it's so sad/scary, you can see her facial reaction at the end when she says and now you're ready for the day, you can see the regret in her eyes
I know, it's just so sad, like It'd just make me feel sorry for her whenever I saw this commercial on TV
Sadly, she died a few years ago at the age of 53.
Lui Trap yeah her lip quivers and it looks like she's about to cry 😥
Snapper Not me.
ik.. u could even see her mouth kinda shake like she was about to cry
Takes notes Truth, this is how you make an anti-smoking ad.

Terri and I graduated from Forbush High School, Class of 1978. While Terri was beautiful, energetic and a kind person in high school, I will always remember her for her courage in her battle against cancer and for the numerous lives she touched and those saved through her ad campaigns via the CDC. Terri lost her long battle with cancer on Monday, September 16, 2013. Her family and friends will miss her loving spirit. Thank you for all you did to eradicate smoking. It was not in vain. RIP Terri.
Wow, if this doesn't wake smokers up then i don't know what will.
+Santricia Jones This doesn't wake smokers up because there's like 10 zillion smokers and 3 people with this disease. It's like saying you shouldn't play on train tracks because you might get hit by lightning.
dandymcgee Well regardless if i was a smoker i would consider quitting after watching this. I don't do anything that could be a huge danger to my health. Smoking isn't at all healthy. My great grandpa was a smoker and died from emphysema.
Santricia Jones As a non-smoker I agree, but both of my parents smoke and this sort of advertising does nothing to help them. In fact, it has a negative effect because it hardens their defenses against the media. My grandfather passed from lung cancer after smoking most of his life. I'm sorry for your loss.
dandymcgee Thank you. My apologies for your loss as well.
+Santricia Jones The problem is that smokers don't usually believe these 'ads'. They will do everything to defend themselves and will always find an excuse. Nicotine addiction can be a dagerous thing.. I'd rather be dead than live the life of this woman.
I'm 4 days into quitting smoking and finding it REALLY difficult so I'm binge watching videos like this to help me.
And yet people today STILL continue to smoke!! How can anyone continue after seeing this?!?! Rest In Peace Terrie :'(
Probably because people like this are rarely seen in public.
TheDGSexperience can't imagine why right?
Jacob Carter I think this story is actually pretty rare. My mother is 80 and in perfect health and has smoked up to 20 cigs a day for 65 years...and she hasn't quit! Mind you her sister gave up 20 years ago and has emphysema.
The world is a very sick and cruel place.
I just saw one on tv where a woman gets needles in her eyes as a treatment for something caused by smoking
I am from India. I was smoking for many many years but somehow managed to quit. Really feeling healthy & happy. Also I can walk faster, breath easier, sleep better etc.
Congrats on your quit on smoking!
Many thanks
for your body to recover from smoking it takes 20 years
Good for u man way to be able to put down the pack
***** THATS GREAT!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND HELP OTHERS QUIT TOO!!! I have read a lot about India and smoking at a young age is something that is ramped there....Its sad to see kids who are 10 or 12 smoking....I hope that one day people will realize that smoking isn't worth all the crap it causes and just stop.
Not gonna lie, this one scares me.
ikr
I feel like it's mostly her voice.
xxiAcid ur joking right
every time
Me too
They should stop selling cigarettes
Like the tabacco stop making them then they can stop selling them
If you want cancer then go ahead ...
we all die so if a person wants smoke let her smoke because the destination is the same as non smoker
I know
Um, no.
My mum smokes and I told her about this video and as I was saying about it I didn't realise that I burst into tears. This woman broke my heart and I pray for her. If my mum ever went away I wouldn't be able to cope with anything and I would always be depressed. She said she is trying to stop and I really hope she does...
I swear ads like this really kept me from smoking
RIP Terrie. You saved thousands of lives by sharing your story. I am sure your family grieves terribly for you but they are proud of how you educated so many people about how terrible smoking is.
