University of the People - My Studies So Far (1.5 Years In)

- This video addresses the aspects of University of the People that frustrate me, as well as how my studies have gone so far, generally-speaking. Despite these frustrations, I am still very happy at this school!
I am calling out to graduates to discuss their experiences finding jobs, or how they are perceived in the job market.
Great discussion of the pros and cons of the UofP. Thanks for taking the time to share your personal experiences. I have been a FT, senior university professor in a large traditional university in the US for 37 years. This whole concept of helping people who could never attend an expensive university is worth considering.
I will complete my degree at a traditional college this fall. I plan on going to graduate school at a traditional college. But I very much am willing to support and promote the concept of UoP. When I am done with my Masters, I plan on taking a different major at UoP. Just for the knowledge, since I won't be trading solely on that degree. I think this concept finally brings college within the grasp of poor students.
Rooting for you, Katherine, and all the dedicated students of UoPeople. I'm excited to be one of you guys.
Thanks for your raw and honest insider's feedback. This really helps a lot.
That’s very interesting but then in a real class how often does everyone discuss anything.
I know I am late to the party, but I'm researching UoP and if a degree from there will work for me. I am 52 and have never been to college- I'm very nervous about the prospect because I doubt my intelligence, But I made my dad a promise many years ago that I would get a degree somehow someday, and I pride myself on keeping my word. The irony in this is that my husband is a PHD and an online professor. So I have a front-row seat to what a professor In this type of class thinks and feels. (His frustrations are much the same as yours- He is a professor who actually cares. Oh- and a tip: READ THE PROFESSOR'S COURSE NOTES! He didn't make those to fill space!)
So my reason for this long dialogue is to ask this: Do you think my many years of practical experience on this earth combined with utter lack of college experience would make me an acceptable candidate for UoP? Or is it geared towards younger humans in general?
Thanks for your comment, Nancy! I have been in class with students of all ages, and I think the diversity is one of the best parts of the school! I'm no spring chicken, either (I'm 33), so I am also over the age of the traditional college-age student. I think that's wonderful that you want to keep your promise to your dad! I think if you enroll, it will really enrich your life. I wish you good luck!
Sincerely,
Katie
I also want a degree. For same reasons as you. Your husband is phd and a professor, your doing ok aren’t you, he could probably help you with study a bonus🙃
@@jayangli I am hoping he'll be some kind of assistance, but he's pretty busy so I think I'll be on my own most of the time. ;-)
@@NancyAnneMartin oh ok. I been looking at other distance learning courses. Now, looking at uop, although they are mainly tuition free. However, they seem rather rigorous in their course, the exams and proctored exams do not seem easy. I suppose its like any other university course.
@@NancyAnneMartin Hey Nancy I was looking through these Peoples University videos and came across your comment. I was wondering if you decided to apply and how things turned out for you. I dont know but it kinda hit me that you said you doubt your intelligence. I hope that view of yourself has changes. Everyone has something good to offer in this world🙂
Very interesting and honest feedback. Thank you for sharing! Keep up the great work!
By the way, I love Coursera as well and have done about a dozen of courses, that’s why I can 100% relate to what you explained. I’m planning to enroll for the MBA in Management from UoPeople in Feb 2019. Already enrolled and talked to my advisor about my application process. UoPeople definitely caters to students who can’t attend brick and mortar schools due to work and other responsibilities.
Excited to watch your other vids.
Thank you for sharing your perspective.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I wish you the best of luck in your studies!
OMG! I'm taking classes at U of P right now and the discussions are my frustration! Now, I get that there are students from all over the world and English is their second language but it's becoming ridiculous. You have people posting long responses and the writing makes no sense! Meanwhile, I spend so much time making sure that I'm using college level writing and formatting. The misspellings and crazy bad grammar is making the school seem subpar to me. This is supposed to be a "University". I thought there were English requirements to get into the school. I thought this was a revolutionary school but now I'm starting to feel like I'm getting what I paid for. I'm starting to feel discouraged and seriously considering dropping out and going to a more reputable university.
Just dropped out after a year because of this and other issues.
Thank you so much Katherine for stepping in and making such a video... Time really flies you will make it to the end I can feel it; just be encouraged. Your degree will just comply with your character and attitude.(You're very optimistic, and that all you need)...
I am on community and public health major at UoPeople as well (approx.1.5 years so far). My motivation was mostly boosted from your previous video about a year ago or more.
I am very grateful to you.
Thierry Nkwansambu Thank you sharing that with me. We can do it!
Hahaha!! She's so disciplined! She didn't answer the bell🕭 Love her vibes 🚣
Is this degree is valued like US University degree?? Can I apply for job With this degree??
