on hand. A kickstarter kit should be using a newer PI!
YES. Please make it available in Europe too! Also, make an enclosure for it? Colors will be appreciated. Thanks!
Felix being upset at Ben misusing the software is classic
He looks so disappointed lol
Definitely want one, maybe more! Please Kickstart it! Really like to get my hands on a PCB & parts list at the very least let us buy the gerber files.
If it also came with the case I might get one, I like tinkering with electronics but I don't have space for a 3D printer and certainly not a C&C/Laser cutter
I'd be interested in the board if it came with a case as I don't have a 3d printer. Components could be pre installed or not but ideally a kit would be available if not to make ordering easier.
guys, your content is always amazing. next iteration of the board: support for rp3+ and clamshell design XD
I would buy one if your enclosure plans are available as well.
You added power, but no ground to the prototype area.
I would purchase several. Make a DIY kit with component bag for solder yourself and one pre-populated with needed components. Provide add-ons for Pi, case, battery, screen, STLs to print your own, extra board, extra component bag.
Depends what the final cost would be.
Also. If you would ship to the UK or not.
I would definitely buy one. Please do something with the oculus go!
Eagle tip: to move a group, instead of right-click + move group, you can control + right-click with the move tool selected. To delete or do most other actions to a group, you can control + left-click with the tool selected.
I like this, it feels like your old episodes :/
Id buy one if it was for compute module. Then you could have something even smaller and the equivalent to the Pi3
I'd totally buy one!!!
I would love to buy this as a kit from you guys ideally with all the components supplied and a small amount of documentation or a real time video showing Felix assembling it, and another with Ben showing troubleshooting techniques. I'd be happy with an STL file to print my own case, or order a print online from Shapeways. I feel like I've spent all year excitly ready to give you guys money for a Pinball kit, hot glue gun or game. So please let me buy *something* before you go. It would really make my year. Thanks!
To add to this- I'd love a signed card by Ben, Karen, Felix and the crew with the kit. Just as a physical momento of the show after it's gone.
Make one compatible with the Pi 3 board, and I'm quite interested. A portable Pi console playing all my old favorites would be wonderful. :)
I would certainly buy this kit if it is available...
Why you didn't use the newer and smaller pi zero?
Yes, would buy one. I'd like just the parts and would surface mount the parts myself..
I'd definitely buy one
Wish I could buy this. Looks like something I could do.
I would considering buying one.
i would definitely buy one!
Get this board stuffed with a battery and a screen for 75 and you supply your own pi and provide 3d printable case files this is a win. easily worth the $100-110
I'd like to see a board for the Zero / Zero W. I'd also like to see a BOM and bare PCB option.
I would be interested, but I think it would be fun to solder it myself!
Hi Ben, I have been dreaming of this day when you sold one of your projects. I would by 500 of these boards. Where can I buy. Thanks so much for all you have done over the years. Not sure but would you be willing to make a handheld Dreamcast for me as well? Take care.
What would happen if you needed a keyboard to get to the command line? Would you have to use usb? WiFi would be an option just in case you had to ssh into it.
I be interested in the kit.
I'd like one that is wired for the PI Zero W but where we can add our board for what buttons or what not we want. More generic than just for gaming.
I was looking for the Gerbers to order the board... I suppose a pre-pop'd board would be ok.
So what's happening with this project. I have been waiting for a long while to hear what they are planning to offer to people that want to order one. Any update?
With the Pi3A+ out now, this is relevant again. :D
Fusion 360 looks pretty cool, as the name suggests it looks like a fusion between AutoCAD and 3D animation software like Maya and 3DSMax.
Redesign it with the Zero W in mind, I would buy this kit!
definitely interested
Since Nintendo doesn't seem to be bringing us the Virtual Console, yes, I'd most likely buy one of these.
Felix has come out of his shell quite a bit over the past weeks. Good to see him more confident. Might want to focus on speaking up a bit more while talking with other members, as that still sometimes comes across as mumbling.
Ok so im an idiot when it comes to this stuff, if you are going to buy this as a kit what advantages would that offer over a handheld retro device you can get on amazon for 25 bucks that comes pre loaded with a bunch of games>? Is it just the challenge of making your own shell, or does the shell come in the kit too?
I have a question on the Raspberry Pi 3B on the front beside the gpi pines there's the point that says run what is that for
Would I but it? Heck yes!
I would definitely get a couple of kits, if made available
I do think that I would buy the kit
I'm in for one! Kickstarter maybe?
C'mon guys just do it. Totally interested :)
Yes I would buy!!! Please make this happen!!!
Would buy immediately
I'd buy one!
Waiting for a purchase link :D
Yes, I would buy it.
I would buy this. I’d like to see it built around a Zero (and be a touch smaller) or a 3 B+ (so it uses the latest and greatest). But I’d still buy it even if that wasn’t the case.
Hey you guys should build a visual pinball machine!! I did! It runs vpx.
Why dont you use Kicad? :( its soooo much better, even without f360 sinc. but at least in Kicad you can have a 3d board view and export that to a model file that f360 can open
I'd buy it!
Yes I would like to buy one but what about putting a joystick on it
Throw in the case too and yes I would buy it :)
Was this board ever made for sale?
I would buy it for sure. (Please make it happen, and low cost)
Id buy one if it were in the $50 USD Range...
Bought one of the Kites GameBoy Zero kits and never got it working due to the way the old version mated with the RPi. it hurts buying a $100 component and having it not work because you dont have a reflow oven. Soldering comes naturally to me but that kit was a nightmare trying to solder the RPi to that board.
I would buy it!!
I would Buy one Hands Down!!
Hey do you guys have a extra pcb. Where can i buy it please.
Wouldn't the Pi Zero or Compute Module be better suited then the Model A?
Both are smaller and more powerful, though the compute module would require additional io parts on your board due to having none of its own.
Yes. I would buy
yes id buy... for what price?
I'd buy it!!
very nice! id buy one
THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!!
Could you sell the parts and also sell the covers. Also can you try a different board like odroid-xu4 ? odroid-xu4 is like the pi but more powerful. Also what if we make it more cool by allowing people to do it as well ? Share the models
Very cool!
I would buy it!
Builds robot zen garden, robot achieves enlightenment and ascends to a higher plane...
I would sell it as a kit to be assembled.. with the pi and without it.. and with the case, maybe with a few overlays and one empty one (that the user could color by hand, or print on it and then apply it to the case... it would be awesome
What up coming episodes?
Yes, an enclosure too.
I'd much prefer this to be using a Pi Zero W along with a USB hub built in, I don't think too many people would care about the extra holes for additional circuitry. Always remember the less complicated you can make something the more people will want it.
Should sell it as a kit, I'd buy one
I would buy it, although I'd like to get an enclosure too.
Prestuffed, as a "buy-plug-put in a case"? Yeah, I would put 50€ on the table for one. 80€ if it included the screen and a battery, but maybe I'm pushing it a little too far, I don't know how much would the components cost you guys. Just don't get crazy with the shipping... should it work with a Pi 3, too?
why not go a little further and design it around the compute module?
If the price isn't crazy I would buy a few but please use the zero w
Would buy it! ;)
Not for the A boards, but if you had a z or 3 option, I'd probably get it.
I wish there was a more detailed explanation about why certain parts were put where and why there was a use of so many vias.
He explained in the video those vias were space for adding custom components to the PCB.
I would totally buy it. How about the FPS? can you get to 60 using this technique?
YES I WOULD BUY IT
Yes I would buy one assembled without the screen, pi and battery or as a kit. Please make it happen.
