CDC: Tips From Former Smokers - Sharon A.’s Diagnosed at 37 Story

- Sharon started smoking at age 13. In her late 30s, she was diagnosed with throat cancer. She was a busy mom with two children. She made their lunches, took them to school, and was active in parent-teacher groups. In this video, Sharon talks about finding a lump in her neck and being told it was cancer. Doctors treated the tumor with chemotherapy and radiation, and tried to save her voice box. But when her symptoms returned a year later, her doctor said removing her voice box was the next step.

This stuff used to terrify me when I was younger only because the voices
Yea, it's scary. Smoking will lead to this. Many think it won't happen to them and they continue to smoke, but I know she thought the same.
Yeah me too
Yobro Poyo same
Yobro Poyo it still scares me a little bit but ik its ok
Sameeeeeee😩
This is so sad.
Smoking kills millions of U.S. youth and adults each year. I definitely encourage you to advocate in your city to help reduce rates. The community's voice really matters.
TheSampLamp yes, it does. Teenagers are youth.
Exoskeletxnz yeah
Children would ask her “why do you sound like a robot?”
Exoskeletxnz Indeed, it is. It could happen to any family that starts smoking young. To me that's actually quite foolish for you could easily end up like Sharon. It's time for us that have children not to start smoking. If you or your loved one starts smoking, this story needs to get out to them before it's too late.
They don't care about us there just in there world they say smoking is cool and you really think your gonna be tough probly get jumped.
That voice is actually really terrifying.
Don’t smoke if u do and u don’t quit that will happen to u.
Ikr
I get nightmares
omg ye
Its.your.girl.yeidi agree
My aunt lost her voice box because of smoking, she has two young kids and they’re scared of her now because they don’t like her voice
Gamin that's sad to hear ) :
That is sad
Sad 😞
Can't she learn ASL, like basic things, so she doesn't have to use it?
I mean, for things like; 'I love you' and 'goodbye' I think hugs or comforting gestures are better.
Make them think star wars n they'd love it
That's scary. Happened to my Grandmother when she was 60. She died at 62.
Sorry bout that. R.I.P
That is very sad, I am sorry to hear. Smoking is killing more and more people because tobacco companies are making their product more addictive and marketing "trendy" new products like electronic cigarettes (e-cigs, vape, juuls). They are not safer and will eventually lead to disease and/or death. I encourage you to share you story advocate with a local tobacco control coalition in your city
I'm sorry to hear that. :(
Man R.I.P to her
Rest in peace
My Mom used to smoke years ago. I think she started smoking when she was just a teenager, but really started smoking after she had me at 20. She quit around 4 years later around age 24, and she is now age 34, and hasn't had any problems since she stopped. I am very grateful to still have her, and I hope that she continues to have a healthy smoke free life.
Yay 😎. Unfortunately for a family member on my family 🚬🥴
wait so your 10?
Good on your mom for quitting smoking at a young age.
@@mistylover7398 What the heck
I smoke 20 years. I am ok.
I wish they never invented cigarettes in the first place people would have been healthy and alive I lost my Grandma 10 years ago because of that poisonous cigarettes that can cause bad health.....
Pinkie Neko no, its ur grandmothers mistake
Everyone can quit from an addiction
Even herion or game addiction
Smoking is nothing compared to heroin or coke
Craig is that meant to be a joke?!!
Pinkie Neko srry but Craig is right ur grandmother chose to smoke🤷
The ones who invented cigarettes are really stupid!!!!
chihuahua CHIHUAHUA daFOOL they could've said it more nicer
My mom died form oral cancer even though she was a non smoker, non drinker, and healthy eater. Oral cancer and throat cancer can really fuck up someone's life. The saddest thing for me is that she lived her last few months in excruciating pain
Second smoke can cause it
Stay strong.
"I wish I had recorded my voice before all...this, Because now all my grandkids hear is this." -Terrie
This quote I feel relates to this and made me really sad, so utterly terrifying and sad.
My parents are both smokers. I don't want this to happen to them :(
Never get tired of reminding them of the bad impacts of smoking on them.
Alif Wibisono I smoke cigarettes 🚬 1 pack a day
Cause it's not good to smoke
just tell them how you feel about their smoking and that you worry about them and that you want them to be around to witness major milestones like high school graduation, heading to college, getting married, having children and so on and so forth
Show them these videos
For me she sound like robot from star wars. But of course there is no laugh, its have to be very tough for her i bet... we are so fragile, and so many deases showing its for us, but still we are do nothing with it...
Magdalena Baganz yeah it's so sad but she does sound like a robot
Magdalena Baganz....with pollution...it could happen to you also...there are many people just like this who never touched a cigarrete in their lives.
The “dark side” IRL
THANK YOU so much for doing this, Sharon! I don’t find it “terrifying!” I think it’s a blessing that you can still talk to your babies! Thank the Universe YOU are STILL here! Much love to you and your children!!! ❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️
@Julie Lourdes Not sure, could be dead 💀
My mom died when I was young and I can't remember her real voice, but I remember this.
People are so extremely addicted to cigarettes that even this video won't stop them from smoking. I had a co-worker that was so addicted to smoking that he tore up the workplace ,and then went home and went through his whole house ,and went and tore his car apart looking for a cigarette. I tried smoking twice, when I was younger ,and it tasted like ash ,and burnt my throat and I just didn't like it. I am so glad that I did not become addicted to cigarettes, since I do have a addictive personality.
For me personally cigarettes gave me really bad headaches so I at least have a good reason not to let myself get addicted
I never smoked 😎 virginity is cool
@@MangalFaisal I'm proud of u.