@maloy barai
It depends entirely on the employer. For example, my brother got a degree from a school called "Pensacola Christian College". This is a well established, fully accredited college. And yet, when he graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering, he had a nightmare of a time getting a job since the name of the college didn't carry any weight. So the answer to your question is "maybe". If you're lucky, and employer might take a chance on you with a degree from "University of the People". Otherwise, I feel they might view it with animosity.
I got a 6 figure IT management job in the US with a degree from the University of the People. It's also accepted by SpaceX as a valid degree - it's right on their application web page.
@@Jimmyatsea how long did it take you to finish your degree?
AS in about 30 months.
James Logan why?? Not 4 years?
How are the courses taught?
Hi, thank you so much for sharing your point of view on this university. I’m considering joining their MBA program. I was having second thoughts based on other reviews, but what your perspective offered that the others didn’t was that you can get the benefits of this university if you put in the work. That’s all I needed to hear.
The mentally disabled professor who reports you for plagiarism when it's your own work when he sees his name and calls you hi student, what discrimination and disrespect!

It has been identified that there was error in the grading criteria applied to the Unit 2 Portfolio Assignment. Correction of the error is in process. The updated assessments should be completed and posted by end of day on Monday, July 5.
I apologize for the error and resulting confusion that led to you submitting a revised assignment.

2"I trust this email finds you doing well. I want to review the requirements for the peer assessment process. In reviewing your peer assessments for week 1, I noticed very few of the aspects have comments. Those with comments are quite brief, two or three words. To provide valuable feedback, comments are required for each aspect in addition to the numeric assessment. The comments should contain sufficient detail to substantiate the numeric rating and provide guidance on how the student can improve. Going forward, make sure to include comments for each aspect that substantiates the numeric rating and provides guidance on how to improve. Summary comments on your overall impression of the student's work are helpful as well.
Remember, feedback is a gift.

i have completed my master degree in physiotherapy and working in NGO as clinical physiotherapist and researcher in conducting clinical trial of assistive device for people with disability from past 10 years, i have tried many institutes in India and aboard for master degree in Public health for distance model, but i found lots of university offer regularly full time course with expensive tuition fee. would suggest me Associate degree on public health from University of people suits for my professional and education background?
My professional aim is to work for International non -profit organisations like WHO, ICRC, UN, UNICEF, ... does this degree is suitable or acceptable for this organisations?
I am debating University of the People. I am 51 and have a BA in English. I work as a substitute teacher, but I want to teach full time. I am interested in the Master of Education program. I realize it doesn't lead to certification, but I feel the courses may help me with my teaching skills. But I also wonder if this degree program is geared for people who are already certified, teaching full time.
Dear sir please how I can get my modules and assignment schedule , appointment New MBA student from Ethiopia Wolayta Sodo city.
@Katherine Mays Kudos and congratulations. I appreciate your review. I took one class the the university.
I want to thank you so much for sharing your story. I saw UOP and thought it was too good to be true. I will be graduating soon with my bachelors in Nursing, but would like to pursue a different career path. I'm thousands of dollars in debt and have applied to UOP.
brittney stanton Oh my! I think in the long run, if you're not happy with your chosen career, looking for other options is a good decision. Plus, maybe you'll find a career that's a medley of the skills you obtain from UoPeople and the aspects of nursing that you like, so it'll be a win-win! Good luck with your future studies!
Thanks, same to you! I get where you are coming from with online discussions too. We have those in my current online program and you see people getting full credit for nonsense posts.
This is not the first time I've heard someone not like nursing. It's very stressful work.
the people that need hand holding but don't seek out help are mostly those who have been screwed over by their parents and cultural upbringing. Modern society of the last generation or two praised mediocrity and trying new things while growing up and made things easier for the kids than how the parents grew up because the hard lessons sucked to experience, yet they're precisely what made the parents the way they are as properly functional members of society. The trying new things is about the only good change in parenting, inspired by the sight of man walking on the moon and other things that widened the parents eyes to possibilities that seemed impossible before.
My comments is about your complains about students only: not all students can show their motivation in the same way. we have always different type of students and when you start an educational journey you have to be ready to face it. University is not only for very intelligent or perfect people. just get use to it.
You are doing great. I think your domain for your channel should be passing your experiences in UoPeople to others. With your videos, someone who is not part of the university would get a sense what it would be like being a student in UoPeople. Personally, as I am CS student for last 1.5 years, I would like to hear more CS related from you. I don't know if it would be allowed but going through programming assignments and what you did, how you did would be something?? Thanks.
