  • Michael suffers from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), which makes it harder for a person to breathe and can cause death. In this video from CDC's "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign, Michael talks about how he wishes he had never started smoking, and the damage it caused to his lungs. He describes waking up one morning unable to breathe and having to go to the hospital. He also talks about the pain his condition has brought to his family.

You can stop. Throw away your cigarettes, don't buy any more, pick a gum flavor, chew it, eat chocolate, brush your teeth. Just stop. Stop. Stop.

+Georgia Lempesis Let me say that Ecigs are worse than smoking because the ultra fine particles are weapon grade size they pass through walls. So they pass through the walls of your lungs and through all the organs in your body and saturate every cell in your body. They will probably find that people will die in 15 to 20 years instead of 30 to 40 years

My heart goes out to you and I hope the comforter will be there to walk with you through the loss. You hear the term cancer survivor but you will never hear of a COPD survivor because it has no point of return. It is progressive and does so at different degrees depending on the persons life style. I am so happy that I have been given the opportunity to reach the masses and plead with my own tears and what breath I have left for them to turn back from this place I find my self!

I only smoked for 5 years. I started at 19 and quit one morning at the age of 24. I wish I could tell you all how I did it, but I myself don't know. It's so sad for people to live like this. I wish you all the best my friend!

+mee937 I am but I don't know for how long I am down to 33% left of my lungs and may have lung cancer too. It has been a hard fight and still is as I speak in as many schools as I can. You can hear a pin drop when I am speaking. I have spoken to between 5 and 10 thousand kids so far.

😔this just made me cry my eyes out! My father went through this last year. He actually worked at the CDC. He was on Life Support for 2 months for Stage 4 Lung Cancer with a tumor larger than a baseball blocking his airway. He also had COPD & a blood clot in his lungs. He just recently passed away a day after his 63rd bday after months of chemo treatments just to prolong his life a little longer. He put up a good fight. But I cry every day thinking about the pain that he was in. I miss him so much. I just wished he would've stopped. I have never touched a cigarette a day in my life & never will!

Brittany Humphrey I know how you feel. My maternal grandpa had secondhand smoke because his workers smoked around him. In 2010, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He passed away 10/15/2016 and this hits me so badly and I am still trying to let go. If you don’t want to get secondhand smoke, tell others not to smoke around you. That’s what he did but his coworkers didn’t care. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

My uncle smoked from aged 7 till his death at 68. He had COPD, Lung cancer, colon cancer, blood clots, throat cancer and he could never breathe. He suffered for years and blood came out of his throat and stool daily. My mum was devastated by his death it’s taken her 5 years to say his name without bursting into tears. For the love of your family and to save yourself suffering please DO NOT smoke. It’s not worth it.

My dad has COPD too.. and it breaks my heart to see him multiple times not to be able to breath and he is screaming for air and I can't do anything about it. He always wish that if he can just turn back time and stop smoking in the past when he was younger. And thats the main reason why I stop smoking.. I want to enjoy life to the fullest.

My mother was diagnosed with Moderate COPD when I was in college 5 years ago. I remember how helpless I felt, being on the phone with her, walking to class, and hearing her gasping for air while driving to the urgent care for a nebulizer treatment, just so she could breathe. She's on meds for life to monitor it, and I can say that while I am proud she quit smoking...it should not have taken up to that point for her to quit. The doctor said she will probably die from this. It's scary.

Thank you Michael for speaking out. You are a brave and caring man for communicating your message so openly. COPD does indeed effect every facet of ones life.
I believe that the corporate leaders of every tobacco company should spend 1 week out of every year living in the chronic respiratory ward of a hospital to see the damage they help to cause.
God bless you and stay strong.

If you smoke and want to quit..you quit.....cold turkey...and you never ever touch another cigarette again.its the only way that you will never be tempted, it truly shows what your made of....and you'll be so proud of yourself...and you will have a stronger mind...watching videos of persons with lung diseases and other smoking (maybe not) diseases never have never will stop one person from smoking....the money used for these videos should go to a cure....my opinion as well as many.

The only difference between an extreme exasperation attack and water boarding is the water, they are both suffocation. In water boarding a terrorist will break with in five minutes but I would have to endure it for four hours. It would be enough to finally make me quit for ever, but the damage was already done and now I find I am a ghost walker living on borrowed time.

John Hall I agree with Meg regarding not curing or making advancements on very old..the dark ages really diseases. Yes, I do believe more should and could be being done for Copd. Many people have this now, it's not just smokers, and John, I am a RN-MSN...so I know alittle something, she's right, I work with pulmonologist everyday they blame researchers and pharmaceutical companies for there greed so...Megs kinda on target here...people change things even in medicine...never doubt that, or we would still have many diseases. So, I would not be so judemental. Ignorant I think not. Passionate about a cause yes. Take care.

John Hall your rude....I have read her comments, as a medical professional....she's pretty spot on. Real spot on. And, if everybody remains complacent with diseases nothing is done .....that's why they cure diseases someone stands up....maybe you don't understand that....so, if you get a disease, shall we not stand up for you? They use to say...they could not cure hearts...they do now, many cancers...can be cured or put in remission....maybe you should research...stand up!!