Georgia Patrick, I think it could have been more honest, she was diagnosed at age 37 she's 57 or 58 now, that's a great testament to the advancements in Cancer!!! That's 20 years.
@@gypsythehoneybee3261 - Of course there are great advances in treatment that can prolong life. But is this something you’d want to go through just for a smoke??
I can’t imagine a doctor looking me in the eyes and telling me he has to remove my voice box.... It sounds horrible.
👨⚕️ : alright now let's see if we can have that voice box of yours so you can be as voiceless and silent as bumblebee. Which 📻 voice you want?

These commercials have always freaked me out a little, especially the one involving the use of an electro larynx. I understand these people cannot help it, and they have my upmost respect/ sympathy, but the voice an EL produces sends chills down your spine. It really makes your heart hurt even worse knowing this happens to people. I wish the absolute best to all participants of the CDC tips campaign. Brave, brave people ❤
My grandmother died at 63 in 2004 due to smoking. My mother was the only one in the family that didn’t take up smoking. Unfortunately only her father and one of her brothers have quit. 2 other brothers and a sister still smoke.
Thank you for sharing your story, Sharon. I can only imagine how difficult it is to be vulnerable like this to the world, but your story is helpful for others. I wish you a long life!
the voice is actually pretty cool. it's like those 90's rap song tech voices
LOL
I do agree, but wouldn’t want to be stuck with it FOREVER.
That voice is pretty cool -- for "Doctor Doom," not for a real person.

Just stopped smoking yesterday, the day of my 34th birthday. I've always been a very light smoker since I started at age 22 (1.5 packs a month) and I have no health problems but I know what it will do to me if I keep smoking for the next decades. I just hope it's not too late for me and I can have a good life expectancy.
God I’m never smoking again, I’ve smoked like 17 in my life and nopeeeee
Bruhh i`m 17 too and i felt like i grew acnes bcs i smoke and my skin has wrinkles bcs of it
Wow that's sad.. I love her. And I'm so happy she actually wants to talk about it...
I’m so confused about cigarette smoking. There is absolutely no benefit, it’s proven to only be bad for you, and you become a slave to your addiction. I do feel sympathetic for these people though. It’s so great that they are helping to spread the word. I’m also so grateful that nobody in my family smokes.
Riley Bowman That's amazing and indeed, it's something to be thankful for.
You are naive and shortsighted, there are few very powerful benefits to smoking, it's you're just too lazy and find it easier to dismiss any.
It's like everythink though including alcohol and eating unhealthy foods
My dad.... basicly all that i have a strong Bond with in my family smokes...
It hurts. I have tried to make Them stop.
My dad smoked until i was 3. He started again when i was 11 (i’m 12)
When i Saw him smoking for the first time in so many years, i fainted.
I’m so afraid that this will happen to my dad, aswell as my grandma, my dads sister, my brothers...
And when i tell Them to stop...
They say
“Its not your problem”
That´s the thing.
It IS my problem, cause, i love you.