Mehmet Guney That's a good idea for videos going forward. I have always wanted to help out with teaching. Next term, I'm taking programming 2 so I'll try to make a video or two about some things I learned! Thanks for the idea!
i think affordable school that not means bad school system so I think UoPpl need to fix it, others pay for it and not completely free
please, can you tell me more about the curriculum and an inside view of the courses and lecturers who make them are they filmed or live?

Can you give us an update?
Some serious highs and lows at this university so far. I enjoy the courses and get excited when I start, but the peer grading thing might make me quit one day. Students get a power rush halfway through a course, and you have no way to defend your point if they get grading wrong because they don't read properly or don't know the work. So you have to email the instructor and it's a whole process. With some courses, it feels like the more effort you put into an assignment, the lower your score, so why bother? They need to fix this. Maybe make peer grading count no more than 10%? I spend days grading students who don't make the effort, searching for points to give them (for limited effort or plagiarized work). If you just can't give a good grade or comment something good because they didn't answer questions at all, you get lower scores on your grading too. So frustrating!
Absolutely, I agree 100%. This term has been especially frustrating for me because it seems like 75% of the students don't do the readings and put forth minimal effort. In other courses, I get the majority of students who are very bright and try really hard and those are wonderful. You really do have to take the good with the bad. I refuse to let the frustrations get the best of me though. I won't quit no matter what. I am trying to keep the attitude where I focus on myself and what I'm doing because you can't control what others do. The benefits are still really amazing, in my opinion. It is my hope, Robin, that you try to keep your spirits up and I know you'll get through the frustrations, too. Thank you for sharing your experiences! I really appreciate you stopping by!
Thanks for your comment. I put a LOT of effort into it and in the end I know it will be worth it. I just wish it could be more fair. I think the peer grading thing is exactly why students don't put much effort into it. Why bother? Very counterproductive.
Hi Katherine. What is peer grading? Is it like that in business administration? Also to entry, they want people complete high school. Wouldn’t it be different from which country people are from? I finished high school with bad grades, continued to college(education after high school not university) for a year then did a two year business course, that is higher than high school in th uk. Would that usually be enough to attend uop??
@@jayangli Hey there! You can transfer credits to the university for a fee, so if you have external credits, transferring them will likely enable you to skip some courses, especially if you took business courses and want to go for business administration. The peer grading is that everyone submits their assignments and then they grade three other students' work based on established guidelines.
peer grading in the business bachelors too? hm, you see that also put me off from this university
Katherine, in your understanding, does UoPeople accept a GED for their high school graduation requirement to enroll? I have a GED, and hope to pursue an education.
When it comes to online it is interesting that, at least in every online classroom you will get discussion posts. Now, in the topic of procrastination everyone at some point did that. Your frustration is nothing new. Just like in every other real classroom you will notice some people doing better than others.
The fact that you are worried and indignant at other students cheating and not taking their studies seriously, totally shows you are a great student and a future great professional. Dishonest students can trick others but they can't trick themselves and that eventually will be noticed. I support you all the way! Great video! I just heard you don't use Yammer :( Please show me your email.
i appreciate for honest feedback thank you
I’m going to study at this University, too. In June I start English, because I’m non-native. And If I pass an exam, I will start Computer science and technology. Actually, it’s new for me. I worked with Wordpress, some blogging, but I’ve never do real programming. I decided to choose this major, because I would like to work abroad (to get working visa- I need bachelor degree), I want to work online from time to time; and I wanted to try something new... because all over the time I had some fears in this major. I have graduated college of Finance and Economics, but I want to try something new.
Did you pass the English composition 1?
Hey Kate. I'm senior CS. I have one more elective course to go for the 4th term and I'm graduate. Live communication with peers is the most handicapped part I totally agree. Maybe you can share at the course forum your daily online hours and keep a browser tab open for video-conferencing at those times (I use appear.in; so no need to share your personal details if you don't want). If some peer available and aware of your anouncement, can come and join you for a shared study or chit chat to feel a bit more humane. By the way, good to see that you are still holding up.
What did you major in?
I did online school with westwood college online. I wasnt too please with it however students not posting quality content seems to be common amongst most online sources.
Thanks Katherine for sharing your experience. I can really use that!
You are one of the best motivators, thank you, you convinced me as well to restart my eduction.
Thank you for your time to make this video, It really helps to get the ideas on how UOP works before I enroll.
I loved the school but here are my 2 issues.
1. I'm not into yammer either. The only thing I really don't care for is the peer assessment. I believe there should be a system where the answers submitted should be anonymous. You shouldn't be able to chose who to rate either. It should be randomized. This causes a bias and you may be giving this person a high rank because you have a rapport with them.
