For me those PSone screens are still ideal screens to use, the image quality (if you don't mind it being a bit of a mirror) improves a lot if the mesh is soaked off the LCD; very crisp image quality in contrast to stock. There appears to be a bit of interference on the screen, the video cable needs to be shielded to the screen to eliminate that.

If you guys are looking for the Z button/trigger, pause @13:10. You’ll notice that there is a little recessed area on the left shoulder button. That I believe is the Z button/trigger. Very intuitive design.

OmenBoy The screw is located just a little bit to the left when looking at it from behind. You get a better look at the design from the front @13:14. Look at the left shoulder button and compare it to the right one. You notice that the top of the left one has a square flat surface whereas the right one is completely rounded. Also, you’ll notice the part of the left button closest to the cartridge slot slopes inward slightly whereas the part of the right button closest to the cartridge slot stops at a flat angle. Maybe it’s just a variance in how the buttons were designed, but imo there are two presses underneath the left button. Pressing the slope of the left button will act as an “L” button press, while pressing the top of the left button will act as a “Z” button press. Then again, I could just be looking at the system wrong, but it can’t be coincidence that the left shoulder is shaped a little differently from the right shoulder.
exactly. i was thinking it would feel pretty normal to have the z back where your left index finger can reach since thats the finger that used it on the controller anyways. just recess it in a little or let it stick out and rest your finger on it.
I love this, it's amazing. Question though: how can I throw items in Mario Kart 64 without a Z-Button? Or is the L-button both? In that case, how can I do that without switching the UI? I'm just curious because I didn't see a Z-button and it stresses me for some reason.
Could you not save space by hardwiring an everdrive into the cartridge slot, without the cartridge shell, then mounting the SD card slot so that you can insert/remove the SD card through the outside of the case? I imagine that would be somewhat thinner than requiring space for the cartridges.
For the games that have different functions for the Z and L buttons, like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (I don't know if the others have too), how to use each one?
You can curve the one end of the fan dispenser, so more air will come towards the beginning, less towards the end. You can use smoke to see how the fan dispenser is dispensing the airflow. Even metallic paint allows for a better heat dissipation than just regular paint or plastic. Volume and brightness would probably be better as an analog rotary dial on the edges. Yes, this stuff would take an insane amount of time to do, but think of the watch time revenue at stake! ;-p
I don't suppose the STL files are available anywhere? This would be my dream but I don't have time or skilled to design it but I do have a 3d printer :-)
The Z button is the L button and quite frankly playing multiplayer with this thing would be horrible! I know I wouldn't want to play split screen with someone...I would know...I won it
Now all it needs is some custom cartridges with slightly new and modified games on them to do a slight stress test, a cartridge that allows ot to connect to the internet, maybe one that has a simple computer os, and video out.
Ben Heck, makes a whole episode redesigning the analogue stick and programming a chip specifically to use a different stick. Then 2 episodes later just casually says "i think we are going to just use the original analogue stick because we have enough room now"hahaha, i has to laugh at that, because we've all done similar things. That truly is trial and error and i love it as it shows that all this is done on the fly and not meticulously planned out or just copied from somewhere. I love these videos they are awesome!
Is there anyway to acquire the files needed to print out the case that Ben designed. I'm a OTR trucker (former electronic tech) looking for a project to do with my college aged sons during Christmas vacation. I would need to use a 3d printing house to purchase the casing. However, I have no idea where to acquire blueprints or files for a 3d printing. Anyone have any ideas?
Nigerian Prince They don't make the Shield anymore and it only works with Nvidia Cards. I think combining the Steam controller or XB1 controller with a screen and a Steam Link into a portable form factor is still a cool idea.
guys! I am new to raspberry pi electronics. I have question . I am trying to make a portable power supply for my raspberry pi 3 that would fit inside the case. So I am trying to power it with my GPIO pins. I had a few small portable batteries lying around, so I broke open one. I think that I could reuse the small circuit inside the portable battery, as it already has power input to charge the battery, led lights to indicate the charger and a usb outlet to supply(which i could remove the solder) and get the 5v and ground from there.... So this 5v and ground could go into the GPIO pins. This is just an idea but I dont know if that sounds feasible... Any advice?
My question is, will it freeze when you're walking or in a car on a bumpy road??? Because from my experiences with my 64 is the slightest bump or yanking the controller moving the console will freeze the game....