@@corex9023 vapes is dangerous to still can get cancer from vapes to. Best not get vapes it's can cause cancer.
The risks of vaping
Researchers do know that e-cigarette vapor contains toxic chemicals like those found in glue and paint. What’s less clear is if the amounts are high enough to cause diseases like cancer.
“The biggest problem is that we don’t know exactly what goes into all the flavorings, and there are thousands of them,” . Experts say it could take 20 years to know the long-term health effects of vaporizing.
But there are some clear dangers to e-cigarettes, particularly when it comes to nicotine.
Don't buy vapes can cause cancers and others high risk to best to talk to them about it. Buy quitting smoking guns for them
That is millions of times more difficult than fighting my cravings for the rest of my life.... And the cravings will not even be forever..
Just wait until the cravings turn into actually DREAMING that you are smoking ... the mind will try anything to trick you.
@@LucyJazzy85 no it didn’t turn into dreams, it’s been 4 years since I quit smoking and I smoked heavily for just 1.5 years… the cravings are nothing, it’s a joke. Cravings reduce in intensity and frequency very rapidly… and Yes I had some cravings even after 2 years or so… those were just psychological cravings… while many people feel hopeless because of cravings that happen years after quitting, I celebrated the fact that These cravings came once after so long and stayed for just a minute or so, a small price to pay for less risk of cancer…. A craving or two in a year is a joke… I could take on such cravings once a day…
sending many trouts and good vibes her way. it’s so sad how many are effected by this and how little action is taken from the top
I had an uncle who was on my mom’s side of the family and was extremely addicted to smoking and did it endlessly. He died from having severe lung damage.
This is worse this is why you don’t smoke 🚭 it’s painful 😣 I’m 11 should I make a program

Sorry to hear that.. I hope she at least quit smoking. That makes a huge difference
Is she still alive?

So proud of you smoking is really bad and can hart you
When she said “🤖” I felt that
Iced_Kryptic 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s really rude but very true and sad😭..😔
Seeing this is what it took me to quit smoking 2 years ago.
i never smoked at all in my life and I though I was gonna end up like a smoker (the robot voice box or oxgyen can) due to me breathing in the smoke from the seniors were doing outside of school and some other people but lucky for me I never had that happen!
When she said "next step is we gotta remove the voice box!" if my doctor said that i be in tears crying because i would not be able to live with myself because people would think I smoked when i never did
that's why I never started to smoke.
This device is actually exsist in a far more advanced version actually. The sensor detect the "voice" but instead of giving these creepy robotic sound its converted to a much nicer voice like the tts voice sounds. Its have a computer inside and Its have a battery, needs to recharge more often and its more expensive but the person can talk almost like a normal person with it.
maybe someday we could invent something like that to help those who have lost their voice due to cancer
I switched from smoking cigarettes to vaping, I've been vaping for 5 years now. I thought vaping is safer than cig but I was diagnosed with fatty liver last month due to vaping, also it elevates triglycerides.
It's sad to see smoke people kill themselves without knowing it or without a care in the world.
I quit smoking 6 months ago and happy I quit this video and others helped me quit
Those electrolarynxes....oh my God. I’d rather just learn sign language and be mute for the rest of my life than have to use those to speak.
I hope that she will be happy in this and her next lives...
I'm so sorry for anyone who had anything bad happen to them.
im scared that my brother is going to end up like this or even worse. every time i see him smoke i start to worry about whats going to happen in the next few years I dont want my brother to die.
It’s creepy but I feel bad for her 😢
I don’t, it was her choice to smoke, she knew smoking was bad, what did she expect, to get a million dollar for smoking, no everyone when they think of smoking they think of lung problems and cancer, and bad people , because bad people smoke, if they wanted to be a better person they would not smoke
I lost my grandpa to lung cancer because he kept smoking. I really wish he were alive today so i couldve shared more memories with him.
I sent this to my dad , I hope he changes his mind after seeing this :)
So sad. She is such a beautiful lady but her voice is gone. Sad
I am not a smoker and never have been but these videos are so deep
My mom was a heavy smoker she wasn't to see a patient she died of COPD and CHF the doctor told her she needed to quit she said she couldn't and when she tried she went into a seizure so she smoked her she passed and she was happy to smoke said that's all she had left so God took her some people can't quit I'm a witness to that a beautiful gorgeous mom had 3% of her heart left when she passed
Wouldnt a cure be beautiful. Your mom would be alive!! All it takes is a cure. They save the opioid addicts, don't they? It's a shame. God bless you and your mom.
How badly did I want her to say "Roger Roger"