2. The professor says to use citations when you paraphrase. Of course this is done to avoid plagiarism. They professor didn't say it was mandatory to use sources abd citations. A lot of the students misunderstand this. I am bored with people paraphrasing and using citations. Anyone can use Wikipedia, switch some of the words around and use citations. Why not write from your own experience or your interpretation? It's boring to read and shows lack of creativity. It was guy who answered the question and he used his experience as an answer. No he didn't use citations or paraphrase because he used own experience. There were 2 students that gave him a low rating because he didn't use citations.
Same thing am experiencing with peer assessment. Many student give me low rating simply because I did not use end of text reference. Even after explaining to them that it was because I used my idea, they won't still understand
If it's general knowledge, no need for citations.
i am a Sparta, can that right for me?
I agree with your description of the discussions; some people take it seriously, some don't. The discussions and the assessments are the most frustrating assignments each week.
What r u studying??
I think one of the reasons is time constraints. Most of the students here are working, struggling with their time in making 3 assignments per wk plus peer review.
@@rena-jj9mb It's that and the monotony of the assignments. Every class is exactly the same, they could keep up with the times; online learning is so much more dynamic than just reading chapters and writing a paper each week.
Hi love! I just finished my first term. I took two classes. Congratulations on reaching for your dreams! (I'm the one who has been in the field for 15 years and never got the degree)
what field is that? you mean job you are in.
Me too! I understand what that is like! I work since I was a teen and never got a degree! So great you now get one! Good luck!
I m searching university for study. Could you plz tell me how mach total cost?? And how to get certificat??
It's $100 a class and I believe they also have scholarships to help pay that.
I am new to the MBA program so I can't give UoPeople MBA career advice. However, by looking at our MBA content and the MBA bills elsewhere, I totally recommend the UoPeople MBA program even I just get started. I always like school. Don't want to be a weird dude. But I find you a very good looking woman that I would love to study with for life.
:)
Question how long did it take you to complete general courses before you start your co-class at the university of the people thank you for talking about your experiences so far.
Great question! I actually transferred some credits I earned from other universities, so it took me a little less time to complete the general credits. Another factor you should consider is your course load. They recommend two courses per term at about 15 hours per week per class, but you can do more or less as your schedule permits. Some of the more advanced classes I would recommend taking by themselves if you're a working professional or have other commitments that would prevent you from giving your full attention to a larger load. At the "recommended" pace, a full bachelor's degree is possible in four years, but I'm finding that it is better to take your time and really learn the material rather than rush through everything as quickly as possible. That would be my advice.
I like you and the honesty level you comunicante. Thank you for sharing. The bad thing about this that I was planning to apply to UoPeople for Businness Administration next week, now, I'm not sure if I should do that. I am a little frustraded :(
Thanks , for this advice
sorry to ask, but can you tell me how are they teaching it?
Is it a video of group and the teacher is standing in front of the door or how?
I am just wondering. thanks
Don't be sorry! The classes are entirely online. Sometimes there are videos which are pretty helpful but there aren't videos for every class. You're given materials to study, and you engage with other students in the discussion forum weekly. Then you have assignments and quizzes (graded and not graded) throughout the course. It is a lot of individual study for the most part, but there are tons of cool resources online. There's no part of the program that requires video interaction from students. The benefits of UoPeople versus learning on your own are: participating in a structured program that grants a degree and the other students that are all learning the same things as you. Most of the teachers I've had so far really did a good job with encouragement also. The curriculum is also very relevant to help you learn about cutting-edge stuff!
I hope that answers your question!
Katherine Mays thank you so much for your reply, and honestly you’v been amazing through out the video, you really give me kind of hope and hope to others as well, because I’ve been researching and it sounds not so bad but still I was like I need to hear this from a honest person so that I can find comfort.
I watched a few videos before your video but non of them were as great as you explained. So yeah thank you so much and wish you the best of luck.
Like your thoughts and ideas, and how sincere your are so I hope that all of us try the same.
Thank you so much!
@@karimoriakhel8287 You're so kind! Thank you! I have been working on more content but honestly I've been feeling anxious about being so personal. However you inspire me to be brave so I'll make the video for sure after the end of finals week this week. :)
Katherine Mays have a good luck with it
I totally agree with you, are you in Yammer? If you are, please show me how to find you
I don't think I would fit in. The last time I was in school online learning wasn't a thing because the internet hadn't been invented yet. I remember my first writing assignment and the professor said to write an essay on a particular topic and it had to be at least 500 words. I thought it was a typo and she meant 5000 words and just to be on the safe side I wrote 10,000 words and included citations, annotations and an index. She was NOT happy as it took her two days to grade my essay. I got a 97 so I was happy but she told me I wasn't allowed to write anything at all for the rest of the semester.