I know this is an older video. I just happened to watch another video on the Sega Nomad today. And I thought this might be even cooler (Not that it's not already one of the coolest systems and ideas I've seen in a while.), if you could add an a/v port to link this handheld to a tv by way of an a/v cable. But possibly a difference would be to switch off the handheld screen when a/v cable is detected. And adding a 64 controller port on the handheld, to add a second player (or using a connection like the wavebird for the gamecube console), just modifying a 64 in that way. This would keep it portable, and allow it as a home based console, like the switch.
Ignoring the amazing feat of cramming the entire N64 into a portable device, the design is pretty sweet. Not only does it feel deliciously retro, it actually looks like the N64!
Don't get me wrong, the final product is _amazing_ and I love it, but what's up with the 3d printed parts' layer lines not being smoothed out? I also don't get the blue plastic on the sides. Some case design critique: I would have made the case more ergonomic, switched the d-pad and joystick placement to be closer to the location of the joystick on an original N64 controller, and moved the speakers out from under the user's palms. I would have also rounded more of the corners and edges on the device. This is just personal preference, but I would have used a replacement N64 joystick; one of the aftermarket parts that is a modern joystick (that is less prone to breaking than an actual N64 joystick) that has been made to look like an original.
OK this has inspired me, now i'm wondering if it is possible to make a portable xbox 360 with kinect interface, not necessarily a handheld but a compact all in one that can be used when travelling.
I once built a backpack where I had a Genesis that was wired to a battery pack of a bunch of 9 volts. Had it ran up to an old camera I had that had av inputs for the screen. And of course not having any kind of av hook up for my Genesis, I gutted an old vcr and used the coaxal input and the av output to tv as a converter set up. In short I ended up with a back pack that had a cartridge slot and a screen and then 2 controllers running out the bottom. Open it up and it was just a massive ball of wires and batteries. Probably not the safest thing, but when I was a kid I was willing to do anything to play Sonic the hedgehog in school.
one thing one could have done was use a replacement part of a "N64 stick fix" - basically there is third parties making a fully nintendo 64 original controller compatible renewed stick parts using a smaller, modern style stick that does not wear down like the original N64 stick, and has less of a travel. I have one of these parts replacing utterly worn down stick in one of my N64 controllers and it jumped ahead my very great condition nintendo original stick in gameplay feel.
My old N64 had a third party rom expansion pack which worked with everything except on Majora's Mask, which would overhear after an hour. I played all through that game in 50 minute bursts!
the 64 was the last system i bought for myself, just didn't have the patience for loading screens that came with disc systems. i still have it from time to time i'll pull it out and play hydro thunder, pretty cool even still. nice project guy's good job.
Best thing about that portable 64 is that u can play for a very long time if you buy extra 18650 batteries which imo was the smartest thing to do by allowing the person access to the batteries ..
I saw someone build an N64 portble on RUclips a few years ago, with a case design that looked to be inspired by Darth Vader's helmet. It was pretty interesting, but your case design is much more in line with Nintendo's official handhelds. The lady at the ending was right, though - "Ocarina of Time" would be the ultimate test.
Really does make you appreciate the engineering that goes into our phones to make them so thin and powerful while having decent battery life and heat management.

- No ports for additional controllers, nor the controller-expansion ports
- Having a built-in save-game memory module was such a neat idea - sad to see it didn't make the final version (although many games get by with cartridge save alone)
- Maybe AV out / DC in should be available
Of course I don't seriously think people would want to play 4-player 007 on a tiny screen, but having ports for additional controllers (maybe through a breakout cable which could include a controller 1 override) would create compatibility for arbitrary add-ons - not just 1-4 memory blobs, but also stuff like Rumble Paks.
Yes, this stuff would take an insane amount of time to do, but think of the watch time revenue at stake! ;-p
I don't suppose the STL files are available anywhere?
This would be my dream but I don't have time or skilled to design it but I do have a 3d printer :-)
Not allowed in minecraft server it says HECK
ERNESTO ARREDONDO hi
Ha.
pls make a portable 3ds and ps vita PLEASE
+100000
Aren't they already portable? Or am I missing something?
Whooosh
@@kobalt_ren01 whoosh

Ok cool, but what about multiplayer?? Also I didn't see the z button.
The Z button is the L button and quite frankly playing multiplayer with this thing would be horrible! I know I wouldn't want to play split screen with someone...I would know...I won it
Just play multiplayer on an actual N64.
@@DanielAyy omg thank you. No one is listening to me!
What happened to the wonderful analog stick you made in one of the previous videos instead of the original optical one?
Where is the rumble pad, memory card slot or controller ports?