It's sad but also creepy every time this comes on I turn my tv off
Creepy? What's creepy about it, people die like this every day! No one wants to see that, no one wants to fell that, buts it's not creepy, it's sad! God bless Terrie
RIP Terrie
Yeah when I was little things like this made me cry it is so creepy
Yeah I change the channel
Archer Läughlin when I was younger i was brave to watch this and ok I’ll say it I only laughed at this ad and so did my sister because of her voice and it is sad that’s what she did to ruin herself like that 3 years later I’m like why did I laugh at this ad it’s very sad that she’s like this but I know that I was immature and can’t blame myself for it
Have you ever noticed how all the smokers turn away when this PSA comes on? Denial, is mind boggling
Smoking is disgusting!
+Mala Suerte Yes!....I cringe every time, yet it's the motivation I need at the moment, to let smoking go all together....
@Brando Rosales good for you, adelante caminante! 😉👍🏽
Good luck on quitting smoking, Brando!
I hate this comment, they're not denying it, they're just aware or their addiction and cant help it.
Holy smokes
TheLollypop587 you win
Leave.
lol
+Ah Dollar Leave.
Ba-dum tissss
We are so glad to hear that you have quit smoking and reached your 1 week smoke-free milestone! You should be very proud of yourself. Within 20 minutes of the last cigarette you smoked, your body already begain to heal itself, and this will continue for the long term. Keep up the good work and you will be smoke-free for good!
Terri Hall (the woman in this video) died yesterday (Monday Sept. 16, 2013). This video helped me educate my children on the dangers of smoking. Terri was only 53 years old. Thank you CDC for introducing her to us, RIP Terri.
I started smoking when I was 18 and after 10 years I was finally able to quit smoking
That's awesome how did you?
+SoRRiii ....hoodini
+Taylor Nicole Dean nice. i started when i was around 14 and i quit when i was 19.
Good a beautiful girl like you doesn't need to be smoking. Live life to the fullest.
Good on you and don't look back!!! tDon't worry, we all make mistakes in our life!
Thank you for the positive feedback regarding the Tips From Formers Smokers campaign. We are grateful to have such courageous participants, including Terrie, who are willing to share their stories to help encourage others to quit smoking and prevent youth from ever starting.
After 25 yrs of smoking....I quit the very DAY I saw this commercial. I had seen every stop smoking ad, I'd participated in 2 focus groups regarding those ads. This woman....this commercial....stopped me in my tracks. It's been 3.5 yrs, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
THEY'RE SELLING CHOCOLATE??
lol
WHAT?! WHAT ARE THE SELLING?!
+micahw64 Chocolate... I remember when they first invented chocolate. Sweet, sweet chocolate. I always HATED IT!
But in all seriousness, this commercial is sad and effective.
LOL
I feel bad for laughing
See, *these* are the commercials that make teens stop smoking, not those dumb "it's a trap" commercials with a bunch of pop music and flashy colors.
-a teen that used to smoke
Poor Terry. She just breaks my heart. I wish there was something I could do to help her.
This woman is an inspiration. She may have lost her battle with cancer but not before baring her soul & going naked before the world. I saw this ad only a few times before I saw the light & quit smoking. It has been almost 3 year since I quit & I have this woman to thank for that. I hope she has touched many more people with her message about smoking.
Thank you for your nice words. I have yet another year under my belt thanks to her. These commercials are so hard to watch. They are scary & heartbreaking. Every time I see one of her messages I still get emotional. I have so many people in my family who smoke. I wish they would quit. I can only try to be a positive example for them I suppose.
Why do governments allow the selling of cigarettes yet, the law says its prohibited? Give me an answer!
its only prohibited in public places like restaurants.
the reason why there are still tobacco products is because of trade and business. if the america stops the trade and makes tobacco products illegal, that is a LOT of money lost.
How about in the Philippines? Our government doesn't allow it anywhere yet they don't arrest them.