Happy for watching your new video.
👏🎉🎊
I love your video! Well done telling this to all! Really a good idea to make more videos as University of the People students.
Also, I think Americans had a better k12, and other education before the University of the People than for example we Dutch had, thus I now learn how you want me to respond. I love how Americans are taught to work so well. I find finally people that want to work as hard, minus the ones you mention in the video. I think you realize more about the real world. You might make a very good course on that point you have, perhaps on our university. Lessons about to fulfill the role in the world, and why we must do so well. You really understand well how we learn how to do well later on.
I am sorry it frustrates you and others how people can respond. I am frustrated too by unfair grading. I also try my best and follow the assignment. I do still need a lot more time to create a good discussion post, to be honest, and end up late. But also, most grades are better if you end up later, as at the beginning more people can respond also with unfair grades. So, it would be nice if professors check more actively in fair grading and arent unfair themselves too, as some are.
We all also have a free course on peer grading so mistakes should not be possible. It seems like some didn't do the course, or that some along the way learned from other courses to respond differently. Some professors ask us to just respond with a question, or some do not ask us to make it like the written assignments, and others do make it like another written assignment. I agree some are phenomenal indeed. I learn a lot in any way. I just want to keep my GPA up, the entire way, and peer grading still frustrates me a lot, it can be suddenly so unfair. I hope it gets better along the way. I btw never had the plagiarism yet. So, maybe that happened more before, than now. Or I was lucky to not have had such a situation yet.
I like to get to know you through your videos, we might meet in class! Good luck if you still study here! It will be nice to see what you will do after your degree.
Also, I think, we all should try to talk about this, and join you on youtube! There are now 100k+ students lots can want to do things on RUclips too. So, we might have 100k friends to be fun RUclipsrs with too besides our studies. You might be a good leader for that as you have good ideas and know what the purpose is of getting online and share what we learn, and you know well what that means to take the information and processing of the information we learn from study to the actual work. How all depend on us later on.
So, we all might become something special on RUclips. I will think too about what I can do to join.
Again, great video!
The portfolio we can perhaps like health science RUclipsrs. Also, process all the information and create articles, or even journal articles for scientific magazines. I published in frontiers already. Also on Academia, we all can start to write and peer review. Also, they can join APA, the American Psychological Association because psychology is a major in the study we do. So, they can also peer review in divisions of that. I did too already a few. We will grow into it. We can also look at our specializations and create work for that. I am making environmental science tours and lessons for people to do while traveling for tourists and kids.
Do students have the opportunity to work in America when I graduate from university? but I generally appreciate this initiative.
That is a very true reflection of most of us who are still new to the program. Though it is very challenging, I think with much determination and endurance you will soon find your feet and do away with the procrastination and work your way through the courses.
Loved your presentation! Im starting soon. Would love to connect! Great vibes with you ❣
I wish you the best of luck in your studies! So exited for you!
Thank you for this video. I signed up in the middle of the night then totally freaked out thinking it was a scam. I agree with your thoughts. Being international I am sure the difference in basic education strategies around the world is thrown into the fore front. Sadly most of what your descibing is the educational approach of many developing countries where cramming and teacher centred learning is what students are used to. It is sometimes all that they know.
Hi Kate! Kudos to you for your impact. Would like to motivate you on this great job. Do mesage me. You have a limelight to excel.

Can you still get a grant here...? My greed is really my only obstacle from joining immediately.
No, you can't apply for financial aid grants, under this school.
I wonder I would like to join in UOP how much cost to study for a bachelor degree?
best wishes to you Katherine. never give up!
it is Free or you have to pay weekly? thanks Katherine..
I'm curious how you imagined the fee would be a recurring charge. Is that common where you're from? The fee is $100 per undergraduate course, and it is due before the final exam period is over.
@@katherinemays9856 "Is that common where you're from?" = what you mean by this statement ? I'm just asking about the Fee... Maybe I can help others... but your mentality and judgement toward other ppl country is rude... maybe it's your nature or white ppl nature.. well, Nevermind, thanks of answering...
@@rozlanjoe4143 Huh? I meant no judgment at all, I was genuinely curious about the fee structures where you're from. The way people pay for their education is interesting to me. I'm sorry if I've caused you to feel judged because that wasn't my intention.