Do the Nintendo switch version of the Xbox one
For the shell u should have 3d printed a n64 controller and put a screen in the middle
Bradly Gamelle boring
Omney Pixel ? How
Bradly Gamelle just a copy of a generic Nintendo switch
That would have been pretty cool, almost anything would be cooler than the big block of rectangle look it has now.
someone has made that before
Portable Wii U
Fair enough that would be a pain In the ass though
It already exists
Can you do a portable Nintendo Swi- oh wait...
can you sell this i would like to have one of this
Now make a portable Nintendo Switch
lol
nintendo switch in a nutshell
xGODSLAYERx [GD] no shit
xGODSLAYERx [GD] y u du dis?
It IS portable
Is there anyway to acquire the files needed to print out the case that Ben designed. I'm a OTR trucker (former electronic tech) looking for a project to do with my college aged sons during Christmas vacation. I would need to use a 3d printing house to purchase the casing. However, I have no idea where to acquire blueprints or files for a 3d printing. Anyone have any ideas?
@12:12 is that Tiko gem blue PLA? Most expensive filement I ever bought 😔
JUST SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
makes a n64 portable with new everything and puts the same shitty analog stick on it
George Boulden I Like The Analog stick on the n64
Ok , settled , I'm buying everyone who agrees with this man a beer
The only thing shitty about the N64 stick is that it wears down over time. I'm gonna guess that's what happened to yours and you don't realise.
It will be nice to see someone replicate the N64 in portable without destroying retro consoles.
YankeeSpirit it's not destroyed though really, it's been given a new lease of life
Well, he destroyed about 3 or 4 N64 boards before he managed to get this one working;
You the retro gaming police? He bought it...he can piss on it worth I care.
YankeeSpirit What’s he supposed to do lol? Build one from scratch?
YankeeSpirit why don’t you do it
You sir, are one talented chap. I love watching you make these things. Thank you. All The best
The only thing I didn't see you is where did you put the Z trigger?
I'm soo triggered right now😋😉
No Z-trigger and no controller-pak/rumblepak accessbility ? Anyway this is still very good even if it is missing those things...
It’s NOT missing the Z-trigger. L is Z in this portable.
Portable wii
gamerplay Nintendo fan succes making it😂😂
gamerplay Nintendo fan look in bitbuilt forms and look all the Wii portable stuff people made and look up gmanmodz on RUclips
its called a nintendo switch
Lol
If you have a power supply the Wii u is portable the Wii u tablet has a sensor bar built in
Steam link portable
Agreed, this is a project I'd love to do myself but I have little/no technical know-how or experience, would love to see Ben and Co take it on first!
Kush Shah that is an awesome idea, but it's not that hard
Chaslasher H Exactly. It'd be a cool quick project repeatable and interesting.
Any advice?
Is there a STL for 3D printing the case?
Gimmy plese :o, and where is the z button?
Roo Lol I commented about where is the Z button too 😂
RandomCatDude then where is the L button? Same thing, he fucked up the controls, so plenty of unplayable games I guess xD
THE L BUTTON IS THE FUCKING LEFT SHOULDER BUTTON.
Haha how can you be that dumb? Its the shoulder buttons
ben ward so the left shoulder is L and Z? How does that even work
Nintendo 64 (Wii u portable edition)
That woman do anything other than act like a cringey tween?
My question is, will it freeze when you're walking or in a car on a bumpy road??? Because from my experiences with my 64 is the slightest bump or yanking the controller moving the console will freeze the game....
Neat, does it have a slot for the different controller paks too?
Take that lady off your show. She is so lame.
DIY MAN it’s probably his wife dumbass
99% negative comments.
Congrats, gotta love yt.
(The project is impressive and turned out very well!)
I would love to purchased one since i dnt have the skills to build one myself please inform me on how i can get a hold of one
So now that its made and the process is set. How much for one?
When desoldering something you can melt the solder and use compressed air to blow the melted solder away.
Where is the Z trigger and the Memory Pack slot?
I don't know if I am overlooking but where did the Z Trigger get put?
one thing one could have done was use a replacement part of a "N64 stick fix" - basically there is third parties making a fully nintendo 64 original controller compatible renewed stick parts using a smaller, modern style stick that does not wear down like the original N64 stick, and has less of a travel.
Does Gardian Legons work? Used many emulators with failure, does it work?
the 64 was the last system i bought for myself, just didn't have the patience for loading screens that came with disc systems. i still have it from time to time i'll pull it out and play hydro thunder, pretty cool even still. nice project guy's good job.
Best thing about that portable 64 is that u can play for a very long time if you buy extra 18650 batteries which imo was the smartest thing to do by allowing the person access to the batteries ..
if you build another one, I will buy it, I only request that you add an additional button on the back left for Z-trigger so you can have L R and Z.