Kobe Estacio well this was filmed in america, and i live in france, soooo... yeah like i know.
but still, there is tobacco trade all over the world.
why don't you stop using the comment section as a search engine and research it yourself?
toujoursParfaite because they don't display concrete answers. I could use opinions too but their answers are too shallow...
Kobe Estacio well you just don't know how to look information up. just look up the laws of your country, they go in depth.
After a person with a laryngectomy and stoma has recovered from surgery, speaking should not be painful.
i'm 22, i've been smoking for 6 years, and it has already begun to destroy my heart and my lungs- much faster than i thought possible. i saw this commercial and the other CDC commercials and started to cry. i quit right then and there. it really can happen to anyone.
This is why I don't even think about smoking.
Omg i can see a beautiful woman in her face
And also the young picture of her at the beginning.
yeah but now she's beautiful, i dont know if that is for her eyes or something, She looks like a beautiful woman behind that skin
Garlicfarm she is young smoking can cause you to look very old at a young age at about 23
Yupp
Rest In Peace Terrie. Smoking eventually took the life of my mom and I miss her and my dad everyday.
Just saw this commercial.
I applaud her for being a cancer survivor, for overcoming her addiction to smoking, and for especially for making this commercial.
It broke my heart to see it.
Her eyes are beautiful and so is she.
Truly someone to look up to-3.
sounds like she saying "I'm Mary " instead of Terrie.
Smoke-free for 94 days and counting, that’s great news! Keep it up, we know you can continue to be smoke-free for good and improve your health. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
Truth is probably watch this thinking "naw lets use outdated memes to get kids to stop smoking instead"
What a brave woman. I'm so happy she did this commercial for everyone who has smoked or ever thinks of smoking.
Wow, this is the most powerful and heartbreaking anti-smoking message I have ever seen. I almost started bawling at the end. My heart goes out to smokers. I do not know one who wouldn't quit if they could. That poor woman, but she is doing a great thing now.
Truth doesn't tell the Truth as much as this tbh
protecc your lungs
The people featured in the Tips From Formers Smokers campaign showed incredible courage and commitment by telling their stories, and all shared a common goal of inspiring and motivating others to take steps to quit smoking. We support them and are inspired by their example. When asked why they took part, each said that they didn’t want anyone to have to go through what they have gone through. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and watching these ads will motivate people to quit.
Terrie, you are an inspiration to all. Thank you for your bravery and drive to help others who are or who have been in similar shoes. God Bless.
Of course they're disturbing. I'm on the verge of tears. Seeing someone suffer like she still is wasn't exactly what i came looking for on youtube. She's beyond defeated, and it shows in her expression. I commend her perseverance and know that you're helping others, but now i'm really depressed.
It is sad to see what cancer did to Terrie. She was such a beautiful woman
She's amazing for showing you what could happen to you. Not many people are willing to put themselves out there in order to help prevent other people from getting to that point. Thank you Terrie.
*Lights up a cigarette*
This one's for ya
Terrie!!
Rest in peace. My mother died from metastatic cancer which spread from her breast to her lung and never smoked a day in her life. If you can prevent cancer from not smoking - then please stop. Thank you, Ms. Hall for giving or yourself and opening your life to show what you smoking did to you. I hope it helped saved thousands of lives. Sleep well, and know you are in pain no more and you can now sing with the angels.
I believe this was the most successful anti-smoking ad I've ever seen.
this commercial gets me every time.
Thank you for putting this one on RUclips. This woman touches me every time i see her ads. She is courageous, and her sense of humor comes through. i really would love to meet her. Thank you for telling your story, Terri. You must have been one awesome cool young rebel, and now you inspire on a whole higher level. Peace and Love to you, sister
What happens to her throat? I'm not trying to be rude at all, I'm just curious 😟
+Angi 123 After years of smoking, Terrie was diagnosed with throat cancer. When Terrie had surgery for her cancer, her voice box was removed. Some people who have this surgery have an artificial voice box (or voice prosthesis) in order to speak. They can push air from their lungs through the implant device so they can create sound for speech. The hole in Terrie’s neck (also called a stoma) had to be covered so that the air went through her voice box and not out of her stoma. The hands-free device closed the stoma so Terrie could speak without having to use her hands to cover her stoma.
