    Terri and I graduated from Forbush High School, Class of 1978. While Terri was beautiful, energetic and a kind person in high school, I will always remember her for her courage in her battle against cancer and for the numerous lives she touched and those saved through her ad campaigns via the CDC. Terri lost her long battle with cancer on Monday, September 16, 2013. Her family and friends will miss her loving spirit. Thank you for all you did to eradicate smoking. It was not in vain. RIP Terri.

      +Santricia Jones This doesn't wake smokers up because there's like 10 zillion smokers and 3 people with this disease. It's like saying you shouldn't play on train tracks because you might get hit by lightning.

    • @santriciajones2579
      @santriciajones2579 9 лет назад +165

      dandymcgee Well regardless if i was a smoker i would consider quitting after watching this. I don't do anything that could be a huge danger to my health. Smoking isn't at all healthy. My great grandpa was a smoker and died from emphysema.

    • @dandymcgee
      @dandymcgee 9 лет назад +46

      Santricia Jones As a non-smoker I agree, but both of my parents smoke and this sort of advertising does nothing to help them. In fact, it has a negative effect because it hardens their defenses against the media. My grandfather passed from lung cancer after smoking most of his life. I'm sorry for your loss.

    • @santriciajones2579

      +Santricia Jones The problem is that smokers don't usually believe these 'ads'. They will do everything to defend themselves and will always find an excuse. Nicotine addiction can be a dagerous thing.. I'd rather be dead than live the life of this woman.

      its only prohibited in public places like restaurants.
      the reason why there are still tobacco products is because of trade and business. if the america stops the trade and makes tobacco products illegal, that is a LOT of money lost.

    • @CDC
      @CDC  9 лет назад +209

      +Angi 123 After years of smoking, Terrie was diagnosed with throat cancer. When Terrie had surgery for her cancer, her voice box was removed. Some people who have this surgery have an artificial voice box (or voice prosthesis) in order to speak. They can push air from their lungs through the implant device so they can create sound for speech. The hole in Terrie’s neck (also called a stoma) had to be covered so that the air went through her voice box and not out of her stoma. The hands-free device closed the stoma so Terrie could speak without having to use her hands to cover her stoma.

    I'm older than Terrie and it shocks me to see how much older she looks. She has a tremendous amount of courage to go on TV and let everyone see how smoking has ravaged her body, hoping to help others. It has been over 40 years since cigarette ads were taken off of TV and the surgeon general's warning has been on cigarette packages, but I think young people just think they will quit before it hurts them, or just look at those people who manage to live a long life, in spite of their smoking.

    It's the way she takes that little breath at the end of the clip and the sad look in her eyes....It just breaks my heart that this poor little woman is going through this, yet exposing herself to criticism by showing all of her private flaws to help other people. God bless her and save her....

    • @RockinMcQueen
      @RockinMcQueen 7 лет назад +10

      I obviously know that. What I meant by this comment is people know that smoking is not good for your body. I definitely do not mean to offend anybody, but people keep watching these commercials, not caring about what could happen to them.

    The surgery performed to treat the cancer required removal of the voice box. The hole in the neck is called a stoma and allows for a device to be inserted to help them talk. It also helps to protect the airway so that secretions from the mouth and food don’t go into the lungs.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT REMINDS ME OF GRANDMA WHEN I WAS A KID!!!!!!!!! Everytime I see this, my grandmother is what comes first to mind. She's been smoking for 53 years and died at 68 in December 2011. RIP (1943-2011). She came to the states in the early 90s with my dad from Cuba. I turned 13 when it happened. I'm starting to tear up because it breaks my heart whenever I see people smoking and might end up with the same fate as her. My dad was the one who took it harder than I did because started to visit me and my twin when we were three. My dad's an orphan now. At least he's got us now.