@Katherine Mays don't feel judged I think you expressed yourself correctly, at least I totally understood what you were asking and as a citizen from a third world country I wouldn't take any offense whatsoever. Just to answer your question, I mean obviously I don't know how it works everywhere but at least I can give you an insight of the places I have been just to give you an idea. I'm originally from Argentina and the education system there is completely free so you could basically be homeless but still make it to university, and the education provided is not bad I'm aware of people coming from neighbor countries just to receive this free education. Another country I lived for seven years is Spain, over there you pay by credits you complete and a full time student is expected to complete 120 credits per year and the last time I checked a normal social science degree were charging around 10 euros per credit, I know it doesn't sound a lot comparing to the US but if you add the enrollment fees and other administrative fees it could be a few thousands a year and having in mind that an average monthly wage is around 800 euros a month it does add up and sadly only the ones that are "privileged" end up going. Also the last three years I lived in Scotland and I can tell you hands up that was the best country when it comes to studying because it is first world class and it is completely free (yeeeyy) but to the locals, so you need to live there a few years to earn that right but still pretty amazing they even have living grants in case you are struggling to make ends meet while juggling work and studying, you get tax reductions while studying and things like that so it's quite awesome to be a student in Scotland. Now finally but not least I'm living in Australia and here sadly you pay for your degree education, and the type of visa and nationality you hold will determine how much and in the unlucky one as my visa will class me as an international student so I'm looking at around 28.000 a year on school fees and that's how I came across UoPeople, I totally regret not staying in Scotland a little bit longer and studying there but hey that's how life goes and now I'm just going to try and make the most of what I can. I hope I haven't bored you with all this! And I wanted to thank you for making this video, I wanted to ask you since we are discussing fees, how often do you pay for your exams? I fear that I might struggle this year as I'm not currently working but I'm not sure if I will qualify for scholarship as I don't live in a third world country anymore, so is it quite often that you complete exams as a full time student? I hope I made sense in all this rant as I'm writing this while watching your video and trying to pay attention to both lol anyway have a great day and thank you for reading :)
@@michellegatti6323 Wow I am completely blown away by your reply. This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping to hear when I asked! It seems you are a world traveler and the experiences you're sharing with us are quite wonderful to hear! Thank you so much for visiting my channel!
Sincerely,
Katie
dont apologise Kathrine you did a great job
How long does it take to finish a degree? Please
Depends on your major and the degree you want. Associates 2 years bachelor's 4
thank for the description of the discussion of today we understanding as well you as like i attend the class so for this more discussion i am very glad for all student to participate in the lesson. today for my first time to start my class am now a member of the uopeopl, so for more information that is consent to students we are discussion online,
What about examination we can give from our own way or university will choose some place to give exam.
I’m about to start my M.Ed at UoP. Any heads up?
I think that you have more issues due to the Computer Science major that you have chosen. More international students have chosen that major.
How long does it take to complete a Bachelor degree?
Katherine, you're really not doing the school any favors by painting a visual that all the students cheat at UoP.
Hmm, I'm sorry if my message came across that way. I do however know that the school is in the process of having the system automatically scan submitted assignments for plagiarism, so hopefully the cheating that is happening can stop. I'm excited for this news!
Hello nice video! Is the degree recognized?
Hey, Katherine, thanks for sharing the journey of studying at Uopeole. I would like to take a Bachelor degree in Health Science, but once I choose this field, I will go on to postgraduate studies. My concern is that if I come out of this programme, will be able to get into some of the prestigious Universities in the US? I have no idea if you have studied it? if you did some research for it, I will appreciate that you can tell more about it. thank you so much!!
It’s been three years, did you ever take the program?
Do you have any video update?
All the way demanding 60$
Hi Katherine,
I'm a colleague of yours from UoPeople. I wish I could talk to you about some concerns and thoughts I have on the school, based on my experience thus far... Would you be available for a chat one of these days? I just followed you on twitter too.
Thanks!
Hi, can you give a brief overview of the pros and cons of UoP?
Are the classes just like a ZoomClass? Where all the students are live with the professor
Hi Katherine,
I recently joined UoP for an associates in CS. My situation is a bit different, I already have a doctorate degree in Music from U of Miami, and I’m working in my field.
But I am really interested in programming, and I wanted to have a structured degree in addition to the online courses I’m taking in Python and C++. Not interested in working as a software engineer, but I am doing all the coding for a video game project currently, and hope I’ll learn a lot more at UofP.
Looking forward to my first term in September!