This is depressing, I don’t know why cigarettes are not banned worldwide because Cigarettes causes lung cancer and it’s not safe to smoke, it’ll ruin a human’s life. 😔😢😔
My grandma smokes and quit for my older sisters tenth birthday and she got sad it’s been seven years since
I wish they would discover a new device that doesn't sound robotic and so creepy
How about a cure??? Dah.
They do but you have to get a recording of your own voice first. They can't once the voice box is removed.
Harder, better, faster, strongaaa.
Im watching these in hopes to eventually stop smoking but still cant. It sucks cuz i have my whole life ahead of me and i shouldn’t even be smoking. Theese videos help me a little bit so i think their very useful.
I lost my gran gran last year because of cigarettes now I’m gonna lose my mom and dad to them too💔💔💔
I just finished smoking and this popped out of my reccomendation

My grandma used to smoke when I was younger. She stopped thankfully and is still kicking it at 69.
She's so beautiful.
This is so scary and i just feel so bad for the people who i see smoking outside at my school during breaks. I would say that about 20-30% of the students at my school are smokers. I just feel so bad for them.
Dont feel bad for them they are releasing toxic fumes for others to breathe jn
My mom has been smoking for what i assume is a decade. Nothing has really happened to her yet, but I'm worried for her still.

Remember the Marlboro man??
the commercial on tv went something like this:
"COME TO WHERE THE FLAVOR IS
COME TO MARLBORO COUNTRY"
what the commercials don't tell you and don't show you is the deadly end result of smoking their wonderful, great tasting, flavorful cigarettes.
My father is a plumber in Europe and he had a customer speaking with this device but in the begining, my father did not know about this device and this illness. And he starts working under the kitchen sink and the customer starts to speak with my papa. My father got so scared that he believed that devil himself was speaking. It was so funny for me !
God bless her 🙏😇
My uncle herbie went through this and used this device he didn't live much longer after that all through smoking same with my grandfather never saw him without a cigarette in his mouth and he used to wreak!!!! Rip to both glad I never took it up!!!!
My grandmother smokes, and I'm worried about her health but she says that she's an elder person so she has the right to decide if she wants to smoke even if it kills her.
Its bad for her health, but its also bad for my life because she spends 40 dollars on cigarettes and that's money that could go to our rent or buying food when we barely have enough to eat.
I am so sorry. I have been there. My stepmother and my dad both smoked and they would go through a carton a week between them, sometimes too. I don’t even want to know how much money they poured into cigarettes. My dad later died at 50 from complications from COPD. You are not alone. I just wanted you to know that.
Lydia Fabela,