+Mod And Bad had*, Terri died.
+Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) oh.i thought it was just there because she was smoking.not to be rude
she smoked and got cancer
+Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) terrie was a heroe
Thank you so much CDC for having started this campaign! It's the first thing that REALLY helps me quitting. As soon as I feel the urge to smoke, I just watch Terrie and all the others and the cravings are immediately gone. Thank you all for taking part in these videos and for being so honest.
This is way better than pictures of black lungs etc.! I won't ever see mine anyways! But watching these people suffer really woke me up. They are so brave for exposing themselves and sharing their story to shock current smokers!
RIP Terrie
My grandmother has COPD from smoking
Terrie Hall, the woman in this commercial, just passed away from cancer. She was 53 years old.
Many of my friends are in their 20s, and they smoke. They say it helps them feel energized, keeps them skinny, gives them something to do. When I watch the suffering Terrie went through, it hurts to know this may be the future for the people I love. Thank you Terrie, for being brave enough to show the tragic reality of smoking.
You have to admire her bravery in doing these videos to illustrate the dangers. Great courage in exposing her daily battle in the face of cancer. As a former smoker it is all the more compelling to what I may have faced if I had not stopped.
A true hero. RIP Terrie. Hopefully she saved many lives.
Cigarettes should be illegal! And this is coming from someone who smoked on & off for 7 years but just officially quit on New Years Day, and so far so good.
Awww Terrie!! All my love and prayers go out to you. ♡♥ shes 51 I feel so bad xoxo
This is why I'll never touch a cigarette in my life, and always hold my breath when i approach someone smoking one.
Hats off for Terrie. This took a lot of courage and her efforts will definitely make a change in today's life.
Thank you for sharing your encouraging story with us. We are glad to hear that Terrie’s ad motivated you to quit. Within 20 minutes of smoking that last cigarette your body began a series of healing changes that last for years. If you would like assistance to stay quit, please know that free resources are available by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW or accessing Smokefree.gov. We know you can be tobacco-free for good and improve your health in the short and long term!
After seeing this over and over when I pressed play I jumped lol
She sounds like roz from monsters inc.
She sounds like a motor cycle engine revving up
RIP Terrie, you bravery to share your story helped inspire many smokers to finally quit. Good job.
did she use to voice big smoke? ?
big *smoke*
LOLOL
She’s dead now that’s mean
😆😆😆😆😆
Terri was so brave. She made herself vulnerable publicly, to help people she would never meet. Thanks Terri.
she was probably vunerably publicly already but kk
+Chocolate chip cookies Chocolate chip cookies vunerably publicly?
terri i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart all of you that have done these commercials,i am a 54 year old woman who has smoked since i was 13 years old.i smoked a lot and often for 41 years then i saw the commercials and sat down and started crying even my brother dying in 2011 from lung cancer did not scare me for some reason and i was his caregiver to the end..i hope you can feel good knowing you stopped me from smoking 7 months clean thank you to all of you for my life.bless you
One of my heroes. As someone with a lot of smokers in my family, I have to say I will never even touch tobacco in my life. 😭
If that doesn't put people off from smoking, I don't know what will.
I'm older than Terrie and it shocks me to see how much older she looks. She has a tremendous amount of courage to go on TV and let everyone see how smoking has ravaged her body, hoping to help others. It has been over 40 years since cigarette ads were taken off of TV and the surgeon general's warning has been on cigarette packages, but I think young people just think they will quit before it hurts them, or just look at those people who manage to live a long life, in spite of their smoking.
AND NOW IM READY FOR THA DAY
rowan drake I'm going to hell for laughing at this.