Katherine! Thank you for your video!
thank you for posting your review
I have taken Coursera classes as well as online classes thru community college as well as a few at the BA level from a brick and mortar school. I am not a UOPple student and don't really think I will be. The reason why is this; on average, the other students don't seem as serious and committed as I would like and the "professors" (or volunteer teachers) aren't readily available when needed. I have heard that grading is partially based on feedback from other students. This is kind of how it goes with Coursera as well. I have found, that the English proficiency professed by these students isn't always up to par with their claims (and I am an EFL teacher). I have heard that about classes at UOPple as well. Also, those course books are often incomplete and there are no real lectures or supplemental material in case something doesn't make sense, you rely on each other, which could be the wrong information. Furthermore, the tests are based on the quizzes verbatim and many are re-takable indefinitely. How can it even count? Compare that with even community college online classes (my sister is currently taking classes for Accounting - very rigorous), and it's night and day. The professor assigns and grades book work (sometimes from a physical book, sometimes digital) and essays, responds to board posts and emails, and only allows for one or two test attempts. It is sometimes easy to fail, I found my CC Spanish class harder than a four-year university one. However, it is undisputed to be a worthwhile investment and about the same cost as an online-only school. So much so that I have taken CC classes from at least 3 2-year colleges, sometimes just for fun without a degree. It seems to me that with this and other online schools, it is for degree seekers only who often want an easy way (or come from a place where they believe they have no other option (which is also not true). As an American, knowing that others in my industry may not see an MA degree from this school in a good light, and knowing that other students and the lack of guidance from a professor could hold me back (my best resource from graduating from a brick and mortar school was and still is my advisor and program mentor whom I'm still friends with and who I still use on job/school applications 4 years later .) Sadly, College is often about connections made while attending, and this kind of school provides none.
Thank you for your honest assessment of UoP. Good points made.
Thank you for posting this video, you did great. It can be nerve wrecking doing live post and videos. I think the thing that is missing not only on this video but in all the research I've done myself as well about this University.
Point blank... is this a legitimate University, legitimate degrees that can be used in the United States. Can you leave with this degree and it be looked at and verified as an accredited degree program and be hired based on it. Can I take this degree and get a job at IBM or Deloitte or a Hospital or a mid sized company? Not the character that comes with the person ( that's another discussion) but on paper (like with a resume)? This is why I ask.
We live in a matrix( lol) a system. People, places and things are connected weather we want them to be or not and weather we understand or know the exact connection or not. Where are the graduates? Where are they working? Where are their experiences? I feel this is a University primarily for people that have limited access to education outside the US and that's not a bad thing, it's great. But will I, with no story of being a refugee or seeking asylum or being in the Sudan or transferring credits from a foreign school... really be able to use this degree. Is it worth the time, effort and tuition free environment based on the end result? That is the question that no one is answering. I've looked everywhere. Schools is what you make it, there are obstacles just as in life, No problem there. Discussion boards, classmates etc those are people...but the Degree is the concern.
I agree that the value of a UoPeople degree is not well known, and little discussed. I think the reason is that few students know whether a UoPeople degree is valuable or not. I can't tell you how companies value a UoPeople degree, because I haven't applied to any companies with a UoPeople degree. That is the only way to find out what employers think of these degrees. I do know that almost no other universities will accept UoPeople transfer credits, and a UoPeople bachelor's degree will not be recognized as an "accredited undergrad degree" by graduate schools. The accreditation of UoPeople is substandard in the eyes of nearly all other American universities. I know this by making very many calls to admissions offices of American universities. My guess is that many employers will consider the UoPeople degree to be suspect and some will think it worthless.
The only accreditation that U of P has is through the Distance Education Accreditation Commission (DEAC), which makes it a legit school in the US. However, other schools are accredited through councils that are in the specialized problem. U of P doesn't have this. For example, some business schools are accredited through AACSB, ACBSP, and IACBE, in addition to DEAC and the Higher Learning Commission. Those types of schools are what US employers are usually looking out for.
I can speak write and read english decently. Have I to know the language perfectly to apply to UoP?
You are more than qualified, judging by this comment.
Hahhahahaha 😂 😂 😂
how many years to study?
Just put in my application!
Wow awesome! What do you want to study?
@@katherinemays9856 business administration
Jacob berlin Best of luck and good fortune to you.
I want to study business administration too
Thank you katherine so much for the awsome videos you have made .
I decided to study business admunistration and i have applied for that .
Excellent.
