Sergei Lyapunov - Variations and Fugue on a Russian Theme Op. 49 (GSARCI VIDEO REVIVAL)

- The Variations stands at the beginning of Lyapunov’s final creative period, which is marked by less spectacular writing and wanton brilliance, increasingly compact harmonies and even greater technical difficulties. A folk theme in the unusual 5/4 metre is soberly stated in the D-sharp Aeolian mode. Despite their complexity, the variations that follow never give in to spectacular runs and ornaments in the Lisztian sense and are limited to the classical development of the melody, or of fragments such as the descending scale taken from the theme’s opening bar. Particularly noteworthy are the second variation with its minuscule homophonic chord jumps; the third for its uninterrupted motion of the inner voice; the imitations in the fourth variation; and a group of variations modulating poetically into the relative key of F-sharp major. The final fugue is what it should be: a demonstration of compositional craftsmanship every bit as impressive as the fugue that concludes Brahms’ Handel Variations, to which it seems to extend a fraternal salute.

Makes me cry when I'm not sad.
Makes me sad....
Эта музыка близка моему сердцу... в ней радость жизни, глубина чувств... искренность эмоций...
I like Lyapunov more and more
yet another rare treasure. Thank you sir!
You're welcome. :)
Great upload! In my opinion one of Lyapunov's very best compositions.
Glad you gave me opportunity to wake up to his music. World class!
Each time I want to like one of your videos, it seems I've already done it previously x)
Bravo! How is possible I didn't know about that piece. Thanks for creating those videos and for sharing them with us!
very nice set of variations! the fugue seems very much inspired by Brahm's fughe in Haendel variations
Yes, _very_ much!
Yes tha last variation 😂fantastic
What a glorious fugue !
Merveilleux merci !
3:20 that 5/4. Amazing.
suprisingly enjoyable
Somehow this reminds me of Borodin, and a description one of his friends gave of a series of variations he (Borodin) had played at the piano; Borodin indicated that these variations were to be the slow movement for his third (unfinished) symphony. Borodin's variations died with him, as he never played them in the presence of anyone who could recreate them.
Very good!
This is really good
1:56 espressivo,,,
That fugue is brilliant) massive thick sound and so contrapuntal. And so ironic in Russian-style!
You meant, ‘iconic’?
@@f1f1s nope) I'm sure I meant «ironic»
I'm not a fan of Lyapunov but this score is very very beautiful
Sheeesh!
is fugue begins on 8:36?
I guess so.
10:40
Shows a bit of the Tchaikovsky lyrical influence. Also, the 5/4 meter gives it a rhythmical kick. I feel it's like a "prelude" to prepare the pianist for his 2 Piano concertos afterward. His transcendental etudes also are nothing to sneeze at, either.
Anyone know a streaming service that is not as expensive as Naxos but has this kind of music on offer ? I would love to make a collection of my favourite music but often when I go back to my youtube playlists some videos have already been removed. And then I don't remember which video it was so I might have lost it forever.
I'm so sorry dude, I personally don't use streaming services other than Naxos. Have you tried Spotify, though?
@@thenameisgsarci thank you for your reply. I tried Spotify but there is songs I cannot find on it. Like the song of this video. Perhaps instead of streaming service is there a good website to purchase music from ? I personally don't like using apple or other big name stores. I have experience with 2 online stores of classical music but I forgot their name. Also what sets Naxos apart ? I looked at their website and what they offer but it feels expensive for what you get or am I missing something important ?
@@hansmemling7605 Ah no, sorry, I only use their 15-minute-free preview.
@@thenameisgsarci I really appreciate you took the time to reply. Thank you for your time. I am a big fan of the channel. You are doing a good thing here. I dream of one of my compositions making it on your channel someday.
Thanks for your appreciation as well. I'll announce when the next Original Compositions Event will be, so there. :)
Fugue 8:36
Indeed, fugue sounds just like Brahms' Handel variations
I was about to comment the same thing

My hands are too small 🥲

HEY, DUDES, I THINK HEXAMERON WENT BACK ALIVE! ruclips.net/channel/UCqmBWhNQYsUxE_YabpLubww
+thenameisgsarci Not him, but someone else who got some of his uploads back. They were obtained from someone else who saved the early 20th century/19th century playlist he had.
Sorry to burst your bubble. :(
*whines like a dog* Damn. But still, he's a big help in getting them back on RUclips. :)
Whoever you are... *salutes*
Fugue like a Brahms hendel variation fugue
Congrats on 4000 subscribers! I wonder if you have a special planned? :)
Is this a reupload of an old video?
1) Yes, thank you for the greeting, but with the catastrophe still going on, I don't even feel like celebrating. Fahq.
2) (Please refer to previous video)
3) Yes, this was one of Hexameron's uploads.
3:55 Liszt's trascendental etude 10, is that you?
Angelo shut up
no u
Too fast, what a pity!
This is not fugue.. Just few voices alternatively
What about 10:42? We've got a canon in augmentation in the right hand accompanied by statements of the subject in the left.
@@vaclavmiller8032 I also heard that part and it was so good, but this is still not fugue. It is call-response form.
@@herrlee6374 I'd like to know your definition of a fugue then. It fits the standard (and fuzzy) one, being a contrapuntal piece that in which a subject is introduced in one part and successively taken up by others, to be developed by various interweavings of said parts. That passage in particular seems to me like a classic piece of fugal development, and the individual lines playing the subjects are introduced one after another in the standard way. I don't really see how this isn't a fugue (regardless of its quality [which I rate quite highly incidentally]).
@@vaclavmiller8032 I think the pieces of Bach. Lyapunov's canon has no noticible few-meter subject, no answer, development(middle-section), and stretto. This might not be fit with the definition on dictionary, but I feel this is canon or two voice call-response music rather than fugue.
@@herrlee6374 I have three main responses to your points. There are 4 voices introduced in the exposition (1st entrance: 8:36; 2nd: 8:45; 3rd 8:53; 4th 9:01) [although I grant that they often move in 2 groups of parallel 6ths/3rds), which is plainly followed by the development, this is definitely not a canon in any strict sense and, finally, a fugue needn't contain a stretto, although the coda here is pretty plainly a stretto of sorts. (I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by 'few-meter')