OH NO U ARE SO MEAN BUT I LAUGHED SO HARD
👩🚬👵🚬💀, an emoji reminder of the dangers if smoking.
"they're selling chocolates?"
spongebob ;))
I hate myself for laughing I’m sorry
All for likes huh?
Taken
Oml I feel so bad that I laughed 😂
i feel so bad for her 😭😭
Sadly she passed away a couple years ago 😪
DON'T
Don't. It was her fault
Jxess s hey you want some
It's the way she takes that little breath at the end of the clip and the sad look in her eyes....It just breaks my heart that this poor little woman is going through this, yet exposing herself to criticism by showing all of her private flaws to help other people. God bless her and save her....
She used to be so pretty. Gosh, people. Why do you do it to your *perfectly healthy body*?
I obviously know that. What I meant by this comment is people know that smoking is not good for your body. I definitely do not mean to offend anybody, but people keep watching these commercials, not caring about what could happen to them.
Keke Grant-Floyd It's called addiction.
Keke Grant-Floyd ikr
Mehar Mannava they were not strong enough and stupid
We should show this video to every smokers
The surgery performed to treat the cancer required removal of the voice box. The hole in the neck is called a stoma and allows for a device to be inserted to help them talk. It also helps to protect the airway so that secretions from the mouth and food don’t go into the lungs.
Rip Terrie 💔❤️
This is too scary 😨 please to everyone out there stop smoking 😟
This commercial blows all the cringe Truth "Left Swipe" ads out of proportion
Way to go, David! We are very encouraged that you have decided to quit smoking and using tobacco and have taken all the right steps to help you succeed. We know it’s not easy, but you can do it and begin to enjoy the benefits of a healthier, happier lifestyle.
One of the funniest commercials to exist to this day! XD
So tragic. She was so beautiful now she not only lost it but even more importantly her life. All because of legal drugs
She died a couple years after this was filmed
Our teacher showed us this at school. Now I'm showing this to anyone I see smoking.
Cicelia The Introverted that’s annoying
same
Makes me wanna cry.
Still such a beautiful woman, rest in peace angel.
CHRIS12345and7 she is a lovely women, probably in heaven smoking 50 cigarettes having a great time.
This is probably the most hard-hitting series of ads I've seen, keep up the good work guys!
i dont know how to stop my dad from smoking, please help ;(
This is so unbelievably sad!!
But the thing I hate the most is that this is a meme
One of the most effective recent anti smoking PSAs.

R.I.P. May you be in a better place and never feel pain again....Terrie Hall died of cancer Monday at a hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT REMINDS ME OF GRANDMA WHEN I WAS A KID!!!!!!!!! Everytime I see this, my grandmother is what comes first to mind. She's been smoking for 53 years and died at 68 in December 2011. RIP (1943-2011). She came to the states in the early 90s with my dad from Cuba. I turned 13 when it happened. I'm starting to tear up because it breaks my heart whenever I see people smoking and might end up with the same fate as her. My dad was the one who took it harder than I did because started to visit me and my twin when we were three. My dad's an orphan now. At least he's got us now.
i always wondered who did the voice of Donald duck
Leave.
Idiot
yeah i know it's common sense I should've known duh
This aint funny, dude. Really. You can make fun of a lot of things. But not this, man.
Making fun of a dead woman?
Stop making cigarette and they will be forced to stop smoke... That is one of solutions...
This video make me stop smoking. Thanks =)
R.I.P
She used to be gorgeous
I want to give her a hug. 😢
I honestly feel so so bad for her. I just want to hug her and like OMG. that is terrible I know it was their choice but I mean like what she goes through she seems like a very nice woman. :(
She passed away
Imagine her ordering food at a drive thru
DeadSparko And now I'm ready for my order.
Jesse Pinkman ha
DeadSparko 😅
Yaa I can imagine
😆😆😆😆😆