Thank you for the information
Hi Katherine, thank you for your video. I have applied to UoPeople and hope to hear from them soon regarding the upcoming term. I am applying for the healthcare track, which I think will be really a good field for me. I very much enjoyed hearing the things you DIDN'T like about the school, and that you kept it real as far a plagiarism and cheating goes. That will be good to look out for, and I will be sure to use a plagiarism program to catch those student as well. I think that by doing that you are showing initiative in your educational environment and taking your education seriously. I would definitely enjoy hearing more about your experiences, so please continue to post videos with your thoughts and experiences in classes. Like, have you found any of the classes difficult and needed assistance or student services to help you with that? Also, have you used a mentor, or used your advisor much in communicating with the school? And one more, how many classes did you take at a time--I know you said you had to drop one because it was too intense and needed it's own focus. Thank you for your video! I hope your studies continue to go well, and you learn even more about yourself and your chosen field of study.
I'm excited for your journey to begin, Winnie! I have found many of the courses difficult because programming itself is difficult, but while some of the general education courses aren't difficult enough to cause tons of stress, they are difficult in their own way by causing you to evaluate your beliefs. Economics was challenging and I am continuing to study this subject on an ongoing basis. I saw you're going into healthcare, but unfortunately I haven't taken any of those courses. I don't have a mentor, but my boyfriend is also a software engineer, and he helps sometimes (sparingly, actually). I've found that if I'm struggling, spending much more time studying from week to week greatly improves my rate of success throughout the course. Finally, yes, I am in that part of my education that is starting to get quite challenging, and with my work schedule, I think from now on I am going to do one course per term instead of two, so five classes a year. This affords me more time to make mistakes and learn from them instead of stressing out and submitting assignments that aren't my best work. I hope this helps, and yes I am working on upcoming videos and I hope they'll be available soon!
How was it?
Appreciate how brave you are. You go girl! you are on your way.
this crap is not accredited! there are like 6 accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) Western Association of Schools and Colleges
Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)
As far as this made up school is concerned is not accredited by any means! case closed!!
Adam Raiss makes me wonder, there are distance degrees over here in Europe too, not from a traditonal university. And I looked at their accreditation and hmm just seems any institution can produce a degree and say it's a real degree with some accreditation. I mean I been looking at a few uopeople videos and why is it if it's a real university which is what it is right. It doesn't feel at all like a real university. (I am not a student there) I mean with the costs of a traditional uni, uopeople, is great for students on a budget who want a degree. That goes for any distance learning degree that is affordable. I haven't enrolled for a distance course with uopeople, because the course structure, peer grading and weekly stuff to do is not clear. Mature students have a job, and even though this uni is considered cheaper than any university for a degree, I do not see the point of starting a degree at uopeople then to quit very soon after. I am not liking that the degree is four years, when in uk you can get a degree in 3 years.
@@jayangli don't fall into their trap, these are just actors trying to convince a desperate people to spend time and money on a worthless piece of paper. There are only six accreditations bodies in America as I mentioned earlier, anything than that is a scum!!! your key reference are one these six elements which determines if your degree is worth anything.
@@adamraiss3649 hmm you got a point. I think when i make a lot of money i will return to study. The course just sounds more than a bit difficult. Just dont know how they able to offer bachelors and mba's. I think i will give this a miss.
Adam Raiss I’ll bet you’re fun at parties
do you always talk this much?
Can you stop calling it a "SCHOOL"? anyone with half a brain must avoid this crap like a plague. How many ITT tech "university" disasters must people go through to realize that the ONLY way to go to school is to go to a school that is REGIONALLY ACCREDITED and tested over time. The only reason people choose the easy way and go to a school that registeres anyone that breaths is the FACT that these people are lazy and do not want to do any REAL work. Good Luck with your non accredited program. Oh by the way DEAC is not really an accreditation... do your homework. I can print you a degree for $10 and save you all the hassle.
Erm.....I tried searching it on US Department of Education, CHEA, DEAC and many more organization and UoPeople seems to be accredited and can search on those platforms. I mean I know that there were some students who actually went to do Masters in some of the top universities in US and EU after finishing their bachelors at UoPeople. So perhaps they have progressed from it? Perhaps some people can't accept the fact that they paid so much money and time to go to a normal school and when they finished their education, they realized that the students who did Online Education gets the same benefits as they do.
Please research the information you are spewing, Aopeople is fully accredited in the US and abroad. Don't talk about things you have not even bothered to look into.
This is a great online university at a extremely affordable price. Perhaps you went to some scam university and piled up 100k in debt and have just discovered that your degree is probably worthless compared to UOPeoples's degree. And DEAC is genuine accreditation at the National level. Regional Accreditation does not matter anymore.
Well said!!
Whabo, I have been studying there for a while and I can tell you that this is most definitely not the 'easy' way. I attended a regular university before and it was a fraction of the work we do here. It's actually frustrating because you HAVE to study every single day or you won't pass. Too much work in fact. You can't take days off and still pass like at other universities.
